Church Killers - Assumptions and Avoidance

In this months episode Andy goes into depth about one of the big church killers: Assumptions & Avoidance. Show notes for this ep will be below.Check us out!WebsiteInstagramShow Notes:Let's start with a guiding scripture from Proverbs 4:7: 'The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding.'This verse reminds us of the importance of seeking understanding in all aspects of our ministry. Let's delve into this topic with open hearts and minds."The Power of AssumptionsAssumptions are beliefs we accept as true without proof. In the context of our churches, assumptions can be particularly dangerous. For example, we might assume that everyone understands the church's vision or that conflicts among team members will resolve themselves. However, these assumptions can lead to significant issues such as miscommunication, misunderstandings, and ultimately, a breakdown of trust and unity within those working together.Henry Winkler once said, 'Assumptions are the termites of relationships.' Just like termites can silently destroy a structure from within, assumptions can erode the foundation of our church relationships."Overcoming AssumptionsTo overcome assumptions, we need to focus on active communication, education, and building trust.First, we must regularly share our vision and goals with the Team and encourage feedback and questions. This ensures that everyone is on the same page.Second, we should provide clear explanations and training, making sure everyone understands their role and the bigger picture. Finally, building trust is crucial. We must create an environment where members feel heard and valued.James 1:19 advises, 'My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry.' Listening actively and responding thoughtfully are key to dismantling assumptions. There is a great illustration I often use that has a line along the top of the page and one at the bottom. The top line is expectation and the bottom is communication - The gap in the middle is frustration. The only way to close the gap is move CommunicationThe Danger of AvoidanceNow let's discuss avoidance. Avoidance is the act of deliberately ignoring or evading issues. In our churches, this might look like avoiding difficult conversations, or ignoring conflicts with team or sin within the congregation. The impact of avoidance can be devastating. Unresolved issues tend to fester and grow, leading to a decline in both spiritual and relational health.Bishop T.D. Jakes wisely said, 'What you don't confront won't change.'Avoidance prevents healing and growth, and can lead to further division and dysfunction.ConclusionI'd like to leave you with a thought from Simon Sinek, a renowned author and inspirational speaker, who said,'Leadership is not about being in charge. It's about taking care of those in your charge.'This quote perfectly encapsulates the essence of addressing assumptions and avoidance in our churches. This approach not only strengthens the individual relationships within the church but also builds a resilient, united community that reflects the love and grace of Christ. Let's commit to being leaders who truly take care of those in our charge, addressing the issues that threaten our unity and working together to build a stronger, healthier church.

Series: Guard the TreasureTitle: How do we shepherd our flock well?Scripture: 2 Timothy 2:14-19; John 10:1-15 NIVBottom line: We guard (pass on) the gospel by shepherding our flock well.INTRODUCTIONCONTEXTSERMON OUTLINECONCLUSIONNOTESQUESTIONS TO CONSIDER OUTLINESDISCUSSION QUESTIONSMAIN REFERENCES USEDINTRODUCTIONShrek the SheepHistoric Vids@historyinmemes On XThis is Shrek. He was just your everyday, average, run-of-the-mill Merino sheep living in South Island, New Zealand when he decided to escape from his enclosure and make a break for it to some nearby caves. He managed to live on his own for 6 years before he was eventually tracked down by his owner John Perrian, who had this to say when he finally found him: "He looked like some biblical creature."While some sheep breeds naturally shed their wool, like Bighorn sheep in North America, Merino sheep never do. Their wool will continue to grow until it completely engulfs them and even impairs their vision (what you would call "wool blind"). Domesticated sheep have evolved based on the way humans have groomed them for thousands of years. The earliest domestication of sheep dates back to 11,000 BCE in ancient Mesopotamia, where they were primarily used for meat, milk, and wool. After 6 years without a shave, Shrek had enough wool on his body to produce 20 suits for large men. In total, his fleece weighed 60 pounds.Shrek's fleece was shaved off on national television and then auctioned off to support medical charities for children. He even got to meet the Prime Minister and has since been depicted in several children's books.Sadly, Shrek passed away in 2011 at the age of 16.One powerful image in scripture is that of the good shepherd who takes care of his sheep well. He knows them by name and protects them fully even if it costs him his life. Read John 10:1-15This kind of care is rare in life. It's rare in church life too. Yet this is what God calls us to. Starting at home, God calls parents to shepherd their flock (family) to follow the good, great and chief shepherd Jesus Christ. How are we doing? It doesn't seem like we're doing this very well. Church Growth? In 2023, the American church is struggling:Churches in decline = 54%Churches stable = 12%Churches growing = 33%Therefore, only 1/3 of churches in America are growing. The Church in America is becoming more and more partisan.Billy Graham endorsed Richard Nixon in his bid for the White House. You may have heard of Watergate and the scandal that led to Richard Nixon resigning for fear of being impeached. Billy Graham later shared that he regretted endorsing a political candidate. He realized that while you can the church through a partisan lense, that only leads to short-term growth and not necessarily the kind of growth that matters. There is a trend for churches (left and right leaning) to double down on the partisan issues that are part of the culture war to grow their church. This is short-sighted and I believe will lead to long-term harm to the kingdom.Sharing Our Faith“Yet the most dramatic divergence over time is on the statement, “Every Christian has a responsibility to share their faith.” In 1993, nine out of 10 Christians who had shared their faith agreed (89%). Today, just two-thirds say so (64%)—a 25-point drop.” -Barna.org I share these to say that we're not guarding the treasure like we used to in America. While Paul speaks to Timothy as an Apostle to a pastor, the principles apply to all Christians who believe that they also have the responsibility to guard the treasure by shepherding the flock. Based on the above Barna research, only 2/3rds of Christians believe this is their responsibility down from 90% in the 1990s.Paul writes to Timothy, the shepherd (pastor) of the flock (church) in Ephesus, on how to shepherd them well. He has summed it up in the key verse that Timothy is to guard the treasure (gospel/good news). We are called to do this in our own context. This is hard. It includes suffering and testing. Will we persevere? That's the question, isn't it. We can in Christ. But will we?CONTEXT“Certainly, I'm happy to discuss 2 Timothy with you from the perspective of someone with extensive experience in Christian ministry and theological training. As a fellow minister of the Gospel, grounded in sound exegesis and hermeneutics, you'll understand the profound wisdom and pastoral guidance contained in this epistle. The apostle Paul's second letter to Timothy carries a sense of solemnity and urgency, as he imparts his final instructions to his beloved spiritual son. Having fought the good fight and kept the faith, Paul knew his departure was imminent. He seized this opportunity to exhort Timothy to remain steadfast in the face of sufferings, false teachings, and apostasy that had already begun infiltrating the church.Central to this epistle is the call to endure hardship as a good soldier of Christ Jesus (2:3). Paul uses vivid metaphors—the soldier, athlete, and hardworking farmer—to underscore the discipline, single-mindedness, and perseverance required in gospel ministry. He charges Timothy to guard the gospel as a sacred trust, contending earnestly for the faith once delivered to the saints.Paul's prophetic warnings about the rise of false teachers, characterized by arrogance, greed, and spiritual deception, ring as true today as they did then. His antidote? A clarion call to remain rooted in the inspired Scriptures, which are profitable for teaching, reproof, correction, and training in righteousness (3:16).No discussion of 2 Timothy would be complete without revisiting the immortal words of 2:1-2—perhaps the apostolic succession passage par excellence. Here, Paul solemnly charges his protégé to entrust the gospel to faithful men who will be qualified to teach others also. This multi-generational transfer of truth encapsulates the great commission's essence. As seasoned ministers, we can surely resonate with Paul's poignant reflections, his tender affection for his spiritual offspring, and his longing to see the torch of biblical truth carried forth. May we, like Timothy, fan into flame the gift of God within us, unashamed of the gospel's testimony.” -Claude.ai SERMON I. Remind one another how to guard the good news.A. Standing tall, not ashamed of publicly following Jesus Christ.B. Passing on the good news that you've received from God through others to reliable people who will pass it along to others. Do soIntentionallyConsistentlyEquippedC. Persevering through the tests and suffering and so finish approved by God.As a good soldierAs a dedicated athleteAs a hardworking farmerAs a faithful shepherd (14)D. Keeping to the pattern of sound instruction E. Resting in the resurrectionsThe spiritual resurrection we have in Christ from second birthThe bodily resurrection we will have when we're glorified in Christ (at our death or his second coming)CONCLUSIONI've often described Christians as canals that are conduits of God's love. And there's truth in that. But this reservoir picture is even better. -DarienIf you are wise, therefore, you will show yourself a reservoir and not a canal. For a canal pours out as fast as it takes in; but a reservoir waits till it is full before it overflows, and so communicates it's surplus. We have all too few such reservoirs in the Church at present, though we have canals in plenty... They (canals) desire to pour out when they themselves are not yet inpouredThey are readier to speak than to listenEager to teach that which they do not knowMost anxious to exercise authority on others, although they have not (yet) learned to rule themselvesLet the reservoir of which we spoke just now take pattern from the spring; for the spring does not form a stream or spread into a lake until it is brimful.... Be filled yourself, then, but discreetly, pour out your fullness... Out of your fullness help me if you can; and, if not, spare yourself! - Bernard of ClairvauxThe question I want you to consider is, Do you think you personally have the responsibility to guard the treasure by passing on the good news to those who are far from God but close to you? Or do you think it's primarily the responsibility of the local church on your behalf? I would go with the former. Because the great commission and Paul in 2 Timothy makes it clear that, as the Church, we're to guard this treasure together. Bottom line: We guard (pass on) the gospel by shepherding our flock well. What is God saying to me right now? What am I going to do about it? Write this down on a sheet of paper. What I hear you saying, Lord, is ___________________.[my name] is going to believe/do __________________________________________________ as a result. Finally, share this with your Home or Mission group this week when you gather as a testimony about what God is doing in your life. You don't have to get too specific to give him praise.PrayNOTESSpiritual vs bodily resurrection “You make an excellent point. The New Testament does teach about both a spiritual resurrection that occurs at conversion as well as a future bodily resurrection for believers. On the spiritual resurrection:- Ephesians 2:4-6 speaks of believers being "made alive" and "raised up" with Christ spiritually when they put their faith in Him.- Colossians 2:12-13 refers to believers being "raised with Him through faith" when they were spiritually dead in sins.- This spiritual resurrection represents being transferred from death to new life in Christ. And on the future bodily resurrection:- 1 Corinthians 15 and 1 Thessalonians 4 give extensive teaching on the bodily resurrection of believers at Christ's return.- This will involve receiving glorified, imperishable bodies fashioned like Christ's resurrection body.- It is the culmination of the believer's redemption - both soul and body made new.So you are absolutely right that there is both a present spiritual dimension of resurrection for the believer's soul/spirit at conversion, as well as a promised future bodily resurrection still to come. Paul upholds both of these resurrection truths. The error of Hymenaeus and Philetus seems to be denying or reducing the future bodily resurrection aspect, which was a central hope of the gospel. Thank you for raising that important clarification. The New Testament holds both the spiritual and bodily dimensions of resurrection together.” -Claude.ai Gangrene"Sure, I can explain what gangrene is in a way a 7th grade boy would understand.Gangrene is basically when a part of your body starts to die and rot away. It's really gross and can be super dangerous if not treated quickly.Imagine you get a really bad cut or wound, and instead of healing normally, it starts turning an ugly greenish-black color. The skin around it gets all mushy and smells terrible, like something that's been left out to rot for weeks. That's gangrene setting in.It happens when the blood flow to that area gets cut off, usually because of an infection. Without fresh blood bringing oxygen and nutrients, that part of your body just starts to decay and die right on you. It's like it's being eaten away from the inside out by bacteria. If gangrene is allowed to spread too far, it can get into your bloodstream and make you really sick, even killing you if not stopped. Sometimes the only way to stop it is by cutting off the dead, rotting part - like having to amputate a toe, foot or even a whole leg if the gangrene gets too bad. It's nasty stuff that you definitely don't want happening to your body. Keeping any cuts or wounds clean and watching for signs of infection is important to avoid getting gangrene. If you ever see signs of it, you'd need to get to the doctor right away before it spreads too far.“ -Claude.ai Good summary of 2:14-19:“2 Timothy 2:14-19 is a poignant exhortation from Paul to Timothy regarding the grave responsibility of rightly handling the word of truth. Let me summarize the key points:Verses 14-15 - Paul charges Timothy to keep reminding the believers not to quarrel about words, as it leads to the ruin of the hearers. Instead, he should diligently present himself as a workman approved by God, rightly dividing the word of truth. This underscores the minister's duty to accurately exposit Scripture without distortion.Verse 16 - He warns against engaging with irreverent babble and opposition to the truth, as it only leads to further ungodliness. Ministers must avoid profane chatter masquerading as deep truth.Verses 17-18 - Paul cites the example of Hymenaeus and Philetus, whose teaching spread like gangrene, upsetting the faith of some by claiming the resurrection had already occurred. This illustrates how seemingly small errors can metastasize into damning heresies.Verse 19 - In the midst of such threats, Paul provides assurance that the firm foundation of God stands sure, sealed with this inscription: "The Lord knows those who are His," and "Let everyone who names the name of the Lord depart from iniquity." While apostasy abounds, God preserves His elect, calling them to holy living. In summary, this passage emphatically calls ministers to diligent, precise, and reverent handling of God's Word while fleeing from profane speculations that shipwreck the faith. It balances a sober warning about insidious false teaching with the comforting truth that God sovereignly preserves His church amid such threats.” -Claude.ai QUESTIONS TO CONSIDERWho is God?What has he done/is he doing/is he going to do?Who am I? È ora di imparare un po' di "fake it until you make it“. E di ascoltare questo episodio. Impara a darti il valore che ti meriti, ogni giorno. Series: Guard the TreasureTitle: How to treat your leadersScripture: 1 Timothy 5:17-25 NIV; 1:3-7Bottom line: We care for our leaders best through rewards, discipline and wise selection. INTRODUCTIONCONTEXTSERMON OUTLINECONCLUSIONNOTESOUTLINESDISCUSSION QUESTIONSMAIN REFERENCES USEDINTRODUCTIONEven today, the day after Iran fired over a hundred missiles and drones at Israel, their prime minister is under fire from many calling for his ouster. Among legitimate critiques are character assassination attempts designed to slander or just take down that leader. This, unfortunately, is common for leaders today whether we're talking the federal government or the local school board. But what about leaders in the church? Paul left Timothy in Ephesus on his behalf to confront false teachers and to call out those who are behaving sinfully. He is also to make sure that leaders are rewarded and chosen wisely as well. This is what we will deal with today. As far as our church is concerned, we are an autonomous, non-denominational church led by a team of 5 elders (aka pastors, both lay and paid). They are the position we're talking about today. How do we treat them? Let's see how Paul answers that question. SERMON OUTLINE (based on the Outline Bible):SECTION OUTLINE FIVE (1 TIMOTHY 5)Paul gives advice concerning older and younger men, older and younger women, widows, and church elders.I. THE PEOPLE (5:1-16): Paul gives advice concerning church members.II. THE PREACHERS (5:17-25): Paul's advice concerning church elders.A. Elders in general (5:17-22, 24-25)1. They are worthy of double honor (5:17-18).So in summary, "double honor" indicates these faithful elders should receive both material support as well as the utmost respect and appreciation from the church body. This ensures they are properly cared for and esteemed for their service.2. They must never be unjustly accused (5:19-20, 24-25).3. They must be impartial (5:21).4. They must be proven before being ordained (5:22a).5. They must keep themselves pure (5:22b).B. Timothy in particular (5:23): "Drink a little wine for the sake of your stomach because you are sick so often."CONCLUSIONI can tell you there have been plenty of times in the past 18 years when I've had contentious conversations with other elders about how we should lead this church. There have been times when I've been slandered, misunderstood, and called out. Sometimes legitimately too. Bottom line: We care for our leaders best through rewards, discipline and wise selection. I can tell you from personal experience, Paul's advice here is sound and works. Ultimately, he's simple giving us God's words on the subject. We would be foolish to ignore them.PrayNOTESLet's ask some summary questions:Q. What do I want them to know?A. How to reward, discipline and choose your elders.Q. Why do I want them to know it?A.

Doing the Unthinkable! In this week's episode of Choosing Happy Podcast, Heather Master, the host, discusses the concept of doing the unthinkable or stepping out of one's comfort zone. She shares personal experiences of making bold choices and leaps of faith, for instance, moving to South Africa with very short notice and attending training in India against social norms and odds. She discusses the fear and challenges of live streaming as another example of facing an unthinkable situation. Heather also talks about the mindset needed to conquer the unthinkable by staying in the state of flow, letting go of overthinking, and letting the mind wander into the unexplored domain. She discusses an exercise from the Magician's Way (William Whitecloud), about a straw passing through a potato to illustrate absolute faith and state of unthinking. She challenges the listeners to step out of their comfort zones and do something unthinkable; she offers a special coaching offer for the month.Timestamps:00:00 Introduction to Doing the Unthinkable01:57 Personal Experiences of Leaping into the Unknown02:19 The Power of Intuition and Trusting Your Gut03:07 The Impact of Doing the Unthinkable04:26 The Unthinkable in Everyday Life05:11 Overcoming Personal Limitations07:46 The Unthinkable in Business and Personal Growth09:29 The Power of Unthinking and Flow State13:38 Practical Exercise: The Potato and the Straw15:03 Creating Opportunities by Doing the Unthinkable15:44 Special Coaching Offer and ConclusionI do hope you find this episode useful. On this week's show Ara discusses the addition of some inexpensive acoustic panels to his recording room and we have a listener review of the Sofabaton X1 Smart Remote. We also read your emails and take a look at some of the week's news. News: Apple TV+ ups monthly subscription to $9.99 YouTube Has Around 1.5 Million ‘NFL Sunday Ticket' Subscribers, Will Lose Over $1.2 Billion This Season YouTube TV lagging, ruining Sunday Ticket viewing for NFL fans Netflix's New Ad Chief Touts Growth to 15 Million Users Other: CSS Audio for your DIY Speaker Kits Sonic Acoustics Panels $25-30 for a 12 pack Hex Shape 14" X 12" X 0.4" No adhesive included.  Simple Installation Amazon has plenty of acoustic panels to choose from including many with decorative prints. The entire treatment cost me $100. Sofabaton X1 Smart Remote Control I was looking for a product for my father-in-law to simplify the 3 remotes needed to control his TV, cable, and Roku. The Sofabaton is described on Amazon as “The most advanced X1 universal remote comes with a hub that can control most of your home entertainment devices. The powerful database is compatible with up to 500,000 IR & Bluetooth devices, From your TV, and gaming console, to your AV receiver and Blu-Ray, even your Philip Hue, Sonos Speaker.” At the time of purchase it was $189.99. Here are my thoughts on the product. Packaging / Presentation The packaging was nicely done, similar to what you expect from a high end phone...each of the included components nestled neatly in their allotted spots. Remote Description The remote is narrow, about 2 “ x 7 1⁄2 “ long. It's a matte black finish all the way around with a slightly rubberized feel to it. The screen itself is relatively small - a little less than 2”x 1 1⁄2 . As you would expect with that size, the button layout is minimal. It has a scroll wheel - up, down, left, right - and basic buttons below such as volume, channel, etc. The buttons are lit for night viewing or a dark theater which is a nice feature. The included hub is a glossy black and about the size of a glass coaster or a deck of cards. Also included are 3 infrared blasters - one single and one with 2 blasters on 1 wire. Lastly, there is a power adapter for the hub and another USB-C cable to charge it. Programming Programming has to be done via the sofabaton app on your phone. You must link the hub and remote together, then add your devices. They are searchable if you don't know your model numbers. If you know your exact model, obviously that will speed things up. I didn't have to, but the Sofabaton remote can learn your device, or you can contact customer support and ask them to add your device if necessary. Once that is done, it will confirm your power configuration for that device. For example, does your device have a separate on/off switch. Once that is done you can add Activities , like Watch TV or Play Music. I made a “watch tv “ activity. This macro turns on the TV, soundbar, and Roku to the correct input. After the commands are finished the remote controls the Roku and volume on the soundbar. Performance To summarize my experience, in a nutshell I must say there is a bit of a learning curve. I am used to using 3 different remotes. I know what I need to do. It took a while to get everything dialed in right. I had to experiment with the IR blasters and move them around to get a good signal to the device.  When syncing the Hub I needed to try again by re-pairing with the button on the back. Adding devices took a while. I thought it was stuck because upon loading a device, it seemed like I lost my wi-fi connection until I realized it was just loading all the device info. When you finish an activity and something doesn't work, there is an option on your app to repair it. You can reconfigure any of the buttons to do what you want them to do. I made one of the colored buttons on the bottom to go right to the TV sleep menu. After you make a change it'll sync to the remote. After using it for roughly 2 weeks I feel more comfortable with it. I would get confused with the clicker wheel which in turn navigates the screen on the remote and the up/down left/right enter button in the middle which operates the device itself. The back arrow button at the top right that's for going back to activities, devices, or settings on the remote isn't easily reachable. I also learned I cannot turn on my PS5 via bluetooth because Sony doesn't allow third party vendors to access it via bluetooth. There is a workaround by having the activity switch to the playstation HDMI input, which will turn it on. With my setup this isn't necessary because the controller turns it on anyway and it automatically switches. ConclusionI would say this isn't for everyone because there is a long set up process and many potential bugs/issues along the way. If you're easily frustrated, not willing to put in the time to set it up correctly and allow yourself an adjustment period, this is not the remote for you. With that said i think this remote IS for many people of the HDTV and Home Theater podcast family. It's a nice blend of “higher than average knowledge” of home theater, but not so high that you need a PHD in software engineering to figure it out. I hope this helps and I'd be happy to assist anyone if they have further questions.

In order to continue, we need your help. Consider becoming a paid subscriber and show your support for as little as $5/month by clicking subscribe at gooddistinctions.comIn today's episode, we will take a quick walk through the Nicene Creed to examine what Catholics believe! Of course, the Catechism of the Catholic Church does a much better job than I will do here. And there are books that provide an even deeper dive. My goal here is to provide a 30,000 foot view of the Nicene Creed, the Symbol of Faith. The Creed has been referred to from ancient times as a Symbolon. The Greek word Symbolon means to “throw together” - the Creeds, as Symbols of Faith - draw the followers of Christ together in like belief. Scott Hahn, in his book on the Creed, refers to the recitation of the Nicene Creed at Holy Mass during the Liturgy of the Word as analogous to receiving Holy Communion during the Liturgy of the Eucharist. In our public recitation of belief, we identify ourselves boldly as Christians in union with those around us and all those who have come before. The Niceno-Constantinopolitan CreedThe Nicene Creed, technically called the Niceno-Constantinopolitan Creed, is professed every Sunday at Mass in the Latin Rite of the Catholic Church. In the Eastern Rites of the Catholic Church and in our separated Orthodox brethren, this same Creed is professed in its original formulation. The only difference between the Creed of the East and West is the later addition of the phrase “and the Son” to the paragraph on the procession of the Holy Spirit. Unfortunately, this disagreement has caused great difficulty and division between Eastern and Western Christianity. The Nicene Creed arose from the first two ecumenical councils of the Church. The first ecumenical council is the First Council of Nicaea in 325 A.D. and the second is the Council of Constantinople in 381 A.D. This Creed is ancient and it has preserved the faithful from a variety of heresies for over 1,600 years. To understand it is to understand what we believe as Catholics.Walking through the CreedLet's take a quick walk through the Creed and try to understand it a bit more in depth. Of course, each word in the phrase is packed with meaning and endless depth. Truly, the reality of our Faith is that we are diving into the mysteries of an infinite God. So, there is always more to learn.Paragraph 1 – God the FatherI believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. We believe in one God in three Persons. We do not believe in three gods. Our one God is not only our king and Lord, He is our Heavenly Father. We are His adopted son or daughter through Baptism. He created everything that we can see, but He also created all the things that we cannot see. For example, we believe in the angels, in our own souls, and in demons. God is Lord over all of it and has all might. Even though He is tremendously powerful, our God and Father draws us into a relationship with Him and invites us to share eternal blessedness in another invisible reality: Heaven.Paragraph 2 – The Lord JesusI believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven,The Second Person of the Blessed Trinity is the Word of God, the Son of God. This Word of God, Jesus Christ, proceeds from the Father. He was “born” and “begotten” but not made. This is a mystery that is very difficult to understand. Much ink has been spilled in theology on how Jesus can be both God and man. In other words, Jesus is fully God and He is eternal, just as the Father is eternal. This paragraph emphasizes that there is one God but the Father is nonetheless distinct as a Person from the Person of the Son. Though distinct Persons, these Persons share in the one metaphysical “substance” of the Godhead. This is what the word “consubstantial” means - the Son being of one substance with the Father. In others, the Person of the Son and the Person of the Father share in the one, same Divine Nature. The Council Fathers went to great lengths to combat the Arian heresy which claimed that Jesus was created and was not truly God. We believe that Jesus is fully God and fully man. As the Word of God, He has existed forever and will always exist. He proceeds from the Father as God from God and Light from Light, true God from true God. I will go into more detail on this in the fifth paragraph on the Holy Spirit. There is also the realization that it is through the Word of God that all things were made. God reveals to us in Genesis God speaks in order to create. He says, “Let there be light.” And there was light. Jesus Christ, the Word of God, was sent on a mission by the Father to come down from heaven in order to redeem humanity and offer us salvation.Paragraph 3 – The Incarnation and The Virgin Maryand by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man.By the free choice of Mary, our Mother, and by the power of the Holy Spirit, the Word of God took on flesh. Jesus Christ, the uncreated Word through which all things were made, condescended to share in our humanity. The almighty God emptied Himself and took on the form of a slave, to use the language of St. Paul.In the Latin Rite, there is a tradition of bowing during this paragraph in honor of the Incarnation. During the Liturgies for Christmas and the Feast of the Annunciation, we kneel down during this phrase when we recite the Creed. In the Roman Missal of 1962 and before, this practice of kneeling happens at every single Mass during the Last Gospel when the phrase “the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us” from John chapter 1 is uttered. If you have attended the Latin Mass, then you will be familiar with hearing the words “et Verbum caro factum est” and genuflecting.  The Incarnation is literally the “enfleshment” of Jesus; it is what we celebrate at Christmas. This paragraph marks one of the most important moments in human history. Our God became one of us.Paragraph 4 – The Paschal MysteryFor our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven  and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. This paragraph is directly connected to the previous. Jesus became man in order to accomplish the work of our salvation. It was for each of us that Jesus was crucified. The Council Fathers include “under Pontius Pilate” to show that this was an historical reality. It really happened. So too, Jesus truly rose from the dead on the third day after being buried.Forty days after rising from the dead, He lifted Himself up into Heaven in a mysterious fashion and He now reigns in Heaven as King at the right hand of the Father. We believe that He will come again in glory. This is what we call the Second Coming. At the second coming of Christ, we will all be judged; everything we have done will be laid bare and true justice will be accomplished. This second coming will result in the passing away of the old Heaven and the old Earth and the establishing of Jesus' everlasting kingdom.Paragraph 5 – The Holy SpiritI believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one God in three Persons. The third Person of the Trinity is the Holy Spirit, who we also rightly call Lord and the giver of life. God breathed life into the first man, after all. This holy breath of God is the Spirit which gives life and sustains life. He is glorified and loved as God, along with the Father and the Son. We believe that the Holy Spirit, before the Incarnation as well as after, inspired the prophets. The Trinity is the mystery of God, as He is. It is difficult to wrap our minds around this mystery in any meaningful way. Our metaphors are usually material, like a three-leaf clover or the states of water as ice, liquid, or vapor, and because they are material, they always fall short. God is spiritual, not material. The best explanation I have heard of the Blessed Trinity is from St. Augustine's Analogy of the Mind. I will try my best to offer a simplified version. Though, it is far from simple. And remember, this is an analogy. In our own minds, we have intellect and will. We know things and act freely. When we learn or know things, we have a procession of the intellect. When we act freely upon ourselves or the world, we have a procession of the will. If we analogously apply this understanding to the “mind of God,” we see a procession of the intellect and a procession of the will. God is perfect and so these processions must be infinite and perfect. The procession of the intellect, within the mind of God, is God the Father's perfect knowledge of Himself. This perfect image of Himself is the Son. The Son, in return, perfectly loves the Father. God is love. Therefore, the procession of His will is perfect love which proceeds as the love shared between the Father and the Son. This is the Holy Spirit. However, we must understand that He does not proceed in time, as He is as eternal as the Father and the Son. Paragraph 6 – The ChurchI believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. The Church of Jesus Christ is His Mystical Body. Before being an institution of human beings, the Church is divinely constituted. In other words, the Church was begun by the action of the Holy Trinity, is sustained by the Holy Trinity, and is ordered towards the Holy Trinity. Therefore the Church is holy, even if the human beings who compromise it are not always holy. The Church is one because Christ is one. She is also one in her teaching, preaching, governance, and means of sanctification. The Church is catholic because the Church is “universal.” Catholic means universal - the Greek is kata holon which means “according to the whole.” And the Church is apostolic because Christ founded it upon the Apostles and apostolic teaching and continued in governance and preaching by their successors. We enter into this Church through the one Baptism of Christ, by which we are cleansed of original sin, are grafted into Christ, and become adopted sons and daughters of God.We believe that when Christ comes again, we will be reunited with our bodies in a glorified way, similar to Christ's resurrected Body. We do not know exactly what this will look like. And we look forward to the life of the world to come which is eternal blessedness in the company of the angels and the saints in constant praise and love of God. We will want for nothing and all suffering will be no more.Paragraph 7 - AmenAmen. And finally… amen! Amen means “yes,” “so be it,” and “I believe.” It is the only ending to the Creed that we can offer as human beings. God has revealed all He is and all that He has done for us, and our confident and faithful “Amen” is the response of our heart. We should also keep in mind that the Creed does not exist apart from the Sacred Liturgy. The entire Liturgy of the Word, and especially the Creed, is preparing us for the Liturgy of the Eucharist. In the Second Century, St. Justin Martyr writes in his Apologia that after the prayers of thanksgiving and consecration were finished by the priest, all responded by saying “Amen.” This is not simply a word found at the end of a conversation. It is not like saying, “Ok. Goodbye, God,” after a prayer is finished. St. Paul writes, “Otherwise, if you give thanks with your spirit, how can anyone in the position of an outsider say “Amen” to your thanksgiving when he does not know what you are saying?” So, it would seem that the word Amen packs a punch. But what does it mean?Amen is a Hebrew word which means “so be it.” St. Augustine translated it as “it is true (Latin: verum est).” In  a tract explaining the Mass from the Middle Ages, we read, “Amen is a ratification by the people of what has been spoken, and it may be interpreted in our language as if they all said: May it so be done as the priest has prayed (Catholic Encyclopedia, 1907).”It is custom in most of the Rites of the Catholic Church, both East and West, to say “Amen” after receiving Holy Communion. In the Missale Romanum of 1962, the priest says, “Corpus Domini Nostri Iesu Christi custodiat animam tuam in vitam aeternam, Amen (May the Body of our Lord Jesus Christ preserve your soul unto life everlasting. Amen).” So, even though the communicant does not say “Amen” like in the Missale Romanum of 1970, the priest has said “Amen” for them. The language of “Amen” seems to be like a contract. When two people enter into an agreement with one another, they may mark it with a handshake and say, “so be it” or “I agree.” Is that what is happening at Mass? Certainly, what we are entering into at Mass is far more important, meaningful, lasting, and beautiful. Perhaps more than a contract, the “Amen” shows us that the language of the Mass is that of a covenant. A contract can be broken. A covenant cannot be broken. When we approach our Lord Jesus Christ in the Holy Eucharist, we are approaching the Bridegroom as the Bride. We are uttering our wedding vows to the King of Heaven each time we receive Holy Communion. We are saying, “I do” when we say “Amen.” The meaning of the word is very close to this understanding. We are using the language of marriage to show that we are accepting the Bridegroom into our body and soul to remain with us always. As husband and wife become one flesh in marriage, the communicant and our Lord become one in the Eucharist. “Communion” means “one with.” We are becoming more closely joined to the Lord in reception of Holy Communion. Every time we say “Amen” we should clearly state what we are doing. We are giving our assent of Faith. We are not saying “Okay” or “Sure”, we are saying “so be it.” Do we know what we are saying “yes” to? Do we know what we are entering into? Our “yes” to God cannot be half-hearted or wishy-washy. It must be sure and resolute, by His grace. Our Lord Jesus is a strong proponent of authenticity and resolution. We hear in the Book of Revelation: “So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth (Rev. 3:16).” And in the Gospel of St. Matthew: “Let what you say be simply ‘Yes' or ‘No'; anything more than this comes from evil (Mt. 5:37).” Let our Amen mean Amen. ConclusionI hope this brief reflection has been a help to you. Ideally, we will all continue to grow in our knowledge, love, and service of the Lord until the glorious day when we will see Him face to face in Paradise, God willing. Having the right belief on matters of doctrine is not a matter of triumphalism that we should lord over others. In humility and gratitude, we should accept this ancient formulation and symbolon and allow Jesus to enter us ever more fully into the heart and mind of the Church. If you have enjoyed this episode and feel that it has been a help to you, please share it on your own personal social media. For additional notes and resources check out Douglas' website.Mark 10:2-3, 10-12Jesus is quizzed. Where does he stand on the divorce issue?Mark indicates absolutely no exceptions!Don't read through filter of other passages (like 1 Cor or Matt). Mark was writing for a Roman audience. It is doubtful they had access to Matthew—if Matthew was even written yet—and the Jewish issues addressed in Matthew would not have been all that relevant to them.Matthew gives more information, alluding to the “any cause” divorces common in the 1st. Notice how Matthew differs from Mark 10:2-12: “I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for unchastity, and marries another commits adultery” (Matt 19:9).See a parallel in Mark 8:11-12 / Matt 12:39, where Mark indicates to exception, but Matthew does.Just as Mark doesn't give the whole story, neither does Matthew. We need to get behind the scenes. It's easy to draw incorrect conclusions if we don't realize the nature of gospel writing—abbreviation, arrangement, simplification. It won't do to just quote a passage and claim the Bible "means what it says." Rather, we need to be careful interpreters. It turns out that what appears to be both simple and absolute (Jesus' words on divorce in Mark 10) turns out to be neither absolute—there are exceptions—nor as simple as we may have thought. Back in those days, there were no law firms such as Jensen Family Law, and that is why topics such as divorces resided in grey areas.Matt 19:3-11Here's the backstory Matthew leaves out—as it would have been of little benefit to his readership.House of Shammai (50 BC – AD 30)Limited grounds for divorce to the four in Deut 24 and Exod 21.“The indecency of the matter” (the wording in Deut 24) they took to mean sexual infidelity.Their influence was waning in Jesus' day, though divorce for broken marriage vows (once the infidelity was proven in court) was still practiced up to 70 AD (when the Romans destroyed Jerusalem, along with its temple).By Jesus' day, no-fault divorce (“any cause”) was predominant. What's that?House of Hillel (110 BC – AD 10) – grandfather of Gamaliel, tutor of the apostle Paul.“Any cause” divorce. If your wife burned the dinner, or you no longer found her attractive, you can get a new one. This "no fault" divorce was often considered more righteous than Shammai's stricter ruling, since it brought less shame on the family. It was in the ascendant in Jesus' day. “Any cause” divorce was the new normal.Listen again to the question: “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any cause?” Is the question about legality of divorce? Of course not, since divorce is lawful—it's in the Torah. Or is the question about “divorce… for any cause”? No quote marks in original ancient languages.NET: “For any cause.” NJKV: “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for just any reason?” NASB: “for any reason at all.” NIV: “for any and every reason” (helpfully paraphrased) NLT: “Should a man be allowed to divorce his wife for just any reason?” “Just any reason” shows better understanding of the ancient disagreement than does “for any cause.”Asked where he stands on divorce issue: Liberal, any-cause? or Conservative, grounds-required?Jesus agrees with Shammaites (divorce must have grounds) and repudiates Hillelites.Yet he goes farther, pleading for return to spirit of God's original plan.“Jesus used the same terminology as the Shammaites, in the same context, at the same period, and in a debate where Shammaites or their rivals the Hillelites were present. We may therefore confidently conclude that… when the Shammaites said ‘except… for a matter of indecency' in the context of this debate about ‘any matter' divorces, they meant that Deuteronomy 24:1 allows no type of divorce except that for indecency. They did not mean that Scripture allows no divorce except that for indecency—because they allowed other divorces on the grounds in Exodus 21.” (David Instone-Brewer)Also, in commenting on Deut 24, Jesus is not ruling out remarriage. He does not explicitly state that a person can remarry after divorcing someone for marital unfaithfulness. Perhaps this is because it was assumed. In 1st C Judaism, if a person divorced another person for any reason (Hillel) or only for cause (Shammai), they were allowed to remarry. Shammaites disagreed with Hillelites, but recognized their marriages as valid, even if lamentable. No 1st century Jewish group prohibited remarriage after divorce. In the Roman world, remarriage was mandatory after 18 months; not to remarry was to break the law. Thus it would be quite strange if Jesus and Paul taught against remarriage.Nor is Jesus explicitly ruling out other grounds for divorce.Keep in mind:The language of Matt 19 is compact and simplified: all grounds v. specific grounds. That is the debate—whether no-fault divorce is allowed, not whether divorce is allowed.Mark 10 and Luke (16:18) are even more compact—no exceptions at all. In the Roman (Mark) and Greek (Luke) worlds, divorce was separation. It was easy and it did not afford protection to the vulnerable. The Jewish world (Matthew) was different. The Bible is easily misunderstood if we fail to take into account the nature of biblical language, or if we don't read these texts with an understanding of the background situation.Does this make us uncomfortable: the claim we need history, geography, and language to understand the text?Goal: to understand issues like the original recipients of the Scriptures. There are significant gaps in our knowledge of ancient world. Are we surprised there are some things in the ancient world we don't understand?Similarly, there are gaps in the theology of the Bible. In Scripture we don't have a developed theology of the afterlife, or the communion meal, or how often Christians assembled. The Bible has nothing directly to say about marijuana. And there's no comprehensive doctrine of marriage, divorce, and remarriage—which means we have homework to do if we want to come to informed conclusions.ConclusionI'm not saying we can't understand scripture unless we are theologians, or must know the biblical languages, or that the scriptures are generally murky, or self-contradictory.Quite the contrary: We can understand them, some quite easily and quickly, but others only with serious spadework.
