In our series In Conversation, we hear from Sonja Griegoschewski, the director of the Goethe Institute, how we can have fun with language. Like so many other events, Covid is also throwing a spanner in the works for the European Day of Languages. But instead of him as usual on September 26th. To celebrate with a big event, this year there is the online competition #literallyEurope, which the Goethe Institute organised together with the cultural institutes of the Austrians, French, Italians and Spaniards. It's about the often amusing subject of proverbs and idioms and how to translate them. These should be creatively represented in a photo. You post the photo including the phrase in the original language, literal English translation and meaning with the hashtag #literallyEurope on the Facebook or Instagram page. It's the European Day of Languages! Yay! Here on the show, we love to celebrate this day. 3 years ago, Lindsay and I got together to bring you a HUGE quiz (https://www.fluentlanguage.co.uk/blog/european-day-languages-quiz), we've made videos, we've spoken lots of European languages. We even have a European Day of Languages playlist on Spotify! And today, this special episode will bring you a quiz with a twist and you can play along. How To Play Before recording this show, Lindsay and I enrolled an assistant, Josiah who selected a list of 10 European languages for each of us We went away and researched those languages and also found out what they sound like So Lindsay has 10 and I have 10 and we don't know each others' lists We'll now play these languages to each other and to you listeners…and try to guess what they are! Europe doesn't just have the obvious languages, so this might get tricky but we're ready to give it a good go! Get Language Facts And Resources These show notes do NOT include the links for all the different languages mentioned on the show, because that would be spoiling the quiz for you. If you'd like to get a copy of the notes, simply click here to join the Fluent Language Newsletter. Episode 25: Herman Van Rompuy & Theresa May's Manic Monday

POLITICO's EU Confidential

Former European Council President Herman Van Rompuy talks to host Ryan Heath about the future of the EU in this week's episode. EU reform and Brexit haiku: Since leaving office, Van Rompuy has been shepherding a major report on the future of the EU, the New Pact for Europe, in the name of several leading foundations and think tanks. In a challenge almost as daunting, he has composed a haiku about Brexit especially for EU Confidential listeners. Hear the haiku — in English and in Dutch — in this week's podcast. A hopeful multi-speed Europe: Van Rompuy's political goal with the report is to create the practical steps that can "turn fear into hope" across Europe. It's a modest, Belgian approach to healing some serious wounds in the EU body politic. He says multi-speed Europe can work in certain circumstances and that “the countries who want to make progress on some issues have all the instruments they need” already. We also talk to the lead author of the report, Janis A. Emmanouilidis. EU WTF moment of the week — Manic Monday: Theresa May came to Brussels expecting a Brexit deal but left empty-handed: scuppered by her own governing majority at home. Hear our take on the deal that wasn't. EU Thumbs Up: The panel looks at the efforts to map accessibility in Europe on the occasion of European Day of Persons with Disabilities. Dear POLITICO: The panel advises a man of South Asian descent who complains that an MEP is constantly confusing him with another man from the region. Though they look quite different, they have the same skin color, our correspondent says.

Welcome to our first ever LIVE episode of the Creative Language Learning Podcast! In episode 24, we treat you to a piece of the European Day of Languages broadcast which was the first time ever that Lindsay and I tried something like this. There was so much going on: Music! Live comments! A Revival of the Languages vs. Dialects Debate! Reports on Log Sawing in Germany! And a special: Kerstin Is British Moment In this podcast I caught myself being super British all of a sudden. I mentioned teenagers "on top of a bus" - rest assured that I didn't mean they ride on top of the vehicle and instead meant the top deck of double decker buses. European Language Charts!
