The history of the Connecticut Western Reserve, also known as the Western Reserve, is one of the most interesting histories recorded. It was an area in the Northwest Territory held, sold and distributed by the State of Connecticut in the years after the American Revolution. A part of the Western Reserve, the Firelands or the Sufferers' Lands, was set aside for sufferers who were burned out of their homes by the British during the American Revolutionary War.In this episode, Jim and Dan talk about the history of the Western Reserve, how it was held, sold, and distributed. Josh Malave returns to the show after his appearance on Episode 6. LINK Malave takes over at Case Western Reserve Universite after five years at his alma mater, the University of Mount Union. As head coach his team produced two National Champions, 14 national qualifiers, six All-Americans and a pair of top-10 national team finishes. He coached at the High School level prior to NCAA coaching (Firelands & Union Pines, NC) Malave began his career in coaching after an accomplished collegiate career as a wrestler at Mount Union. He was a two-time national qualifier for the Purple Raiders, earning All-America honors in 2012. A two-time team captain for the program, Malave was a three-time All-OAC selection, a two-time conference champion, and a two-time NWCA Scholar All-American. His books of gay historical fiction include two series, The Drowning World, which is set in 5500 B.C., and The Savage Land, which takes place on the American frontier in the late 1700s. Man & Monster, the second book in The Savage Land series, was a Lambda Award Finalist (under the title Firelands).Michael is also the co-founder of AfterElton.com, which covered pop culture for gay and bisexual men, and eventually became one of the largest and most influential LGBT websites on the internet. In 2006, AfterElton.com was sold to MTV/Viacom. As editor, Michael interviewed hundreds of writers, directors, and actors, breaking numerous stories and advancing the issue of LGBT visibility in Hollywood.
