For many women “putting yourself first” does not come naturally. In fact, many women have been socialized to believe that putting themselves first is a selfish act, so they put everyone's needs before they own, always talking about their dreams and desires in the future saying thighs like, “When the kids get older:” “When I get that promotion that I‘ve been working so hard for.” “When I have the time.” “That's when I will travel, or follow my passion, or start that nonprofit organization.” The irony is that oftentimes, a life-altering medical diagnosis, like cancer, is often the catalyst that can throw them headlong into living the lives they had been planning for, as they face their own mortality. In this episode Iselyn Hamilton Austin shares how her breast cancer diagnosis taught her to make herself not just “a” priority, but “the” priority! Iselyn describes her cancer diagnosis as “...like joining a sorority you never asked to be in.” You'll want to hear how breast cancer became the catalyst for her work not only in the nonprofit space, but her work with other women who received similar diagnoses. According to Iselyn, she became the go-to person for these women, teaching them how to not just “survive” with cancer, but to “thrive”. Take a listen to this heart-warming story of not just someone who survived breast cancer but who is thriving, and exploring other avenues of creative expression. In fact, Iselyn is now the author of two children's books. If you've been inspired and encouraged by the positive messages of this show, please take a moment to rate and review the show on Apple podcast. In this episode, Dr. Peggie Kirkland (PK) delves into the impact that negative self-talk has on women. According to PK, your internal dialogue frames the narrative messages that you tell yourselves over and over. This narrative has the ability to change your mood and more significantly, can lead to depression and anxiety; the more you do it, the more it becomes embedded in your subconscious until it becomes a habit. It is therefore important to start reversing that process by doing things like thought-stopping, blocking out time for self-care, filling your tribe with positive people and more. Part of a larger Divine plan is how you sometimes come to view your life, If you've lived long enough. You also realize that life sometimes takes us on unpredictable journeys, that may initially make our heads spin, but once we get over the initial shock of the experience, and we take some time to reflect, we may realize that things that happen are not just coincidences. That was the experience of Rochel Marie Lawson in her journey to what she calls blissful living. In this episode, Rochel Marie, takes us on a journey starting with her graduation from college with a degree in Electrical Engineering, a rarity for a woman in the 80s she said. She takes us through the challenges she encountered as a female in a male-dominated field how she dealt with them. She shares the story of how her failure to find employment despite many praises about her qualifications, and promises for work caused her to make a decision to start a telecommunications installation company with her husband. That was one challenge that Rochel Marie overcame, but that was not all. Rochel also overcame a health condition that had gone undiagnosed for more than 17 years. She did this by taking stock of her health, listening to her body and learning about and practicing Ayurveda. For anyone who is not aware, affirmations are a tool for shifting your thoughts from focusing on what you're lacking, to a focus on your strengths. Since we all have positive and negative internal dialogues running through our minds each day, those thoughts are shaping our reality with their scripts. When the script is positive, we feel upbeat, confident and sure of ourselves. However, when those scripts are negative, they can feed our self-doubt and can discourage us from trying to reach our goals. Having said that, you should have an arsenal of affirmations that you can use to boost your confidence when you're feeling uncertain, and reset your brain from negative to positive. It's sort of like a golfer who has a variety of clubs in her golf bag, depending on whether she is teeing off, getting airborne shots, or rolling the ball into a hole. Whatever the shot, she has the right club.To be clear though, affirmations are not intended to be the solution for mental health concerns, including things like depression and anxiety. Those concerns require professional help. Take a listen to this episode to learn how you can start to use affirmations to impact your life, as you rewire your brain to support you in positive ways.If you loved this episode, why not leave a review and a rating here and be sure to share it with someone who can benefit from this motivational message. Part of a larger Divine plan is how you sometimes come to view your life, If you've lived log enough. You also realize that life sometimes takes us on unpredictable journeys, that may initially make our heads spin, but once we get over the initial shock of the experience, and we take some time to reflect, we may realize that things that happen are not just coincidences. This was one of many experiences that caused Rochel Marie to make a decision to start a telecommunications installation company with her husband. That was one challenge that Rochel Marie overcame, but that was not all. Rochel also overcame a health condition that had gone undiagnosed for more than 17 years. Let's be honest. Getting a divorce can take a toll on your mental, physical, emotional and spiritual health leaving you feeling broken and burnt out. The good news is that you can rebound from a life challenge such as this and start thriving again. In today's episode of Momma's Motivational Messages, I interview Kelly Foster to discuss her road back to finding herself and living in her purpose. One, of many, important points that Kelly makes is about the importance of looking inside yourself, first, when you're on the path to healing and rebuilding. Kelly is a writer, speaker, advocate, author of “Dear Proverbs 31 Woman...Stop Making Me Look Bad!” and founder of the online women's ministry, Imperfectly His. Through her ministry, Kelly has helped hundreds of women embrace their imperfect stories to become healthy, healed and whole, while pursuing their passions with purpose. Kelly's life's motto is "Challenges are meant to propel your personal growth and empower your spiritual calling." Of the many golden nuggets Kelly shares with us in this episode, is her belief in the need to embrace your challenges, build strength from faith, and understand that any problem is only temporary. She is passionate about inspiring women to reclaim their most painful struggles instead of hiding them in shame. Let's jump right into the episode to learn more as Kelly shares her inspiring story about breaking out of the complicated personal challenges that she faced as she ended her marriage and the ministry they had built together over time, and the lessons she learned from that adversity. If you've been inspired and encouraged by the positive messages thus far, please take a moment to rate and review the show on Apple podcast. Learn to put yourself first is our message to ladies over 40. This is not an easy habit to form when you've been used to prioritizing everyone else's needs above your own, but it is something you can learn to do. It is crucial for women to internalize the fact that focusing on themselves is the most unselfish act they can perform because everyone around them benefits when they are healthy in mind, body, spirit, professionally and financially. In Season Two listeners will hear from guests who, through a variety of challenges, learned to stop putting their needs on the back burner. I know you'll be inspired by their stories of resiliency and starting over, of health and self-healing, of gaining clarity through journaling, of showing self-love through world travel, and the list goes on.If you've been inspired and encouraged by the positive messages thus far, please take a moment to rate and review the show on Apple podcast. Last week we focused on health and well being. This week the focus is on self-care, self-esteem and self confidence. Peter Willis, a best selling author and International training coach from the UK says that self care is "...intrinsically linked to your self-esteem and self- confidence,." That really resonated with me. He said, “... people with high self-esteem and self-confidence value themselves as much as others and recognize that unless they take care of themselves, they'll diminish the contribution they make to others. It's like the often quoted airline analogy about putting on your own mask first, before attempting to assist anyone else. With that in mind, today's affirmation is:When I take better care of myself, I can take better care of othersTo truly take care of yourself, you have to love yourself fully. You have to accept yourself as you are and honor your physical, mental and spiritual needs. It means being attentive to your diet and exercise routines, as well as the number of hours of sleep you get. It's about making choices that align with your values so that you can protect your self esteem and grow your confidence, which is what happens when you take care of yourself.
This week's focus has been on health and well-being. It is Day 15 in our Season of Affirmations. and today's affirmation is "My ability to forgive others frees me to lead a more fulfilling life ."When someone wrongs you and you hold on to negative feelings in your hart, guess whose life is being damaged? Your own!Psychology experts say that holding grudges can significantly impact your mental and physical health. It's like that often quoted statement that says, being reluctant to forgive someone is like "drinking poison and expecting the other person to get sick or die." As difficult as it may be, it's really important to choose forgiveness before the hurt you feel turns to bitterness and resentment. Even when you would be justified in getting even, the better path is to choose love over vindication. As former First Lady, Michelle Obama ,once famously said, “When they go low, we go high.” If we care enough about others, we can, with practice, learn to overlook unintentional hurts and abrasive responses, from family, friends and strangers. Instead we can learn to be empathetic, and to treat others the way we want to be treated. For today's journal entry…Is there someone you need to forgive? Can you find it in your heart to do so?Can you reach out to that individual by text, or email or phone to let them know that you're letting it go… and letting it be… whatever “it” may be.What a liberating experience that will be for you
This week's focus is health and well-being. It is Day 14 in our Season of Affirmations. and today's affirmation is "I Forgive Myself For All Past Mistakes."Whether you believe it or not, forgiveness can play an important role in your mental and physical health. Think about the guilt and shame you feel when you know that you've done something that is out of character. Those feelings can lead to anxiety and depression, and some psychology experts even say you can risk increasing your blood pressure and your cholesterol levels. The key to controlling these negative outcomes is to start practicing self-forgiveness. Check out the episode titled "3 Ways To Start Forgiving Yourself And Improve Your Health" to get some strategies. Just remember that even though we are all imperfect people, being imperfect does not make us any less amazing!
