What does it mean when we say something is “meant to be”? In this episode we're going to talk about things that are meant to be, what it actually means, and how we can just accept whatever we're going through today, because maybe, it is going to land us exactly where we need to go, even if it is away from our original plans. There is no surprise that our mental health and our confidence is damaged on a daily basis, on an hourly basis, by the way in which we communicate with ourselves. That mean inner dialogue, the way we speak to ourselves can increase our confidence or completely decrease it. So if you begin to take note of how you think, and then you begin to give importance to how you think to that voice. And then you begin to talk to yourself, like you talk to somebody that you love with kindness, with understanding. We have all been the person who thinks; “if only I apply a little more worry, a little more micro-managing and supervision, then the outcome we want will be inevitable”. I enjoy working with Type A, overachiever women because it reminds me of some of the early mindset work I've had to do to get out of my controlling tendencies. Years ago, I was a former therapist and clinical social worker. But very early on in my professional career as a clinician, I also became certified as a mindfulness instructor. Six years ago I jumped into the idea of making my dreams into reality, I let go of my fears and started my coaching business. It was exciting and scary at the same time. Recently, I received a beautiful email from a good friend of mine. Katelyn is the CEO of Mother Nurture and a coach specifically to moms. Research tells us that it takes 21 days to create a new habit, but as research progressed it has been found out that 21 days is just halfway to creating a new habit. This explains why many of us fail despite successfully completing the 21 days. In this episode, I want to share with you new research that has helped me a lot in creating new habits. In this episode, Bailey has an amazing and insightful conversation with a brilliant medical doctor in the wellness world, Dr. Vivian Chen. Together, they talk about Dr. Chen's story and the driving forces that led her onto this journey of wellness beyond the western medicine approach. A main force was her children. Her daughter had life threatening struggles early on in life with allergies, which had Vivian digging deeper for answers on how to help her daughter. As they changed her daughters diet, they began to see what the root causes were, instead of the reactions. What began as allergies with dairy, quickly turned into looking at all the toxicity in our conventional food. Which then led to looking at the toxicity beyond food, to our general cleaning products we use in our household, to the daily environment we surround ourselves with, and to the whole world we live in. She eventually changed her life, and her family's life by changing their diets, ridding their lives of toxicity as much as possible, and educating herself and others on the products we use everyday. She notices very common illnesses among many different people, and she believes it's coming from many common root sources. She uses the metaphor: if see ourselves as a garden, with many different plants and with soil lacking certain important nutrients, how it's going to show up will be different in different plants. If we change the soil and replenish it, we will start to see results in all the plants, just like ourselves. They dive deep into some of the many sources of toxic load and the science behind it. How not to focus on just one toxin, but one all of them in our life. Learning to minimize toxins is an everyday task. Your everyday actions make a huge different. In this episode I head back to NYC and take a trip to my home borough of Staten Island to visit Dr. Fred Bisci. It was twenty six years ago that he started as my nutritionist, then became my mentor and has become one of my oldest friends and colleagues. We sat in that same office where so many years ago I learned about the beginning stages of the cleansing life and plant based nutrition. I'm not even sure this podcast, Vitality NYC or my career as a colonic therapist would even exist if I hadn't met him. Although there's so many new things to learn about health sciences from him I tend to drop into more personal conversation about his history and spiritual life. For over two years I’ve intentionally held back questions in anticipation of this podcast. I wanted my conversation with David to be authentic and fresh. I first experienced NSA (Network Spinal Analysis) during the initial six months we created Vitality. It was a tremendous time of stress and anxiety and my body took notice. I would suffer with excruciating headaches as well as back and neck pain. Traditional chiropractors were great at putting me back together for what sometimes only lasted 30 minutes! Since external stresses remained constant so did my symptoms. When I started network care, not only did my spine begin realigning, but I adapted my ability to navigate, process and own the way I reacted to stress preventing issues before they got physical. BEING A "FOOD WEIRDO" AND LIVING ON PURPOSE. Welcome to the 7th episode of the Free Spirit Academy Podcast with Holistic Detox Counselor and Colon Hydrotherapist Michael Perrine. If you'll recall a couple of episodes back, I spoke with another colonic guru - Gil Jacobs. And you're probably thinking...what is with this girl and poop? And that would be a valid question ;) All I'll say is that when something changes your life - you share it. That's been true for me with kundalini yoga, intuitive eating, self-love, and cleansing my body in what might seem like an unconventional way. That said, the way I approached healing a lifetime of binge eating was also unconventional. Rather than willpower and control (which mind you, I DID try for years) I found freedom in surrender of rules, slowing down, and self-exploration. Rather continuing to promise myself that I'd never binge eat again, I started sitting down with those binges and really exploring who I was in those moments. And it changed everything - so don't be afraid of unconventional or seemingly unnatural. What's natural is WELL. Wellness is natural. Have you heard that little story about the guy who was banging his head against the wall and went to the doctor for a headache and the doctor told him to stop banging his head against the wall? Well actually, now that I think about it, a lot of doctors would probably have given him a prescription but the SANE response would be to look at the cause. We become more free when we don't have a massive blockage in the way of our expression. That blockage could be beliefs about ourselves that aren't true or traumas we suffered. The body is also more free when it's natural state isn't blocked. And that's the heart of what we'll talk about today. Back to Mike. Today we'll talk about: His first colonic with Gil Jacobs (of podcast #5) in 2002. How we went from drinking and smoking 2 packs of cigarettes every day and being 50 pounds heavier to the incredibly level of wellness he lives with today. The book he read one day when he stayed home to recover from drinking - that ended up changing his life. Why colon cleansing in and of itself isn't that useful and how it can even (like all things) be turned into a tool for disorder. The magic of cryotherapy. Embracing what's unnatural in response to unnatural living. Rebellion that serves you vs. rebellion that hurts you. The concept of "eating clean" and what it actually means. - not a moral thing where we're like "oh I was so good today" or "I was so bad today - gotta get back on track" - this is so far beyond that. And to give you a taste of what you're about to go into, one of my favorite quotes from Mike in this conversation: "An apple a day keeps the doctor away 'cause it makes you shit." Now a certified nutritionist consultant (CNC) with years of experience under her belt, she’s settled on a more moderate “everyday detox” approach that keeps her on track and works for her whole family. More real food, more veggies, more sleep. That’s a detox that’s doable! Everyday Detox for Your Best Health So what does it mean to “detox,” really? That word can certainly take on a host of meanings in the health world. Megan defines it as eating nourishing foods that support the body’s natural detox functions. And this makes so much sense. I was cycling through the park a few weeks ago and somewhere in between the Morrissey and Wu Tang an old episode of Vitality Radio started playing. For those that don’t know (basically everyone) I used to have a radio show on tribecaradio.net with my ex-business partner Donna Perrone. To be honest I usually cringe when I hear it. I was super uptight, inexperienced and nervous when we were making that show. However, some of our guests were amazing. David Wolfe, Pat Rooney (aka Pat the Plumber) and Dr. Fred Bisci to name a few. The episode that popped up had Dr. Fred Bisci as our guest. That show aired March 20th 2008 and raw food mania was still at it’s peak. We had some real deal conversation on complete lifestyle change, deep tissue cleansing and natural healing. It’s from a time when a majority of our clients were into spiritual raw foodism and radical health seeking. People were willing to go deep into cleansing with excitement and passion. I love and miss that part of the work. I rarely get to discuss these things deeply anymore. So this was such a nice surprise to hear on that bike ride! I took two shows that we did with Dr. Bisci that day and I pulled all of the gems out and put them together into a 50 minute podcast. It's such important content.
