This week, host Gray Jones interviews writer/producer team Benjamin Raab and Deric A. Hughes, currently co-executive producing Legacies on the CW, who have written and produced on Arrow, Scream: the Series, The Flash, Beauty and the Beast and Warehouse 13. This episode is sponsored by Pilar Alessandra of onthepage.tv. Pilar is offering a 10% discount on her interactive-online class “Rewrite Techniques,” running Four Saturdays, May 23 – June 13. To get your 10% off, use the code onthepage10 at checkout. Benjamin Raab and Deric A. Hughes have written together for almost 20 years. Ben got his start in comic books, which led to their “geek cute” in a comic book shop. They describe how it took many years of writing and applying, including for for a comic book series and web series, and multiple years applying for fellowships, before they finally landed a spot in NBC Writers on the Verge. While still in that fellowship, they were staffed on Warehouse 13, and have high praise for the positive creative environment fostered by showrunner Jack Kenny (interviewed in episode 2). From there, they wrote on Beauty and the Beast, The Flash, Scream: The Series, and Arrow, before landing a co-EP gig on Legacies. They also describe their experience in the Showrunner Training Program, what they've learned, and how important it is to mentor others and “pay it forward.” INDEX TO THE EPISODE: 0:00 - Fun blooper from the interview. 2:01 - Interview starts, Ben & Deric describe the “geek cute” of their writing partnership, in a comic book shop. 4:44 - Deric tells about his background, and what led to them writing together. 6:52 - the years of hard work from when they started writing together to when they got into NBC Writers on the Verge, including writing a comic series and web series. 13:59 - Their experience getting into and attending the Writers on the Verge program, then staffing on Warehouse 13 while still in the program. 17:39 - Their experience writing on Warehouse 13 under showrunner Jack Kenny 21:30 - Discussion about going to set for their episodes, and different showrunner philosophies. Do they focus on trying to get work with showrunners they like? Also about stepping stones in your career. 27:12 - Puppy cameo! (Also 50:07) 31:23 - On getting fired from shows, bad showrunner experiences. Other trials and tribulations. 39:22 - Sponsor break 40:21 - All about the Showrunner Training Program — how a lot of being a good showrunner boils down to being good communicator, and hiring the right people to do each job (and then letting them do their job). 52:44 - The mentoring they've received, and paying it forward. 1:00:56 - Advice to greener writers - be patient, check your ego at the door, listen, learn, never stop being a student. Alice!Myka is here -- and we've got so much to say, it takes two episodes. In the first half of "Duped," we appreciate our writing team Benjamin Raab & Deric A. Hughes, plus we introduce a new segment called "Eureka Moment" for guest actors Erica Cerra and Niall Matter. We also are thrilled to gain further insight into the Studio 54 Disco Ball thanks to our first ever Artifact Expert Email Correspondent, New York music journalist Prof. Carol Cooper. She recognizes the manipulations that have led to this situation,” said Wendy Mericle, “Felicity has set her sights on Prometheus. This season we have said we're going to take her to a darker place, and you're seeing the genesis of the reason why, right here.” Link:http://tvline.com/2016/12/11/arrow-season-5-felicity-spoilers-billy-malone-death/ ARROW, SUPERGIRL, FLASH Go Retro In BATMAN '66 Style Animated Credits (Date: 12 Dec 2016) Fans have been pointing out similarities between Green Arrow and Batman since the 40s, when Ollie was parking his Arrowcar in his Arrowcave. Now, the Emerald Archer is following in the Dark Knight's footsteps one more time, and he's bringing the rest of CW's DC-Verse with him in this Arrow credit sequence, animated in the style of the Batman '66 TV credits by YouTube user Dave Jones. In trying to explain the story, series star Stephen Amell turned to a familiar superhero staple for audiences: Batman Begins. "Susan appears to be up to no good, but in reality, she's just following a very interesting story," Amell told reporters during a set visit back in November. "I mean, the mayor of the town where she's a reporter was clearly not on an island for five consecutive years -- which, by the way, I think it's about time we did that. I always think back to the first Nolan Batman, where Ra's al Ghul says to him 'The world is too small a place for someone like Bruce Wayne to disappear.' Even if [Oliver] wasn't as famous -- and he wasn't -- he did perish in a very famous incident in our story. I always thought when he was in Hong Kong that someone would stop him and be like, 'Hey, you look like Oliver Queen!' but it didn't happen." More than 1,800 participated — twice as many women as men — but the results proved there isn't such a great divide between the sexes after all, at least when it comes to what types of females we enjoy watching on screens. #15 is Felicity Smoak - Felicity was supposed to be a minor character, but her chemistry with Oliver Queen made her a fan favorite. By season two of The CW's adaptation of the DC comic, she was a regular player. "Felicity has developed over the course of the series," says Rickards. "She's from a regular world. She's relatable, honest and grounded. But she's not boring." During a new installment of The CW's Fan Feast, actor Carlos Valdes (Vibe) confirmed that Gypsy/Cindy Reynolds will be introduced at some point when the show returns in January. “There's going to be a new visitor to our world named Gypsy,” said Valdes. "DC Comics fans will be familiar with Gypsy. She is going to be coming in our world and Vibe will definitely get to learn some new skills as part of getting to know her. So I'm excited to see how that plays out.” Based on Valdes' comments, it's safe to assume that they'll be going with the New 52 incarnation of the character, who was a runaway from another dimension. The move came after the Oct. 21 appointment of the superhero to fight for gender equality sparked heavy criticism, with nearly 45,000 people signing an online petition asking U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to reconsider selection of the character. "Although the original creators may have intended Wonder Woman to represent a strong and independent 'warrior' woman with a feminist message, the reality is that the character's current iteration is that of a large breasted, white woman of impossible proportions," the petition read. Dozens of U.N. employees protested at the U.N. headquarters in New York City on the day of the appointment when Diane Nelson, president of DC Entertainment, said the Wonder Woman campaign would feature various initiatives "over the course of the next year." The U.N. did not provide further details as to why the Wonder Woman campaign was ending this week but spokesman Jeffrey Brez said campaigns using fictional characters often lasted no longer than a few months.
