The increase, effective fall 2024, also affects online learners, who will see a 2.5% eTuition increase and new fees. Dr. Tanya Altmann, FAAP, a UCLA-trained pediatrician talks with Michelle about the importance of play. Experts agree, play is an integral component to a child's development, as it builds important social and emotional skills. According to a recent study, due to COVID, kids are redefining the way they want to play, including seeking a safe space to play and the permission to say YES to play more. Yet where kids see fun and an opportunity to explore, parents can look at the same thing and see dirty surfaces, limiting kids' freedom to play. This has uncovered a play gap between the way kids want to experience play and how parents are helping to facilitate it. To help close this gap, the FamilyGuard™ Brand is introducing YES, PLAY!, a new initiative that highlights the importance of having a dedicated, clean play space in the home, while giving parents the tools they need to be successful in today's state of family play. Last year over 100,000 Americans died after overdosing on opioids, including prescription pain medications. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. Ashley Schmidt is the VP of Regulatory and Compliance at Inmar Intelligence and talks about National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, their drug disposal program and how people can get involved locally. When school breaks for summer, many kids want a break from everything! It's tempting to trade in alarm clocks, homework and gym class for sleeping late, screen time and snacking on sugary summer treats – but it's obviously not in kids' best interest, physically or mentally. The Society of Behavioral Medicine reports that physical activity for children between 6 and 9 years old drops by 53% during summer break, resulting in weight gain and bad eating habits. And the lack of stimulation leads to ‘summer learning loss,' a phenomena where kids lose academic skills, like reading and math. But the struggle to keep kids entertained, engaged and eating well for three months is real for parents! Fortunately, they're getting an assist. Who better to inspire kids to get off the bench and take a swing at adopting healthier habits than a woman who managed the diets of Chicago Cubs players for a decade?Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, Dawn Jackson Blatner, has teamed up with Eggland's Best to develop a game plan for motivating kids to stay active and eat healthy during their summer break and beyond! And first base is the YMCA's nationwide Healthy Kids Day® event on April 29th, an opportunity for families to get active, have fun and jumpstart a healthy summer.Kathleen Ashmore is a professional chef and recipe developer. In today's often hectic lifestyle, it can be hard to find better-for-you options while on the go. Smoothie bowls are an on-trend solution to keep you energized while you tackle the day ahead. Packed with premium ingredients and whole fruits, smoothie bowls can be incredibly nutrient- and protein-dense, especially if they include superfoods like açaí or pitaya, commonly known as dragon fruit. To meet the growing demand for healthier and more satisfying options on-the-go, Smoothie King – the first company to bring smoothies to the masses – launched a new product lineup, the Smoothie Bowl.

Updates from area hospitals, local schools, the Cartersville church and the latest numbers on state, national and worldwide cases. Event updates: Harbin Clinic Leprechaun-a-Thon, Healthy Kids Day, Floyd parent-teacher conferences canceled. Other headlines: Business: 100 new jobs coming to Floyd County as part of Kerry Group's $125 million expansion here. It is the latest multimillion-dollar investment by an existing industry. State Patrol: Rockmart woman, 59, dies following collision with semi-tractor trailer and a second truck in Cedartown early Wednesday. Business: Coosa Valley Credit Union's new headquarters looking good. Cartersville's newest restaurant just days away. Politics: Floyd can vote this Saturday and Sunday; Saturday voting in Bartow, Gordon, Polk counties. Updated election calendar. RANTS OF THE DAY: Coping with a pandemic. First, a note on how the narrative of the coronavirus story has shifted from the state to the communities such as Northwest Georgia. Through Facebook, press releases and other means, the most information the community is receiving today is not coming from state leadership or public health. That has got to change. As we keep saying, the best way to beat disinformation is with information. We especially take offense to a little sabre rattling about laws and patient privacy. No one’s privacy is violated by stating the patient’s gender, age and county of residence. Second, it is time for leadership on any level to quit treating this as the onset of an outbreak. That was two or more weeks ago even if none of us knew it at the time. We are in a very different phase of this spreading virus; act accordingly. The best example: More than 100 higher education centers already have moved to distance learning and yet most Georgia colleges and universities are waiting. Can you image what Athens will be like next week if 30,000 students return from spring break, having mixed with people around the country? Third, a job well done by Floyd County Schools as educators learned that one of their own had tested positive for the corona virus. The Cave Spring Elementary situation was handled by the book, with student safety at the top of the list. This two-day break couldn’t come at a better time for the school system, the students and the staff. Fourth, we applaud the organizers of the Leprechaun-a-thon and Healthy Kids Days as both were canceled because of potential health risks. Call it proactive or precaution, we call it smart. We’re now witnessing the impact a simple church service has had on Northwest Georgia. We need to be thinking about other public events starting today. And finally, we ask for a truce between those who are concerned and others shrugging this off as a flu-like outbreak. Let’s get the situation under control and people the help they need, and then we can get back to politics. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/john-druckenmiller/support

In the U.S., millions of youth and teens (1 out of every 6) are struggling with"food insecurity." That's why-in partnership with Walmart Foundation-the Y has nearly 4,000 sites where children can receive a healthy meal and/or snack. In 2017, the Y served 476,00 kids more than 22,000,000 meals and snacks. WHAT YOU'LL LEARN ABOUT THE Y'S HEALTHY KIDS DAY: How to enter a special art contest to promote hunger awareness Why summer is a crucial time for children's health Learn about the epidemic of child food insecurity in our country Why child hunger is much worse during the summer SPOKESPERSON BACKGROUND: McDaniel has been the Anti-Hunger Initiatives Specialist at the YMCA of the USA (Y-USA) since 2013, working to offer assistance and guidance to local Ys to strengthen child nutrition programs across the country. During her tenure, the Y has expanded its anti-hunger work, increasing number of youth served per year by 131% and number of meals served per year by 165%. In 2016, over 476,000 youth received over 22 million meals at more than 3,900 sites and after-school programs through the Y's Year-Round Food Program. And finally we closed the show with one of our favorite regulars Nicci Micco from EatingWell magazine stopped by to share all she knows about organic food and the importance of eating local. Eating organic berries instead of conventional ones can reduce your exposure to pesticides, and recent research suggests that it also may give you a nutrient boost. According to Marissa Lippert's, M.S., R.D. article in this month's Eating Well magazine the bottom line is...“Eating more fresh fruits and vegetables in general [not necessarily organic ones] is the point,? says Alyson Mitchell, Ph.D., an associate professor of food science and technology at University of California, Davis. If buying all organic isn’t a priority—or a financial reality for you—you might opt for organic specifically when you’re selecting foods that are most heavily contaminated with pesticide and insecticide residues. According to the Environmental Working Group (www.ewg.org), those include peaches, apples, bell peppers, celery, nectarines, strawberries, cherries, lettuce, imported grapes and pears. For more information about organics and eating well in general check out Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy's favorite foodie magazine at www.eatingwell.com and when you're their be sure to sign up for some of their great email newsletters.
