An in-depth look at ancient Greek practices for profound, lasting healing The modern practice of medicine and psychology grew out of the ancient Greek healing tradition, said to be founded by Asklepios, god of healing and dreams. For two thousand years the system spread all over the Mediterranean world and planted the roots of Western medicine and psychology by offering ritual and holistic practices that recognized that healing begins at the soul level. Yet, since that time, the spiritually based practices were cast aside, leaving behind only the scientific medical techniques that dominate health care today. Resurrecting and restoring the sacred, mythological, and cultural origins of medicine and psychotherapy, Edward Tick, Ph.D., explores the soul-healing practices missing in our contemporary health systems. He looks at the dream incubation tradition of Asklepios, sacred theater of Dionysos, oracle gifting of Apollo, special practices of warriors, and their roots in Neolithic shamanism and indigenous traditions. Demonstrating the ritual use of dreams, visions, oracles, synchronicities, and pilgrimage for healing and connecting to the transpersonal and divine, he explains how dream incubation is a technique in which you plant a seed for a specific healing or growth goal. Tick explores how we all can use ancient healing philosophies and practices to achieve holistic healing today. He examines the interaction between mind and body (psyche and soma) and between physical illness and the soul to heal PTSD and trauma. He explains the art of making accurate and holistic interpretations of signs, symbols, and symptoms to determine what they reveal about the soul. Showing how dreams and other transpersonal experiences are essential components of soul medicine, the author reveals how restoration of the soul facilitates true healing.

This week co-host Laura Payne swaps chair and becomes Dave's guest to discuss the fascinating ancient technique of dream incubation. They take a journey through the ancient worlds of Greece and Egypt to look at how the Asclepion dream temples which spread throughout the Mediterranean for hundreds of years became the prototype hospitals of today. As Laura says they were a mashup of modern-day hospital, come spa, come cinema complex. Laura looks at how the cult of the Greek healing God Asclepios grew in influence and how huge Asclepion centres such as Epidaurus on the Greek mainland became important sites of dream healing and entertainment centres with its famous amphitheatre, staging Greek dramas and music. They discuss Laura's research into the Asclepios method of dream incubation with its fascinating symbology of five key images such as snakes and dogs as signs of healing and the use of special womb-like caves called Abatons to conjure up and incubate healing dreams. We learn how Laura experiments with dreamers in workshops and dream retreats with stunning outcomes after they build their own abaton sanctuaries out of pop-up tents and then explore Greek myths whose archetypes contain potent energy that still impact us today. As Laura says this is about the power of ritual as preparation to incubate the creative imagination and the setting of intention before going to sleep. We look briefly at the mystery school work of Jean Houston and the writings of Edward Tick who have also explored the influence of these ancient sites. In Dream of the Week Laura and Dave look at a listener's snake dream. In the dream a white snake comes out of a photo and wraps itself around the woman's finger. Is it poisonous, the dreamer asks? What would an Asklepion dream guide, known as a psychotherapeute, make of this dream and how can this dream's message help the dreamer? Your dreams are fascinating, too. Today I'm talking to Matt Domyancic. Matt was a linebacker and competitive power lifter at the Air Force Academy and Colgate University and was a police officer in Connecticut and the Washington DC area. He was also a Division 1 strength coach at Yale and Georgetown and for the NFL Combine. In law enforcement, he worked patrol, SWAT, and as a full-time police academy instructor and helped with peer support.Today we start by talking about Matt's law enforcement career, a job he absolutely loved. But he was forced out and medically retired before he wanted to go. Just about everything that could go wrong did go wrong with his health, benefits and workman's comp, his medical expenses, etc. etc. But Matt fought hard to get back to a place physically, emotionally, and spiritually, where he could not only go on with his life, but he could go back to coaching others to be well. Matt volunteers as a chaplain in Los Angeles and helps officer and veterans by encouraging better overall wellness, life balance, mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual self-care before first responders experience a breakdown or a crisis.Resources: Matt's website: www.tacticalchaplain.comMatt's recommended read: Warrior's Return by Edward Tick https://www.amazon.com/dp/1622032004/Subscribe/Follow here:Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/hey-chaplain/id1570155168Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/2CGK9A3BmbFEUEnx3fYZOYMusic is by Chris Haugen from the YouTube Audio Library.Hey Chaplain Podcast Episode 018

Cheryl has been living in the desert since 1991, having grown up in St. Louis and literally dancing her way to New York City in the 1970's and eventually to Los Angeles and the Mojave. After the Sawtooth fire took her cabin near Rimrock Ranch, Cheryl wrote about her experience which eventually gave way to the creation of an always sold-out semi-annual fundraising event called 'Desert Stories', now in it's 11th year. In this episode, Cheryl talks about the inspiration behind Mil-Tree, a non-profit organization that brings veterans and civilians in the community together to experience healing and understand through art. These workshops include everything from making paper and then using that paper to hold the writings of participants, accompanied by spoken word to the creation of 'Sanctuary', an earth-bag construction project that included the construction of the structure as well as the creation of the metal works and ceramics adorning this place of reverence (go to Mil-Tree.org to see the video). Mil-Tree's upcoming workshop 'Moving the Memories', is close to Cheryl's heart, being a dancer. Mil-Tree partners with Diavolo Dance and Arts Connection of San Bernardino County to present a two-day movement workshop and presentation lead by Diavolo Architecture in Motion for veterans, active military and the community. (March 31 to April 1, 2018). Though initially devastating, Cheryl likens the tragic loss of her first desert home to that of a phoenix rising, which gave way to a transformation of her creativity. Mentioned in this episode: Cheryl's Website Mil-Tree Diavolo Dance The Lotus Eaters, by Tatjana Soli The Things They Carried, by Tim O'Brien War and the Soul, by Dr. Edward Tick

Caroline welcomes back Ed Tick, who has been working with returning vets since the Vietnam War, and now, from the even more horrific Iraqi invasion. His latest book, "War and the Soul, Healing Our Nation's Veterans from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder," is as crucial as Al Gore's recently released film on catastrophic climate change. Both are essential to put on our work table, and say now, from knowing all this, let's truly begin the conversation and the true heroic work before us. Ed has said that Homer's Ulysses is a manual for bringing vets home, requiring ten years of purification, story-telling, soul-recovery, maturation… This task belongs to all of us, and only in this way can we truly prevent war and engage in the true heroism of dynamic peace.
