What's up, dudes? Remember when Sears, JC Penney, and Montgomery Wards would print wish books? Chad Young from Horror Movie BBQ and Michael May from After Lunch do, and they're with me to look through the 1985 Sears Wish Book! From clothes to jewelry to toys, it had every gift idea you could possibly want! The book starts off with a nice little poem, spread out every fourth page. What follows immediately are pages of value gifts, including an actual suit of armor. Then there are red pages of gifts under $100. Merry Christmas indeed! Next comes women's fashions followed by jewelry and girls attire. Of course, boys clothes, shoes, men's wear, and accessories come next. After the Christmas decorations are a wide variety of appliances, clocks, dish ware, and sports gear. The best part of the entire publication follows: toys! After the Super Powers line, GoBots, Transformers, and Voltron are highlighted! The relatively new Sectaurs line gets a whole page, and both GI Joe and He-Man get double spreads! Return of the Jedi gets a page, and M.A.S.K. Shares a page with Wheeled Warriors!Subsequently, Barbies, stuffies, TVs, and cameras get entire sections devoted to them.Dual cassette decks? Check. Oversized fleece terry pullovers? Got ‘em. Masters of the Universe soft and snuggly slippers? Definitely! So grab your Omagles, pick up your pool cue, and scour through this episode on the 1985 Sears Wish Book!Horror Movie BBQFB: @HorrorMovieBBQTwitter: @HorrorMovieBBQIG: @horrormoviebbqAfter LunchGive us a buzz! I loved toys. The Sears “Wish Book” catalog was my bible for what I wanted for Christmas. I had and wanted a LOT of cool toys in my childhood.(my mother nicknamed me “Leonard “I Want” Riggs”) I tried to remember a lot of them that I had or wanted.
On this very special episode of the Smugglers' Galaxy Podcast, we play one of the panels from Rogue Fun: Santa Shopped There: Star Wars and the Golden Age of the Sears Wish Book by Jerry Hancock (Ki-Adi Randy). This panel examines the history of the Sears Wish Book and how it helped expand the hottest toy line in the galaxy. Following the success of the Star Wars Early Bird campaign, Kenner continued to use the power of mail order as a means to market exclusives and preview new releases during the holiday season. Jerry Hancock is a Georgia-based Star Wars collector, educator and historian. His collection focuses on Star Wars exclusives offered through the Sears catalog. He is the author of “Ponce City Market: The Rise, Fall, and Rebirth of Atlanta's Largest Building,” which originally served as the Sears Southeast Catalog Distribution Center and Retail Store in Atlanta. While researching his master's thesis on Sears and its cultural impact on the American South, he conducted interviews with dozens of former Sears employees and executives. As an added bonus, Jerry joins us at the start and conclusion of the panel to provide what it was like to present this at Rogue Fun! --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/smugglersgalaxy/message

The holiday season always reminds me of a catalog that we used to get in the mail. No, it's not the Sears Wish Book or the J.C. Penney Christmas Book. The holidays always remind me of the Fingerhut catalog. The company still exists online but stopped mailing the catalog many years ago. We always looked through the catalog to find gifts for my mother and father. My dad still displays a Christmas gift we bought from Fingerhut in the early 1970s. And I'm not alone. My wife's family used to buy from them too... You may have thought that 8-track faded away in the 70s along with disco and bell bottoms. But in actuality, 8-track continued into the 80s—and well into the 80s, lasting much longer than many people realize. This is the story of the final days of 8-track, the music format that was able to hang in there because of cars, toys, and a certain record and tape club. Cassette tapes would eventually rule the landscape, but 8-track laid the groundwork, and this is a tale that includes Private Jets, Dick Clark, the Sears Wishbook, and even Vincent Price... We decided to take a couple weeks off for the holidays, so we remastered a couple older episodes for your enjoyment. We'll be back with a new episode on January 9. Original show notes: Happy holidays, folks! We're breaking from format this episode to dig deep into the nostalgia and look at the Sears Wish Book, an important part of our childhood Christmas experiences. Specifically, we're looking at the catalogs from 1982, 1983 and 1984, which contained, you guessed it, Dungeons & Dragons stuff. They are so much more than that, though, as you'll discover when you listen! And, while we have you, let us offer our tremendous thanks for following Vintage RPG on Instagram, listening to the podcast and making this whole project fun and rewarding on a daily basis. With this installment the curtain comes down not only on a TPC Christmas Trilogy of episodes but also Season One of the Chronicles. It's focus is the music of the season sung by choirs, played on phonographs & heard on every radio station regardless of genre. It's a rich concoction of tunes and melodies that draws from its own roots becoming beloved standards of today. It will also drill down on the huge variety of toys found by Boomer Youth promoted in the commercials of their favorite television shows, hawked by their stars, and appearing full color on the pages of Sears Wish Book & Penney's Christmas Catalog. Together they make another nostalgic chapter in the TPC podcast series. It's the final effort in Season One. Hope you enjoy it.And that it adds to the blessings of this season for you & yours.

With thirteen Christmas episodes over the past four seasons, GamerDude has told a LOT of Christmas stories. This week, he decided to bring some of his favorite stories from Seasons 1, 2, and 3. He talks about the Sears Wishbook and Christmas concerts (from Season 1). He talks about some of the origins of the Christmas holiday, and how Christmas was actually banned in New England - by Christians! - in the 1600s (from Season 2). He also replays the story of the chaotic good gift he and his siblings bought for their Uncle John one year. It's one of those stories that family gatherings were made for.
Writer, editor, producer and actor Jason Liebig joins Tim to talk about the Sears Wishbook. Jason is the creator of a website called WishbookWeb.com, which has archived complete, high-quality scans of Sears Wishbooks and other holiday catalogues going back to 1933. In this episode, we talk about a holiday tradition sure to bring a smile to your face. This episode was first released on December 10, 2018. https://traffic.libsyn.com/secure/shapingopinion/Encore_-_Sears_Wish_Book.mp3 The very first Sears Wish Book was published in 1933. It featured dolls, a Mickey Mouse Watch, Lionel electric trains, fruitcakes, chocolates and even live, singing canaries. The store catalogue was 87 pages long, and featured 25 pages of toys for kids and 62 pages of gifts for adults. The Sears Wish Book grew over the decades, so that by 1968, it totaled 605 pages. And in 1998, it went online with Wishbook.com This year, Sears will not publish a Wish Book, but that is not stopping many from revisiting their childhoods through a website called WishbookWeb.com. Jason Liebig is the man behind it. Sears Wish Book History The first Sears Wish Book came out in 1933. Prior to that, in 1896 the Sears general catalogue included wax candles for Christmas trees. But 1933 was the first year Sears devoted a full catalogue to Christmas. The term Wish Book was an informal name. The real name was Sears Christmas Book Catalogue. The company made it a tradition to put colorful, warm Christmas scenes on the cover. The company published the book annually from 1933 until 1993. The Chicago Tribune once described The Wish Book as, “so central to holiday expectations it read like a catalog of middle-class American Aspiration … To flip through one today is to see what we thought our homes and holidays should look like.” The Wish Book was delivered early. It would usually appear in mailboxes during the late summer right when the school year started. Links WishbookWeb.com CollectingCandy.com The Sears Christmas Wishbook, A Holiday Tradition, Sears Unsung: The Sears Wish Book, a Ghost of Christmas Past, The Chicago Tribune Sears' Wish Book Shown Through the Years, Business Insider About Wishbook Web WishbookWeb.com first launched in 2006, with the initial scanning project having started a year earlier in 2005. From the outset, the goal of the WishbookWeb project has been to archive, preserve, and share the wonderful holiday gift catalogs of the past – making them freely-available to anyone with a web browser. Inspired by the pioneering work of websites like Plaidstallions and MegoMuseum, who had already been sharing select pages of vintage catalogs online, our goal was to build upon that idea by sharing entire volumes, every section and every page. As you see it now, WishbookWeb represents the product of hundreds of hours of work to create the current archive. About this Episode's Guest Jason Liebig Jason Liebig is a New York City based writer, editor, producer, actor and host. After spending much of his early career in the comic book business, most notably as an editor for Marvel Comics' X-Men, he has since split his time between developing his own properties while still consulting and working on others. In addition to his work with WishbookWeb, Jason is one of the country's premier candy collectors and historians with his discoveries appearing in countless blogs, magazines, newspaper articles, and books. He operates a web site called CollectingCandy.com. Always happy to share his knowledge and unique perspectives on this colorful part of our popular culture, Jason has consulted for The Smithsonian, The Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, and New York's Museum of Food and Drink and more. His knowledge of vintage brands and packaging (as well as his singular archive of vintage packaging materials) has allowed him to serve as art department consultant on such period television productions as AMC's Mad Men and...
Ho, ho, ho, Slackers! As the Christmas season is upon us, I harken back to days of old and the Sears Wish Book. Perhaps it was the JC Penney Christmas Catalog. Remember taking hours to carefully consider those items that you wished would end up under the tree? Cabbage Patch Kids, Transformers, Big Wheels...at one point or another those were THE hot gifts of the year. What did you circle in those catalogs? Was there ever a gift that your really wanted and never received? Was there one gift that you can clearly remember the feeling of excitement when you opened it up on Christmas morning? And did anyone get Go Bots instead of Transformers like I did?!Christmas is just a few weeks away. Is there anything you are hoping for this year? I'll take an all expenses paid trip to somewhere warm, please!
We all did it! Dog eared the pages and circled the toy or item we wanted most from the 600 pages of "The Wish Book!"

It's the holiday season, and that means … a mailbox full of catalogs. Or at least it used to. Yes, Amazon got in on the game this year, and some of the old favorites like Sharper Image and LL Bean still have a printer in the office, but the OG of Christmas catalogs - Sears and Roebuck - have gone the way of the dinosaur. In other words, it's almost impossible to find a real one, but they are all over the internet. In this episode The Guys explore ancient Sears Christmas Wishbooks from days gone by (60's, 70's, and 80's, because those are the decades they remember better than yesterday), thanks to a website that scanned each and every page. In other news, we learn that Scarlett is making nice with Kevin, Netflix breaks a record, and Robbie can't take his lightsaber to Disney.

Continuing our month of holiday movies is Deck the Halls. This movie that answers the question, is Matthew Broderick funny? Sadly the answer is not really. As opposed to Danny Devito and Kristen Chenowith who are super funny. Maybe put some holiday joy into your holiday movie. Just an idea.Hate Watching is a show where two guys watch movies and then take the time to make fun of them.#deckthehalls #matthewbroderickWell well well. Who threw Timmy down the well? As kids we were taught to be careful when playing because we might fall down a well. I lived in Southern California. There were no wells. We had indoor plumbing. We were civilized. We were not animals. Except when it came to Christmas. Well at least I was an animal when it came to Christmas. Actually I was more just obsessed. Pouring over the Sears Wishbook. I looked at each page and gauged what were the perfect toys. I did this too when I went to the actual toy store but in truth my passion lay in looking at the images in the catalog. Not surprising that I spent 20 years making living buying and selling on eBay every day. Our childhoods inform everything about our adult lives. But really, who threw Timmy down the well?
GORDIE is joined once again with BRETT STILLO to wax rhapsodical about the good old days of the SEARS Christmas Wishbook. If you grew up with the phenomenon, you'll be right at home. If not, strap in for a bunch of nostalgic memories from two 50 something dudes. VINCENT PRICE, ski families, SILVERTONE guitars, pointing, mustaches, W.C. FIELDS, SCOOBY DOO, BOBBSEY TWINS, KING KONG, MISSES vs JUNIORS, BUDWEISER, BORIS KARLOFF and so much more.
Our first of four holiday themed episodes for Christmas! We turned the wayback machine into a sleigh and went back to Christmas in the 80s to talk about toy fads, crazy people fighting over them and also the Sears wishbook!! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/joe-michalochick/support
Summer in Pawnee! Time to get that catalog for the Parks Department! It's like the Sears Wishbook but with fewer toys.
Right before the Atari VCS, Star Wars toys, and Lego hit big in the 70's there was the 1977 Sears Wish Book. It's like an archive of everything "cool" before things got real. Every year in September or October, the Sears Wish Book would arrive in the mail, and our job was to circle the things we wanted for Christmas. In this episode we dive into the top-50 weird and wonderful products from the 1977 Sears Wishbook (plus some extras) You can follow along in the links below: Wishbook Pages To Follow-along: 60-http://www.wishbookweb.com/FB/1977_Sears_Wishbook/files/assets/basic-html/page-212.html# 59-http://www.wishbookweb.com/FB/1977_Sears_Wishbook/files/assets/basic-html/page-181.html 58-http://www.wishbookweb.com/FB/1977_Sears_Wishbook/files/assets/basic-html/page-198.html# 57- Oops. 56-https://docs.google.com/document/d/1n_PeDI7eu0mTv1T6BVFwyowA-ZFspwJP9Yio-HV-uLk/edit 55-http://www.wishbookweb.com/FB/1977_Sears_Wishbook/files/assets/basic-html/page-562.html# 54-http://www.wishbookweb.com/FB/1977_Sears_Wishbook/files/assets/basic-html/page-604.html# 53-http://www.wishbookweb.com/FB/1977_Sears_Wishbook/files/assets/basic-html/page-599.html# 52-http://www.wishbookweb.com/FB/1977_Sears_Wishbook/files/assets/basic-html/page-479.html 51.http://www.wishbookweb.com/FB/1977_Sears_Wishbook/files/assets/basic-html/page-530.html# http://www.wishbookweb.com/FB/1977_Sears_Wishbook/files/assets/basic-html/page-338.html# 50-http://www.wishbookweb.com/FB/1977_Sears_Wishbook/files/assets/basic-html/page-575.html# 49-

Happy holidays, folks! And, while we have you, let us offer our tremendous thanks for following Vintage RPG on Instagram, listening to the podcast and making this whole project fun and rewarding on a daily basis. All the best this holiday season!

Jason and Chad from Horror Movie BBQ choose items from the 1988 Sears Wishbook!
Writer, editor, producer and actor Jason Liebig joins Tim to talk about the Sears Wishbook. Jason is the creator of a website called WishbookWeb.com, which has archived complete, high-quality scans of Sears Wishbooks and other holiday catalogues going back to 1933. In this episode, we talk about a holiday tradition sure to bring a smile to your face. https://traffic.libsyn.com/shapingopinion/The_Sears_Wishbook_auphonic.mp3 The very first Sears Wish Book was published in 1933. After spending much of his early career in the comic book business, most notably as an editor for Marvel Comics’ X-Men, he has since split his time between developing his own properties while still consulting and working on others. In addition to his work with WishbookWeb, Jason is one of the country’s premier candy collectors and historians with his discoveries appearing in countless blogs, magazines, newspaper articles, and books. He operates a web site called CollectingCandy.com. Always happy to share his knowledge and unique perspectives on this colorful part of our popular culture, Jason has consulted for The Smithsonian, The Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, and New York’s Museum of Food and Drink and more. His knowledge of vintage brands and packaging (as well as his singular archive of vintage packaging materials) has allowed him to serve as art department consultant on such period television productions as AMC’s Mad Men and The Goldbergs on ABC as well as feature films like Stephen...
