Sixty years ago, medical trail blazer and veterinary orthopedic surgeon Lincoln Parkes built the first “dog cart” for his surgical patients. They could wheel themselves about while they recovered from surgery and maintain their strength. Since then K9 Carts, the business born of Dr. Parkes' simple contraption, has kept millions of dogs mobile from Florida to Nepal. Dogs use wheelchairs to recover from surgery, but also during recovery or illness. Their humans, some of whom join us for today's show, have adaptations to make, but those are well worth it to care for their dogs with disabilities. The Humane Animal Welfare Society in Waukesha frequently takes over the custody of dogs from over-crowded shelters in Southern states where they face the risk of euthanasia. These dogs have a higher likelihood of finding a forever home in Wisconsin. The trips to bring these dogs closer to a better life can be grueling and expensive. Deaf dogs don't get adopted, and we tend to feel really badly if our own dogs go deaf. What ignorant humans we are! On today's show we hear from leading voices in the deaf dog advocacy community, and they set us straight. Turns out that if you can train, care for, and live with a hearing-enabled dog, you'll love training, caring for, and living with a deaf dog, too. And yes, sign language for dogs is a real thing, and it works, just as well as voice commands. Deafness can even be a doggy superpower. These dogs can perform with zero distractions in high volume circumstances that would make a hearing-enabled dog spin out. In fact, deaf dogs have broken two Guinness World Records. It's a lot to take in, but we promise, you will reform your own attitude toward hearing after listening to our guests today … and you'll also have some simple ways to test your dog's hearing at home. Guests Terrie Hayward is the founder of Positive Animal Wellness, an online resource for all-around positive reinforcement training that also specializes in deaf dogs. Salon manager Sam Burton said: "I think she's really cute in her own way." Which dog has the strongest bite? Some scientists did a study a few years ago and it's resurfaced in the news this week. The top three were as follows: (1) The Kangal has the strongest bite of any breed of dog – an impressive 743 psi. This makes them particularly good at guarding livestock from predators in their native Turkey (2) The Dogue de Bordeaux has a fearsome bite strength of 556 psi - although this breed is notoriously so lazy they are unlikely to often use it. (3) The Mastiff's impressive 552 psi bite has been used to great effect over the years in everything from guarding villages to hunting wolves. Oodie for dogs! Dog breeding can be a highly controversial topic. Why bring more puppies into the world when there are still dogs needing homes in shelters? In today's episode, we explore that perception with some thoughtful input from two of our expert guests. A lot goes into the process of becoming a responsible dog breeder: What costs are involved? How do you actually “breed” dogs? What breed should you choose? How do you even get started? We hear from one breeder in Canada who went all the way to Brazil to find exactly what she was looking for to start her line of dogs. And did you know that some dogs require artificial insemination? Do you know how much that COSTS? Once mom is through labor and the so cute pups arrive, the intensive labor for humans is just beginning. Raising them is a hands-on endeavor, and then playing lifelong matchmaker for the little darlings is not as easy as you might thing. Everyone wants a cute puppy, but who will be a great match, and who will give up on your sweet little ball of fluff and send them back to your loving arms? If you're thinking it's all worth it because they make a lot of money, you might be sobered by the financial reality check our guests share. You've come home from work to discover evidence your dog has diarrhea. Ugh. It continues, and you call the vet. No appointments for two weeks, unless you want to pay for an emergency visit … but this doesn't seem like a huge emergency. Most veterinary visits are for the same few problems. Wouldn't it be nice if you could get basic health tests – like fresh poop samples you scrape off your floor – done from home, and get the results back in time for your scheduled veterinary visit? Today we are speaking with CEO Jen Hagness of MySimplePetLab, the first from home general wellness company. MySimplePetLab offers at-home and from-clinic testing kits for dogs and cats. The test kits are designed by veterinarians, and MySimplePetLab provides the tests, shipping to their lab for testing, and the results delivered to both you and your vet. If you take a look at your dog, it's not always clear what its body parts are used for. Sure, eyes are for seeing, ears are for hearing––but why is a dog's nose wet? And why do some of them have floppy ears? Dogs have an extra set of front claws that don't even touch the ground. What do those do? And as for anal glands … why in the world do they need to be expressed? In this episode, Jim and Clare shrink down to the size of a flea and take an exciting tour of your dog's body. We have grieved the loss of our dogs ever since they first became man's best friend, thousands of years ago. Everyone experiences loss in their own way, but it is a pain that is shared by everyone who has ever loved a dog. But is there anything you can do to prepare for that grief? Our guest Nancy Gordon works to raise awareness about the different stages of pet grief, and how to process the guilt and heartache from end-of-life decisions. As a licensed clinical social worker and certified life coach, Nancy understands the pain of loss through her personal journey. After a terrible car accident, she had to leave her practice and focus on her own recovery with chronic illness and debilitating pain. Relief from the pain (both physical and mental) came to her through her service dogs, Pink and Toaster. But then, the inevitable happened. Both of her service dogs had to cross over the rainbow bridge and Nancy was left navigating that loss. Taking what she learned from that experience, Nancy continues to help others through the dark days that follow the death of a beloved pet. In today's touching conversation, Jim and Nancy discuss anticipatory grief and how facing that inevitable loss ahead of time can help transform that experience for you and your dog. Today on the show we discuss the history and evolution of dog training. Dog training now looks very different than it did just a few decades ago. It used to be commonly accepted that the best way to train a dog was to punish them when they did something wrong. Whether it was spanking them, rubbing their nose in their accidents, or using choke chains or shock collars. But things are changing. This evolution of dog training has taken us from punishment and pain training, to something much more powerful. Shannon Riley-Coyner created Truly Force Free animal training to help you train your dog without using pain or fear. Shannon has over 30 years of experience training dogs and is optimistic about the direction her industry is heading: towards more positive reinforcement. On today's episode, Shannon shares with us the evolution of dog training, what science tells us about how dogs learn, and what to look for in a trainer. Today on the show is our Christmas celebration! We are sharing the story of Jenine Stanley who was born legally blind and spent much of her life believing she did not need a guide dog. Everything changed when she moved to the city. Finding she needed help navigating the busy streets and noisy atmosphere, she found her first guide dog. While it may not have been love at first sight, it was love at first “feel.” Jenine now works to help others receive the love and assistance that only a service dog can give. To celebrate her beloved dogs, Jenine writes a new Christmas poem every year. In this special episode, we perform her version of “Twas the Night Before Christmas”. Grab a cup of cocoa and snuggle up with your pup, because it's about to get real cozy! Today on the show: dog geniuses. What does it mean to be a truly gifted dog? Researcher Dr. Claudia Fugazza has been on a mission to better understand how dogs learn. She is particularly interested in the dogs that can memorize dozens of toy names. Everyone thinks they have the smartest dog in the world (or at least the best!) but what makes a dog a prodigy? Dogs like Chaser, a border collie who has purportedly learned the name of over 1,000 toy names! But that kind of talent is very rare. And it's not well known why they are able to do this. Is it breed? The way they were trained? Were they just born talented? Dr. Fugazza and her colleagues at the University of Budapest want to find more. Thus, the Genius Dog Challenge was born. In her search to better understand talent and language in dogs, Dr. Fugazza has started an online initiative to study smart dogs around. In this conversation, we delve into the world of dog learning, and you will find out how to test if your dog is a genius. Some say humans learns best through story, and when you look at the history of dogs in folklore, you see plenty of evidence. One story about one single dog can influence the way humans feel about dogs – or that type of dog – for years, decades, centuries, even millenia. For thousands of years, seeing seeing a black dog was a good sign, a helpful warning from the spiritual world … or something quite sinister. Author D.S. Nelson calls forth some ancient stories so we moderns can see just how far we've come. Or have we? Dr. Stanley Coren pitches in with a thoroughly contemporary tale of a vicar's wife who saw a ghostly dog figure and attributed a death to it. New folklore tales like this have impact on the daily life of millions of black dogs. Superstitious human folk are not lost to the mists of time, as folklorist Mark Norman reminds us. Of course, some folklore is positive, like the guardian dogs you find in tales throughout the centuries, and even in contemporary literature. Why, even Disney's eternally popular Lady & The Tramp is based on a folk tale about a loyal Welsh hound. Folklorist Ceallaigh MacCath-Moran weighs in with insight about how folklore is created every day in unusual ways. For example, every episode of Dog Edition creates lore … so listen today, and every week, to find out what tall tails future humans will tell. On today's show we hear from Jen Danna, a crime novelist whose FBI K9 novel series explores the world of FBI agent Meg Jennings and her search-and-rescue dog Hawk. If you're thinking “I thought that series was written by Sara Driscoll,” you're right. Sara Driscoll is a joint pen name for Danna, a Canadian infectious disease researcher, and her co-author, Ann Vanderlaan, a Texan oil biz technical writer. Their very different work and their shared passion for writing inspired them to pen seven novels under their joint pseudonym. Danna's dedication to scientific accuracy drives her storytelling. She shares what she has learned about the deep connection between FBI working dogs and their handlers. Danna also talks about the seventh novel in their series, “Still Waters,” which has been published half-posthumously after Vanderlaan's death earlier this year. Even as she celebrates the new novel, Danna reflects on how she will continue Meg Jennings' story now that she has lost her other writing half. This episode is the second installment of Wag The Vote!, our dog-centric, non-partisan, on-going campaign to encourage voter participation. Dogs are the ultimate “good citizens” … and we think they want us humans to be good citizens, too. In this episode: dog mayors. (Yes, that's a thing.) Are dogs being elected to public office a sign of democratic collapse? Political hijinks to install a figurehead, a mere puppet for the masters pulling the other end of the leash? Or are they the natural end result of civically engaged communities? Today, we talk about the how and the why of successful canine campaigns for mayor. Unless it's happened in your town, you might not realize there are quite a few animal mayors, especially in America. From the first mule candidate elected in 1938, to a town that has had animal mayors since 1998, we discuss the good, the bad, and the downright ridiculous. Too many people face a cold reality when their dog gets sick: they want to give vet care, but simply cannot afford it. Ways to cope vary, including hoping and wishing the problem will disappear on its own, reducing pain and other medication use to “make them last,” and even euthanizing a dog who might recover with proper care. It's devastating for the family members and the veterinarians and their staff who must help them make these terrible choices. When money is the issue, and money is not there, no question has an easy answer. Our guest today is Dr. Michael Blackwell, the founder of AlignCare Health. His organization is a national, community-funded One Health interprofessional system that helps families with limited means get access to veterinary care. In other words, he helps keep families together, regardless of species. Dr. Michael Blackwell's received his calling to help after hearing about a veteran whose dog was put to sleep because he could not afford his treatments. What was the problem? A police officer had shot his dog (unjustly), and the resulting injuries required extensive and expensive procedures. The veteran's utter loss and devastating pain “lit a fire” in Dr. Blackwell's soul. That's when the high-ranking government official and educator decided to start breaking down economic barriers that prevent pets and their families from getting the care they need. Dr. Blackwell joins us for an in-depth, moving discussion about how our pet's care influences our own health and healthcare, and why affordable veterinary care is critical to our health as a species and citizens. The cost of pet care has skyrocketed in the last ten years, and no, it's not just inflation. We've demanded better medical care for our non-human family members … and the industry has responded. When vets are asked to do more than “give a shot” … a vaccine, antibiotic, or steroid … the medical standards rise. And so do costs. State-of-the-art equipment costs money, as do overhead and labor. Good medicine costs good money, it turns out. Today, we do a deep dive into the inner workings of the veterinary medical industry and its complex economics. We explore the heavy impact the pandemic has had on veterinarians and their clinics. Why are so many mom-n-pop practices selling to corporate networks? Why have so many veterinarians and veterinary technicians left the field, even as demand rises? Is pet insurance a good option, or is it only adding complexity to an already-tangled situation? Historical inefficiencies must be set aside to modernize the industry … are there innovations coming that will help veterinarians help more dogs with even better medicine? Every dog-loving human has their own idea about what being dog-friendly means. For some, it's the neighbor who switches to non-toxic snail bait. For others, it's a dog water bowl in front of a business, or a grassy dog park in an otherwise quiet neighborhood. But some humans have bigger ideas, like creating dog-friendly architecture and dog-friendly legislation. Dog-friendly school curriculums and dog-friendly business models. How do we include human's best friend in our life design efforts? Beth Miller, the founder of Wagtown, joins us to talk about the macroeconomic and health benefits of dog-friendly planning. Her non-profit helps communities define what dog-friendly means to them … and then become more dog friendly. In Miller's world, dollars follow dogs. Creating more dog-friendly spaces impacts economic development, business growth, housing markets … and even our own lifespans, which are longer when we share them with dogs. Wagtown has been involved in many dog-friendly planning projects. Beth shares how they changed patio laws for the state of Ohio in a “Pups on Patio” campaign. Ocean liners, the majestic hotels of the sea, have never been built just for humans. Since their invention in 1840, they have accommodated many other species. In the early days, the animals who voyaged were fresh food for human passengers, so they didn't quite complete the crossing. But that changed around the turn of the century, when passengers started asking to bring their pets on the trip. Shipping operators figured out how to let companion animals make themselves at home at sea. The most memorable ocean liner, the Titanic, was perhaps the most infamous of the ships to accommodate pets. She left Southampton for her maiden voyage with over 2000 passengers and crew … and twelve dogs on board. The dogs lived in luxury for a few days … until the ship hit the iceberg. What happened to the dogs? Ian Murphy at Liverpool's Maritime Museum and Janette McCutcheon, author of several books about ocean liners, tell us about each … including an incredible tale of owner loyalty. Make sure you have your handkerchief in hand! By the 1930's, ships were attracting movie stars, businesspeople, and other wealthy and glamorous passengers. And yes, they wanted their animals with them on the crossing. Who were the crew members tasked with looking after the dogs? Today only one ocean liner is left in service: the Queen Mary 2. Perhaps it's the law of supply and demand that explains why the wait list for kenneled passengers is two years … but is it waning supply, or increasing demand? Humans choose to cross on Queen Mary 2 for a variety of reasons, from cost savings to phobia avoidance to health concerns. We speak to passengers who've made the trip and report how their dogs liked being on ship in a confined space with a strict diet. Was it a floating spa, or something … else? Veterinarians are animal lovers, and many expect their career to be all about spending quality time with animals. Reality is a little different, though. First, veterinary school is hard. It's also expensive. When vets graduate, their starting yearly salary might be half of their debt burden. Practicing animal medicine is an emotional roller coaster, and every day features new and more loop-the-loops. Over the course of a single workday, a general practice veterinarian goes from handling a playful kitten to helping someone understand their pet is dying. This daily fluctuation in emotional tone is sometimes called the killing-caring paradox. It can take a heavy toll on caregivers. And now things are changing. Pet health providers have responded to pet parents viewing their dogs and cats as family members. The medicine is better, the vet practice is safer, and the stakes are even higher than they have been. Where does that leave the veterinarians? On today's show, we discuss changes in veterinary medicine, and how to improve wellness for those who care for our pets. George Melillo is the CEO and founder of a chain of veterinary hospitals called Heart + Paw. In his hospitals, the veterinarian's mental well-being is the priority … with the aim of improving pet care, as well. George Melillo's innovations may seem simple, but they could be seen as revolutionary. Aiming to reduce stress in an incredibly stressful profession, he gives veterinarians more autonomy when it comes to scheduling and includes pet parents are included in all aspects of care. Most of us think dogs are loyal to us humans because we provide them with creature comforts: food, shelter, belly rubs. But that's not the full story. Loyalty is deeply ingrained into canine DNA. Close bonds with humans were a crucial part of their evolution from wolves, and it's one of the most prevalent features of dogs today. In this episode, guests Dr. James Serpell, Professor Anne Burrows, and Amanda Matoske shed light on the science behind dog loyalty. Spoiler alert: when a human gazes into a dog's eyes, and the dog gazes back, both species release the same hormone: oxytocin. That's the “cuddle hormone” or “love hormone” that forms deep bonds! James and Clare also share stories of two of history's most loyal dogs, Fido and Hachiko. About James Serpell James Serpell is professor Emeritus of Ethics and Animal Welfare at the School of Veterinary Medicine, University of Pennsylvania. He does research in anthrozoology and specializes in the behavior and welfare of companion animals. About Anne Burrows Anne Burrows is a biological anthropologist and professor at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. Today on the show, Valerie Reid, who started the non-profit Whispering Willows Senior Dog Sanctuary. The mission? To provide an extraordinary retirement community for senior dogs who find themselves unhoused and unhumaned. Elderly dogs find their way to Valerie for one of several reasons. Their human may have passed, and their surviving family members can't provide proper care. Other dogs come from horrendous hoarding situations. Others are rescued from horrible conditions at drug houses. Peanut, who watches over Valerie throughout this conversation, is a drug house rescue. As he sits on Valerie's lap, you would never guess this serene little one-eyed gentleman was found blistered and scalded and in desperate need of care. He was left in a cage in 90-degree weather with no food or water. Those who used the drug house he was rescued from didn't let him out to pee, so he had terrible urine scald. His skin was blistered from the beating sun. Who would take in such a pathetic creature, who had so much need? Whispering Willows, Valerie's nonprofit. Whispering Willows is a senior dogs' paradise. A gracious home on five acres of fenced property in Missouri gives them shelter and food and companionship for the rest of their days. The dogs are never left alone or caged. They have free range to go where they want, whenever they want. They receive 24-hour care and live as a family with their Caregivers. They are never, ever alone, right up until the end. About Valerie Reid Valerie Reid is the President and Founder of Whispering Willows. Since starting the sanctuary, Whispering Willows has been able to offer full time care for over 600 senior dogs. When the pandemic ground the world to a halt, Emma was studying in France, an ocean and a continent away from her home. Returning to Oregon to be closer to her family, she did what many other Americans did that year: adopt a puppy. Hope was a rescue from Texas: a sweet, traumatized Pitbull. Despite the pandemic restrictions' and wildfire season's best efforts, Emma and Hope formed a quick, intense bond. Hope turned out to be Emma's great love, and so she never considered leaving her behind when she was offered a place in Glasgow to continue her studies. But Hope was terribly afraid of loud noises, and would never get on a plane. What to do? Perhaps a trip on the Queen Mary 2 was in order. It's the only ship that carries animals across the Atlantic. But, wait: it turns out that Hope's breed is banned in the UK! How was this girl going to get this dog into that country? Emma turned to her mother, Lucy, for help, and the two of them planned a truly epic itinerary. Today we hear their story, and talk to Dr Sam Gaines of the RSPCA about the Dangerous Dogs Act, which has prohibited Pitbull ownership in the UK since 1991. It's likely that you have watched some of the animals Mark Harden has trained. Do any of these titles ring a bell: Stuart Little, Hachiko, Dracula, Arachnophobia, or Pirates of the Caribbean? Today we are headed to Argentina to a dog shelter that cares for 500 dogs! We will learn about the creative ways this shelter has increased adoptions, particularly of disabled dogs. To show how lovable and happy these dogs are, every year the shelter El Campito hosts a Disabled Dog Parade. Our hosts also discuss the poor conditions of some of the underfunded and overcrowded dog shelters in the country and how police carry out raids on backyard breeders. Many of the rescued dogs, like the 97 Doxens featured in this episode, get sent to the shelter for rehabilitation. El Campito knows that saving dogs is only half the job. Queen Elizabeth II is known for her love of corgis, which began when she was gifted one in 1933 when she was very much a child. Over the next 89 years, her corgis were constant companions, and the breed became something of a mascot for her reign. We say that dog lovers are a breed apart, and we are proud that Britain's longest reigning monarch was one of our most regal pack members. Today, we look back at her royal canine dynasty. What makes corgis suited for palace life ... and did the Queen save a dying breed? Even though we can't quite understand how this is possible, we concede that not all the members of the royal family had a good relationship with the monarch's dogs. So, we also examine whether the Queen's husband loved -- or merely tolerated – these short-legged cattle dogs. Another question: was the Duchess of Sussex welcomed by the Queen's favorite pups? We also examine the role corgis played in Princess Elizabeth's childhood and how she drew on their steady, loving presence for comfort throughout her epic reign. Dogs appear onscreen in some of the most beloved films and TV shows of all time. But what happens behind the scenes to make the magic? Training involves long hours of work, repetition, and most of all, ingenuity on behalf of the trainer. Huge wildfires are devastating in every way possible. Forests are burned down, and the wildlife that lives there does, too. Human lives are lost, and homes are, too. And for some, the tragedy is compounded by the need for quick escape. When you're fleeing for your life you may not have time to pack a change of clothes and grab your important documents, let alone box up your most precious possessions. Fire survivors have much to mourn, but one of the most acute losses, many say, is leaving the cremains of their loved ones behind. Host Clare Mansell met one of these “career change” dogs and is happy to report that he is doing just fine as an animal ambassador, a position that is becoming more common as hotels offer comfort and accommodations to pet family members. Stewart, a Labrador retriever, had spent four years in training with Canadian Guide Dogs For The Blind before realizing he wasn't meant to be a guide dog. After a brief job search, he landed at the Chateau Laurier, Ottawa's 5-star hotel, and settled for a new life of leisure greeting guests and playing fetch in the elegant hallways. Clare visits Stewart as he works … and he shows her all his favorite spots, including a few that are technically off-limits. Looking for some joy amid a global pandemic, Stephanie Nelson adopted tiny Juniper. It seemed like a perfect match, a wonderful addition to the family. But very quickly they realized the painful truth: Junipers needed more than their family could provide. Most dog lovers are afraid to share their rescues fails, fearing judgement and alienation. Some think it's better to just power through: keep the dog and hope it will end well. But the opposite is often true. Returning the dog is desperately hard (as Stephanie knows firsthand) but sometimes, it's the right thing to do. Everyone always says, "we don't deserve dogs." But maybe dogs don't deserve us! We take care of their every need and we can never truly be sure of their motives. Nope, that's a horrible take. Dogs are perfect and today's guest, James Jacobson shares a story that highlights one of the many reasons. James is the Founder of Dog Podcast Network. James was promised a dog when he turned 10 years old. Instead, his parents bought him a Panasonic tape recorder. Although it didn't fetch, roll over and certainly wasn't adorable, it would eventually be a tool that would help shape his life. Check out all of DPN's shows here!
