North St. Louis, MO native Craig James Mitchell has established himself in the intersection of storytelling, culture, and business for nearly 16 years as a Voiceover Artist, MC/Curator, Marketing Executive, and Community Builder. Since 2013, he has enhanced connections between purpose-driven brands and their respective communities under his creative and talent service, Craig Mitchell Effect LLC. His campaign, 'The People's Voice,' showcases his role in his creative network as a "mouthpiece for hustlers" who are shifting the world with their stories and experiences to curate the culture he wants to see with the gift of voice. Craig's voiceover journey began in 2015, when he initially provided scratch reads for pitch work at his former agency, Translation + United Masters LLC. Embracing their ethos of 'pushing culture forward' early in his advertising career, Craig carved a unique niche as a voiceover artist. His approach helps amplify stories and messages by infusing them with his infectious personality, genuine discernment, and innate tone and gravitas. These qualities deeply resonate with listeners, making him a go-to artist for his community of creatives. Under CM Effect, Craig has delivered storytelling magic for an impressive array of clients, including the NBA, NFL, Moët Hennessy, Thurgood Marshall College Fund, Footlocker, Statefarm, and Google, to name a few. In 2023, Craig was cast as the inspiring voice of Budweiser's "6 Degrees of Bud" nationwide Commercial Campaign, featuring fellow hometown hero Metro Boomin. Roc Nation subsequently called on Craig to reverently narrate Jay-Z's Tribute exhibit, "The Book Of Hov," celebrating the icon's career for the 50th year of Hip-Hop. He was then chosen to be the voice of Courageous Conversations Global's groundbreaking DWB Automobile concept, designed to protect Black drivers during routine traffic stops, stirring the entire advertising industry. And he's no stranger to immortalizing monumental moments – having narrated Nike's tribute film to the NBA's 75th Anniversary, leaving an indelible mark on audiences worldwide. Craig's impact extends beyond voiceover work. He is a true Master of Ceremony, fostering a sense of unity in any space through the universal language of music. This passion led him and his friends to co-found Melodies NYC, a community that uses music theory and their gifts to bring feeling and identity to various spaces across the city. His unique style of MCing and live community management has shaped unforgettable experiences like Brooklyn's favorite family reunion: Brown Sugar Bounce, Lavender & Velvet, Fun With Friends, Everyday Ppl, and many others. Outside of the spotlight, Craig is a dedicated advocate for his community. He serves on the board of the Creative Heritage Foundation, a role that allows him to support and elevate black creatives in St. Louis. This commitment is deeply rooted in his upbringing and education at Gateway HS and Alabama A&M University. Craig's ultimate goal is to inspire the next generation of creatives to be their best self, pursue their dreams, and think beyond their imagination. With a career that spans from the boardrooms of major brands to the airwaves of cultural phenomena, Craig Mitchell is a catalyst for disruption and a testament to the transformative power of storytelling. For decades, the NCAA's Academic Performance Program has sought to hold colleges across the country accountable to provide a quality education to their student-athletes. Yet, today, this program has come under fire for the way it treats historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs). Is it racist to hold HBCUs to the same academic standards as other colleges? What role should institutions of higher education play in serving the long-term interests of their athletes? In this episode, https://twitter.com/JohnnyCTaylorJr?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor (Johnny Taylor Jr.)—president and CEO of the Society for Human Resource Management—joins Naomi and Ian to discuss this issue and more. Johnny is an expert on issues pertaining to HBCUs. He used to lead the Thurgood Marshall College Fund—a non-profit organization supporting more than 300,000 students at HBCUs. Johnny notes that a vast majority of student athletes—even those from top-tier athletic schools—never go on to play professional sports, and academic standards are an essential method of holding colleges accountable to prepare their student-athletes for career success.  Later, Naomi, Ian and Johnny discuss why HBCUs continue to provide critical pathways to upward mobility for young black men and women who might otherwise miss out on opportunities for higher education. They also examine recent unsolicited donations from Mackenzie Scott and discuss why it will be important for additional support of these institutions to hold colleges accountable to allocate funding toward value-adding improvements.  Time stamps: 00:58 | What is the Academic Performance Program and why is it coming under fire? 06:22 | How do we understand claims of systemic racism in the NCAA? 08:55 | Should we be investing more resources into HBCU's? 11:00 | What is the ‘Value Proposition' of HBCU Institutions? 17:35 | The recent renaissance of HBCUs with notable graduates like Stacey Abrams, Raphael Warnock and Kamala Harris.

Mike asks the brothers a question in regards to the lack of trust of black people with black financial institutions and the brothers give their response and tips on how to avoid that mistrust. Tyrone then brings a topic conversation about taking your child out of school for a year to home school your child/children to teach them financial literacy. Each brother shared their take and provided their thought process behind it. HBCUs across America have had their annual homecomings canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the Thurgood Marshall College Fund decided to put on a event to fill the void and also to collect donations for all HBCUs and the brothers wanted to know will the event have the same turn out and support as a normal homecoming event would. Ty presents a situation he experienced which prompted him to ask the question to the brothers about facial hair in corporate America. They share their own experiences and provide tips on how to play the game to meet your ultimate end goal. Enjoy Episode 44. Listening is Learning!

The struggle to Play It Forward. Episode 109: A new study called The State of Opportunity in America by the Thurgood Marshall College Fund measures how America’s fragile and minority communities are faring during the pandemic and social unrest. The study found that education level plays a major factor in whether you will be unemployed during COVID-19. Some of the key findings of the study include: Those with less education were disproportionately affected by COVID-19 job losses; (those with less than a high school diploma experienced a 21.2% unemployment rate vs. a 8.4% unemployment rate for workers with a Bachelor’s degree or higher.) The pandemic and unrest over racism in society have further exposed existing inequity in higher education and the workforce. For example, survey data from the Strada Education Network show that black and Latino Americans are more likely than white Americans to have been laid off during the crisis, and to have changed or canceled their postsecondary education plans. To get a broad perspective on these problems, we spoke with Johnny Taylor, president and CEO of the Society for Human Resource Management. Taylor is the former president and CEO of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund and was appointed by President Trump to chair the White House advisory board on historically black colleges and universities. We also spoke with Lorelle Espinosa, vice president for research at the American Council on Education. Espinosa has researched how minority-serving institutions serve as engines of upward mobility, and she's an expert on equity in higher education. This episode is sponsored by the ECMC Foundation, which supports building a postsecondary education system that works for all learners through its grant making focus areas of college success and career readiness.

I spoke by phone with Dr. Olivia A. Scriven at FEMA’s headquarters in Washington, DC. Dr. Scriven serves as the Academia Advisor for FEMA’s National Disaster Recovery Support (“NDRS”) cadre. Dr. Scriven has leveraged her background and experience to launch an initiative to link communities impacted by Hurricane Michael – a Category 5 storm which devastated the Florida Panhandle -- with technical expertise from colleges and universities to support long-term recovery. These efforts range from dual-use resiliency centers designed to support large-scale community gatherings during “blue skies” and serve as hardened shelters able to withstand catastrophic winds in times of disaster. Dr. Scriven continues to consult nationally, is regularly invited to serve on peer-review panels for the NSF, and her research exploring historically Black colleges and universities and pioneering African American women in the U.S. scientific enterprise has appeared in books published by Oxford University Press and the Thurgood Marshall College Fund. Dr. Scriven earned the master’s and doctoral degree in the history and sociological studies of science and technology from the Georgia Institute of Technology. She also holds a master’s in Educational Communication and Technology from New York University, where she also earned the bachelor’s degree. She and I spoke about this program and the role project management methods and techniques play in engaging local communities and managing expectations. With President Trump in office, there's a lot of talk about what will happen across the board in the aspects of American Society that are most important to Blacks in America. Chief among those aspects is Education...right? I mean...you've seen how Betsy DeVos has been received by the public, right? Education has long been - rightfully so - a hot-button issue. It wasn't that long ago (circa 1954) that Brown vs. Board of Education ended legal segregation in American public schools. And racial disparities in education still persist. Access to post-secondary education has been and remains a huge problem. Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) were founded to fill the void that was created by racism & segregation. HBCUs still fill that void. And there's a long history of struggle to keep these institutions funded and advance their standing so they remain as safe spaces for empowering those that Society would have no problem leaving behind. The Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) is one of the major organizations fighting on behalf of HBCUs - specifically publicly funding HBCUs. And in this episode of Blacks with Power, I speak with TMCF President & CEO Johnny Taylor about pressing matters facing HBCUs as well as some of the great work being done to showcase Black Colleges and Universities - and more importantly, to showcase HBCU Students. Listen to our discussion and learn what you can do to help protect HBCUs in this present political climate as well as how you can help support the work being done to shape the next generation of the Talented Tenth. Then be sure to come back and let us know what you think... Do you agree with Johnny's perspective on President Trump's budget proposal and how it affects HBCUs? What do you think of the efforts by the Thurgood Marshall College Fund to empower students?
