After an earlier career as a carpenter and builder, Jon Geller, DVM, DABVP emeritusr graduated from Colorado State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1995.. After graduating, he practiced as a house call veterinarian for several years, and then embarked on a 20 year career as an emergency clinician in Colorado. During that time, Geller and his partners started up 4 emergency clinics. He became Board Certified as Veterinary Practitioner in Canine and Feline Medicine in 2010. After seeing a homeless man and his pit bull on a bridge in Nashville in 2015, he founded The Street Dog Coalition, a non-profit charity, which provides free medical care, and other related services, to pets of owners at risk of, or experiencing homelessness in over 50 US cities. In March of 2022, shortly after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, The Street Dog Coalition went international, and Geller worked with several Romanian veterinarians to set up a vet clinic in a blue tent at the Romania-Ukraine border, where teams of veterinarians, vet students and technicians, known as the ‘Blue Vet Group', have been providing free veterinary care to pets of Ukraine refugees. Since setting up the tent clinic, over 800 pets have been cared for and provided European Union pet passports to allow their owners to continue their travels westward. Currently, The Street Dog Coalition is partnering with other non-profits to bring the first mobile veterinary clinic into Ukraine to provide care for injured pets, as well as providing preventive care and sterilization services, in a long-term project with a goal of caring for 10,000 pets and horses. Geller was named Veterinarian of the Year by the Colorado Veterinary Medical Association for 2019. In the spirit of unbridled learning, he is currently enrolled as an MPH candidate at the University of Minnesota. He received the ASPCA Henry Bergh Humane Award for 2022, and also is an Instructor in the Colorado School of Public Health teaching a class on ‘Homelessness in America.'

Highlighting equine practices that are moving away from "traditional" equine veterinary norms is a way to bridge the gap that exists between younger and older veterinarians. We cannot hope to attract new talent to our pool of equine veterinarians if recent grads and students don't know that there ARE progressive practices out there. I'm excited to highlight a few of these practice owners over the next couple of weeks. To start off, please enjoy this discussion with Dr. David Stephens of Weems & Stephens Equine Hospital in Aubrey, Texas....Dr. David Stephens, DABVP graduated from Texas A&M University in 1990, which was followed by a one-year internship at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital.  Upon completion of a surgery residency at Oklahoma State University in 1994, he became a Diplomate of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (Equine) in 1995. Since parasite research in goats is always evolving, I was excited to see that the American Consortium for Small Ruminant Parasite Control has revised their dewormer usage chart. Although most of the dosages have stayed the same from previous chart, there are a lot of new recommendations that you'll find in the footnotes. We are joined in this episode by one of the authors of the revision, Michael Pesato, DVM, DABVP, Assistant Clinical Professor of Food Animal Medicine and Surgery at Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine.Dr. Pesato talks about what off-label drug usage means — and what it does not. And he talks about why we should discontinue some of the practices that have been around "forever," such as giving an injectable orally. That means injectable dewormers have no place in a goat owner's medicine cabinet. We cover all the dewormers, including morantel tartrate — the only dewormer that's a feed additive. It's also one that I've never heard a vet recommend. Dr. Pesato even dispels the myth that combination horse dewormers are combination goat dewormers. For more information on using drugs off-label, check out the Food Animal Residue Avoidance Databank.Full show notes here -- https://thriftyhomesteader.com/goat-dewormers/To see the most recent episodes, visit  ForTheLoveOfGoats.comWant to support the content you love?Head over to -- https://thrifty-homesteader.ck.page/products/love-goats-tip-jar

When we went to Martin and Joy Dally's Shepherd's Lane Farm in Oregon last month for a Laproscopic A.I. Sheeping Bonanza last month, the one thing we didn't think we'd come home thinking about was…cheese.  Not that we're complaining, of course.  The people we met there were enough to keep us busy interviewing for days, and we're going back for the lambing part, so we obviously didn't get enough. Dr. Joe Klopfenstein, DVM, DABVP, sat down to talk with us in a bustling pasture with dogs and kids and sheep and peacocks all around, to talk about why he was there on the farm, what his students are learning, and what things other than wool and lamb chops that sheep are good at producing.  He has promised to take us on a tour when we return to this beautiful state, as he said that Oregon is not just well-known as the home of microbrews and wine, but also of sheep, in all their producing glory.  Since different varieties of sheep lead to different varieties of wool -- and now, of cheese (Pecorino, anyone?) – that works in our favor.  Once you can figure out how to milk them, that is.  Dr. Joe has promised to explain that one as well. Links:https://vetmed.oregonstate.edu/people/joe-klopfenstein https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_sheep_milk_cheeses https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pecorino_Romano https://www.cypressgrovecheese.com/cheese/soft-ripened-cheeses/humboldt-fog/ https://www.shepherdslane.com/Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/agriCulturePodcast)
