440: Entering the Consumer Market while Driving Sustainability with Elyse Winer CMO & GM of Consumer at GenPhoenixElyse Winer, CMO and GM of Consumer at GenPhoenix, began her career at Merrill Lynch before transitioning to healthcare consulting at Vynamic, where she gained branding and sales experience. She then moved into startups, leading marketing for Boston-based companies and collaborating with Reebok at MC10. Before joining GenPhoenix full-time, Elyse became a partner at Material Impact, a venture capital fund, where she served as interim CMO for GenPhoenix, overseeing a rebrand and their expansion into the consumer market. Her success in both startups and large companies has earned her numerous accolades, including Forbes' "30 Under 30" in Marketing & Advertising.GenPhoenix, founded in 2007 for the aviation industry, is a market leader in the mass transportation seating category, with over 250 airlines using their material. Their technology breaks down waste leather to the fiber level and uses recycled water to rebuild the fibers, creating a product even stronger than before. This recycled leather has an 86% lower carbon footprint compared to traditional leather. GenPhoenix has since expanded into the leather goods and footwear industries, collaborating with brands like Coach and Dr. Martens. To date, they have diverted more than 10,000 tons of waste from landfills. On today's show, Alan and Elyse discuss the sustainability of the fashion industry and its future direction. They explore how GenPhoenix is adapting, shifting from a predominantly B2B model to expanding into the consumer market. They also highlight partnerships with brands like Coachtopia and Dr. Martens, among others, and discuss strategies for promoting and protecting your brand in collaborations. Additionally, they discuss what early-stage companies and scale-ups, like GenPhoenix, should prioritize when allocating their marketing budgets. In this episode, you'll learn: Strategies when expanding into the consumer marketHow to protect and promote your brand in a collaborationWhat to prioritize when allocating marketing budgets, on a budgetKey Highlights: [01:37] What Snoop Dogg is like [04:36] Career path to GenPhoenix[11:00] What is GenPhoenix [14:25] What combined role of CMO and GM of Consumer looks like[18:05] Sustainability in the fashion industry[23:45] Expanding into the consumer market[27:49] How to protect your brand in a collaboration[35:22] How being budget constrained can drive creativity[40:47] Experience of your past that defines you[43:40] Advice to younger self[45:19] A topic that you and other marketers need to learn more about[47:35] Trends or subcultures others should follow[50:00] Largest opportunity or threat to marketers todayLooking for more?Visit our website for the full show notes, links to resources mentioned in this episode, and ways to connect with the guest! This is a first! This episode is one of two interviews that we recorded live at Startup Boston Week at Suffolk University which was a ton of fun and maybe it is something that I should do more often. Material Impact is a deep tech VC firm that was founded by Carmichael Roberts and Adam Sharkaway. The firm is investing in companies that are powered by material science that solve enduring, large-scale, real-world problems. They are full lifecycle investors and work from the earliest stages of companies. In this episode of our podcast, we cover: * Elyse's background story including how she made the transition to marketing and her role at high growth startups like MC10 and Lose It! * The importance of understanding your customer and the difference between B2B versus B2C marketing. * All the details about Material Impact in terms of the types of companies they invest in and how they support their portfolio companies. * A deep conversation about Gen Phoenix, a portfolio company where Elyse is their interim CMO, that rescues leather offcuts destined for landfill and regenerates them into a premium, durable leather material coveted by the world's most iconic brands in the fashion industry. * Advice on getting media attention for your startup. * And so much more.

Innovation Works announces the appointment of Kevin Dowling as interim lead of the Robotics Factory. Dowling, a tech leader who was involved with three IW companies and a founding member and board chair of the Pittsburgh Robotics Network, brings with him an impressive repertoire of experience and leadership to helm the Robotics Factory program. Kevin's career highlights include a 17-year tenure as Scientist and Senior Engineer at Carnegie Mellon University's Robotics Institute and holding the position of CEO at Kaarta. He has also worked in technology leadership roles at PRI Automation, Color Kinetics (acquired by Philips), and MC10. Listen and learn how Kevin's unique blend of technical knowledge and business acumen will be invaluable in driving the development of the Robotics Factory. Launched in partnership with the Pittsburgh Robotics Network and other regional partners, the Robotics Factory is a part of a $63 million grant awarded by the U.S. Economic Development Administration (EDA) to the Southwestern Pennsylvania New Economy Collaborative as part of their Build Back Better Regional Challenge. The Robotics Factory, under the leadership of Innovation Works and with four-year support from the EDA, will operate a series of inter-related programs. As this podcast was posting, IW announced The Robotics Factory will locate in the Tech Forge building in Lawrenceville, part of the long “Robotics Row” that runs from the Strip District. The first cohort of six companies chosen to participate in the Accelerate program will re-locate to the Lawrenceville location as soon as feasible. Also, the factory's new space will serve as a designated home for the Scale program. The Scale program offers unmatched expertise in product prototyping and services, facilitating the creation of production-ready products. Providing in-house design for manufacturing, supply chain management, prototyping support, and access to the region's comprehensive manufacturing resources, this new hub signifies a critical milestone in the program. By integrating manufacturing considerations at the initial design stages, companies can accelerate growth, deploy technologies, and achieve scalability more swiftly.

We're Ingesting Foods That Might Have Known Nerve Toxins In Them That Increase The Risk Of Parkinson's Disease Dr. Ray Dorsey, M.D.• https://www.urmc.rochester.edu/people/26764214-earl-ray-dorsey • Book – Ending Parkinsons Disease #RayDorsey#ParkinsonsDisease #Parkinsons Dr. Ray Dorsey, M.D. is a medical doctor and author of Ending Parkinson's Disease: A Prescription for Action. In this "must-read" guide Dr Dorsey and three other doctors and advocates offer a bold action plan to prevent, care for, and treat Parkinson's disease-one of the great health challenges of our time. Brain diseases are now the world's leading source of disability. The fastest growing of these is Parkinson's: the number of impacted patients has doubled to more than six million over the last twenty-five years and is projected to double again by 2040. Harmful pesticides that increase the risk of Parkinson's continue to proliferate, many people remain undiagnosed and untreated, research funding stagnates, and the most effective treatment is now a half century old. Dr. Ray Dorsey is David M. Levy Professor of Neurology and Director of the Center for Health + Technology at the University of Rochester Medical Center. Dr. Dorsey is helping investigate new treatments for movement disorders and improve the way care is delivered for individuals with Parkinson disease and other neurological disorders. Using simple web-based video conferencing, he and his colleagues are seeking to provide care to individuals with Parkinson and neurological diseases anywhere that they live. Topic: Australia battles Big Tech over news revenue-sharing law Facebook Inc has blocked Australian users from sharing and viewing news content on its popular social media platform, escalating a dispute with the government over paying media publishers for content. While Big Tech and media outlets have battled over the right to news content in other jurisdictions, Australia's looming law represents the most expansive reform and is being closely watched around the world. The so-called Media Bargaining Code has been designed by the government and competition regulator to address a power imbalance between the social media giants and publishers when negotiating payment for news content used on the tech firms' sites. The proposed legislation has reached a crunch point, with widespread support in parliament, where it is expected to be voted into law within days. In recent years, traditional media companies operating in Australia have suffered huge hits to income streams, due to dwindling subscriptions and advertising. For every A$100 spent on online advertising in Australia, excluding classifieds, nearly one-third goes to Google and Facebook, the competition regulator has said. Facebook said that the law “fundamentally misunderstands” the relationship between itself and publishers and it faced a stark choice of attempting to comply with it or ban news content. It said its platform generates billions of free referrals to Australian publishers worth significant sums to the media companies. Alphabet Inc-owned Google, however, has backed down from a threat to withdraw its main search engine from Australia if the laws go ahead, and has instead struck deals with some of the country's major commercial publishers. They include a global deal with News Corp for an unnamed sum in one of the most extensive deals of its kind with Big Tech. Source article: https://www.taipeitimes.com/News/lang/archives/2021/02/22/2003752624 Next Article Topic: A Wearable Technology That Fits Just Like Skin It is almost certain that the next era of computing will be wearables. But it is commensurately uncertain what these wearables will be and where on your body they will be worn. Apple and Samsung, for example, are betting on the wrist; Google, the face. Some tech companies believe clothing will simply become electronic. Yet there's a whole new segment of start-ups that believes we humans will become the actual computers, or at least the place where the technology will reside. These start-ups are working on a class of wearable computers that adhere to the skin like temporary tattoos, or attach to the body like an adhesive bandage. Many of these technologies are stretchable, bendable and incredibly thin. They can also be given unique designs, to stand out like a bold tattoo, or to blend in to the color of your skin. Attachable computers will be less expensive to make and provide greater accuracy because sensors will be closer to a person's body (or even inside us) . MC10, a company based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, is testing attachable computers about the size of a piece of gum that can include wireless antennas, temperature and heartrate sensors and a tiny battery. Scott Pomerantz, head of MC10, said: “Ours are always on you. We have the smallest, most flexible, stretchable, wearable computer, and you can collect all sorts of biometric data tied to your motion.” MC10 recently teamed up with John A. Rogers, a professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, who has been working for nearly a decade to perfect flexible devices that can be worn on the skin or implanted . How would these gadgets work? Maybe you want to figure out which deodorant would be best for you. A sticker that tracks your sweat level would email you a few recommendations. Or if you want to monitor your baby's breathing, a little sensor on the baby's chest would alert you to any problems. “We'll eventually see a more intimate integration of electronics and biological systems,” Mr. Rogers said . “Without that kind of intimate physical contact, it's going to be difficult, or maybe even impossible, to extract meaningful data.” The health applications are enormous. Over the past year, Mr. Rogers and his team of scientists have been working with patients with Parkinson's disease to monitor their motions, with dermatologists to treat skin diseases, and with beauty companies like L'Oreal to develop digital stickers that track skin hydration. Anke Loh of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago has been experimenting with making the attachable computers look like body art. “You see these patches and you really want to put them on your skin, even without knowing what the function is,” Ms. Loh said . “There's a lot of potential to combine fashion and technology.” Scientists at the University of Tokyo have been working on an “e-skin,” which is an electronic skin that sits on top of real skin. It looks like a stretchable sheet of plastic wrap, yet contains lots of health-related sensors. In another iteration of e-skin, scientists are working to add a layer of LEDs, turning it into a screen that sits on the body. Digital skins offer numerous applications, not only in monitoring a user's health, but also as a visual user interface. They may even replace smartphones one day. But don't throw aside your smartwatch or Google Glass just yet. It will be a while before our wearable future becomes known. Source article: https://paper.udn.com/udnpaper/POH0067/268839/web/ Next Article Topic: Facebook is making its own AI deepfakes to head off a disinformation disaster Facebook fears that AI-generated “deepfake” videos could be the next big source of viral misinformation—spreading among its users with potentially catastrophic consequences for the next US presidential election. Its solution? Today's guest is Isaiah Kacyvenski. Isaiah's diverse background includes earning two degrees from Harvard, playing in the National Football League for 8 years in between, and achieving success as an experienced entrepreneur and investor. Perhaps what's most impressive about Isaiah's background though has to do with where he started from. Isaiah grew up in Endicott, NY where at times he grew up homeless and without food with his parents. His rise from poverty led him to becoming a subject of an NFL Films profile that received an Emmy Nomination for Outstanding Long Feature, and was also featured on an Oprah Winfrey show titled "Why They Beat the Odds". Following his NFL Career, Isaiah acted as Global Head of Business Development at MC10 and co-founded the premier sports tech research and advisory firm, Sports Innovation Lab. Immediately prior to founding Will Ventures, Isaiah was the Managing Partner at Blue Star Innovation Partners, where he led the firm's sports technology investment practice. Today, Isaiah serves as Managing Partner of Will Ventures, a venture capital investment fund focused on sports technology and the massive, adjacent market opportunities that it opens up (human performance, health and wellness, media and entertainment, eSports, and more). In this interview, we dive deep into Isaiah's time growing up in poverty, his journey to Harvard and playing in the NFL, perspectives on drive and managing setbacks, and all things Will Ventures. We could have talked for 3 hours, and due to time constraints we couldn't touch on everything, but I promise part 2 is in the works. Timestamps 00:03:06 Growing up in poverty in Endicott, NY 00:07:33 Both his parents grew up in orphanages 00:11:49 What homelessness looked like for him and his family 00:15:02 The impact of his mother's death on him 00:23:42 Why he feels there's always something big to accomplish 00:26:02 The impact his father has had on his life 00:30:29 When and why he started playing football 00:35:19 When he realized he could make a career out of football 00:41:08 How not making his high school varsity football team changed the course of his life 00:42:44 Journey to Harvard and playing in the NFL 00:52:53 Overview of Will Ventures 00:55:36 The democratization of sports tech and the importance of strong founding teams 00:58:24 A few of their portfolio companies 01:02:48 His driving force 01:04:12 Parting words of wisdom around getting through tough times
Today I’m joined by Brian Reilly. Brian is the co-founder and managing partner of Will Ventures — an early-stage firm investing across health & wellness, media, and consumer products. In this episode, we discuss the firm’s $55M inaugural fund. We take a closer look at a few of their portfolio companies — including Elo, Liteboxer, and Breathwork. Then Brian talks through ideas and untapped opportunities he’s interested in backing. Let’s get into it. More from Brian Brian brings a diverse professional background to bear on his work, with experience spanning the sports, fitness and healthcare sectors and across technologies (wearables, disposables, artificial intelligence, machine-learning) and business environments (VC-funded startups and investment firms). It's the Halloween edition of Health in 2 Point 00 where we round up a bunch of smaller deals plus Medidata buying MC10. The smaller ones include Navina, Nice Healthcare and Vitable (who appear to be the same thing in telehealth), Coa (mental health group classes), and Quit Genius (smoking cessation) which somehow has the tennis playing William sisters on board. But the main question of today is whether Jess DaMassa is wearing a mermaid tail below that wig!
