Keith McCullough, Founder and CEO of Hedgeye Risk Management, joins Alan Dunne in this episode for an in-depth look into Keith's distinctive approach to global macro analysis and tactical trading. The conversation explores Keith's background as a hedge fund manager and his views on how markets have evolved, especially in relation to option flows. Keith breaks down his four-quadrant framework for macro analysis, explaining how pinpointing the economy's position within these quadrants is as much an art as it is a science. His framework currently signals continued strength in the US dollar and US equities. A fundamental aspect of Keith's approach is his respect for market signals and the need for these signals to confirm his macro views. He also shares valuable insights into the behavioural challenges of investing and emphasizes the importance of a disciplined, repeatable process to drive long-term success.-----EXCEPTIONAL RESOURCE: Find Out How to Build a Safer & Better Performing Portfolio using this FREE NEW Portfolio Builder Tool-----Follow Niels on Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube or via the TTU website.IT's TRUE ? – most CIO's read 50+ books each year – get your FREE copy of the Ultimate Guide to the Best Investment Books ever written here. And you can get a free copy of my latest book “Ten Reasons to Add Trend Following to Your Portfolio” here.Learn more about the Trend Barometer here.Send your questions to info@toptradersunplugged.comAnd please share this episode with a like-minded friend and leave an honest Rating & Review on iTunes or Spotify so more people can discover the podcast.Follow Alan on Twitter.Follow Keith on Twitter.Episode TimeStamps: 02:23 - Introduction to Keith McCullough05:01 - From hedge fund to research07:29 - Being a retail investor is an insult09:56 - How McCullough has reacted to the rise of 0DTE options13:48 - Have stocks become more macro driven?15:54 - Where are we currently in the 4 quads?19:22 - The challenge of lag in macro signals21:26 - McCullough's framework...

Growth in the real economy is expected to decelerate over the next 12 months, while inflation is reaccelerating.  Darius' model predicts below-normal returns for the stock and bond markets over the next three months. It also suggests above-normal returns for the U.S. dollar and below-normal returns for commodities and Bitcoin. A key takeaway is that with so many negative indicators, cash is currently the preferred asset.  Darius also discussed the likelihood of a recession, citing that the most probable window for its onset is Q4 of 2023 to Q1 of 2024. In this episode Imran Lakha, founder of Options Insight, talks to Darius Dale, founder of 42 Macro. Darius started his career at Hedgeye Risk Management, conducting macro research by building quantitative models based around identifying the growth and inflation regimes of global markets. Using this approach and backtesting cross-asset returns against the 4 regimes (the GRIDs), he helps investors navigate the market with robust portfolio construction and risk management.  Being data driven and multi-factor, allows him make investment decisions without bias and be honest about what the market is telling him.  They use the analogy of needing both the “weather forecast” (market price signals) and a “map” (macro regime forecasting) to get to your destination safely.  They discuss the volatility signals that 42 Macro uses to help identify when markets may be stretched in one direction or another, the VIX/VVIX ratio which is a key metric that Darius uses and how incorporating SKEW moves could enhance the model even further in the future. Finally, they talk about the current macro environment and how equity markets and bond markets seem to be signalling quite different market regimes with equities focussed on the short term, whereas bonds are looking further into the future where growth headwinds are highly likely to materialise.
