Sit down with a group of kindergartners and ask, "Raise you hand if you're creative!" and every single child will raise their hand. Ask a room full of adults that same question, and you'll only get a few hands. So what happens between childhood and adulthood? It's not that we are no longer creative - perhaps we have just lost touch with our creativity! Diane Harpster (she/her) is all about reminding people of their inner creative, reminding them they are made in the image of the greatest Creator. With her Zentangle art, she connects with her own faith and with God, and by teaching that artform to others, she encourages them to do the same.About Diane (she/her)As a child, Diane was surrounded by women who made beautiful things with their hands using fabric, yarn, flowers, and fruits of their gardens, and more. It was through them that she learned that creating not only brings joy to the Creator but has the potential to bless others with beauty and joy as well. Diane is a certified Zentangle teacher, an artform founded by Rick Roberts and Maria Thomas. She has experienced the calming benefits of this meditative practice, and enjoys teaching others. Recently, we have focused the lens of The Breakout Growth Podcast on the role of product in driving sustainable growth. We had a super-interesting conversation with Georgia Vidler, Canva’s former Head of Product, and this week we picked up that theme with Maria Thomas, Buffer’s Chief Product Officer. Buffer provides social media tools to facilitate authentic engagement with end-users. Customers can pre-schedule posts on multiple channels, engage with commenters, create reports, and more using the service. Maria is relatively new to the company, having previously served as VP of Product Management at Bitly, so it is interesting to hear her compare and contrast her experiences between these two fast-growing businesses. To Maria, the single biggest growth driver at Buffer has been “brand beyond the product.” She explains that brand recognition is a tremendously important factor for both Buffer and Bitly, but with different go-to-market strategies Buffer’s brand in the context of its mission is what she sees as the company’s secret sauce. The ability to speak to customers on a deeper mission-focused level has been a key factor in Buffer’s approach, and Maria explains that “Buffer was a product-led growth company even before PLG was cool.” From a product perspective, this has meant putting intense focus on building the user experience to power acquisition, retention, and expansion. We also learn that the company’s super-transparent culture that embraced remote work long before the pandemic began, has helped drive Buffer’s data-driven test/learn culture. However, it has also created interesting communications challenges along the way. As Maria describes how she has overcome these and other challenges, we get great insights into the world of growth from a product perspective. This is a fun one, enjoy! We discussed: * Getting used to Buffer’s super transparent culture (3:30) * How a well-known brand impacts growth, plus its impact on product (7:35) * Highlighting Bitly vs. Buffer when it comes to go-to-market strategies (7:50) * Key growth factors and challenges in Buffer’s Product Led Growth approach (8:34) * Advantages and challenges of a no-meetings culture and asynchronous communications (13:05) * Working with data; super-important but not a replacement for working with customers (19:41) * Why MAU is the right North Star Metric to drive growth at Buffer (24:28) * Organizational leadership where product and marketing are in constant communications (26:30) * Why Maria believes in a dedicated growth team approach (27:00) And much, much, more . . .

It’s been two years since the Windrush scandal, where at least 164 black British citizens were wrongly deported to countries of their birth or detained in the UK. The scandal has had a lasting impact on the Afro-Caribbean community, with many owed compensation from the government. The Home Office recently approved a flight from London to Jamaica which was deporting convicted offenders who have been here for most of their lives. Once again, many black Brits say they feel targeted and are being forced to question what it really means to be British. We spoke to two BBC reporters: Shamaan Freeman-Powell, who’s been following the story from the beginning, and Greg McKenzie, who followed the flight to Jamaica and has spoken to Brits who say they’ve been forced to leave their home. Maria Thomas, a lawyer at Duncan Lewis Solicitors, explains why a last-minute legal challenge stopped some of the detainees from being deported. I met Maria Thomas (of My Life as a Puddle) at the Truthteller Tour in Boulder earlier this year. We were both featured speakers sharing truths about ourselves that were not easy to share. It was an emotional night where the power of sharing painful truths was both liberating and an intense connector to others that we didn’t even know. After the event, Maria realized how sharing her story with others could help so many people, so she reached out and here we are. Maria’s story starts with her early diagnosis of hyperhidrosis but it turns into so much more as she has navigated this journey called life, sometimes with courage and sometimes in fear. We recorded in the Skirt Sports Boulder store, after hours, surrounded by skirts, bras, successes, failures, the past and the future. It was like a glimpse into the deep guts of one world while we literally talked about the guts of another woman’s world. Today we talk about: Hyperhidrosis: Uncontrollable excessive sweating that started for her when she was as young as 6 Marriage: Divorce, Cheating & Forgiveness Faith Gut health / Brain health connection What it feels like to want to kill yourself Her path to a healthy mind & healthy body Some great reads: No Grain, No Pain by Dr. Peter Osborne and Grain Brain & The Grain Brain Whole Life Plan both by Dr. David Perlmutter And so much more I think about what Maria is able to share today and it makes me so proud. And grateful. Grateful that Maria gave herself a wakeup call. Grateful that she is so willing to be open about very difficult topics that many people are too embarrassed to mention. There are so many life situations and so many nuggets in this episode. I’d love to hear your favorites. If you want to connect with Maria be sure to contact her through her website mylifeasapuddle.com – I love her tagline “creating hyperhidrosis hope and awareness one drop at a time.” And I’ll leave you by repeating her final nugget “you have a choice every day whether you are going to rise above or stay below. And just take that one next step to become a better person whatever that might look like for you.” More ways to connect with Maria https://www.instagram.com/mylifeasapuddle/ https://www.facebook.com/mylifeasapuddle/ https://twitter.com/MyLifeAsAPuddle
