Have you enjoyed splashy fall colors this season? People who are colorblind miss out on some of that autumn bliss. EnChroma glasses allow those with ‘color vision deficiency' see a fuller spectrum. We ask Don McPherson, inventor of the glasses, how they work -- and learn about a new test for color blindness. You can find the test here. EnChroma Glasses are available on loan at Brookside Gardens in Montgomery County. More information here.Do you have a question or comment about a show or a story idea to pitch? Don McPherson invented eyewear for color blindness when he was working to develop eyewear for surgeons to use as protection during laser surgery. He would discover this when he lent his glasses to a friend who was color blind during a round of Ultimate Frisbee in Santa Cruz. In 2005 EnChroma was born. In this episode Don talks about the overlap of art + science, the importance of getting a multidisciplinary degree and overcoming pushback he got from the vision science community.

Tod is the New York Times bestselling author of over a dozen books, including the novel Gangsterland, which is currently being developed into a television series. This episode answers questions related to color blindness, diabetes-related vision loss, uveitis, dry and wet macular degeneration, Irwin Gass Syndrome, eye inflammation, eye drops for dry eyes, and eye drops for glaucoma. Question 1 1:00 - 4:51 In all the newsletters I've read from you, I've never seen color blindness addressed. Would you please do something about that condition? My stepson just tried the Enchroma glasses to see if they could help his color blindness at all, which they didn't. Not being able to determine color has affected what jobs he can undertake. Thanks so much! Question 2 4:51 - 11:30 My husband has diabetes he has lost vision in one eye. His other eye macula is swelling now has a cataract in his eye the one that is swelling. What product do you think will help his eyes? Question 3 11:30 - 19:31 Is there anything you can do for Uveitis? My daughter has the one that is in the back of the eye. She has it in both eyes but one is affected more than the other. Question 4 19:31 - 26:53 My left eye has gone from dry macular degeneration to wet, I am taking all related supplements, + Acupuncture have had my 1st eye injection. Do you have any additional thoughts or suggestions? Thanks. Question 5 26:55 - 33:23 Tell me more about treatment for Irwin Gass Syndrome. I had cataract surgery on right eye May 22 and left eye on June 5. My eye surgeon and my retinal specialist tells me this is self-limiting and will go away. They both recommend a NSAID eye drop three times a day and a steroid eye drop twice a day. The retinal specialist says it is difficult for the drops to penetrate to back of eye and the surface of retina. He suggested low dose NSAID tablet daily. I take warfarin tablet daily for atrial fib. so, I would prefer not to use NSAID tablets. I am a retired pharmacist and believe in functional medicine and nutrient therapy. I use your MSM eye drops 15% twice a day, and take an eye vitamin with a formula like yours. I am thinking about Glutathione liposomal oral therapy to aid in healing. I have used the Carnosine drops prior to my eye surgeries for two years. I have some left but stop using after the surgery. I follow the post cataract eye exercises and sunning exercises daily. Thanks for your suggestions. Question 6 33:25 - 38:25 I have Graves' disease, since 08/2017, and thyroid eye disease (TED) since 02/2018. I've had double vision which has greatly improved and little to no eye pain, I do have inflammation / puffiness under both eyes which fluctuates from day to day; and that puffiness is softer / not as firm now. For the TED I was on a 12-week round of prednisone, 500 mg for 6 weeks and 250 mg for 6 weeks; and just completed a 16-day taper of 10 mg prednisone. That surgeon wants me to get radiation therapy and / or bone removal surgery from behind my eyes; neither of which I'm interested in. What eye drops and / or supplements would you suggest? Thank you. Question 7 38:25 - 42:50 I am on restasis for dry eyes, can I use the MSM drops also? Thank you. Question 8 42:50 - 44:00 Are there alternatives to the prescription drops I am using for glaucoma?

More than 300 million people across the globe don’t see the world with what is considered normal color vision. Today we meet glass scientist Dr. Donald McPherson, who accidentally discovered he could help those people. He’s the mind behind Enchroma glasses, designed to unlock color vision for those with color-deficient sight. We also capture the moment when local illustrator and art educator Jonathon Scott Fuqua tries the glasses for the first time. It changed the way he was used to seeing the world. Original air date: Oct 12, 2017.
Enchroma's web site says their glasses, “ . . . open up a world of color for people with color blindness. Our products provide vibrant, accurate color . . .” Seems straightforward enough, until you discuss the lenses with doctors. On one side are doctors who say, “Patients report they see better, and that's what matters” and on the other, “If they can't see any extra Ishihara plates, what's the point?” Listen to this episode of the Power Hour when Enchroma supporters, optician Barry Santini and Dr. Justin Bazan explain why they prescribe the lenses – and listen to callers and others who explain why they don't. Then, you decide if Enchroma is right for your practice!
On this week’s show, Pat checks into some of the more prevalent conspiracy theories related to the recent mass shooting in Las Vegas. Imagine being able to see color for the first time- ALL the feels! We have a beautiful video of color-blind folks putting on the new glasses from Enchroma and seeing the red of a flower...the color of their child's eyes...ah! Still crying. Also, the dumbest conspiracy theories ever: the Beatles and their eyebrows? Satanic messages on "Saved By The Bell?" The moon is really a hologram? Yeah, they're all out there. Have you ever seen the wildly exotic vehicles they rave on the Salt Flats? Freaking. Amazing. Have a listen...
