We land on conclusions largely because of assumptions we have made. These are based on a bias. What are you assuming that makes THIS true? Bias is also the enemy of truth. We need to be willing to seek clarity to find truth. We must learn NOT to believe everything we think. In today's episode I examine how bias clouds our judgment in the context of seeking clarity of thought. We must recognize where our biases guide our conclusions if we hope to make rational decisions. Join me on the journey for clarity, NOT specifically on my path, but on the journey along your own path. I'll hold space for you while you explore for what you need to optimize and how. This is the focus of my coaching practice. I welcome a chance to chat with you about how I can help. Walk with me using one or all of these options: Take the GRIT Scale and see where you land. For what are you optimizing in 2023? For me it is for clarity. When we fall into the blame game we cloud our capacity to see with clarity. Our language patterns can be a means to recognize when we fall into this trap. Today the episode returns to the story of how language reveals and informs our mindset. I argue that when language reveals a victim mindset we may be using blame to cloud clarity, unintentionally of course! Join me on the journey for clarity, NOT specifically on my path, but on the journey along your own path. I'll hold space for you while you explore for what you need to optimize and how. Optimizing for Clarity requires not only paying attention but remaining in learning mindset. In this episode I revisit SOBs and consider the importance of challenging our own conclusions and perhaps biases. As leaders we must be mindful of not simply the message we send through our words and actions, but the message that is received. The actual message is the one that is received NOT the one that is intended. THIS was a critical lesson for me as a leader. When we fail to dig deeply enough before landing on a conclusion, the unintended consequences can cause irreparable harm. Join me on the journey for clarity, NOT specifically on my path, but on the journey along your own path. I'll hold space for you while you explore for what you need to optimize and how. What's your EXPLANATORY STYLE? It is good to know what it is so it doesn't negatively influence your capacity to deliver on that for which you seek to optimize. In this episode I explore it with the help of an old Johnny Cash song. Join me on the journey, NOT specifically on my path, but on the journey along your own path. Flow State is a profound state of being. A state of being that just may be key to me optimizing my clarity this year. For WHAT are you Optimizing in 2023? "Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world." - Albert Einstein For WHAT are you Optimizing in 2023? NOT, what are your goals but rather what is the means to achieving those goals. Focus on THAT and the path to the desired outcome will appear. I am optimizing for clarity. Clarity of vision and purpose to guide me through a difficult transition. Optimizing for clarity I suggest, will help me focus differently on exercising my curiosity and imagination effectively. I will continuously build questions and inquiries to fuel clarity. Questions like: what am I seeing? What am I missing in this picture? Who might be able to share a perspective that will increase my view? Join me on the journey, NOT on my path but your own. What is the best design for the 21st Century workplace? Who is equipped to answer this? NOT THE OLD GUARD, I submit. Who will take on the challenge an iterate and innovate us into a new workplace that recognizes the importance of valuing every voice in the interest of expanding engagement, collaboration and contribution? We seem to be arguing about in-office, remote or hybrid BUT the real innovation looks past this limiting thinking, if you ask me? I joined the workforce, for real, in the wild 80"s and was shocked at how it was still modelled on a military hierarchical model with org charts and command and control at its heart. HOW HAVE WE NOT MOVED COMPLETELY AWAY FROM THIS? Let's innovate for greater well-being and performance! How well do you know yourself? Is it human error that erodes feelings of well-being or is it the way most organizations respond to human error? In light of the recent Roger's Communication outage in Canada an analyst suggested we just need to design a response since human error is inevitable. What if the culture/leadership in which the human error happens is the real culprit? Sure, build contingencies but perhaps we need to realize it is the real or even perceived feelings of unfairness in organizations that result in the biggest problems? As a leader, take a hard look at yourself and your organization and ask yourself if you are creating an atmosphere that generates more human error than is necessary. Why are we so willing to be prisoners of our own thinking? Our patterns, habits and modes of thinking limit us; limit our capacity to grow, create and enjoy our life. Ask yourself: what it you could think more clearly by: 1st, recognizing signs of your limited thinking; 2nd, noticing your patterns and habits before they hijack you; and, 3rd, building a strategy to respond effectively with agency and self-awareness? What makes it so hard to accept full responsibility in the moment? Perhaps it requires practice? So practice. Reflect on mistakes thoroughly enough so you're prepared the next time you recognize a mistake, so you are equipped to own it immediately. It turns out leaders build trust when they openly accept responsibility. Ask yourself: Is it more important for me to be right or be seen to be right and confident or to build trust by owning my mistakes? How do good corporate governance practices ensure better outcomes and support overall individual and collective wellbeing? I'm re-reading Hannah Arendt these past few years. AMAZING how her thinking is relevant today. This week Canada's AG tabled a blistering report that actually related to some of my work with senior leaders. Good Governance in the small things can determine one's ability to lead successfully. Our wellbeing is only possible with bodily autonomy. In this episode I share the story of a woman who fought for women's full autonomy in the 19th Century. Ask yourself, am I fully being who I'm meant to be and do I know who that is, so I can take the steps to become who I want to be or should be". May all women realize their own self expression and all men realize there is no need to feel threatened by our desire to live our life on our terms. After all, men have been living on their own terms for, well, forever. I hope men, rather than trying to put women back in old boxes to control us, will see our fight for our autonomy as a reminder they can resist any unreasonable expectations too. Psychological Flexibility is a skill that generates and even breeds greater well-being. WellBeing may be accessible when we release our need or even obsession with certainty. Use the fear generated by uncertainty to make you better. In this episode I reflect on the uncertainty of our own mortality. In the time of the war in Ukraine and the continuation of the Pandemic, I consider my own mortality and experience with finding well-being in uncertainty. Today, how would you define your feeling of well-being? Is it enhanced by your choice to work/be alone or with others? If you could choose with whom and when you are engaging with others or free to work/be independent or on your own, would your feelings of well-being improve? In this episode I reflect on the results of a recent study about how choice (alone or in community) is fundamental to feelings of well-being. Ask yourself: How would I choose my work environment and circumstances to improve my feelings of well-being and what difference would it make? WellBeing is often a product of our choices and actions. Act, Measure and Evaluate; Adjust and Reiterate. Expressing affection for and even respect for another, expands feelings of well-being in you and them. Again I was inspired by the drama in Canada about the Convoy that has since left Ottawa. What drew otherwise law-abiding and reasonable Canadians to engage in sending a message. What attracted others, who wouldn't participate, to quietly support. What are the lessons to leaders? I refer to fringe in this episode. I am referencing the most hateful elements of this convoy: the misogynist, white supremacist, anti-semite and homophobic elements that cloaked themselves in the pain and anxiety of others. Those openly calling for the over-through of a democratically elected government. Ask yourself: How do I express respect for and affection for my colleagues so they are able to experience me as an ally and want to trust and engage with me? Our well-being is expanded by our experience of agency. This week I was inspired by observing, from a distance, the "Freedom" Convoy that has a few locations across Canada. As I post this I hear a few have been cleared but still the "movement" stands as an example of wherein a greater sense of agency may have made all the difference. How can I expand my feeling of agency and drop the feeling of a victim in the midst of a pandemic during which my life was so deeply disrupted? We are dedicating the month of January to discussing discipline and what it means to us. On this week's episode Lara, Mallory, and Makena break down the definitions of discipline, grit, productivity, and success. The group talks about how discipline can be synonymous with privilege and what that means for people who don't neatly fit into society's definition of success. Mallory vents about goals, Makena talks about how being labeled as disciplined became her identity as an athlete, and Lara challenges listeners to avoid using the term discipline to explain someone's achievement. The rest of this month's podcast episodes will be looking at discipline with a different lens. Make sure to listen to each so you can end the month by creating your own definition of discipline. Going Deeper Discussion What’s been a “silver lining” for you in these quarantined times? What do you want to hold onto from this time and carry with you? Parents, given the 5 Stages Of A Walk, what stage are you in right now? What stage is your favorite? When you get it wrong, what stage do you default to? Thinking through the 5 Stages, how were you parented? What stage did you receive the most of? What stage did you need more of? When you think about God, how do you most often view or experience Him: The Stroller Push God (Nurturer) The Tether God (Restraint) The Hike God (Pusher) The Forced Walk God (Demands Duty) The Stroll God (Friendship) 5. Do you believe that your Father in heaven longs to take walks with you “...in the garden, in the cool of the day”? Teaching Notes“Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the LORD is one. Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.” Deuteronomy 6:4-7Impress means to repeat or sharpen. The 5 Stages of a Walk:1. The Stroller Push is about NURTURE2. The Tether Walk is about RESTRAINT3. The Hike is about ADVENTURE4. The Forced Family Walk is about TIME5. The Stroll is about FRIENDSHIPThis is how we “sharpen” our children. Our goal through every stage is always love. How do we know what walk our kids most need right now? Our children need to grow on the GRIT SCALE. Tim Elmore, in his book Generation Z Unfiltered, writes that as parents we often: Risk too little Rescue too frequently Rave too quickly Reward too easily Who is God? The Stroller Push God (Nurturer) The Tether God (Restrainer) The Hike God (Pusher) The Forced Walk God (Wants our Time) The Stroll God (Friend) God is all of these But at just the right time, In just the right way, And He always does it in love. “{Our human fathers} disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, in order that we may share in his holiness. No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.”Hebrews 12:10-11 "Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the LORD God as he walking in the garden in the cool of the day,...” Genesis 3:8God wants to walk with you. All you have to say is “Sure. When you going?”
James Clear wrote an article titled: "The Science of Mental Toughness: Talent is overrated, mental strength is critical." It includes research proving that success is based more on grit than inherent ability or intellect. People who are passionate about something and persistent accomplish more. People who are committed to something in which they believe, and consistent in pursuing it, excel in it. Being strong or smart or both is helpful in the beginning, but is nearly always out paced by those who have grit, who test well on "the grit scale." This means daily routine, unwavering progress, and a "never quit" attitude. This is something we can work on. We can't all get stronger or smarter, at least not quickly. But we can max out out "Grit Scale" today by making a decision and building a routine that supports it. To learn how, check out today's episode.
Grit is up next on the Motivate Me Book Club challenge. We introduce University of Pennsylvania psychologist, Angela Duckworth, and her notion that the power of passion and perseverance are more important than talent alone. It’s called “grit”. The grittier a person is or becomes, the more successful that person ends up being according to her research. How gritty are you? Take the Grit Scale test. Can we acquire grit if we don’t have it already? Apparently there are two ways to do so! We are intrigued to say the least. Let’s read this book and see if there’s something in here that works for us. “Psychologists have spent decades searching for the secret of success, but Duckworth is the one who found it” - Daniel Gilbert, author of Stumbling on Happiness
Innovation Inside LaunchStreet: Leading Innovators | Business Growth | Improve Your Innovation Game
Do you ever wonder why some people succeed and some don’t — especially when they seem to start out on an even playing field? Well, that’s exactly what our Inside LaunchStreet guest, Angela Duckworth, wondered and took the time to research. She studies everyone from CEOs to West Point cadets. Can you guess the factor that led to those that made it and those that didn’t? It’s not intelligence, resources or skill. It’s grit. Turns out it’s more important that we think. What a great way to kick off 2019! Key Takeaways: [1:24] Tamara opens the show by letting listeners know that the most important ingredient to success is grit. It’s not skill, talent, or resources that help you achieve your goals. That means that we all have it! Angela digs deep into this topic, in her book, Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance. [4:03] You might be surprised to know that Angela could be a chef and not a psychologist. Her passion is cooking. [5:20] Angela defines grit as the combination of being really passionate at what you’re doing as well as persevering over extended periods of time. How can we attain grit? [9:10] Angela shares an experience about the quarterback, Steve Young. His dad was nicknamed Grit. He taught Steve the power of working really hard. Steve threw ten thousand practice spirals into the net to improve his passing game. His story included talent but also an enormous effort that’s hidden from view. [11:01] Tamara shares that we often put emphasis and admiration on what we think is a natural talent. But, it’s real grit that gets us to the end. Angela believes there are two reasons why it is dazzling to watch someone perform well — One: It truly is awesome to watch; Two: It is motivational to watch someone perform well. Angela and Tamara talk about Steve Jobs and Thomas Edison. [15:06] Angela speaks to the young people listening. She reminds them that excellence is not a gift, it’s earned. [15:50] Angela shares the story that opens her book. She talks about the competitive admissions at West Point. She embarked on a study to find out why candidates drop out in the first two months. She believes that they dropped out because, for the first time in their lives, they weren't the star of the team. She believes a lot of grit is not quitting on a bad day. Tamara discusses having the end in mind, and not getting wrapped up in the moment. [19:26] How do you measure grit in yourself? Angela developed a Grit Scale for research studies. But, anyone can take the grit scale for personal reflection. [23:08] If you’re a leader of a team, how do you apply grit to your team? [25:40] Change is so rapid, Tamara believes you have to have grit to adapt to the change. Angela points out the importance of encouraging the change but it’s also important to keep in mind the steadiness of the ship. [29:06] Find out if Angela was surprised to find out exactly how big of a player grit really is. She has learned that the story of success isn’t the one she thought of as a little girl. [31:46] Tamara challengers listeners to do one thing that would make each of us a little grittier. Come in a bit early, stay late, put a little extra effort in, give it a little more oomph. [32;03] Tamara talks about an article that discussed kids who are rewarded for the effort they put into their grades actually do better long term. Angela discusses growth mindset research done by Carol Dweck. When you praise the effort versus the outcome, you get a more effective resilient motivation. Get introduced to the term ‘process praise’ and the importance of it. [34:52] Angela reminds listeners to go out of your way to praise. Tamara rewards behaviors and not outcomes at Inside LaunchStreet. She talks about the importance of praising the risk. [36:54] Learn more and connect with Angela on Characterlab.org. It’s a nonprofit website, so everything is free on the site. [37:18] Is grit contagious? [39;28] Tamara reminds listeners that we don’t have to be on our A game all the time. We all have our good times and bad times. [42:20] Order Angela’s book today. [42:41] Angela’s final piece of advice for listeners is to always be working on your motivation. [43:22] Tamara loves that there’s something inside each of us to help make us better. Grit is important to innovation. It helps us push through and overcome the noes and obstacles.
