Ben Sauer shares why designers need to be better presenters, how to keep stakeholders awake and engaged, and what to do when disaster inevitably strikes. Highlights include: Is how design is presented more important than the design itself? How do you help stakeholders to relate more powerfully to design work? What is the Goldilocks Zone and how can designer's find it quickly? Why can it be useful to show stakeholders design work bit-by-bit? How do you deal with difficult people when presenting design work? ====== Who is Ben Sauer? Ben is an independent product and design strategist, coach, and trainer, helping companies to craft the vision for their products, and to inspire better internal processes and practices. Drawing on over 20 years of experience, he has written and spoken about strategic storytelling, voice UI design, and how slowing down can help organisations to speed up. And his insights have been put to use at organisations such as NASA, Amazon and the BBC. Ben's most recent mission is helping designers to become more influential by becoming more confident communicators of their work. That's why he's recently published a book called “Death by Screens”, a practical how-to guide for presenting high stakes design work. Before becoming an independent consultant, Ben worked at Babylon Health, where he was first a Director of Design and then a Director of Product. There, he led a large team of over 100 designers, clinicians, data scientists and engineers. He has also been a Senior UX Designer at Clearleft, the world-renowned and perhaps first UX design consultancy in the United Kingdom. ====== Find Ben here: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/bensauer/ Website: https://bensauer.net/ X: https://twitter.com/bensauer Death By Screens: How to Present High-Stakes Digital Design Work and Live to Tell the Tale - https://bensauer.net/deathbyscreens/ ====== Liked what you heard and want to hear more? Kevin Tufts is the real deal when it comes to tech and design. With over two decades of experience working across a number of companies in the Bay Area — Lyft, SendGrid, and Twilio, to name a few — he's now a product designer at Meta working on their Creation team. So believe me, we had a LOT to talk about. Our conversation begin with a look at the current climate inside Meta (pre-Threads, FYI), and he gave some thoughts on where the company is going as it approaches its 20th anniversary. From there, Kevin talked about his path to becoming a product designer, and we took a trip down memory lane recalling the early days of web design and what it was like working during such rapidly changing times. He also spoke on what he loves about product design now, and how he wants to help the next generation of designers through mentorship.Kevin's secrets to success are simple: seize opportunities for growth where you can, embrace collaboration, and remain flexible. Today, I'm talking to JC Solis.-JC currently works at Epic Games as a Senior UX Designer. Before Epic Games, he worked at Roblox as a Senior UX Designer and at Unity before that.-I first chatted with JC when I interned at Roblox last summer. At the time, I remember how awesome his end-to-end material manager project was, so I wanted to chat with him. And we did it on one of my last days of the internship. And fast forward a few months, we ended up recording this episode after the internship! In this chat, we talked about various topics such as game vs product UX, the importance of visual design, and more. But, what I really, really appreciated was JC's vulnerability towards the end when I asked him what advice he would give to his younger self. I would highly recommend listening to the very end of this conversation. So, without further ado, here was my conversation with JC Solis.===Highlights⭐ Why JC studied game design in college⭐ Game UX vs product UX⭐ Work at Unity, Roblox, and now Epic Games⭐ Tips for great storytelling⭐ Importance of visual design===Links

Jake is a smart, talented, thoughtful, and hilarious UX Designer. We had a ton of fun talking about his career, the core of UX, his “three C's” for being a good UX designer, and even some great ways he's coping with this prolonged work-from-home life we find ourselves in. I love the way that Jake approaches UX; that it really boils down to solving problems by talking to people. I've had the opportunity to work on a big UCD project with Jake and I can vouch for his authentic pursuit of solving problems. I look forward to the opportunity to work with him again. It's no secret that my feelings towards recruiters are… rough at best. Corporate recruiters have never done me any favors other than escorting me to an interview, which in truth, I could have done on my own. Agency recruiters are another ball of fun. They tend to be a sizable percentage of my LinkedIn connection requests, followed by a surface level conversation where I'm treated like a commodity. Then this episode happened. I can't say “it's all changed” but understanding is definitely improved. My guest today is Joe Taft, and talented UX Designer with over 5 years of industry experience. Currently, he's a Senior UX Designer with USAA, but in a past life… he was a recruiter. In this episode, Joe talks about the role of recruiters from both an agency and corporate perspective. We talk about how we can sift through the bad recruiters to find the good ones, the ones that will have your back, and actually help you land a position in the industry. My hope is that after this episode, if you're between jobs, or looking to get your foot in the door, you'll know how you can benefit from a relationship with a UX recruiter.
