Stories Behind the Songs with Chris Blair

In this week's episode of Stories Behind the Songs, I'm joined by Russell Sutton!   Russell talks about how he made the move from Texas to Nashville and carved a name for himself in the music industry. He's the writer behind some of your favorite hits, including “My Boy” by Elvie Shane – a song that was Russell's first #1 and landed him his first publishing deal. We dive into the journey that led to that breakthrough, and how his next chart-topping hit, “Whiskey on You” by Nate Smith, took things to the next level.   In this episode, you'll hear all about Russell's early days and how he became the writer he is today. He shares the story of how “My Boy” came to life, the excitement of seeing his songs hit the radio, and the surreal experience of seeing his song performed live on “The Tonight Show.” Russel also opens up about the challenges he's faced in the industry and offers some invaluable advice for aspiring songwriters. Plus, he talks about the new music he's working on and gives us a glimpse into what's next.   With wisdom from years of writing and building his career, Russell Sutton is a perfect example of how persistence, passion, friendships, and great songwriting can open doors in the industry. This episode is packed with insight, inspiration, and of course, some incredible performances of his biggest hits!   If you enjoyed this episode, be sure to share it with friends and follow along for more Stories Behind the Songs. A drummer? On a podcast about songwriting? What is this abomination?? Truth is, it's not an abomination at all! An aberration, maybe but a cool one. Or at least, I think it is. I hope you do too. No, the format of Write You a Song isn't changing. I simply had the opportunity to interview a professional Nashville drummer named Will Johnston, whom I got to know a bit last summer when the artist he tours with, Elvie Shane, did a small show for our radio station. Will and I were talking about the recording process, and we started thinking that some music fans might find it interesting to hear from someone who helps create the finished product that starts when a writer puts pen to paper (or, more likely these days, cursor to screen). Since it's not technically an episode about writing, I'm dropping it as a surprise, bonus episode. First one I've done but, if you like it, it may not be the last.  So if you've ever wondered about the musicians who play on the songs that become a part of a lives well, here's one of 'em. And I hope you enjoy :)See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Country music has a new superstar, and the man himself, Elvie Shane joins Dadcast to talk about being a new father and plays his #1 single "My Boy" for us, and you! This is an episode you do not want to miss! Elvie Shane's dad had a saying. One of those things that sticks with a person all through life – and especially in tough times. “Always forward, never straight,” he'd proclaim, knowing full well that a detour sometimes gets us where we're headed. Even as a kid, Shane knew it was good advice. He just had no idea how good. Nowadays, he's the man behind the most heartwarming country hit in recent memory – the lump-in-your-throat anthem to step-fatherhood, “My Boy” – and Shane knows what his dad meant. The road ahead is rarely a straight shot, and with Backslider, his full-length album debut on Wheelhouse Records, he gives that truth a soundtrack. “It's my biography pretty much,” Shane says, waving a flag for the perfect imperfection of our world. “I feel like Backslider is about being human, and I just want to say ‘Hey man, I screw up on a daily basis, and I can't help it – but I'm gonna get up tomorrow and try to be better than I was. Does anybody want to do that with me?'” A native of small-town Kentucky, that drive to make the world a little better comes naturally to Shane – and so does his high-energy sound. Raised in the Baptist church, some of his earliest (and fondest) memories come from singing hymns each week beside his Gospel-loving mother. She was the rock of the family, providing Shane with the drive and compassionate compass he now follows in his own music. But when they got home, it was his dad's boombox that stole Shane's attention, with the sound of classic rock and country helping pass the time. Early touchstones like Dwight Yoakam, Steve Earle and John Fogerty joined Shane's Gospel roots to form the bedrock of his taste – along with R&B classics like The Temptations and modern superstars like Eminem. And after a fateful Baptist revival came through town, he joined a band as a front man full of wild-eyed charisma. Soon they were rocking rowdy beer joints that suited his roughneck style, and at the same time, Shane began writing songs that were almost visual in their depth. But like so many others, he flew mostly under the radar … until “My Boy” first emerged. Initially capturing attention with a viral social media moment, that has since become his signature smash, the song is currently Top 5 at country radio, putting Shane's heart and soul on full display. Co-written with Russell Sutton, Lee Starr and Nick Columbia, it was born from tenderness and truth about the bond Shane shares with his stepson. Like his own dad predicted, that connection wasn't part of Shane's plan, but it delivered him right where he needed to be. And the song has done the same. “I think it set the bar for a lot of honesty and authenticity,” he explains. “I was actually a little leery of putting that song out first, just because I grew up singing in rock bands and I've always loved edgy music … and life has been pretty edgy for me at times. I wanted to put something out there that represents the bigger picture of who I am – and it turns out I did, I just didn't realize what it was.” Like “My Boy,” Shane co-wrote each of the 15 tracks on Backslider, painting a sonic “bigger picture” of not just himself, but life in small-town America – just as gritty as it is graceful. Each song speaks to Shane's life journey, revealing different chapters of his story with a sound as distinctive as its maker. The crunchy hooks of classic rock. The everyday poetry and nostalgia of country music. And the emotional electricity of Gospel and R&B – all with that punchy “edge” Shane knows so well. Feeling like a mix of The Black Crowes and John Mellencamp, the set was produced by Oscar Charles. And after “My Boy” set the truth-telling tone, the flood gates opened. “I Will Run” kicks the album off with an epic blast of classic rock optimism, working --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/dadcastco/support

The Secret To Luke Combs' Chart-Busting Success

The Country Music Media Podcast

Play Episode Play 33 sec Highlight Listen Later Oct 8, 2020 30:28

It's difficult to find Luke Combs' equal. Not now, not 10 years ago, not 30 years ago. Maybe not ever. The no-nonsense country singer and songwriter with a ‘90s country bent has released 9 singles to radio. Every one has reached No. 1. All but one has stayed there for multiple weeks. Since May of 2017 he's spent 26 weeks at the top of the country charts — that's a half year! — and I'm talking about the more illusive airplay chart, not the Hot Country Chart which is a mix of airplay, sales, streaming and witchcraft. A decade ago Florida Georgia Line went seven out of 8. In 1989 and '90 Clint black went five of seven. Garth Brooks? He batted closer to 500 for his first 10 singles. Is what we're experiencing real? Or is Luke Combs just a product of right time, right place? Is he what happens when the field narrows and country music radio shaves away all its rough edges? Is he a radio star who can't really get it done elsewhere or worse … is a poised for a big fall? My guest this week may know the answer. Chris Owen is a country chart expert who can recall just about every forgettable country song you throw at him, and the label, and how far it went on the Billboard or Mediabase country airplay chart. I like the way his mind works because he leans hard into stats and logic and not so much on emotion. Chris is an even hand in Twitter sea of screamers and criers and he's uniquely capable of find perspective as we watch Combs go No. 1 with the frequency of a 9-year-old who sucked down too many Coca Colas. Are we making too big a deal of what Luke Combs is quietly accomplishing? Is it fair to compare him to Garth or anyone? What is he doing that nobody else is? Let's find out, during Ep. No. 4 of the Country Music Media Podcast. Follow Chris Owen on Twitter. After the interview, it's "Pick-A-Hit."Chris' picks: Robert Counts, "What Do I Know"Larry Fleet, "Where I Find God"Runway June, "We Were Rich"Billy's PicksPriscilla Block, "Just About Over You"Cody Johnson, "Dear Rodeo"Elvie Shane, "My Boy"Finally, it's a postscript and this week's numbers.
