Deep dive: 2024 has become the deadliest year for aid workers with harrowing risks of humanitarian work laid bare over the weekend. In this episode, Apolonia is joined by Andrew Boyd, a former cybersecurity consultant who ditched his desk job, strapped on a helmet and a harness, and found a more fulfilling career in the trees. What can safety professionals learn from a man who prunes trees, chops down trees, removes deadwood and trees, and grinds tree stumps? A lot, apparently! Listen to this episode to find out! Today's topics include: * Andrew started in software engineering but found the desk job isolating, leading him to explore tree climbing as a way to combine problem-solving and physical activity. *Andrew's transition from a desk job to tree work, and how his analytical mindset has helped him in this new field. * How many tree workers lack proper training and safety practices, leading to injuries and bad habits. How Andrew started his own business to prioritize safety and best practices, despite potential slower work rates. * Stories of unethical company cultures and near-incidents, highlighting the importance of setting one's own rules and regulations. * Andrew recounts a dangerous tree climbing experience with a colleague who made multiple mistakes, including not tying the rope properly and not paying attention. * The importance of building confidence and comfort level in a safe manner, while also respecting individual boundaries and not pushing people to do something they're uncomfortable with, even if it's not a safety issue. * Safety protocols and leadership in a tree service industry, including how layered safety measures, such as wearing chaps, are important for preventing accidents. * How leaders set the tone for their organization's culture by their actions and behaviors. * If leadership doesn't prioritize safety standards, it may be a sign that the company doesn't truly care about its workers. * The importance of standing up for safety and leading by example, even if it means pausing a project or speaking up when someone is not following safety protocols. #204: You've probably seen jornaleros – or day laborers – as you drive to work. They might be looking for gigs outside of home improvement stores or moving services, or even a random donut shop. There are estimates of 35,000 day laborers working in Los Angeles. The work they get hired to do often includes things like moving furniture, cleaning debris or helping with small construction projects. But sometimes the work can be dangerous and even illegal. Most have no idea what the work really is until they get the to the job site. Today, How To LA host Brian De Los Santos speaks to LA Times reporter Brittny Mejia about the sometimes precarious tasks jornaleros do — and how going through a job center may protect them. Brittany recently published this story. Guest: Brittny Mejia, Metro reporter at the Los Angeles Times
Jason mentioned that when checking out a story on the world's most dangerous jobs he discovered that topping the list - human cannonball. Peter then informed Jason that one of his very good friends just happened to be Ringling Brothers human cannonball…Really, no really! Why put your life and limb on the line 12 times a week for your profession? What drives a Ringling clown to defy the clearly defined circus caste system and attempt to join the prestigious, aristocracy acts by being shot out of a cannon, traveling high above an audience and landing hundreds of feet away? For 25 years Jon Weiss worked with Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus as a Ringmaster, Clown and "Human Cannonball" – with over 5,000 notches in his cannonball belt. You also might know him as a contestant along with a fellow clown, on CBS' The Amazing Race 4. BONUS: Peter surprised Jason with an in-studio appearance of a potentially even more dangerous job – The Human Torch! Ray Wold has been performing in Cirque du Soleil's “O” show in Las Vegas for more than 24 years, completely engulfing himself in flames as he casually sits on a chair reading a newspaper. Really, no Really! In this episode: The things that motivate people to take dangerous jobs. What it takes to become the human cannonball. The secret circus caste system, clown college & circus sabotage! What it feels like to experience 12G's and deadly mistakes. Jason's failed attempt at fire eating. How the human torch learned to fully engulf himself in fire. How the King on Monaco made Ray's career. Dangerous jobs Jason and Peter contemplate taking. Paul opens the show sharing a misleading article about how great I Bond returns are. Paul and Ira segway to discuss older workers who get stuck in dangerous jobs because of a lack of planning. Today, Paul and Ira try to paint a picture about how many workers age in jobs with modest wages and with working conditions that are tough for older employees because they don't have any other options. One of the biggest barriers to saving is not believing that you have enough income. Paul encourages everyone that when you start saving a little, you understand how to put yourself in better situations around money. Later in the show, Paul shares about billionaires selling their shares of stock and that it's not all what it seems. D Working as a crew person on a fishing boat on the high seas or as part of a Coast Guard search and rescue helicopter crew rank as two of the most challenging and dangerous jobs in the world. When the fishing vessel La Conte began to sink in eighty-mile-per-hour (128.7 km/h) winds, the terrified crew had to jump into sixty-foot (18.3 m) seas in the middle of the night. Meanwhile, a Coast Guard chopper crew in Sitka was deployed to search for the source of a distress call from a satellite beacon. The driving hail and fierce winds battered and bounced the helicopter around the sky while its occupants searched the dark ocean for the source of the EPIRB signal. The pilot dropped down as close to the sea as he dared, and he knew that a rogue wave could bury the chopper at any moment. What the crew of the helicopter saw stunned them. Four men fought to stay afloat in massive seas. Rescuing them seemed like an impossible task. Sources: Lewan, Todd. “Helicopter crew braves vicious storm.” “Storm Gods and Heroes.” 12-28-1998. When is accepting potentially deadly work a choice and when is it coercive? Are there realistic alternatives for people living in communities whose major industries bring with them the chance of death?
