After weeks of speculation and thousands of public votes - Hawke's Bay Airport has named its new fire truck 'Judy Drench'. The 1.6 million dollar truck has gained international interest as over 1500 possible names were submitted in the competition, including Spraying Mantis and Trucky McTruck Face. But it's now all hail Dame Judy - who won by a landslide, Alexa Cook reports.
Hawkes Bay Airport has got itself a flash new fire truck, and after weeks of deliberation in a competition to christen it with a name, the people have spoken. A panel of judges whittled down the 1500 entries to a shortlist of five, and the public vote landed on Judy Drench. Maretta Seumanutafa is the author of the name, and she speaks to Emile.

As you may have heard in the media recently, triple drench resistance in cattle is quickly becoming an issue for New Zealand farmers. This week on the podcast, we are joined by Dave Leathwick and Christian Sauerman from AgResearch. They share how they came across the issue, why it has occurred and what producers can do to mitigate the risks of developing triple drench resistance. Dave and Christian are both ‘accidental parasitologists', with Dave initially studying entomology, while Christian was focused on biology and zoology. However, both have now been working with parasites for a combined 51 years! Dave explains that drench resistance has been a long-standing issue: “The national survey that was done on cattle in 2004/2005 - virtually every farm in New Zealand had drench resistance to at least one active - and it just made no difference. Nobody paid any attention.” Now, 20 years later, the issue is far worse. The research pair point out that they weren't looking for evidence of triple drench resistance and it only came to their attention when a few farmers had issues with calves not performing well. FEC tests showed alarmingly high worm numbers, considering the animals had been drenched just three weeks prior, and tipped them off to the extent of the problem. Christian highlights the signs and symptoms that cattle will show and also what producers can do to negate the risks of triple drench resistance. But you'll have to tune in for that! What seen events have drenched your faith in the unseen God? Welcome to the Daily Devo. I am Vince Miller. This week, we are in 1 Samuel 12. I've titled this chapter "God is Faithful When We Are Not." Remember, the nation of Israel is gathered at Gilgal. Samuel is proclaiming his final and historic address before the entire nation: But if you will not obey the voice of the Lord, but rebel against the commandment of the Lord, then the hand of the Lord will be against you and your king. Now therefore stand still and see this great thing that the Lord will do before your eyes. Is it not wheat harvest today? I will call upon the Lord, that he may send thunder and rain. And you shall know and see that your wickedness is great, which you have done in the sight of the Lord, in asking for yourselves a king.” So Samuel called upon the Lord, and the Lord sent thunder and rain that day, and all the people greatly feared the Lord and Samuel. — 1 Samuel 12:15-18 This is awesome because, you see, Samuel is no ordinary teacher. He's not some big-name Christian influencer, pastor, and teacher upheld by public popularity. He's the Lord's anointed Judge and Prophet who was faithful from beginning to end. When Samuel spoke, he spoke on behalf of the Lord, not himself, and never to gain any form of public popularity but to drive the people back to the Lord. But it's the timing of this event and inauguration that is interesting. It happened during the wheat harvest, which means nothing to you, but it meant everything to them. They were an agrarian culture, so they relied on the production of the land. To them, harvest was everything. It was their sustenance for the coming year, and they happened to be gathering on this day. But note: wheat harvest began during early summer when it never rained. Therefore, a sudden thunderstorm and rain would have been a bizarre and unusual occurrence. So now, imagine Samuel speaking. As he closes, he points out their wickedness and calls the people to repent and obey. He prays that God will confirm his exhortation to them with a natural but unlikely event. As he prays behind him, a storm system blows in. Exposed in the valley of Gilgal, thunder roars, lightning strikes, and the people are drenched by an inescapable rain and the might of an inescapable God. Many in this life believe they can escape the reality of God. We think we can outthink and outmaneuver God, but eventually, sin rains down on us all, and we are drenched by the inescapable reality that God is the only one who can save. He is the unseen God who is King over all seen things. And sometimes God uses seen yet unexplainable events to communicate that he is still there, still working, and still saving. Recently, our first grandchild entered this world. Everett was born accidentally at home three months early while my daughter put on her pants in the bathroom. Within minutes, EMTs were at her home. They cut the cord and rushed Everett off to the hospital. On the way to the hospital, an EMT held him in his hands as he stopped breathing. They tried to resuscitate him and were unsure if their efforts on this tiny child were effective. But with God and a lot of prayers from people like you, Everett is home. He is alive and well. It was a wild ride. Today, Everett is almost 12 pounds, and he is thriving. God has drenched our lives using this small child to show us the inescapable reality of an awesome God. Here's my question for you today: What "seen" events have drenched you in the reality of our "unseen" God? Recall one, and share it with someone today. Drench them in the reality of God. #FaithInAction, #UnseenGod, #DivineIntervention Ask This: How have unexpected or extraordinary events in your life helped you recognize the presence and faithfulness of God, even when He seemed unseen? In what ways can you share your experiences of God's intervention with others to encourage them in their own faith journeys? Do This: Share the seen events of God with others. Pray This: Lord, thank You for revealing Your presence through the unexpected events in my life and reminding me of Your unwavering faithfulness. Help me to see and share Your work in my daily experiences, trusting in Your unseen power and grace. Amen. Play This: My Life Is Proof.

Send us a Text Message. From direct organic lamb sales to a firewood business and developing algorithms for drench recommendations, the Cotter family pretty much do it all. This week we have Nick Cotter of Cotter Agritech on the podcast to chat about their farm in County Limerick, Ireland, and the various inventions and innovations they have come up with. In Ireland, sheep farming is considered the least profitable, behind beef and dairy. This prompted the Cotter family to convert to organic farming in 2014. Nick Cotter discusses the challenges of organic farming and the direct marketing of organic lamb products. "It is bloody hard and there is a lot of work in it. But if you get it right, there is a significant premium to be found," he explains. As the proverb goes, necessity is the mother of invention and Nick explains that the added challenges of being organic inspired them to create “a lot of good ideas.”One of their first ideas was their CotterCrate, a manual sheep handling and weighing system. The handling system was thought up after having to handle lambs more often under an organic regime. They developed it over a year, adding and changing things as they went. Then they took it on the road and worked with farmers to finesse the design. So, it is truly built by farmers, for farmers.Their latest engineering feat is SmartWorm. As an organic producer, Nick is all too aware of the challenge of reducing drench usage, along with minimising drench resistance in sheep and cattle farming, so Cotter Agritech created technology to combat the issue. Instead of directly counting worms, SmartWorm assesses the real-time impact on lamb performance through a special algorithm. The tool integrates multiple factors to make accurate predictions for drenching, significantly reducing unnecessary dosing without compromising animal health or weight gain. The algorithm considers factors such as recent weather conditions, lamb physiology, recent drenches and pasture availability. With real-time analysis, it accurately determines whether treatment is necessary for each lamb.Cotter Agritech is currently focused on driving the adoption of SmartWorm technology in Ireland, the UK, New Zealand and Australia, with plans for expansion into cattle farming. If you are interested in working with Cotter Agritech, contact Nick at info@cottergagritech.com.You can find out more about their technology here: cotteragritech.com. Well, folks, it's Matthew Adams here, and I've got a story that might resonate with the wanderer in you. Imagine you're in the desert, and all you've got is a thirst you can't quench. But instead of water, what you're really yearning for is a connection. A connection to something, or rather someone, bigger than us all.Scripture:“As the deer longs for streams of water, so I long for you, O God. I thirst for God, the living God. When can I go and stand before him?” - PSALM 42:1-2In a world that offers endless amusements and distractions, there's this underlying thirst. It's like going to a diner, looking at a menu full of options, and still feeling something's missing. The best steaks and the fanciest desserts just don't cut it. We're searching for something... more.My Reasons To Believe is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.Driving Points:* The World's Menu and the Missing Ingredient:You've seen those shows, right? The ones where folks go around trying all kinds of exotic foods? Now imagine sitting in the fanciest restaurant, and no matter how sumptuous the feast, there's still this little void. That's what worldly pleasures can sometimes feel like. They're delicious, sure, but something's missing. That's the yearning for God, that special flavor we often overlook.* More Than A Wi-Fi Connection:We live in an era of instant messaging, video calls, and social media. Yet, we all yearn for a deeper, uninterrupted connection. A bond with God, where there's no "last seen" or "read receipt", but just a continuous outpouring of love and understanding.* Hearing the Call - It's All About Craving:Listening to God isn't about buying the fanciest headphones or following a ten-step guide. It's about genuine thirst. When we're parched and there's only one well in sight, we're going to drink from it, right? That's how it is with God's voice. Desire Him above all, and you'll hear Him clear as day. Conclusion:So, as we trek through this dusty trail called life, remember this: God is the stream, the oasis, the fountain, and the well. Our longing, that deep-seated thirst, is the compass pointing right to Him.Call to Action:Alright, adventurers, here's the game plan: Next time you feel that pang of emptiness or thirst, instead of reaching for the usual distractions, pause. Reflect. Dive deep into prayer or perhaps a scripture. Let's make it our mission to quench our spiritual thirst and truly connect with God.Prayer:Lord Almighty, it's a dusty trail, and the mirages are plenty. But my compass? That's my thirst for You. Drench me with Your wisdom, and let Your voice guide me to the oasis of truth. Fill this cup, Lord, till it overflows.Well, friends, it's been a real journey today. As you continue down your path, let that thirst guide you, and remember to always stay tuned to God's frequency amidst all the static. Until next time, keep the faith, and happy adventuring! Cheers! What do teen idols, sports teams, and ancient gods have in common? They're all potential American Idols, according to Tim Keller's thought-provoking book Counterfeit Gods. This episode explores the slippery slope of when good things become ultimate things, leading us to unwittingly cast our votes for our very own American Idols. Journey with us as we trek through stories from the book of Daniel, revisit the Golden Calf episode, and scrutinize the struggles with idolatry of the church at Pergamum.Drench yourself in the spiritual darkness of ancient Pergamum, a city devoted to worshiping gods and emperors. Witness the courage of Antipas, who refused to bow to the city's idols, and feel the piercing revelation of Jesus' double-edged sword exposing the idols within us. The episode culminates in a powerful reflection on the redeeming power of Jesus, who not only reveals the idols in our hearts but also invites us to repent and receive the reward of his grace. Will you be brave enough to ask Jesus to illuminate your heart, and strong enough to turn away from your own idols, trusting only in him for salvation? Tune in to find out.

Something I feel has been the golden thread that holds my life story is the relationship I have with my body. For many years I studied how to dismantle self loathing thoughts about my body using my mind. I was a veritable library of eating disorder statistics and belief based methods to recondition how I felt about my reflection. These things absolutely changed the way I thought about my body, but didn't actually do much to change how I felt when I saw my reflection in the mirror. If you too would like to look upon your body with affection, warmth and even a little, dare I say…desire, then today's episode was written just for you. Want to join me in crossing over from thinking you should love your body, to actually feeling it radiate from the inside out? Drench yourself in the warm glow of today's episode. As they say in Italy, Attraversiamo! (Let's cross over.) With love, Mary
Want to know more about sheep parasites? This week we have Ginny Dodunski on the podcast chatting everything from drenches and capsules, to resistance and refugia. This podcast is full of handy helpful tips which will hopefully make you take a step back and look at your worm management program on farm. In the last 12 month Ginny has been the Wormwise program manager but prior to that Ginny was (and still is) a practicing large animal vet. Wormwise was launched as an initiative to help farmers manage drench resistance Ginny says resistance (to anthelmintics) was always going to happen. "Parasites were always going to develop a resistance to drugs. The more days in the year your worm population is exposed to drugs, the more opportunities they have to breed and get around it."Mark and Ginny spend the podcast discussing what you can do if you do have a drench resistance, and how you can clean your farm up practically. From different methods of refugia, cattle grazing, careful management of drench usage, Ginny says there are solutions to the problem. However, Mark says, "Well monitored is the only way to be, you cant do any of this shooting blind." Ginny explains that for the first few years technical management can be overwhelming, but once you "get your eye in", she says it can be a lot less formal. Mark and Ginny discuss the genetics behind it, and how it's not always about doing fecael egg counts and watching drenches. "Its about really focusing on feed and condition and minimising larval challenge."If you'd like to keep up to date with Ginny and Wormwise you can find them on Facebook here.Head Shepherd is brought to you by neXtgen Agri International Limited, we help livestock farmers get the most out of the genetics they farm with. Writer and performer Alison Tafel (Bojack Horseman) joins to discuss the post-apocalyptic action spectacular WATERWORLD starring Kevin Costner, Jeanne Tripplehorn and Dennis Hopper. Director Kevin Reynolds' environmentalist cautionary tale of a water-submerged planet was the most notoriously troubled production of Hollywood's old school blockbuster era, going wildly over-budget and releasing to middling reviews and an underwhelming box office take in 1995. Time has (somewhat) redeemed the reputation of WATERWORLD, with the contemporary consensus indicating a more favorable view of the film's entertainment value and worldwide box office performance, not to mention the long-running and beloved Universal Studios stunt show it has inspired.
