The history of the West has always been defined by water. Long before settlers arrived, Indigenous peoples designed complex water management systems to cultivate the arid land. In the 19th and 20th centuries, large-scale engineering projects redistributed water across the West, enabling the region's rapid growth. Today, western water resources are stretched thin, and as rivers and streams dry up, so too does the environmental resiliency that's provided by healthy riparian zones.   To help address this issue, many western states are looking to beavers – long known as nature's engineers – to ensure more water is retained on the landscape. New research shows that this will help restore biodiversity and mitigate the effects of prolonged drought, unexpected flooding, and catastrophic wildfires.     In this episode of Out West, WGA policy advisors Jonah Seifer and Zach Nowak spoke with beaver experts from around the region about how these aquatic rodents can help us restore balance to the West's water systems.   For these discussions they were joined by Emily Fairfax, an ecohydrologist, beaver researcher, and Assistant Professor of Geography at the University of Minnesota; Chris Jordan, a Fisheries Biologist with NOAA's Northwest Fisheries Science Center; Alexander Funk, the Director of Water Resources and Senior Counsel at the Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership; Marshall Wolf, a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the Columbia River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission; and Jerry Altermatt, a habitat biologist with the Wyoming Game and Fish Department.

Originally, Tim was going to write a book just about his experiences starring as Eric "Otter" Stratton in the iconic comedy "Animal House," but thankfully he ultimately decided to cover his whole remarkable enduring career from "Leave It To Beaver" to "The West Wing" to "Virgin River," so get ready for fantastic stories about not just John Belushi, but also Lucille Ball, Jackie Gleason, Clint Eastwood and so many other of the legends that Tim has worked with through the years. To learn more about building community through food and "Somebody Feed the People," visit the Philanthropy page at philrosenthalworld.com.

Zero and Wiz RECOMMEND Edward Scissorhands Combining a gothic horror monster with a 1950s aesthetic and sensibility, Edward Scissorhands takes this odd mash-up and turns it into an allegorical story on being an outsider and the vapidness of suburban life. Edward has Johnny Depp as the title character who's scarred face, leather and buckle attire hides a very child-like, mousey demeanor. The character, as well as the house he is in, is evocative of classic horror films from the classic Hollywood era with it's exaggerated proportions and drapery of cob webs. And yet, instead of the characters being instantly terrified of the pasty, scissor mittened monstrosity, they are fascinatingly curious (save for the lady who believes he's a demon). This leads to the film having an absurdist, almost satirical tone that reminds of "Dennis the Menace" or "Leave It To Beaver" but where the ancillary characters are so paper thin they are used in the joke of the film itself. It's this tone that makes for the film's most potent laughs, whether it's the knowing ridiculousness of the premise or the way the other characters react to the Edward trying to function in this society he's being thrust in. But Edward's light tone and unseriousness of the characters is what gives the film the charm to buy in while the meat of the film gets fully digested into the viewer. What could have easily been a "fish out of water" comedy becomes a thoughtful story on how people treat those who are different and those who are willing to accept them. With Edward being a character that doesn't speak all that much, it's reliant on the other characters to do the heft of the work and it's Dianne Wiest and Winona Ryder's characters that do a fantastic job of providing it. Wiest's performance is both hilarious and heartwarming as she plays someone, while buying into the puddle deep intellectual lifestyle of suburban banality, is one of the few who have convictions of kindness and how hard it is to be that way in this setting. Ryder's character, although not as prominent in the film, also does a great job showing the societal pressures that Edward would have to conform to for acceptance. The film is beautifully told when sticking to that template, but when the film veers into the romance between Edward and Kim (Ryder's character) it doesn't quite hit the mark. That said, this is probably a call-back to movies where the ingenue falls for the beast that is capturing her and is not to be taken too deeply, but when the framing device of the film happens to involve that romance it seems like a stumble. Honestly though, Edward Scissorhands is another example of why I should probably watch more of Burton's older films. After watching Beetlejuice last year and thoroughly enjoying it, it might be high time to give his other films another chance. But for Edward, great performances and a surprisingly deep story make this more than an absurdist comedy with dark elements. It's a touching, thoughtful film about society and how skin deep it can be while claiming it's deeper and more profound than it truly is.

So you want to know how to be a great mom to your teenage daughter? Do you have a vision of an ideal mom in your head? Are you determining your greatness as a mom based on how your daughter treats you? Being a “great mom” is subjective to what you believe a great mom to be.  Maybe it's envisioning June Cleaver from Leave It To Beaver as your ideal SAHM who manages to keep everything tidy, never seems to yell or get angry (okay did I just age myself) or Joanna Gaines who seems to manage a thriving megabusiness making homemaking so ultra appealing all the while raising her kiddos.  BTW I love Joanna Gaines don't get me wrong.  Or maybe you're a realist and think a great mom is someone who just wants to know if what she is doing, is enough to prepare her teen girl for the life ahead of her. Are you looking for ways to communicate with your girl so she can start opening up to you? Do you want to understand why is it so hard to approach your girl? If you've ever wondered how Beaver's pal Gilbert turned out, he's doing real neat. Stephen Talbot moved on from Mayfield to become a broadcast journalist for PBS, making investigative, news-making documentary films for Frontline, Bill Moyers and American Experience. Steve joins us to discuss his boomer journey from the streets of mythical 50s suburbia to counter-culture activism, to groundbreaking documentary journalism.First, Jeffrey Sitcov heads a foundation called Doors of Change. They are positively impacting the lives of homeless kids who find themselves on the streets due to abusive home lives and/or coming out to their families as LGBTQ. Early intervention leads to inspirational success stories for these kids. The organization's annual Concert of Hope is coming to San Diego in July with headliners, KC and The Sunshine Band. 100% of the proceeds benefit the kids!Next, Stephen Talbot tells us about his lates project, The Movement and The Madman which chronicles the significant impact of the anti-war movement on Nixon and Kissinger's dangerous escalation towards increased aggression and even possibly nuclear engagement in Viet Nam. If you were protesting the war, you saved lives.Stephen was very eager to enter the family business as a kid. His parents were entertainers. His Dad, Lyle Talbot was a film and TV actor who appeared as Ozzie Nelson's bud, Joe Randolph as Steve was portraying The Beaver's bestie, Gilbert Bates. But, as Steve went on to college and became increasingly interested in politics and campus activism, Beaver went into reruns and it wasn't long before Steve's rally speeches were interrupted by signs that read, “Gee, Beav. I don't know.” The blown cover did not deter Steve. He went to work as a reporter at San Francisco's KQED and then traveled the globe, writing, producing and directing over 40 illuminating documentaries, including: Justice For Sale, The Long March of Newt Gingrich, 1968: The Year that Shaped a Generation, and Soundtracks: Music Without Borders. Jo Ann Fawcett was heavily influenced as a child by the image of the happy family from the TV show Leave it to Beaver, which left her with some - perhaps unreasonable - ideas of what a marriage should look like, but her upbringing left her without the tools to build a successful one. Jo Ann was married seven times and experienced abuse, divorce, and death of her spouse. Her last marriage, to an inmate, lasted 20 years. Now, she's sharing her hard-earned lessons with the next generation, the most important being: you are enough. Guest Bio Jo Ann Fawcett is a native Californian now living in Portland OR. She has a thriving bookkeeping practice called Jo Ann Richards Bookkeeping. She is the mother of a grown daughter and proud grandmother of three. Jo Ann dramatically changed her life after seven marriages that included abuse, divorce, death, and being a prison wife. She left the Mormon Church after 30 years and never looked back. She found her strengths, gifts, and inner power, learning that dreams do come true. Midlife Magic, a memoir, is her first book. She is currently writing a second book, The Prince Was Wrong. Jo Ann welcomes opportunities to share her story with audiences that serve women feeling stressed, overwhelmed, and ‘stuck' in their relationships.Turning 40 and Marrying an InmateIn this episode of the Forty Drinks Podcast, Stephanie interviews Jo Ann Fawcett, a woman who had multiple marriages including a long-term relationship with a partner in prison.
