It's not as easy as it used to be.Nearly 100 Beer Stores have permanently shut down since the Ford government expanded alcohol sales to corner stores and grocery stores, and more are expected to close in the coming months.But here's the problem: although all grocery stores with a license to sell liquor will be required to accept empty bottles and cans as of Jan. 1, only a small percentage have actually started collecting.And as the deadline looms, some independent grocers are adamant they'd rather hand back their licenses than deal with such a health and safety hazard.“Where do you suggest in the store that customers bring these dirty bottles and cans?” said Gary Sands of the Canadian Federation of Independent Grocers, during a recent interview on our Closer Look podcast. “The stuff that comes crawling out of those cans and bottles should not be anywhere in a food environment. So where should it go? By the bakery section? The fruit and vegetables? Send us a textA big battle is brewing between the Ford government and some independent grocery store owners over who should be responsible for collecting people's empty booze bottles.By Jan. 1, 2026, all grocery stores licensed to sell beer and wine in Ontario must accept bottle returns as part of Premier Doug Ford's vision of speeding up the availability of alcohol.But a growing number of independent grocers are deciding to ditch booze sales altogether rather than deal with the mess and hassle of accepting people's empties. Difference Between Prayer and MeditationPrayer is generally understood as communicating with God. It's a two-way conversation, where you speak to God (through requests, thanks, confessions, adoration) and also listen for His response. Prayer is often outwardly focused, expressing thoughts, feelings, and desires to a divine being. It can be spontaneous, structured, vocal, or silent.Meditation, in a broader sense, is about focused attention and internal observation. While its specific practices vary widely across cultures and spiritual traditions, the common thread is to quiet the mind, increase awareness, and gain clarity. Some forms of meditation aim to empty the mind, while others focus on a particular thought, image, or sensation.Advice - Does the Christian Faith Support Meditation or Should We Stick with Prayer Only?The Christian faith absolutely supports a form of meditation, but it's distinct from many secular or Eastern meditative practices. Christians are encouraged to engage in "Christian meditation" which is fundamentally different from practices that aim to empty the mind or detach from the self.Here's how Christian meditation differs and why it's supported:Filling the Mind, Not Emptying It: Unlike some Eastern meditation forms that aim to empty the mind, Christian meditation is about filling the mind with thoughts of God, His Word (the Bible), and His character. It involves deep reflection, contemplation, and rumination on biblical passages, God's attributes, and His works.The saying "If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything" means that if you lack core principles or values, you're more susceptible to believing or accepting anything that comes your way. The question might be, “What are you going to fill your mind with?” This is when we must be intentional with our meditation. Simply emptying ourselves only creates a void to be filled with something else. The world will have no problem giving you things to put in that void. You must choose to put the good and God in that emptiness. Focus on God, Not Self: The purpose of Christian meditation is to deepen one's relationship with God, to understand His will, and to be transformed into Christ's likeness. It's not primarily for self-improvement or personal serenity in isolation from God, though these can be beneficial byproducts.Biblical Basis: The Bible itself encourages meditation. Numerous Psalms speak of meditating on God's law day and night (e.g., Psalm 1:2, Psalm 119:15, 77:12). Philippians 4:8 exhorts believers to "meditate on these things" – referring to whatever is true, noble, just, pure, lovely, commendable, excellent, or praiseworthy.Philippians 4:8 Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.Integration with Prayer: Christian meditation often complements prayer. Through meditation on Scripture, one gains understanding and insight that can inform and enrich their prayers. When Doug Ford and the Ontario government announced that they were expanding alcohol sales to grocery and convenience stores it was seen as a positive move to break up a government monopoly, but The Beer Store still has one important piece of that monopoly: returns. It was an effective example of what we now call the circular economy, but in making alcohol more available, has it cost us the most successful recycling program we've ever had? Next time you buy beer or wine at the grocery store or the quick stop, look at your receipt: You're still paying the 10 or 20 cent deposit on every can and bottle. If you take your empties back to The Beer Store, you can get that money back, but it's becoming more convenient to get rid of your empties by dumping them out in the recycling. That undermines what's been an incredibly successful recycling program through The Beer Store, which, at its peak saw an 80 per cent return rate. Large grocery stores that sell alcohol and are more than five kilometres from a Beer Store are supposed to be accepting returns but the words “supposed to” are doing a lot of work because, as you'll hear, this is being treated as more of a suggestion than a rule. In their own investigation, Environmental Defence only found one grocery store in Ontario meeting this criteria that is actively accepting empties, and this is only going to get worse as more Beer Store locations close. One the people raising the alarm on this is Karen Wirsig, who is the plastics program manager of Environmental Defence. She joins us this week to talk about why The Beer Store's recycling program has been so successful, and why maintaining it has been such an afterthought for the government. We will also talk about why grocery retailers are fighting the effort to expand the return program to their stores, the coming danger in 2026 with Beer Store closures, and what you can do to keep getting your deposit back.
