In this episode of the Lead with Levity podcast, Heather introduces us to Alicia, an author, entrepreneur, and former CEO who dared to ask, "What if?" The inspiring conversation takes us beyond conventional career paths and explores the immense potential within all of us when we choose to step outside our comfort zones.A Leap into the Unknown: Alicia's JourneyAlicia's story is a testament to courage and curiosity. Despite having a successful career as the CEO of a consulting firm, she decided to spend a year interning in various roles, completely diverging from her professional norm. This bold move was a response to an internal realization that the life she meticulously built was no longer fulfilling her.Heather and Alicia discuss the fears and societal pressures of making drastic changes in one's career, especially when everything on paper seems perfect. Alicia's journey is about choosing passion over predictability and following one's authentic path. The Power of Exploring New PathsThroughout the conversation, Alicia emphasizes the importance of listening to your internal desires, even if they contradict societal expectations and the life plan you thought you always wanted. She encourages creating time and space for dreaming as a critical first step in discovering one's passions.Alicia's internships in musical theater, art galleries, and hospitality offered her the profound experience of being a beginner, learning new skills, and reigniting her sense of curiosity. These experiences reinforced the belief that there is always time to follow your dreams and pursue what truly excites you.Balancing Career Ambitions with Personal HappinessFor those at the beginning of their careers, Alicia offers invaluable advice: remain true to yourself by constantly questioning your "why." Understanding the purpose behind your actions can prevent you from living life on autopilot and ensure that your professional journey aligns with your personal values and passions.Alicia's journey reminds us that very few life decisions are irreversible. Each step you take contributes to the person you are becoming and the life you wish to build. Her story is a powerful reminder that it's okay to pivot if your current path no longer feels right.Continuing the Journey: Lessons and InspirationsAlicia continues to live a life full of "what if" moments. From auditioning for musicals to organizing retreats focused on personal growth, she embraces opportunities that challenge her comfort zone. Her philosophy centers on the idea that life is a collection of experiences, and it's crucial to engage in those that push us to grow and evolve. In closing, Alicia offers practical advice to anyone feeling stuck: take small, incremental steps toward your dreams. Whether it's as simple as signing up for a class or starting a new hobby, each tiny step can lead to significant changes and bring you closer to the life you envision for yourself.Final Thoughts: Embracing Change with ConfidenceAlicia Fernandez Miranda's year of internships is a guiding beacon for anyone questioning their current path or yearning for more fulfillment in their career and life. Our conversation for The Valley Business Today with Shayla Rickard, Business Retention Manager for Frederick County Economic Development Authority to discuss the upcoming Worlds of Work (WOW) Expo. This event, happening on October 11, 2024, at the Wilkins Athletic and Event Center at Shenandoah University, is an eighth-grade career exploration program. Originally for seventh graders, the event now targets eighth graders and hosts about 3,000 students from seven school divisions. Shayla explains the origins of WOW, modeled off a southern program, and highlights its purpose—to give students a hands-on look at various careers available in their area. The expo includes industries like agriculture, manufacturing, IT, and healthcare. With employers providing interactive activities, students get to experience a day-in-the-life scenario for different jobs. We discuss how the event allows local businesses and industries to showcase the diversity of roles within their fields. I share anecdotes from previous expos, demonstrating how the event helps students think beyond typical job descriptions. For instance, kids learn that radio stations need more than DJs—they require salespeople, engineers, and programmers. The conversation also touches on how the WOW Expo encourages students to consider different career paths and sparks new interests. Shayla mentions the robust Career and Technical Education (CTE) program in Frederick County, aiding students in making more informed decisions about their future careers. We also talk about the logistics of participating in the expo. Businesses interested in being exhibitors can register easily and no fee is involved. There is a hospitality suite and lunch provided for exhibitors. Shayla highlights the variety of participants they've had in the past, from large corporations to small local businesses, underlining that all sorts of industries are welcome to join. Most of us still don't know what we want to be when we grow up, but at least we know more than we did when we wanted to be pro athletes or “movie stars” (the old people version of influencers). As we have conversations with kids and think about how to prepare them for adulthood, helping kids explore their passions and interests becomes challenging. Not all communities have access to the resources to be able to provide “real-life” career experiences to students. Transporting kids and prioritizing funding and resources becomes a logistical issue; which makes it hard to educate kids about their career options. On top of that, it's difficult to help kids grasp what it might be like in a particular career; which means they might be missing out on opportunities to cultivate their skills and interests. But what if we had a way to bring career exploration TO students so they could explore their interests in an accessible, non-threatening way? With some of the new technology coming down the pipeline, it may be more possible that people think. That's why I had Matt Chausee from Be More Colorful on “De Facto Leaders” for a special bonus episode to talk about innovative companies that are impacting K-12 education in a positive way. Matt Chaussee is the CEO of Be More Colorful, a midwest-based immersive media production studio whose platform, CareerViewXR, is rapidly gaining national attention. Matt, along with his wife (and company owner) Katie, lead an innovative team of creatives who are laser focused on making career exploration affordable, accessible, and fun! CareerViewXR provides students and adult career seekers across the country with an unprecedented opportunity to experience real-world careers through virtual reality technology. Recently selected from a field of over 2,000 applicants to be one of 33 Semifinalists for the prestigious Yass Prize, Matt will discuss the significance of the award, and how he sees tools like CareerViewXR transforming how we guide students on their educational journey.*If you have a vested interest in what's happening in K-12 Education, take a look at some of the amazing work that's being done by the Yass prize finalists. Mark Steelman is a XR Access Working Group Member and Senior Unity Engineer at Transfr, which uses virtual reality to "train people for well-paying careers available now in high-demand fields." Steelman was at XR Access showing off some of the accessibility features of their VR training software that includes captions, height adjustments, spatial audio, and arrows as audio cues or a way to direct attention. He was soliciting feedback from XR Access attendees to add even more features to ensure that people of all abilities are able to get employed. He also facilitated a group discussion about the potential of using virtual reality for career exploration explicitly for folks who have a variety of different disabilities to be able to explore whether or not certain jobs would be accessible to them, as well as the potential future where VR training or practice-based embodied experiences could help assess someone's ability to do a job that would allow some folks with disabilities to demonstrate their competency without having to disclose their disability and potentially face discrimination. Steelman also shares some of the feedback and insights from the XR Access break-out session on using XR for career exploration that he moderated.
