Mariluz Cook (Miss Utah USA, Sports Broadcaster, and Host), joins Utah's First Lady, Abby Cox, to talk about sharing her culture with others as a Cuban-American, her decision to move to Utah from Florida to pursue sports broadcasting, and where her passion for sports originated when she was younger. Then Mariluz talks about her experience being selected to host the Rising Stars and All-Star Saturday night during NBA All-Star weekend last year, how competing in pageants helped persuade her to chase a dream of public speaking, and why she was hesitant to pursue Miss Utah USA as a known broadcaster to avoid being put into a box. Lastly, we talk about Mariluz’s experiences in a male-dominated field, some of the amazing women who have paved the way to propel others in the sports landscape, and how approaching an opportunity with a, “Why Not Me?” attitude can help build the confidence to chase your dreams. Lastly, Sarah opens up about using her platform as Miss Utah to advocate for better education and programming in prisons, the impact that different cultural evolutions have had on modesty, and why we need more women in leadership. What on earth, would make "pageants" part of the Gametime Guru Podcast? I'll tell you what... I had the chance to be a judge for the Miss Idaho Pageant in June (2022) and it opened my eyes to this whole world, and I wanted to provide the listeners with an opportunity to learn about this space too. There are MANY amazing skillsets these young women acquire from the pageant space, and I want you to be able to learn about that today. So that's why I'm actually bringing on Jocelyn Osmond (who is Miss Utah's Outstanding Teen) whom I met during the Miss Idaho Pageant (she was there supporting the other girls) In this interview you're going to get to know Jocelyn as a person and realize just how impactful the pageant experience has been for her. The skillsets of public speaking, performing under pressure, helping out in the community, having a social impact initiative and actually being able to articulate WHY you are so passionate about that subject, connecting with others, and much more! These are all topics we'll discuss today on the show! Don't miss out on the answer she gives regarding her last name. It's obvious the Osmond name holds some strong value in it, but Jocelyn is out to create her OWN legacy!! What's great is Jocelyn is actually a talk show host for Teen Talk out of KSL in Salt Lake City! She's been able to connect with so many awesome people on this show and have authentic conversations with them. I'd highly encourage you to check this show out on KSL Podcasts. We'll have a chat about her experience with that platform as well today. I'd also highly encourage you to follow her on social media. Jocelyn is prepping for Nationals which will be held at the beginning of August 2022 and you can follow her journey on her social platforms. Instagram: @jocelyn_osmond and Teen Talk on Instagram is: @theteentalkshow I can't wait to see the awesome things Jocelyn accomplishes in her life and right now this is just the beginning. Lindsey Larsen was a shy middle school kid in Utah who loved ballet and excelled at it. She looked up at the walls of the local gym to admire the long row of pageant winners who appeared to have it all. Wanting to overcome her shyness, she won a local pageant. Then another. And earlier this year she was crowned Miss Utah. Jocelyn interviews Lindsey, who shares that pageant winners don't really have it all--they're just like everyone else, dealing with trials and setbacks that others rarely see.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In episode 20, we chat with Miss Utah and CEO of Archive Sunday, Sasha Esprit Sloan. Hear about her upcoming Miss Utah competition, how she used Tik Tok to grow her small business, and the future of the famous Noble Black Series!
Do you have any regrets in life? Have you ever asked yourself this, or the people you love? This is a great topic that a lot of people may or may not have even thought about. But it's something that probably most people will have to deal with at some point in their life. Today, Neil and I share candidly our regrets in life, and what we've learned from them. Nonetheless, God has just poured out all these blessings on us because we've been willing to just let him take over. He has given us this life that's a million times more beautiful than what we could have ever planned or hoped for. We also share the top 3 most common things people regret before they die as well as 3 resolutions you can make today that will help you avoid some of the deepest regrets in life. We challenge you to make those three resolutions, and if we can just make that conscious choice to live life the way God exactly wants us to live, then we will be able to find more joy in life. In this episode, you will hear: Neil's regret is missing out on the opportunities that he could have had and mine was wasting Miss Utah and not serving a mission because I didn't live up to my potential. When my ex-husband and I were dating and getting close to marriage, I felt a strong prompting not to marry him. Opposite of that voice of warning, I've also had so many times where the Spirit has told me exactly how God wants me to live my life. We don't get to redo childhood. I regretted not connecting well with my sister as we were growing up. I thought I wasted years of what could have been great childhood memories. (Although I have a super great relationship with her now!) Neil's two full brothers, Steve and Dave, have passed away. Neil talks about the conversation he had with his brother Steve, six months before he died when he asked Neil to never do drugs, alcohol, and smoke. The 3 most common things people regret before they die: not spending time with people they love (or maybe they could have spent it differently), not living up to their potential, and spending so much of their life being miserable. "The joy we feel has little to do with the circumstances of our lives and everything to do with the focus of our lives." - Russell M. Nelson God put us on this earth to have joy and to be happy. And we all have our peaks and valleys, but when we put our focus on the right things, those bring joy in our lives. The 3 resolutions to help avoid some of the deepest regrets of life: resolve to spend more time with those you love, strive more earnestly to become the person God wants you to be, and resolve to find happiness regardless of your circumstances. Miss Utah 2020 brings here encore performance to the studio with America's Podcaster, Kurt Caceres, and opens up raw and unfiltered about her bipolar disorder, bisexuality, and the multiple times she tried to take her own life. Growing up watching her father physically assault her mother, gave her PTSD and traumatized a young Rachel for life. She has had to work hard to understand how to have healthy romantic relationships as well as coming to acceptance and going public with her sexuality. Growing up and raised in the Mormon church, she was taught that being gay was wrong, to the point that they would denounce any family that supported a gay child. She had to hide her true self in shame for many years until eventually realizing she couldn't do it anymore. After numerous times competing to win Miss Utah and having plastic surgery to change her body to what she thought the pageants wanted, she attempted to take her own life as a result of her not succeeding in the pageant. Diagnosed with bipolar disorder, she has now found ways to live a healthy lifestyle mixed with the right amount of medication to live a normal and balanced life. This young woman has overcome more obstacles before 25 years old than most experience in a lifetime. She is an example and inspiration for all the youth out there who are battling the same demons. Guest Bio:Rachel Slawson was crowned Miss Utah USA 2020 on Saturday, January 18, making her the first out contestant to win the coveted title. Rachel, 25, will continue on the same history-making path when she competes on a bigger stage in the Miss USA pageant this spring. Since its inception in 1952, Miss USA has never had an openly bisexual contestant, until now.At 19-years-old, Rachel tried to commit suicide after she lost Miss Utah USA, she wrote in a candid post on Instagram just one day after winning the pageant. Rachel was crowned Miss Utah USA 2020 after competing in the pageant five times. “After a few trips to the psych ward, being diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder (the reason I had such an extreme reaction to losing a pageant) and finally coming to terms with who I am as a queer woman,” she wrote in part in the caption of a photo from the night she was crowned. As Miss Utah USA she plans to share her “truth.”She works as a suicide prevention advocate for the Crisis Text Line and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Rachel speaks out frequently about her own experiences, both good and bad with mental health struggles on social media. Her hashtag, #IAmWhy, promotes self-worth. Rachel has spoken about mental health at events, including the TEDxCitrusParkWomen event in California on December 7, 2019. She's focused on breaking down the stigmas surrounding bipolar disorder and other mental health issues, which she blogs about on her website.
