Series: Romans | The Gospel | The Foundation of MissionTitle: Week 2 | Do You Love the ChurchText: Romans 1:8-13Teacher: Chris Synesael
Welcome to this week's sermon from Trinity Church of Portland titled, "Do You Love?" This comes on the heels of the topic of love we heard last week in 1 Corinthians 13. This week, Andrey Gorban brings us a message from 1 John 4:7-11 on the topic of love, which we learned last week is the more excellent way. In our text this morning we see from John's first letter the centrality of love for the Christian. Love is to be what we are known by and it has an attractional beauty to people when love is present in a church and amongst a group of people.
We're joined by Tyler Coston, Mark Cascio from SAVI Coaching, and Shane Kuyper from The Healthy Competitor to provide their expert insights and experiences on these topics.

I am not the first person to reiterate that we have an empathy crisis in our world. We’ve created walls of privilege to shielded ourselves from the pain and struggles of humanity. Racism has been prominent in America for centuries. But when Colin Kaepernick kneeled at football games most of American Christianity mocked him in anger. Now George Floyd, another black human in a long list of dead black Americans murdered at the hand of the police has seemingly awoken some Christians to finally wake up and publicly engage the problem. “Racism isn't getting worse, it's getting filmed.” - Will Smith MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE: WHITE HOMEWORK COACHING WITH ZAC GANDARA: It's time for change. The Theory of Cultural Determinism states that we as humans are either infinitely malleable and able to change, or we are programmed by our culture and cannot move outside of that programming. Many of us grew up with the obligation to honor parents, authority, family members simply because it was the culturally pressured thing to do. This led to a lot of silenced abuse. I no longer believe we need to honor those that are not honorable. Love and forgiveness are for us, honor is for those who have earned it. If your story threatens the life someone else has built to protect themselves from knowing their own trauma, not only will they rewound us by rejecting our story, but they will rearrange the story to fit their narrative so they can remain safe.
