What's up, dudes? Remember when Sears, JC Penney, and Montgomery Wards would print wish books? Chad Young from Horror Movie BBQ and Michael May from After Lunch do, and they're  with me  to look through the 1985 Sears Wish Book! From clothes to jewelry to toys, it had every gift idea you could possibly want! The book starts off with a nice little poem, spread out every fourth page. What follows immediately are pages of value gifts, including an actual suit of armor. Then there are red pages of gifts under $100. Merry Christmas indeed! Next comes women's fashions followed by jewelry and girls attire. Of course, boys clothes, shoes, men's wear, and accessories come next. After the Christmas decorations are a wide variety of appliances, clocks, dish ware, and sports gear. The best part of the entire publication follows: toys!  After the Super Powers line, GoBots, Transformers, and Voltron are highlighted! The relatively new Sectaurs line gets a whole page, and both GI Joe and He-Man get double spreads! Return of the Jedi gets a page, and M.A.S.K. Shares a page with Wheeled Warriors!Subsequently, Barbies, stuffies, TVs, and cameras get entire sections devoted to them.Dual cassette decks? Check. Oversized fleece terry pullovers? Got ‘em. Masters of the Universe soft and snuggly slippers? Definitely! So grab your Omagles, pick up your pool cue, and scour through this episode on the 1985 Sears Wish Book!Horror Movie BBQFB: @HorrorMovieBBQTwitter: @HorrorMovieBBQIG: @horrormoviebbqAfter LunchGive us a buzz! Show Notes Episode 474: Santa Went to Sears This week Host Dave Bledsoe was ejected from Macy's after getting drunk and trying to climb on Santa's lap. (He also tried to kiss him under the beard.) On the show this week we celebrate the True Meaning of Christmas™: The annual Sears Wishbook Catalog. Along the way we learn that Dave was playing with dolls well into puberty. (It would be slightly less sad if they were sex dolls, but they weren't). Then we learn a brief history of commerce in human history before he finally gets around to talking about Sears. We learn how the Wishbook went from a Depression era supplement to the annual announcement of the Christmas Season for an entire Generation. (This is one thing that belongs to Generation X entirely.  Boomers got pensions, we got a discontinued catalog.) Dave explains the math behind toy acquisition before the Internet before detailing why the Wishbook is no more. (It is more Walmart than Amazon.) Finally, we close with the cultural impact of the Wishbook and a frankly unnecessary digression into how the catalog framed the sexual awakening of Gen X boys. (We're so sorry.) Our Returning Sponsor this week is the USS Flagg, the toy that made you realize you were poor.  We open the show with a Sears commercial from 1985 and close Zoot Fenster who has some questions about the items in the catalog. Long, long ago in what seems like a galaxy far away, there was no Cyber Monday. There was barely even a Black Friday. We shopped in stores, not on the yet-to-be-imagined internet.  And for the children who were dreaming of holiday presents, there was the Sears catalog, the “Wish Book” edition. If you are an American of a certain age, you are nodding your head right now, but if you have no idea what I'm talking about, I'll explain. Sears is a department store chain that was founded in 1892. It was in the beginning exclusively a mail order business, and the Sears catalog was an important resource for shoppers all over the country, but particularly in rural areas that had limited access to stores. But, the special “Wish Book” edition, first printed in 1933 and released every year at holiday time, was the ultimate catalog shopping experience. It ceased publication in 1993, but at its peak, the catalog had over 600 pages with more than 100 pages devoted to toys. My brother and I waited for that catalog every year and boy, did we wish our way through the pages! There's no more Wish Book, but there also seems no end to our burgeoning consumerism. I have no desire to add to the frenzy but I did want to offer some ideas for harp-related gifts that you may enjoy giving to a harpist friend or putting on your own wish list. The twist to this list is that everything on it I have chosen because it will make a harpist's life easier. Some of the items are recommendations for things you can purchase, but there are some that aren't things you could buy for any amount of money. It's about increasing harp happiness, not decreasing your wallet. So grab a cup of tea and take a break with me, a rest from the holiday shopping rush. We'll talk about the little things, a few bigger things and the less tangible things that every harpist could use at the holidays or any time of year. By the way, I've included a link in the show notes to a list of everything I'm mentioning on today's podcast. This is purely informational; I'm not making a commission or earning any money from any of the things on this list. You don't even have to enter your email to get the list. All you have to do is click the link. But if you'd like to show the podcast a little love, I'd be so grateful. Just share this episode or any of the episodes you may have found helpful with a friend. You'll be sharing valuable information to help your harp friend, and you'll be helping me to help more harpists. That's a win for everyone and it doesn't cost a thing! Writer, editor, producer and actor Jason Liebig joins Tim to talk about the Sears Wishbook. Jason is the creator of a website called WishbookWeb.com, which has archived complete, high-quality scans of Sears Wishbooks and other holiday catalogues going back to 1933. In this episode, we talk about a holiday tradition sure to bring a smile to your face.  This episode was first released on December 10, 2018. https://traffic.libsyn.com/secure/shapingopinion/Encore_-_Sears_Wish_Book.mp3 The very first Sears Wish Book was published in 1933. It featured dolls, a Mickey Mouse Watch, Lionel electric trains, fruitcakes, chocolates and even live, singing canaries. The store catalogue was 87 pages long, and featured 25 pages of toys for kids and 62 pages of gifts for adults. The Sears Wish Book grew over the decades, so that by 1968, it totaled 605 pages.  And in 1998, it went online with Wishbook.com This year, Sears will not publish a Wish Book, but that is not stopping many from revisiting their childhoods through a website called WishbookWeb.com. Jason Liebig is the man behind it. Sears Wish Book History The first Sears Wish Book came out in 1933. Prior to that, in 1896 the Sears general catalogue included wax candles for Christmas trees. But 1933 was the first year Sears devoted a full catalogue to Christmas. The term Wish Book was an informal name. The real name was Sears Christmas Book Catalogue. The company made it a tradition to put colorful, warm Christmas scenes on the cover. The company published the book annually from 1933 until 1993. The Chicago Tribune once described The Wish Book as, “so central to holiday expectations it read like a catalog of middle-class American Aspiration … To flip through one today is to see what we thought our homes and holidays should look like.” The Wish Book was delivered early. It would usually appear in mailboxes during the late summer right when the school year started. Links WishbookWeb.com CollectingCandy.com The Sears Christmas Wishbook, A Holiday Tradition, Sears Unsung: The Sears Wish Book, a Ghost of Christmas Past, The Chicago Tribune Sears' Wish Book Shown Through the Years, Business Insider About Wishbook Web WishbookWeb.com first launched in 2006, with the initial scanning project having started a year earlier in 2005. From the outset, the goal of the WishbookWeb project has been to archive, preserve, and share the wonderful holiday gift catalogs of the past – making them freely-available to anyone with a web browser. Inspired by the pioneering work of websites like Plaidstallions and MegoMuseum, who had already been sharing select pages of vintage catalogs online, our goal was to build upon that idea by sharing entire volumes, every section and every page. As you see it now, WishbookWeb represents the product of hundreds of hours of work to create the current archive. About this Episode's Guest Jason Liebig Jason Liebig is a New York City based writer, editor, producer, actor and host. After spending much of his early career in the comic book business, most notably as an editor for Marvel Comics' X-Men, he has since split his time between developing his own properties while still consulting and working on others. In addition to his work with WishbookWeb, Jason is one of the country's premier candy collectors and historians with his discoveries appearing in countless blogs, magazines, newspaper articles, and books. He operates a web site called CollectingCandy.com. Always happy to share his knowledge and unique perspectives on this colorful part of our popular culture, Jason has consulted for The Smithsonian, The Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, and New York's Museum of Food and Drink and more. His knowledge of vintage brands and packaging (as well as his singular archive of vintage packaging materials) has allowed him to serve as art department consultant on such period television productions as AMC's Mad Men and...

“The Sears Christmas Wish Book was, for me, a kind of foundational text — a secular counterpoint to the Bible stories I learned around that time in Sunday School. I paged through the holiday catalog's 620 glossy pages as if they amounted to an intoxicating graphic novel of desire, rich with abundance and possibility.” – Rolf Potts, from “Literature of Desire” In this episode Rolf reads an audio version of his Christmas-themed essay “Literature of Desire,” and discusses the wonders of the Sears Christmas Wish Book with novelist Tod Goldberg (@todgoldberg). Tod is the New York Times bestselling author of over a dozen books, including the novel Gangsterland, which is currently being developed into a television series. Disc Cameras were introduced by Kodak in 1982.  They were innovators, and I liken them to the Apple of the day (Yes I am aware that Apple was around back then, but they weren't the innovators then that Kodak was)  So why did the photos not have the quality that would have made the amazing little disc camera work??

Writer, editor, producer and actor Jason Liebig joins Tim to talk about the Sears Wishbook. Jason is the creator of a website called WishbookWeb.com, which has archived complete, high-quality scans of Sears Wishbooks and other holiday catalogues going back to 1933. In this episode, we talk about a holiday tradition sure to bring a smile to your face. https://traffic.libsyn.com/shapingopinion/The_Sears_Wishbook_auphonic.mp3 The very first Sears Wish Book was published in 1933. After spending much of his early career in the comic book business, most notably as an editor for Marvel Comics’ X-Men, he has since split his time between developing his own properties while still consulting and working on others. In addition to his work with WishbookWeb, Jason is one of the country’s premier candy collectors and historians with his discoveries appearing in countless blogs, magazines, newspaper articles, and books. He operates a web site called CollectingCandy.com. Always happy to share his knowledge and unique perspectives on this colorful part of our popular culture, Jason has consulted for The Smithsonian, The Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, and New York’s Museum of Food and Drink and more. His knowledge of vintage brands and packaging (as well as his singular archive of vintage packaging materials) has allowed him to serve as art department consultant on such period television productions as AMC’s Mad Men and The Goldbergs on ABC as well as feature films like Stephen...
