This week, we're talking about Atlanta's small, but fascinating German community - who they were, when they arrived and how they left their culture and legacies around the city. In 1890, the entire state of Georgia had only 1.78% of residents with foreign patronage and Atlanta's immigration story is really one that occurs post-1965 Immigration Act, but all that being said, there were small racial and ethnic communities from the founding of Atlanta in the 1840s. The very first Germans in Atlanta also happened to be the very  first Jewish residents. Lutheran Germans also made up the majority of Atlanta's community. On this week's PreserveCast, we are talking with Friederike Baer about her book Hessians: German Soldiers in the American Revolutionary War. We'll explore the untold stories of the Hessians and the profound impact they had in the American Revolution. Friederike Baer is Associate Professor of History and Division Head for Arts and Humanities at Pennsylvania State University, Abington College. Originally from Germany, Baer holds a Ph.D. in early American history from Brown University. Her research, which has been supported by organizations such as the American Philosophical Society, University of Michigan Clements Library, German Historical Institute in Washington, D.C., and German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), focuses primarily on the experiences of German-speaking people in North America in the periods of the War for American Independence and Early Republic. Among her publications are the books The Trial of Frederick Eberle: Language, Patriotism and Citizenship in Philadelphia's German Community, 1790-1830 (New York UP, 2008) and Hessians: German Soldiers in the American Revolutionary War (Oxford UP, 2022). Detlev Swoboda from Krefeld has lived in Perth, Australia, for over 40 years. The passionate cyclist now started in Launceston on Tasmania and then cycled from Melbourne to Perth. Unlike many other languages the German language makes a difference between male and female in nouns. Ricarda Reeck plays the Top 10 of the Middle Ages with her band Wayward. But not only that, she researches the historical background, how the songs were handed on, the lives of the minstrels and troubadours. She is concerned with the whole performance in the style of the period she is recreating, from the Middle Ages to the 16th and 17th centuries. Rebecca herself sings, plays the hurdy-gurdy, and also writes new songs in the style of the period. Her partner Nick sings and plays various historical wind instruments. On their CD Rata Fortunae, several other musicians are also involved. And the medieval festivals are also about the representation of the time in costumes and props, because the minstrels were entertainers who also juggled, told stories, performed puppet theatre and did acrobatics. - Ricarda Reeck spielt die Top 10 des Mittelalters mit ihrer Band Wayward. Daniela Mueller is an associate lecturer in German language at Univeristy Melbourne. Lena Velten works at a TV production company in Cologne. She tells us how, even during the Corona crisis, the reality TV productions she works on are carried out. So actually she has a dream job in a dream city. However, ever since she spent a year on a student exchange in Australia, Lena has dreamed of emigrating with her boyfriend and trying her luck here. - Lena Velten arbeitet bei einer Fernsehproduktionsfirma in Köln. For decades, Karl has been the heart and soul of Sydney's German Community, as President of the Club Concordia - Karl-Heinz Füsting war bis zu seinem kürzlichen Tod Präsident des Deutschen Klub Concordia in Sydney. Der Verstorbene war weit über die Grenzen seines Vereins bekannt, was schon dadurch deutliche wird, dass seiner Person auch im Parlament von NSW gedacht wurde. Eine, die Karl-Heinz Füsting gut kannte und mit ihm im Vorstand des Klubs zusammengearbeitet hat, ist Claudia Genuttis. Sie würdigt im folgenden Gespräch das Leben von Karl-Heinz Füsting.

Renate Thienel works as a neuroscientist at Newcastle University. As part of her research, she also deals with the topic of bilingualism and is raising her own daughter bilingually. Rouven Link from Flensburg has lived in Australia since 2016. He came to Melbourne to study Australia's refugee policy - and decided to stay on.
