This week's guest is David Franco, Director of Exceptional Academy, a post-secondary program that provides IT certification training with a focus in cybersecurity for Detroit-area adults with disabilities. David spoke with us first on episode 337 where he introduced the program. Now, he's giving us an update on how the program is going, what the future plans are, and what their program needs from the community. Exceptional Academy is a program of the Living and Learning Enrichment Center (a suburban Detroit nonprofit which helps teens and adults with autism and/or related challenges. They offer IT training to local adults with disabilities that will result in globally recognized technology certifications up to and including CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate) with a focus in Cybersecurity. This program was the first of its kind to be offered in Michigan and only the 2nd in the entire country. David Franco was born on December 19, 1966, with congenitally corrected transposition of the great arteries (or cc-TGA). David was actually a pioneer as an early cc-TGA Survivor. He was an avid athlete, an advocate for the congenital heart defect (CHD) community, and a devout Catholic. David passed away after over 5 decades of living with his funky heart. He passed due to complications from his CHD on March 12, 2020 - during a coronavirus-complicated world so some family members weren't even able to attend the funeral.This episode is an opportunity for David's mother, sister, and two of his brothers to share memories with Anna of David. David Franco was born with congenitally-corrected transposition of the great arteries and a ventricular septal defect (or VSD). David is 49 years old and has had several cardiac and several other, non-cardiac surgeries. In this episode of "Heart to Heart with Anna" David will share with us what he has learned from having non-cardiac surgeries. He will inform us what he knows adults with congenital heart defects (CHDs) need to be aware of and what kinds of questions to ask. He will also share with us what some of his concerns have been in the past and what complications he's experienced. The most common cyanotic congenital heart defect that presents in the first month after birth is transposition of the great arteries (TGA) -- dextro-TGA (d-TGA) and levo-TGA (l-TGA) or congenitally corrected TGA (also known as cc-TGA). Because cc-TGA is rarer than d-TGA, it's not often spoken about. In this episode, we'll have two adult survivors with cc-TGA talk about what it's like living with cc-TGA, how it's affected their lives and what advice they have for parents of babies with cc-TGA.The episode opens with Carol Raimondi. Carol Raimondi was born in 1975 with levo-transposition of the great arteries, pulmonary stenosis, atrial septal defect, ventricular septal defect (or VSD) and dextrocardia. Her first surgery at age 5, repaired her VSD and widened her pulmonary artery. Soon after that, she required a pacemaker. She has had 3 more open-heart surgeries – at ages 12, 21 and 31, and numerous pacemaker surgeries.David Franco was born on December 19, 1966. His heart defect was not detected until 6 weeks after birth. David’s parents were given very few options and David was sent to the University of Alabama, Birmingham to have his VSD closed by Dr. John Kirklin. He received a pacemaker during the operation.David had a second OHS at 27 to replace his pulmonary valve and add a pulmonary conduit allowing more oxygenated blood to go through his body. The surgery was successful but David suffered a stroke during the procedure.
