Jason mentioned that when checking out a story on the world's most dangerous jobs he discovered that topping the list - human cannonball. Peter then informed Jason that one of his very good friends just happened to be Ringling Brothers human cannonball…Really, no really! Why put your life and limb on the line 12 times a week for your profession? What drives a Ringling clown to defy the clearly defined circus caste system and attempt to join the prestigious, aristocracy acts by being shot out of a cannon, traveling high above an audience and landing hundreds of feet away? For 25 years Jon Weiss worked with Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus as a Ringmaster, Clown and "Human Cannonball" – with over 5,000 notches in his cannonball belt. On this episode of Between Two Beers, we talk to Marc Ellis. Marc has done enough in his life to have an episode dedicated to each chapter. He played rugby for Otago, North Harbour, Blues, Highlanders and All Blacks and League for the Warriors and Kiwis, founded Charlie's juice company – which after 10 years he sold to Asahi for $129 million, and was one of New Zealand's top television stars for over a decade. In this episode we talk about what it was like to walk away with $18 million after selling Charlie's - and why he decided to keep working, the best stories from university in Dunedin and touring with the All Blacks, why he thinks he was poisoned before the 1995 Rugby World Cup final, the time he was nearly killed by a bowling machine, the glory days with Ridgey, his favourite moments from Sports Café, what he's doing now and much much more. Marc was our dream guest – and he delivered. Seamus and I grew up watching his unpredictable brand of hijinx and gags on TV, and his infectiously positive and fun personality rubbed off on us both. But behind the laughs and wild stories is an incredibly driven, successful, thoughtful guy and we had so much fun working through his full story. You'll love this one. Though Chad Fischer's musical resume begins with School of Fish, the drummer didn't play on either of the band's two full-length albums. Just before the recording of 1993's Human Cannonball, Fischer was fired by producer Matt Wallace who brought in session drummer Josh Freese to play on the album. When Freese was unable to tour with School of Fish due to other commitments, Fischer rejoined as the live drummer until the band broke up shortly thereafter. Knowing that he wanted to make a living in music, Fischer acquired gear and built a recording studio where he recorded not only his post-School of Fish band, Lazlo Bane, where he sang and played guitars, but worked on a number of releases by artists like Star 69 and Jeremy Toback. A chance meeting with Colin Hay (Men at Work) resulted in a personal - and working - relationship that continues to this day. Perhaps Fischer's biggest musical accomplishment, however, was writing the song “Superman” which became the theme song for the long-running NBC comedy, Scrubs. These days, Fischer is writing, recording and producing for TV and movies, staying busy by releasing cover songs (and videos) and starting to work on new Lazlo Bane material. Songs In This Episode: Intro - Superman by Lazlo Bane (from All The Time In The World) 7:47 - Alone Again by Chad Fischer (from Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs soundtrack) Outro - 3 Strange Days by Lazlo Bane and School of Fish (from Someday We'll Be Together) Support the podcast, join the DMO UNION at Patreon. Rossa Richter was born in 1863 in London, England, and rose to fame after meeting William Leonard Hunt, also known as The Great Farini, and becoming “Zazel the Human Cannonball”. She was successfully fired out of the cannon hundreds of times until 1881 while performing her signature 'leap for life' trapeze stunt in Las Vegas, the bracing poles of her apparatus were accidentally left unsecured causing her to fall 50ft to the ground below - she survived, but broke her back in several places, an injury that effectively ended her circus career. Rossa Richter died of natural causes on the 8th December 1937, aged 74, at Camberwell House hospital in Peckham, London. ✅ Let's connect: Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/unusualweekly Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/unusualweekly Twitter - https://www.twitter.com/unusualweekly YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/unusualasusual Fact Analysis: Although careful research is implemented to assure accurate and correct information, sometimes it can be difficult to separate fact from fiction (or ‘humbug', as P.T. Elliana Grace grew up in a circus family and in the circus life. From infancy. Like, from being a baby being breastfed while sitting atop an elephant kind of infancy. She and her two younger brothers, who also are globe-traveling professional circus performers, spent more time at their fantastically strange and sometimes dangerous home-away-from-home in St. Louis, the City Museum, than they did their home-home. Elliana shares some laugh-out-loud stories of mischief and sibling rivalry. And by the way, Elliana spent a year riding the rails with the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus as, hands down, the most singularly explosive performer (wink, wink) in the circus, let’s say. And a lot more, including memories of her grandfather, the renowned columnist and jazz critic, Nat Hentoff. Welcome back and hello to the new listeners, we hope everyone is having fun and taking care of themselves. So, this week we find out that there is a new electronic skin developed from the National University of Singapore. We discussed how it can be applied in the real world, trust me this will make you laugh, the possibilities are endless. Although we really like the idea of a window for submarines with a heads up display, that would be cool. Next up we look at an indie game called Dwarf Fortress from two brothers and how their model might rival the triple A game studios. This is a game that embraces the gaming community and encourages players to develop extra content and share it online. Lastly, we look at the transition of a video game character now appearing in DC Comics known as the Arkham Knight. This not the first time that has happened as Marvel has done it before but obviously DC will do it better. As usual we have the regular list of shout outs, remembrances, birthdays, and events of interest. As usual we have a lot of fun bringing you this latest episode of mayhem, so settle in with a cup of earl grey hot and a biscuit while we bring you some of the news this week in Nerd pop culture. Remember, take care of each other and stay hydrated.EPISODE NOTES:Electronic Skin - https://www.futurity.org/electronic-skin-self-healing-jellyfish-2023282/Dwarf Fortress - https://www.patreon.com/posts/25343688Arkham Knight is officially canon - https://comicbook.com/dc/2019/04/02/arkham-knight-is-now-officially-batman-canon/Games currently playingDJ – Apex legends - https://www.ea.com/games/apex-legendsBuck – Deceit - https://store.steampowered.com/app/466240/Deceit/Professor - https://store.steampowered.com/app/611500/Quake_Champions/Other topics discussedTilapia Fish - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TilapiaSmart spray- https://www.express.co.uk/life-style/health/570603/Revolutionary-spray-oxygen-heals-serious-woundsWhat to do when you have a wet iPhone- https://drfone.wondershare.com/iphone-problems/how-to-fix-a-wet-iphone-that-fell-in-water.htmlWaterproof iPhone prank- https://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/apple/10330414/iOS-7-users-destroy-iPhones-after-fake-waterproof-advert.htmliPhone microwave prank- https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2768976/Emergency-services-forced-step-iPhone-users-fall-internet-prank-explains-use-microwave-charge-phone.htmlWoman microwaves cat- https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-devon-15856146Borderlands 3 is an Epic Games Store exclusive- https://www.forbes.com/sites/erikkain/2019/04/03/borderlands-3-is-an-epic-games-store-exclusive-and-there-is-no-god/#b866c396f216More info on Dwarf Fortress- Bay12games patreon page - https://www.patreon.com/bay12games- Dwarf Fortress official website - http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/Linux turns 25- https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2016/08/on-linuxs-25th-anniversary-development-has-gone-corporate/Warhorse Studios being bought by THQ Nordic- https://www.oneangrygamer.net/2019/02/kingdom-come-deliverance-developer-warhorse-studios-acquired-by-thq-nordic/76857/‘Marvel’s Spiderman’ now a comic book series- https://www.marvel.com/articles/comics/marvel-s-spider-man-swings-into-the-pages-of-marvel-comics New Apex legends patch- https://www.express.co.uk/entertainment/gaming/1109391/Apex-Legends-update-Xbox-One-PS4-patch-notes-level-resetStarter Packs - CS: GO Russian- https://knowyourmeme.com/photos/1094440-starter-packsCS: GO Danger Zone Blacksite- https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2019/01/11/csgo-danger-zone-blacksite-map-best-locations-where-to-land-best-loot-2/Woman arrested in Mar-a-Lago- https://www.nytimes.com/2019/04/02/us/mar-a-lago-zhang-chinese-secret-service.htmlCannonball (Marvel Comics)- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cannonball_(comics)Rudy Giuliani (New York Mayor)- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rudy_GiulianiCharlemagne (death metal band) - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charlemagne:_By_the_Sword_and_the_Cross- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charlemagne:_The_Omens_of_DeathCold Mountain (film)- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cold_Mountain_(film)Facebook plaintext passwords- https://techcrunch.com/2019/03/21/facebook-plaintext-passwords/Shoutouts1 Apr 1918 - Founding of the Royal Air Force - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_the_Royal_Air_Force2 Apr 1877 – Flash! Episode 154 fires at you like a cannonball, screaming profanity and peeing itself with fear like a human. That's right, we're playing from Atari's early days the "what the hell, let's try this" title, the 1978 classic HUMAN CANNONBALL. Those of you who didn't get enough of your aggressions out by splatting flailing stick figures into the ground in "Circus Atari", this game is for you. But does this week's short story land dead center in the water tank or smack the dirt? Thanks to Kevin McLeod at Incompetech.com for creative commons use of his songs "Reformat", "Pinball Spring" and "Take a Chance". If you're still interested in a review of 2018 written in the style of classic children's book "Goodnight Moon", well I wrote one! Go read it here. Thanks to Mike Mann for his "Mad Mike Hughes" update theme. Atari Bytes show notes, episodes and what not. It's a Podcast, Charlie Brown - Hey! That's my other show!

It’s our first Ben-less week. Aadil is joined by Ms. Beeresistable herself, Lucy Yearwood. Without Ben to reign us in, we talk about quite a bit starting with the newly launched XBox Game Pass, compare it to EA Access, and rant about the weird business models that exist around older games. Aadil waxes poetic about “European Truck Simulator 2” in VR and “Superhot VR”. We touch a little on Hitman and the shutting down of I/O Interactive, and the “Link to the Past: Randomizer”, as well as “Breath of the Wild”, “Thumper” and so much more. Oh yeah, the topic is nostalgia gaming, (S)NES classic, and backwards compatibility. We both take on the 500mL 9.2% ‘Human Cannonball’ from “Magic Rock […]

We’re back with our latest requested review, this week we’re checking out the second and final album by School of Fish, 1993′s Human Cannonball. The band scored a minor hit on their first album, but none of the singles reached the same level of success from this release, and we try to figure out why. While the main songwriting tandem of Josh Clayton-Felt and Micheal Ward stayed in tact, the rhythm section changed, and that might have had some impact, while other parts that should have made an impact didn’t. We struggled with this record, are we justified in our criticisms? Tune in hear what we’ve got to say, and let us know if you agree or disagree. In this week's episode I profile the first two Sega games for the Atari 2600, Tac-Scan and Sub Scan. This is just as confusing as Data Age's Airlock and Warplock, but those weren't in the same show. In this episode is a new Strudder's Score and an audio submission from Mr. Guy Hutchinson, podcaster extraordinaire. Here's a protip: if you run out of time to write a script for your show, don't think you can just use your notes and improvise, it ain't gonna happen. Next week I'll be looking at Football and Basketball by Atari. Hopefully I'm just going to look at them not actually play them, but I may be expected to do that. Upcoming episodes will include Gangster Alley and Planet Patrol by Spectravision, Miniature Golf and Human Cannonball by Atari, Coconuts and Cosmic Creeps by Telesys, Star Wars Death Star Battle and Ewok Adventure by Parker Brothers, and Bowling and Sky Diver by Atari. You can send emails or mp3s containing your wonderful stories for any or all (recommended) of these games to 2600gamebygame@comcast.net. Thank you all for listening! This week's extremely late episode deals with the early Data Age games Encounter At L-5 and Warplock. I'm sorry you had to wait so long for this lackluster episode. But there is an audio submission from Kevin, so it's not all bad. Next week's also delayed episode will be about Tac-Scan and Sub Scan, by Sega. Yes, it's the same Sega. Upcoming games include Basketball and Football by Atari, Gangster Alley and Planet Patrol by Spectravision, Miniature Golf and Human Cannonball by Atari, Coconuts and Cosmic Creeps by Telesys, and Star Wars Death Star Battle and Ewok Adventure by Parker Brothers. If you have stories for any of these games, please send them to me in text or mp3 form, 2600gamebygame@comcast.net. I read every submission on the show and I really love hearing from you! This week's episode is about the early Atari games Breakout and Home Run. I received another audio submission this week, I love getting those so please keep sending them in! Next week I'll be discussing Warp Lock and Encounter At L-5 by Data Age. It may be a short show, there's not much info out there about Data Age. Upcoming games include Tac-Scan and Sub Scan by Sega, Basketball and Football by Atari, Gangster Alley and Planet Patrol by Spectravision, Miniature Golf and Human Cannonball by Atari, and Coconuts and Cosmic Creeps by Telesys. You can send your stories and memories of these games in text or audio form to 2600gamebygame@comcast.net. Thank you for listening! This week's episode deals with Activision's Skiing and Bridge. Please note that I screwed up the production number of Bridge in the show, it should be AX 006. I totally missed that in the list and just noticed it now when I checked what the numbers were for the blog title. In this episode I got two great audio submissions from Shinto and Rob O'Hara, and I got some constructive criticism from James. Instead of recording at night this time, I recorded after I woke up, so if you're reading this James, please let me know if this made any difference! I think I sound a lot more awake, I'm sure that my wife will let me know too. Next week's episode will be about Breakout and Home Run by Atari. If you have any stories or memories of these games, please send them along to 2600gamebygame@comcast.net. You can send text or audio, and all of them get on the show. Upcoming games include Encounter at L5 and Warplock by Data Age, Tac-Scan and Sub Scan by Sega, Basketball and Football by Atari, Gangster Alley and Planet Patrol by Spectravision, and Miniature Golf and Human Cannonball by Atari. The Johnson Wax Company presents Jim and Marion Jordan, as Fibber McGee and Molly. Today Fibber has somehow been put in charge of the circus, and won the job as human cannonball. Meanwhile, he and Molly tour the midway to see the attractions. One character they encounter is a fast paced talking woman who chats it up with Fibber. The lady is voiced by Molly. The orchestra plays, Hallelujah. As Fibber and Molly continue to take in the sights, Harlow Wilcox sneaks in the commercial. Mayor Appleton has a few words, and as Fibber takes off to handle circus business Molly tries to talk to the Mayor to get Fibber out of his cannonball job. Just before Tommy Harris sings, My Last Love Affair, there's a voice actress who does a monotone character. Similar to Wallace Wimple, who doesn't appear on the show for a few more years to come. The character is voiced by Molly. Fibber has his fortune told. Molly does another voice of a gruff sounding woman. That sneaky old Harlow gets in another commercial. Mort Tooks, actually the voice of Fibber, talks to our stars. The band plays, but the number skips and is slightly snipped. Fibber and Molly talk to a balloon salesman. Of course, Teeny makes an appearance at the circus. Fibber finally has his big moment. Worry sets in as he talks to the Old Timer. Will he go through with it? Will he be let off the hook? I'm not telling, so listen in to find out. Bonus Tracks: Tune Wranglers. 1930's. They Go Wild Over Me. Graham MacNamee. 1940. Letters from Listeners concerning soap operas, and word definitions.
