In this video, we dive deep into the chilling parallels between the Terminator's Future War and the potential for an AI robot war in our own timeline. Inspired by Terminator 2: Judgment Day's haunting opening, we explore the T-800's role in a ravaged Los Angeles at night, where humans, drones, and hovering attack helicopters clash in a desperate struggle for survival. With Skynet's relentless machines—like the T-800 with its glowing red eyes—dominating the battlefield, this scene captures the horror of an AI uprising that feels all too plausible in today's world. In this episode we will be discussing computer chip vulnerabilities. In recent years the United States has shifted focus from the Global War on Terrorism to preparing for peer level threats. Key to this shift is the development of modern, networked weapons. These weapons would not be possible without microelectronics, better known as computer chips. These small components are the enabling technology for every aspect of modern society and advanced weaponry. How would the F-35 get off the ground without computer chips? While the development of these chips is a worldwide endeavor, over 98% of logic and memory chips are fabricated in just two countries, both located in the Indo-Pacific region. What happens if the supply of these chips is threatened? How can the United States meet this challenge?Scott Chafian, and Daniel Marujo, the president of Trusted Strategic Solutions, will review this, and more, in this month's episode of On Future War.References and NotesTSS Microchip Primer - https://tss.llc/microchip-primer/DOD INSTRUCTION 5200.44 - Protection of Mission Critical Functions to Achieve Trusted Systems and Networkshttps://www.esd.whs.mil/portals/54/documents/dd/issuances/dodi/520044p.pdfGhost Fleet: A Novel of the Next World War by P. Darin Gaub enlisted in the Army as a private and, after a 28 year career retired at the rank of Lt. Colonel. He is often called upon by national media and publications to comment on military and geopolitical issues.  Gaub joins us to provide his perspective on the current status of affairs in the middle and Far East. After finishing his active duty enlistment he joined the National Guard and went to college on an ROTC scholarship. When it came time to select which area to serve in, he was told that no one from his university was ever selected for the Army Aviation Branch. Guab says he would become an Army aviator “on a dare, not a plan.” He had seven deployments to Afghanistan, North Africa, Eastern Europe and the DMZ along North and South Korea. We have a fascinating and insightful discussion about the current situation in the Middle East. “For anyone to try to explain the Middle East is an experiment in trying to make the complicated simple.” He emphasizes that the current war is not between Israel and the Lebanese people but rather against Hezbollah. He is in weekly contact with sources in Beirut and says the Lebanese people would prefer that Hezbollah be gone. He describes Israel's tactics of more of a “water against a bank” strategy rather than “shock and awe.” Gaub believes that their attack against command and control elements has been masterful. Gaub spends some time explaining the “nexus of evil” comprised of Russia, China, North Korea and Iran. He cautions that the actions of these actors is not always obvious – strategies that are slowly eroding our nation. We spend some time discussing how we should prepare for future conflicts. He says the current war in Ukraine provides some good examples of how combat has evolved with smaller actors able to challenge larger armies. TAKEAWAY: “The people that are most interested in avoiding war are the ones who have to fight it.”

Lt. Gen. Ben Hodges served in the military for 38 years. He has been making appearances in Pennsylvania including the Midtown Scholar Bookstore and the U.S. Army War College in Carlisle.  Hodges most recently published a book called Future War and the Defense of Europe. “I wanted to write a book that would help wake people up about what needed to be done. And to be honest, as a, somewhat of an amateur historian myself, I mean, that's part of your professional education is looking at, past wars. And how did we get where we got. I never wanted to be accused at some point of somebody saying, hey, you were the commander, and you never told us that we were unprepared, or you never told us that we were not ready.” He started and ended his career in Germany. In 1981, he was a lieutenant during the height of the Cold war in West Germany. “My last three years in the Army, I was the commanding general of U.S. Army Europe. So bookended in Europe. I served one year in Korea as a young officer. I did, two tours in Iraq, first as a brigade commander and 101st Airborne Division, and then second time as a staff officer, the chief of operations, for Multinational Corps Iraq in Baghdad. And then I did, a 15-month tour in Afghanistan in 2009 and ten, where I was director of operations. But I also served in the Pentagon three different times, as working in what we call Army congressional liaison, helping explain, the Army's requirements to the Congress, to our oversight committees, as well as answering questions from, members of Congress on constituent issues or from oversight committees.” His last assignment was as Commander of the U.S. Army in Europe. A big threat he believes Europe is facing is complacency. You know, since the end of World War Two and with the creation of NATO, there had not been any land war in Europe except for in the 90s with the breakup of the former Yugoslavia. And then you had conflict between Bosnia, Serbia, Croatia. And NATO was able to step in and help implement the Dayton peace accord. So, except for that, there hadn't been a conflict in Europe. So, people became complacent.”    Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Removing tanks and transitioning from artillery to rocket units were just the first part of the plan. Standing up Marine Littoral Regiments (MLR), as part of naval expeditionary force, enables greater mobility, sustainability, and operations in the maritime domain, giving commanders greater options for sea denial operations. In the eighth and final episode of our Future Wars season, we discuss the sci-fi classic The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) alongside the b-movie stunner Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956).Alas we have come to the finale of our Future Wars cycle. It has been a long season with a super-sized eight episode run. Sci-fi is often a real bummer. Most of the movies we covered this season depicted humanity's future as a nightmarish dystopia. Here we trace back the genre to its roots. The Day the Earth Stood Still established many sci-fi genre conventions while Invasion of the Body Snatchers brilliantly depicted the nebulous unease that took over American domestic life in 1950s. The start of the Cold War did a real number on Americans. The real threat of nuclear annihilation doused the tranquil domesticity of new suburbia in caustic self-doubt and a deep fear of outsiders. But whereas more recent Future War films demonstrated the totalizing destruction of AI, aliens, or ourselves, these films from the 1950s had less fatalistic finales. Perhaps the actual threat of destruction gave them reason to think of an imagined way out.

Nearly two years have passed since Russia invaded Ukraine. In the lead-up to the war, European states largely agreed on the importance of supporting Russia, but disagreed about the optimal form—and scale—of that support. In many ways, the invasion served an extraordinary unifying function within Europe and strengthened the trans-Atlantic alliance. But what is the state of those relations now? And where does European defense policy stand after two years of war? To explore those questions, we're joined in this episode by Ravi Agrawal, editor-in-chief of Foreign Policy, and retired Lieutenant General Ben Hodges, the former commanding general of US Army Europe and coauthor of the book Future War and the Defence of Europe.
