Welcome to episode 103 of the Shopping Cart Mafia. Gerald and I touched on a few subjects and a dry January challenge that ended up being "Damp January" which is less than moist or wet. In the final episode of Damp January, Luke talks to his friend Nora McInerny – author and podcast host of Thanks for Asking – about what it means to basically not drink anymore. The two old friends chat about the drunken exploits of their youth, boozing through grief (and when enough is enough), and how to replace drinking with a “dopamine menu,” while Luke accepts that his relationship to alcohol might never be effortless.
Whether it's dry or wet January, the Eagles are still all we can focus on. A full CREW of Hoagie Mouth OGs welcome you to another week in Philadephia sportsdom. The only thing we can really focus on is the Eagles. Who was your favorite player last week? What was the ONE REASON they won? Is it Jayden Daniel or Daniels? These and other pressing questions are answered by Ned, Bob, Mike L and your host Jeff as we traverse through our feelings and thoughts around the 24/25 Eagles. One more win, and we are BACK in the big game. We spent like 3 minutes on the Sixers, and it speaks for itself. Jeff again valiantly explains hockey and the latest for the Flyers (it could be good? we are close the wild card??!?!). Want to hear a topic that we didn't cover? EMAIL US. Also, pray for LA folks. Was it sheer alcoholism or just adolescent rage? Comedian, podcaster, and memoirist Moshe Kasher (Subculture Vulture) poses this question to himself in a conversation with Luke about his own journey through the 12-steps, which began as a teenager during the Nancy Regan-fueled era of “Just Say No.” Now sober for basically three decades, Moshe reflects on the mantra “one day at a time,” his curiosity around psychedelics, and how addiction (not the substance) is the real enemy.

What's really the harm in “moderate” (whatever that means) drinking? According to New York Times bestselling author Gary Shteyngart, absolutely nothing. Luke weighs the balance between sobriety and binging in a conversation about the joys of drinking with a man who loves his martinis… and has no dreams of living into his mid-80s. While recent research suggests alcohol may be more harmful than once thought, Shteyngart questions whether forsaking life's small pleasures is worth it, given life's inevitable end.

Has Luke just met his match? In a conversation with journalist Shaughnessy Bishop-Stall, author of Hungover: The Morning After and One Man's Quest for a Cure, Luke discovers that Shaughnessy's love of the drink – and his knack for getting shaken up and stirred in – mirrors his very own. The two discuss tragically drunk writers of notoriety, the tendency to lie to their doctors, and the worst hangovers they've ever had.
Welcome to a new year of Menu Talk. On this week's podcast, Bret Thorn, senior food & beverage editor of Nation's Restaurant News and Restaurant Hospitality, and Pat Cobe, senior menu editor at Restaurant Business, talk trends. New Year's Day marks the start of Dry January, which seems to be motivation for people to moderate alcohol consumption for a while, even if they fall off the wagon before the month is out. Pat has tried it and stuck with it twice, but this year, she's going with “Damp” January instead, cutting back without completely abstaining. However Dry January shakes out, the hosts are in agreement that the quantity and quality of mocktails at restaurants and bars is much improved. Bret recently wrote about how the complexity and craftsmanship of spirit-free options offers non-drinking guests an experience that's not at all diminished. In fact, spirit-free pairings or smaller pours with a tasting menu can actually enhance rather than dull the experience. Aside from the spirit-free trend, which Pat and Bret see continuing, we chatted about the abundance of food and drink predictions that have landed in our inboxes. Will the sweet-heat or “swicy” flavor trend move into 2025, and what will be the “it” cuisine this year? And what's with all the brown sugar and espresso on the beverage side? Plus, what happened to all the healthy menu items that usually launch in January? Tune in to find out the latest, plus Pat shares an interview with Nathan Louer, chief brand officer at Jamba. He discusses how Jamba has evolved from a juice and smoothie concept to a destination for meal replacements and snacks that balance health and indulgence. Louer and his team are focusing innovation on the core menu, introducing new categories including bowls, blended coffees and bites. Give a listen.

In a special episode of Live Wire, host Luke Burbank introduces our new limited series podcast Damp January. Over five episodes in January, Burbank explores his sometimes complicated relationship with alcohol through conversations with writers, podcasters, and others. In this selection from Episode 1, he chats with his mother, Susie, about her journey to sobriety. Then, The New Yorker's Adam Gopnik discusses his book The Real Work: On the Mystery of Mastery, in which he learns how to drive a car at age 55 and pee in public, before poet and singer Dessa performs her track "Crash."
New Year's Diet Survey...Damp January...Preferred Celebrity Roommate -- PLUS -- tragedy on Bourbon Street, allergic to Christmas?, don't eat these, and much more
Why not start at the beginning? Luke contemplates his complicated history of drinking, from balancing days as a public radio reporter with wild nights at Culver City's iconic dive Tattle Tale Room, to making a public statement about quitting the drink… only to get back on the sauce. Then Luke sits down with his mom, Susie Burbank, to chat about her own road to recovery.
Here's a little friendship drama to start the New Year: A woman and her pal "Jill" are going on a skiing trip in Japan with a group of people. Two of the men approached Jill to tell her they each had crushes on the caller, and asked her to broker a connection. Jill wants nothing to do with this, and the caller is bewildered. Why is Jill so angry? And how should she proceed? A man has a 22 year-old nephew who he suspects is gay. The lad is immersed in conservative Christian culture, and if he is gay, has let no one know. Should the caller broach the subject and try to inspire him to find a version of Christianity that will accept him? Or keep his avuncular mouth shut? On the Magnum, Dan welcomes back Tawny Lara, aka The Sober Sexpert, and the author of Dry Humping: A Guide to Dating, Relating, and Hooking Up Without the Booze. She is on to talk about partying like a sorority sister without all the champagne or cocaine. And she encourages an embrace of Damp January- you know, drink a little less maybe? And, woman has been hooking up with a man for a few months, having great sex. But he never lets her sleep over at his place, and she's never met his friends. Then he dropped the bomb that he is about to become a baby daddy. Their relationship will surely change. But should she disregard the red flags here? Happy New Year one and all! Luke Burbank, host of the public radio variety show Live Wire, knows his way around a drink. At times, he's gotten too familiar with the stuff, which is why he's now trying to fix his relationship with alcohol. In this new limited series, Luke talks to friends, family, and cultural luminaries living at various points on the booze spectrum — from enthusiastic imbibers to teetotalers and everyone in-between. After a booze-heavy pandemic and increased attention to alcohol's health risks, many have reconsidered their habits. But is mindful consumption actually achievable? Even for people named Luke? Damp January explores these questions with humor, honesty, and (occasionally) a little liquid courage. It's every Wednesday in… you guessed it, January.
Bill and I are back. Pardon our absence as family needs took a higher priority for both of us lately. On this podcast we offer up a quick summary of what we have been doing during our hiatus. While we may have been busy handling family affairs we still found time to have an adult beverage every now and then. We'll share some of those discoveries on this show. Also I continue to post regularly on Twitter eerr X.Having never participated in a “Dry January” I have found myself consuming less alcohol; more like a “Damp January and February'. I certainly sleep better on nights minus alcohol. Bill postulates that spirits especially vodka are easier for the body to digest. As with so many other things in our lives the key to a successful lifestyle is moderation. We are having a wonderfully wet winter in Sonoma. The rainfall total are up to 123% of normal as of March 2nd and the consistent soakings show no signs of subsiding. If one could draw it up this winter cycle has been picture perfect. We're getting all the precipitation we need without the drama of bomb cyclones or floods. Our fingers are crossed that this trend continues. If you've ever considered visiting Sonoma County, the springtime in my opinion is probably the best time to come and explore what wine country has to offer. Less crowds, moderate prices on lodging and a slower pace present an excellent opportunity to make some new discoveries. Thanks to everyone for listening. Cheers!
This Is Our Time...to tell you about Harmony, and while the show has already closed on Broadway, you can listen to us tell you all about it if you take this podcast with you Where You Go! -- Have you heard of Damp January? The New York Times seems to think it's a worthy trend. Take a look at some of the history behind the real Comedian Harmonists, and there's now a podcast that goes through their history as well! Check out some clips from the earlier production of Harmony in LA that Christine got to see, featuring a very different direction than the version that made it to Broadway. It's interesting to see how New York Times gave Harmony a critic's pick in the off-Broadway iteration, while the Broadway production received a generally negative review from the same publication (though a different critic). -- Music featured in this episode: Harmony (The Cast Recording) Apple Music / Spotify / Amazon Music Marie - The Comedian Harmonists YouTube -- Follow us on Twitter and Instagram @BottomlessBway, our blog at https://bottomlessbway.home.blog, or email us at bottomlessbway@gmail.com! Guest: Dr. Jody Ryan Chief Medical Officer for WellPower, formerly Mental Health Center of Denver Dry January started as a public health challenge in the UK in 2013. It gained popularity and 35% of Americans participated last year. People double the amount they drink in a year between Thanksgiving and New Year’s. People will use January as a reset to get their health back on track. A fifth of millennials and a quarter of gen z were unable to stay dry so they did damp January. Damp January might be being more mindful so maybe cutting back one day a week or even one drink when you go out. The truth is no amount of alcohol is health. Alcohol is a toxin that helps people feel more relaxed but it can cause inflammation and can cause liver cancer and heart disease.

Guest: Dr. Jody Ryan Chief Medical Officer for WellPower, formerly Mental Health Center of Denver Dry January started as a public health challenge in the UK in 2013. It gained popularity and 35% of Americans participated last year. People double the amount they drink in a year between Thanksgiving and New Year's. People will use January as a reset to get their health back on track. A fifth of millennials and a quarter of gen z were unable to stay dry so they did damp January. Damp January might be being more mindful so maybe cutting back one day a week or even one drink when you go out. The truth is no amount of alcohol is health. Alcohol is a toxin that helps people feel more relaxed but it can cause inflammation and can cause liver cancer and heart disease. www.wellpower.org See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Go Lightly, with some alternatives for January (or any time of year) - beverages that don't hit as hard, but don't sacrifice flavor. From lighter ABV Light wines, Carb free beers that also hit around 4%, Baileys Light (at about 16%), lighter vodkas, and even martinis that don't have quite the kick. The availability and the growth in Dry January, and now a Wet or Damp January, means you have options if you want them. Did you know about sotol in tequila and mezcal? Unlike Agave, which is killed when it's harvested, the sotol base and root are left behind to regrow. That means more mezcal and tequila, which gets more popular each year. So what do we all want from wine in the year ahead? What's top of our wish list for wine in 2023?For some it's drinking better (or simply more) wine. If possible, for less money. Others are hoping Pinot Noir proves to be a miracle cure and will be prescribed by doctors...More realistically, combating climate change, responsible political engagement with wine and an end to the war in Ukraine inevitably feature. And what of no-alcohol wine? The rise of organic and biodynamic viticulture? The quest for fresher wines, with moderate alcohol? Greater diversity and inclusivity in wine? Wine in cans? The growth of English wine? A return to travel? Wines with 'added value' (and less marketing nonsense)? And supporting independent wine merchants? In this frank, opinionated episode, we take in a whole host of views from around the world and also hear from Master Sommelier Gearoid Devaney, wine writer Libby Brodie and Master of Wine Peter McCombie, among others.Somehow, we also touch on poor taste in jumpers, serendipity, Damp January, the wine fountain of Irache, undies and their openings - and algorithms. This episode paves the way for the subsequent programme entitled: How to Be a Better Wine Lover. All details from this episode (including links we mentioned) are on our website: Show notes for Wine Blast S4 E9 - The Year Ahead: A Wine Lover's Wish ListWe'd love to hear what you want from the year ahead, or how to be a better wine lover (or indeed to receive any pics of 'cool' wine jumpers) - do get in touch via Instagram or Twitter. We're here to help you make it through Dry January We've made it through another year and here we are with our livers beaten senseless through the holiday celebrations. If you're giving the body a break and trying to go dry we have some good news. There are some pretty decent options available now to allow you to still have drink with your friends. People always have questions about the Beer Guys drinking NA beers. Hey, we like beer, but we know that too much of it is not a good thing. We also like the taste of beer so having an occasional day, week, month where we ease up on the alcohol can be a good thing. Speaking of just doing a day or so... we heard of Damp January this year. That's kind of the principle we've been going by. It can still be beneficial to take a break even if you don't go totally dry. With that in mind... here are a few of our favs. NA Beers Athletic Brewing - Most of what we've tried from Athletic is solid. They are our favorite all around NA brewer Partake - Another one that is mostly solid. Bravus - Their Peanut Butter Dark is our single fav NA beer, and the one that would be most difficult for us to tell from an alcoholic version of the same style Ceria - Only a couple offerings right now but they are tasty. If you're in CA or CO, they offer NA brews infused with THC and CBD. (Ceria was founded by Dr. Keith Villa, the creator of Blue Moon.) One to pass on.... Hairless Dog. We tried several of their offerings and did not find any we thought were palatable. NA Spirits NA spirits have some catching up to do with NA beer. The quality is just not there and they are VERY far off from tasting anything like what they are trying to replace. Most brands do say they are meant to be mixers rather than drinking them straight. We highly suggest you follow this guideline. The "bite" and mouthfeel is the hard part here. Some brands add pepper and capsaicin to try and mimic the heat, but it's still a long shot We recently tried Drink Monday gin and whiskey. They are some of the better ones we've tried, but still not sippers. Nate made an NA Old Fashioned with them and it was a decent cocktail, but not really passable as an Old Fashioned. BIG WINNER - Lyre's Italian Spritz is pretty tasty. Even on it's on. A cocktail of 1 part Lyre's, 1 part Drink Monday gin, over ice and topped with Fever Tree tonic made a very enjoyable cocktail that would pass for a gin and tonic. If you're shooting for Dry January we're rooting for you. We know you can do it.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Low risk drinking guidelines from the NIAAA: Healthy men under 65: No more than 4 drinks in one day and no more than 14 drinks per week. Healthy women (all ages) and healthy men 65 and older: No more than 3 drinks in one day and no more than 7 drinks per week. In the aftermath of NFL player Damar Hamlin's collapse and cardiac arrest during gameplay this week, a wave of anti-vaxxers took to social media to spread conspiracy theories that the COVID-19 vaccine was to blame for his health condition. Our guests weigh in on this concerning development and its implications and Dr. Labos explains what may have actually happened to the player whose sudden collapse during the game sent a shockwave across the sports world and wider public. ----- THE STATE OF CUSTOMER SERVICE AND RETURNS Libby Znaimer is joined by Lisa Hutcheson, a retail expert and consultant with JC Williams. Today: we have to discuss the state of customer service, which Libby and many others would argue, from first-hand experience, remains fraught with problems and often leaves the customer getting the bad end of the stick. When it comes to requesting exchanges and refunds, it is hardly ever so easy to win. How did we get to this point and what can we as customers do to navigate the world of bad customer care? Lisa explains. ---- DRY (AND DAMP) JANUARY Libby Znaimer is joined by Dr. Kevin Shield, scientist with CAMH's Institute for Mental Health Policy Research and Dr. Sara Dimerman, a psychologist based in Toronto. It's the month of "Dry January" where many opt to take a break from drinking alcoholic beverages for a variety of reasons. But, there are other terms floating around as well like Damp January which promotes the idea of moderation when consuming such drinks. Whether you decide to quit altogether for a while or reduce the amount you drink, our guests weigh in on the benefits you might find from such decisions.
