When Elaine Ostrander decided to focus her genetics work on dogs, some of her colleagues thought she'd lost her way. But she's proven, over and over, that comparing dog genes to human genes unlocks many secrets and leads to solid therapies. “The days of doing a siloed approach to science are long gone,” Dr. Ostrander declares. And she has every right to. We join guest host James Jacobson for a mind-expanding conversation with Dr. Ostrander of the National Institute of Health. We learn so much about how genes shape dogs (literally) and how the shapes they take help us understand our own human DNA. They discuss the role of genes in behavior in dogs, and how new research points toward the possibility that neurodivergent people with things like ADHD and autism might have similar genetic profiles to certain dogs. Join us for a powerful conversation with a woman who helps scientists understand their field, creates tools for everyone to use, and is a super dog lover … even bringing her not-super-smart Border Collie, Tess, to work so she could “work” with the families of her cancer patients and lab partners. Many dogs have helped men with presidential ambitions get elected, and one even helped a President prevent nuclear catastrophe. Andrew Hager, Historian-in-Residence at the Presidential Pet Museum, joins host James Jacobson to discuss the presidential pooches who have pooped on the White House lawn. Ronald Reagan had Lucky. JFK was gifted Pushinka. Richard Nixon defended Checkers. Most American Presidents have been dog lovers, too … even dogs so naughty one was named Satan. Andrew tells tall tales about the dogs we've loved, including our current #DOTUS (Dog of the United States), and the first shelter dog, Major. About Andrew Hager Andrew Hager has been historian-in-residence at the Presidential Pet Museum since 2017. Prior to that, he spent a decade teaching middle school social studies for Baltimore County Public Schools. He graduated from Towson University with an undergraduate degree in Political Science and a Master's in the Art of Teaching. Andrew understands firsthand the power of a canine companion. He is legally blind and travels with a black Labrador Retriever guide dog named Sammy. Andrew also has two cats, a fish, and a fluffy mixed-breed rescue dog named Emmy. About ALL-AMERICAN DOGS: A History of Presidential Pets from Every Era by Andrew Hager Not only is the book filled with incredible facts about presidential pets, but Hager includes his original research and some rare photographs from the National Archives to trace the history of America's first dogs as well. Readers will learn not only past presidents' dogs in each historical era, but also the cultural history of dogs as pets too. This book is perfect for pet-lovers and history-buffs alike! Ed Jamison is an animal welfare pioneer. Using data to convince sceptics, he has helped governments in Ohio and Texas transform their animal control programs into animal welfare programs. Ed's initiative City Dogs rebranded bully breeds to convince locals that pit bulls are great pets to adopt. He built play yards at the Ohio city shelter, complete with pools, and filled social media with clips of pitties playing together. To further make the point that pitties are great pets, he started a jogging group for marathon trainers to run with shelter dogs ... and take them to dog-friendly bars and cafes. His work in Texas was similarly revolutionary, and his methods have been replicated all over the country, saving lives and improving life quality for dogs and humans alike. Ed recently joined Operation Kindness, a no-kill shelter in Carrollton, Texas, as director. For the first time, his work is non-governmental. He speaks with host James Jacobson about how private support and funding have expanded his already big ideas. About Operation Kindness While the organization has evolved since 1976, they have always remained committed to giving every animal the care and kindness they deserve. Its mission is to care for homeless cats and dogs in a no-kill environment until each is adopted into responsible homes and to advocate humane values and behavior. Operation Kindness has a robust enrichment program to keep our dogs and cats entertained while at the shelter. They make use of egg cartons, toilet paper rolls, gallon jugs, unworn socks, and paper grocery bags! Donations can be dropped off at the shelter at 3201 Earhart Drive in Carrollton, TX. https://www.operationkindness.org/ About Ed Jamison Ed Jamison became CEO of Operation Kindness in March of 2021. Previously, Ed was Chief Animal Control Officer for the City of Cleveland. He then served as the Director of Dallas Animal Services (DAS), where he led a staff of more than 200 employees, rebuilt the volunteer base, and instituted new, progressive programming. Ed's policies and programs have been copied all over the country. He is currently the President of Texas Unites, Vice President of the National Animal Care & Control Association, and Board Member for the Association of Animal Welfare Advancement and Shelter Animals Count. Ed's love for animals means that he also has many pets at home, including a few foster fails. His pets include his dogs (Gurble and Esme), cats (Bertram, Deliah, Riley, Weston, Nestor, Merwin, Scrappy, and Kiwi), goldfish (Iragoo), cows (Cookie, Sprout, and Oliver), and miniature donkeys (Fern and Evie). Everyone always says, "we don't deserve dogs." But maybe dogs don't deserve us! We take care of their every need and we can never truly be sure of their motives. Nope, that's a horrible take. Dogs are perfect and today's guest, James Jacobson shares a story that highlights one of the many reasons. James is the Founder of Dog Podcast Network. James was promised a dog when he turned 10 years old. Instead, his parents bought him a Panasonic tape recorder. Although it didn't fetch, roll over and certainly wasn't adorable, it would eventually be a tool that would help shape his life. Check out all of DPN's shows here! But after reading the best-selling book The Art of Racing in the Rain by author Garth Stein, Bomback did two things: adopted his yellow lab Jagger and wrote a tear-jerking-screenplay. A golden retriever, Enzo (voice by Kevin Costner) believes that after dogs die, they are reincarnated as a human. This philosophy drives Enzo to learn everything he can from his racecar driving human played by Milo Ventimiglia. Enzo helps his family navigate moments of joy and great sorrow, paying close attention in the hopes that next time, he can be one of them. Join host James Jacobson for a moving and funny conversation with Mark Bomback about love, dogs, and Enzo's philosophy. About Mark Bomback In 1994 Mark Bomback got his first job: as an assistant for Eagles' guitarist Glenn Frey. He held that job for a year before going on to become a screenwriter. His first credited screenplay was The Night Caller (1998). He has since gone on to co-write the scripts for numerous blockbuster films, including Live Free or Die Hard (2007), The Wolverine (2013) and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014). He's also done uncredited rewrites on several other high-profile films, such as Fifty Shades of Grey (2015), Logan (2017) and The Mummy (2017.) His most recent project is the crime drama miniseries Defending Jacob produced by Apple TV+, and the American war drama film White Bird: A Wonder Story (2022). Founder and co-host of the Dog Podcast Network and a life-long dog lover, James Jacobson is a multi-passionate entrepreneur. He's the author of 'How to Meditate with Your Dog: An Introduction to Meditation for Dog Lovers.' Our conversation covers a significant part of his life, including his three dog podcasts and a few of his business ventures; a book best-selling book from his publishing company, and a biotech nutraceutical company dedicated to canine health.
My dear friend Mary Omwake made her transition on April 14th. I talk with her Hānai son. James Jacobson about How wonderful Mary is. He wrote this about her. As a minister, she coached us to look at ourselves with kindness and humor. Her wit was wicked and on full display every time she spoke. Her services were filled with music, inspiration, and laughter. Watching her "set the field" and give a talk was one of my greatest pleasures. A friend once called her a "spiritual comedienne." I don't think that was Mary's favorite description, but I think it was the most accurate. Ram Dass, Wayne Dyer, and Barbara Marx Hubbard (to name just a few) were some of her biggest fans. I know they've grabbed front row seats to her act now that she's been reunited with her loved ones who went on before her. Other than through heredity, Mary was like a mother to me in all ways. And in all ways, I was her son. I can not bear to describe the depth of my love for her, or my devotion to her. I know that I am not everyone's cup of tea, but I am glad I was hers. I could not do for her all of the things she needed, but I am glad I was able to do the things she needed done that no one else could do. I am eternally grateful to Mary for her love and support and wisdom. And her laughter. And her jokes. And her prayers. Mary, I would say rest in peace, but I know that's not likely. Your body is already well taken care of, and your soul is almost certainly partying with your friends and family-- and your cats. I know that you will be there for all of us as we wake up. I am grateful to her for being my mother. I am so grateful to her biological family for sharing her with me. And I am grateful to the thousands of friends and colleagues who I know are also mourning Mary now.
James Jacobson has founded several companies and is a serial entrepreneur whose career has primarily been focused in the media arena since graduating from the University of Virginia in 1988. Currently James is building Dog Podcast Network. In the past several years, James has been putting his attention on a promising cancer therapeutic company he co-founded with Dr. Demian Dressler in 2008 called Functional Nutriments. James Jacobson has been described as both “a serial entrepreneur” and as a “monk in the marketplace.” He has authored best-selling books, been a broadcaster and built businesses that leveraged new trends that were sometimes considered “just a little ahead of their time.” The overarching theme of his career has been building ventures that make a meaningful difference in the lives of as many people as possible. For over 20 years, that took the form of creating projects and companies that leveraged the power of media including teleproduction, radio, publishing and, the Internet. Since 2008, James Jacobson's focus has been on Functional Nutriments, a biotech company that has developed and brought to market first-in-class nutraceuticals that induce and support apoptosis. Apoptosis is a critical biological life process that is encoded in the DNA; and the absence of normal levels of apoptosis is linked to serious diseases including cancer. Businesses that he developed, founded or helped co-found include a video yearbook company, a teleproduction and video marketing company, a talk radio station, a cable TV network, an e-commerce company, a magazine publisher, a book publisher, and a biotech nutraceutical firm. His author credits include "How to Meditate with Your Dog" and the best-selling series "Top Maui Restaurants" which he co-authored with his wife, Molly Jacobson. “do what you love, be passionate about what you love and don't do it for the money. If you love money don't be an entrepreneur be a salesperson… If you are going to dedicate your life and your blood and your sweat and your tears and your shower time and endanger relationships should be for something that you really, really love. And I think that's so critical and I think sometimes especially at the beginning of someone's entrepreneurial journey they are just looking to make the quick buck that usually… I won't say never… That usually doesn't work out in the long-term and it certainly doesn't pay the psychic dividends that will feed you when you come across adverse”…[Listen for More] Click Here for Show Notes To Listen or to Get the Show Notes go to https://wp.me/p6Tf4b-giv

Paul Owens, AKA the original Dog Whisperer, wants you to breathe. Oxygenating the blood and calming the mind is essential to being a good dog trainer. It's also a simple, fast, minute-by-minute way to be kind to yourself. And he's all about kindness. Paul's positive, force-free training techniques work. Why? Because he uses behavioral science, as do “about 50%” of dog trainers working today. But his scientific understanding of the way neurons learn isn't the only tool he uses. He also approaches dogs – and people – as natural friends and companions. Science, rooted in kindness and compassion. Join host James Jacobson for an insightful, often funny conversation with a trainer who, by his own admission, has had an epiphany. You might just learn something yourself by the end of this episode. And that will be good, for you, and for your dog. About Paul Owens Paul Owens, the “original” Dog Whisperer, has been training dogs for over 45 years. Once a classical trainer who used choke collars and shame-based techniques, he has found a new and better way. Now Paul is one of the world's leading proponents of positive, force-free, nonviolent animal training. His books and DVDs have been translated into several languages and sold over 600,000 units worldwide. His message of kind and compassionate dog training has reached more than 5 million people through his products, articles, classes, seminars, and television and print interviews. Here's an unexpected perk Mark Bomback got for writing The Art of Racing in the Rain: he got to make people cry. The prolific screenwriter is more accustomed to writing big action movies, where trains blow up and buildings fall. But after his script about a dog narrating his last canine incarnation was released, he saw people crying on planes as they watched it on in-flight entertainment. The movie, which stars Kevin Costner as Enzo, and Milo Ventimiglia as his human, was released right in a weird time for the movie business. We had just stopped going to the theaters and started streaming films instead. Now that The Art of Racing in the Rain is on Disney+, more folks are seeing it and it's sparking a real conversation. Do dogs reincarnate as humans, as the book the movie is based upon posits? Join host James Jacobson for a conversation about love, dogs, and art. It's a special conversation with a special artist whose movie is the Terms of Endearment for dog lovers. This week we are celebrating a decade (10 years) of Dog Cancer Answers. To ring in this milestone, we are revisiting the episode that started it all in 2011. Filmed between host James Jacobson and principal author of The Dog Cancer Survival Guide, Dr. Demian Dressler—the interview is overflowing with time-tested, rock-solid dog cancer recommendations and advice. Aimed to help you focus, plan, and create actionable steps that will help you help your dog fight (and even beat) their cancer. This week’s show covers a multitude of topics on cancer prevention and cancer treatments. These topics include, but aren’t limited to: chemical carcinogens in pet foods, why superheated kibble can be bad for your dog, the best time to spay and neuter your dog for cancer prevention, psychoneuroimmunology as it relates to cancer recovery and cancer prevention, what you should know about the effects of chemotherapy and radiation drugs, melatonin and sleep: how they play a role in helping your dog fight cancer, and of course, the biggest lesson of all, why Dr. Dressler wants to empower YOU to be your dog’s advocate! When I searched for the word "Random" in a podcast directory, there were over 50 shows, with many of them talking about "whatever." Today I'm going to share why I think this is a bad idea and how being focused has help Carey Green get 8000+ downloads per episode for his Morning Mindset Daily Christian Devotional podcast. How I've Seen Random Fail As a teacher for decades, I can say I've seen how humans are not fans of change. They like things to stay the same and be predictable. As a musician, I saw establishments that had comedy on Monday, Metal on Tuesday, Country on Wednesday.... in trying to have something for everyone, they alienated everyone as you never know what night it was. I had a dog for 14 years, and for many years all of my friends made up their own nickname. The dog heard random name after random name. Consequently, he wouldn't come when you called him as he had not connected with his actual name. The Power of the Niche On the Podcast Review Show (where you can get TWO consultants' insights for the price of one), Jason Sacco from the Ankylosing Spondylitis show shared how this podcast is attracting people who have this disease. This brings HUGE relief as many people have nobody to talk to who truly understands what it's like to have this pain-causing disease. Jaspon has a focused niche, but that doesn't stamp out all creativity. He has been trying some live roundtables and hopes to continue to grow his audience as he moves forward. While Jason would like to monetize his show, currently building the community and the lack of feeling alone is quite a bonus already. He has also been getting some press for his show. Carey Green Gets to 8600 Downloads Per Episode Carey Green hosts The Morning Mindset Daily Christian Devotional. When I hear about people with large amounts of downloads in just a few years (Carey is just under three years), I typically wonder if they had a large social following, email list, or built-in audience. In Carey's case, he had none of those. Here are some key points we covered in our interview: 20:10 Carey Green Getting 8600 Per Episode 21:43 Why Carey Started His Show 23:17 Daily Podcast Tips 24:34 Dealing With Haters 25:36 Polarizing People 25:59 Feedback From the Audience 26:58 Giving Your Audience What They Want 27:43 What Makes His Show Different 28:21 Starting a Premium Podcast 29:56 How is He Marketing His Show? 31:20 A Better Call To Action 32:05 Your Back Episodes in Stats 32:33 The One Different Thing 33:11 Teach Your Audience Your Slogan 35:43 Promoting the Show is Key 37:31 Carey Starts a Non-Profit 40:00 The Importance of Integrity What About Jordan Harbinger? Isn't His Show Filled With Random Guests? 40:54 If you listen to Jordan Harbinger's show opening, it sounds like he's just interviewing random interesting people. He mentions, "astronauts and entrepreneurs, spies in psychologists," which sounds like many random people. However, all those people are used to cover the topic of becoming a better critical thinker. You Can Have Predictable Randomness Both Carey and Jordan do something different on Friday. While this is a different format than other episodes, by doing it in a consistent, predictable fashion, the audience can adapt. Jordan has mentioned that his "Feedback Friday" episodes are top-rated, and Carey's longer Prayer episodes were built on his audience's requests. Getting Your Audience Subscribing and Returning For More When you deliver a message that the audience can identify with and say, oh, wow, that person really gets me, or I can use this information to transform myself and achieve that success. They're going to connect with you, and when they hear the call of a new episode, unlike my lovable little shi-Tzu Dudley, they are going to come running back to subscribe for more. The Launch of the Dog Podcast Network 12:15 I will be interviewing James Jacobson (a consulting client of mine) who is launching the Dog Podcast Network. Currently, James is running the 101 Dog Stories Contest. Submit your 5-15 minute segment to win a place in 101 Dog Stories, and you could win our grand prize of $5,000 USD. Some cancers come for dogs right away, and others take longer. Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) can be hard to diagnose, because it often develops while the dog acts totally healthy. But routine blood tests can tip a veterinarian off that something is wrong … and when you know early there are lots of things you can do to help your dog. Today James Jacobson takes a question about CLL, also known as Lymphoid Leukemia, from Delisa in Alabama, and asks Dr. Dressler for an answer. Dr. Demian Dressler is co-author of our podcast sponsor, the book The Dog Cancer Survival Guide: Full Spectrum Treatments to Optimize Your Dog’s Life Quality and Longevity. Quick Overview of CLL from James Jacobson’s conversation with Dr. Nancy Reese:First, let’s get clarity on this disease a little, because it’s often confused with a much more common dog cancer called lymphoma. To find out more, I asked one of our Full Spectrum veterinarians, Dr. Nancy Reese about Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia, also known as Chronic Lymphoid Leukemia, or CLL for short. I don’t have tape of our conversation about CLL, but you’ll hear from Dr. Nancy in an upcoming episode about Covid-19.By email, Dr. Nancy explained that lymphoma and lymphocytic leukemia are both cancers of the lymphocytes. What’s a lymphocyte? It’s a type of white blood cell that is born in the bone marrow, and less often, the spleen. Those white blood cells circulate in the blood stream and the lymph system, fighting infections in cells all over the body. So, when lymphocytes get cancer, you’ve got a systemic disease, which means the cancer is everywhere by definition. In lymphoma, the cancerous lymphocytes tend to collect in the lymph glands, which tend to get swollen. In lymphocytic leukemia, the cancerous lymphocytes tend to circulate in the bloodstream. Same cells, different locations in the body. Either way, the cancer cells, the lymphoid or lymphocytic cells, are everywhere ... so when you get this diagnosis, the veterinarian will almost always recommend chemotherapy. That's the only conventional treatment that circulates in the blood and goes everywhere in the body, right? So today’s question is this: when do you need to start the chemo for Lymphoid or Lymphocytic Leukemia? Right when you get the diagnosis? Or can you wait a while?Well, the answer depends on whether the lymphocytic leukemia is acute or chronic!Chronic conditions are long-developing, as opposed to severe and sudden, or acute conditions. Right? So Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia is a long-developing cancer of lymphocytes. Also, Dr. Nancy added, the lymphocytes involved in CLL are mature and divide slowly, at the same rate as a normal cell. So that’s one reason this form of the cancer takes a long time to develop. There is an acute form of lymphocytic leukemia, as well, that is much more immediately dangerous, and it develops in a immature form of the lymphocyte cells, a form that rapidly divides. So the Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia, or ALL, divides very fast, comes on suddenly, and rapidly progresses. We’ll hear more from Dr. Nancy directly in an upcoming episode about coronavirus and dogs that is literally a must-listen. She’s the perfect person to ask about the pandemic we’re in right now, because she is not only a veterinarian with thirty years of experience under her belt, she’s also got a Ph.D. in Epidemiology.About Today’s Guest, Dr. Demian Dressler: Dr. Demian Dressler, DVM is internationally recognized as “the dog cancer vet” because of his innovations in the field of dog cancer management. When it comes to dog cancer treatment cost is a big factor. But so are many other things. Dr. Dressler defends dog guardians who make choices for their dog’s best interest that other people disagree with. Should we be scared when we find a lump on our dog? James Jacobson finds out by asking Dr. Sue Ettinger, AKA Dr. Sue Cancer Vet.
