It's all about storing your computer data safely and securely through the use of hardware solutions. You might recall storing data in hard disk drives in the past which often has slow reading and writing speeds. Fast forward to today, super-fast SSDs or Solid State Drive that use NAND-based flash memory to store data are more commonly used, as they are said to be more reliable and efficient than hard drives. But while they may be faster, the question remains as to whether using SSDs are more secure. And that's the problem that our guest Flexxon wants to address. Founded in 2007, Flexxon is a Singapore-headquartered firm that marries cybersecurity solutions and hardware. In particular, the firm launched the world's first AI-embedded firmware based cybersecurity solution called the X-PHY® Cybersecure SSD in 2021. The solution detects anomalies in behavioural data access patterns and effectively shuts down potential incursions in real-time to prevent critical data loss and exposure. The solution has since been integrated into laptops with major PC makers including Lenovo, ASUS, HP, and Thomson Computing. But how does it work exactly? Meanwhile, the Heliconia-backed firm also said it has 30 patents under its belt, but what can we look forward to in terms of its product pipeline for the year? The First Fleet's Captain Arthur Phillip brought grape cuttings from South America and South Africa and produced a small vineyard at Farm Cove. Today, Farm Cove is the location of the Sydney Botanical Gardens. When the plants did not bear, they were transplanted to Parramatta. Arthur Philip served as the first Governor of New South Wales when his Crimson Grapes flourished in the warm Australian fertile soil. Today Crimson Grapes can also be found in Victoria and southeastern Queensland. Australian Crimson Grapes enjoy a long harvest period from November to May. 1869 Birth of Charlotte Mary Mew, English poet. In her poem, In Nunhead Cemetary, she wrote, There is something horrible about a flower; This, broken in my hand, is one of those He threw it in just now; it will not live another hour; There are thousands more; you do not miss a rose. And in The Sunlit House, she wrote, The parched garden flowers Their scarlet petals from the beds unswept Like children unloved and ill-kept But I, the stranger, knew that I must stay. Pace up the weed-grown paths and down Till one afternoon ... From an upper window a bird flew out And I went my way. 1887 Birth of Georgia O'Keeffe, American modernist artist. During her incredible career as a painter, Georgia created over 900 works of art. She is remembered for her iconic paintings of skulls and flowers. In 1938 Georgia's career stalled. Yet she was approached by an advertising agency about creating two paintings for the Hawaiian Pineapple Company (now Dole Food Company) to use in their advertising. Georgia was 51 years old when she took the nine weeks, all-expense-paid trip. Georgia never did paint a pineapple. And gardeners will enjoy this obscure fact: Of all the floral paintings that O'Keeffe created in Hawaii, exactly NONE were native to the island. Instead, Georgia loved the exotic tropicals imported from South America: Bougainvillea, Plumeria, Heliconia, Calliandra, and the White Bird of Paradise. It was Georgia 0'Keeffe who said all of these quotes about flowers - a subject for which she held strong opinions. Nobody sees a flower - really - it is so small it takes time ...like to have a friend takes time. I hate flowers. I paint them because they're cheaper than models and they don't move! If you take a flower in your hand and really look at it, it's your world for a moment. I decided that if I could paint that flower on a huge scale, you could not ignore its beauty. 1930 Birth of James Graham Ballard (pen name J.G. Ballard), English novelist. James was part of the New Wave of science fiction in the 1960s. Yet, he is most remembered for his 1984 war novel, Empire of the Sun. In The Unlimited Dream Company, James wrote, "Miriam - I'll give you any flowers you want!' Rhapsodising over the thousand scents of her body, I exclaimed: "I'Il grow orchids from your hands, roses from your breasts. You can have magnolias in your hair... In your womb I'll set a fly-trap!" And in The Garden of Time, James wrote, "Axel," his wife asked with sudden seriousness. "Before the garden dies ... may I pick the last flower?" Understanding her request, he nodded slowly. James once wrote, I believe in madness, in the truth of the inexplicable, in the common sense of stones, in the lunacy of flowers. Grow That Garden Library™ Book Recommendation Entangled Life by Merlin Sheldrake This book came out in 2021, and the subtitle is How Fungi Make Our Worlds, Change Our Minds & Shape Our Futures. This book has won all kinds of recognition: The Wainwright Prize, the Royal Society Science Book Prize, and the Guild of Food Writers Award • Shortlisted for the British Book Award Longlisted for the Rathbones Folio Prize. The publisher writes, In Entangled Life, the brilliant young biologist Merlin Sheldrake shows us the world from a fungal point of view, providing an exhilarating change of perspective. Sheldrake's vivid exploration takes us from yeast to psychedelics, to the fungi that range for miles underground and are the largest organisms on the planet, to those that link plants together in complex networks known as the "Wood Wide Web," to those that infiltrate and manipulate insect bodies with devastating precision. Entangled Life is a fascinating read. Merlin's passion for fungi (fun-ghee) knows no bounds. Fungi are often referred to as a neglected kingdom of life. Compared to other kingdoms like plants and animals, we know very little about fungi, and only six percent has thus far been described. And Fungi are more closely related to animals than to plants. Today most plant life depends on relationships with mycorrhizal fungi or fungi that live in their roots. These fungi help plants acquire water and nutrients. They also protect the plants from disease. But its not just plants that need fungi. All Life on earth depends on fungi. Most fungi are mycelium - the branching fusing networks of tubular cells that feed and transport substances around themselves. Fungi have a unique way of organizing themselves. Mycelium cover the earth in a chaotic, sprawling way. Mycelium can be stretched out end to end up to ten kilometers from a single teaspoon of soil. This book is 368 pages of the mysterious and miraculous world of fungi. Botanic Spark 1909 On this day, the orange blossom was designated as the official state flower of Florida. This gesture inspired the poet William Livingston Larned to write a poem called Florida's State Flower. PRESS GANGED!! A ragtag crew of able-bodied workers have been shanghaied by some enterprising members of the Mordon army and are en route to the city of Terminus in the Western Wilds, when their cart is ransacked by two factions of reptilian rogues. One faction makes off with the cart's elk, the other the surviving goblin guide. The commotion attracts the attention of the "Fury of the Forest Father," the fearsome orc Uga, who reluctantly agrees to help this strange crew search for Clurm, their goblin captor. This search leads them to the village of the abductors, the gera kai, small reptilian and avian creatures. The party's bard, Iban, is granted the ability to speak with them by a gera kai mage named Heliconia. The gera kai lament the disruption of the local ecology: overhunting of tapirs by humanoid hunters has lead to more aggression from the predatory panthers, some of which the party had to dispatch on the way to the village! The party half-heartedly agree to try and convince the hunters to be more mindful of their culling. The party defeats a local menace, thanks in large part to an incapacitating spell performed by the tiefling wizard Desire, and a talisman is forged from the allosaurus's claw, allowing the full party to understand their gera kai guide, Hevea. Their guide then leads them to the inn where the hunters are known to congregate, where they meet another party of Mordon soldiers. The leader grants the party a writ of passage to Terminus based on their heroic rescue of Clurm. We left the party enjoying a late lunch at the end, abuzz with the many branching paths this bustling inn could provide them with as the party continues their adventures.
Today we celebrate the first grapes that were grown down under and the poet who saved a tree that looks like it came straight out of a fairy tale. We'll learn about the painter who was supposed to paint pineapples but never did and the florist who did the flowers for Queen Elizabeth's coronation. We'll hear some thoughts on autumn from a Swiss philosopher and poet. We Grow That Garden Library with a riveting biography of a floral artist extraordinaire and the founder of the cordon bleu cooking school. I'll talk about how you can repurpose a big bulky item taking up space in your kitchen cupboard, and then we'll wrap things up with the Florida State Flower - think citrus! But first, let's catch up on a few recent events. Bob Randall's gardening book explains how to cope with Houston's hotter temperatures. Dr. Bob has a new book for Houston gardeners - and great tips for dealing with warmer temps: 1. Grow your own food — even if it’s just a single pot of lettuce on a balcony. Food gardening cuts your carbon footprint. It sharpens your awareness of the natural world. And it’s an excellent way to fight depression about global warming. 2. If you’re a long-time gardener, accept that the time-honored planting dates you used ten years ago may no longer work for specific crops. If old reliables such as corn or lettuce are now failing year after year, ask yourself: Is it because the average temperature is too high for germination, pollination, or some other crucial stage of plant life? Adjust your planting schedule accordingly. 3. To cope with both flooding and droughts, add a pond or rain garden to your yard. During heavy storms, it will store rainwater. And over time, it will release it into the water table below your yard, keeping deep roots happy for months to come. 4. When doing your long-term planning, remember that Houston’s summer is hard both on plants and people. Plan to do as little hard outdoor work in your garden in the hot months as possible. Water with a soaker hose and automated timer. Plant cover crops to recharge the soil and keep out weeds. 5. Plant what grows well here in the warming subtropics — even if it means trying new foods or plants. Citrus trees, blackberries, figs, and persimmons grow exceptionally well here. I'd love to meet you in the group. Brevities #OTD On this day in 1791, Australia's first thriving grapevine was planted. The Australian wine industry began with the arrival of the first fleet into Sydney Cove. In 1788, Captain Arthur Phillip of the First Fleet brought grape cuttings from South America and South Africa. Philip planted a small vineyard at Farm Cove - the site of the present Sydney Botanical Gardens. In the beginning, the settlement in New South Wales experienced great difficulty. Supplies were limited, so cultivating crops for food was the top priority. The soil in and around Sydney was poor, and the convicts lacked horticultural experience. Starvation was a real issue during those early days. Not surprisingly, Philip's vines did not bear, but they were able to be transplanted to a new location - a three-acre vineyard at Parramatta. By this time, Arthur Philip had become the first Governor of New South Wales. Philip's grapes were Crimson Grapes, which require warm, deep, and fertile soil. Fortunately, many regions in Australia are perfect for growing Crimson Grapes like areas in Victoria, New South Wales, and southeastern Queensland. Australian Crimson Grapes are harvested from November to May. #OTD Today is the birthday of the poet, Dodgers baseball fan, and founding member of the Friends of Prospect Park, Marianne Moore, who was born on this day in 1885. Moore was an eccentric intellectual who had a range of interests outside of poetry. In 1967, when she was 80 years old, Moore created a citizen group called the Friends of Prospect Park. Moore formed the group to protect endangered trees in Prospect Park - especially one tree in particular; the Camperdown Elm. Camperdown Elms have a fascinating history that dates back to 1840. That year, on the estate of the First Earl of Camperdown, the estate forester and Landscaper named David Taylor made a discovery. After planting much of the forest on the estate, one day, Taylor noticed a contorted young elm tree growing parallel to the ground. What Taylor was looking at was essentially a weeping mutation of the Scotch Elm. Like other weepers, the tree lacked the gene for negative geotropism, so the tree couldn't distinguish which way was up. Taylor dug up the young elm and brought it to the gardens of Camperdown House. Eventually, Taylor grafted cuttings of the weeping elm to Wych Elms, and the result was a tree that became known as a Camperdown Elm - a weeping cultivar of the Scotch Elm. Victorian gardeners loved Camperdown Elms - with their contortions and branches that grow out from the trunk quite parallel to the ground. In 1872, the New York florist Adolphus Goby Burgess gifted a Camperdown Elm to the Brooklyn Parks Commission. The Burgess family had immigrated from England twenty years earlier in 1852. They were highly regarded in the world of horticulture, and their specialty was dahlias. Adolphus, no doubt, acquired the tree thanks to his English connections. After receiving the tree from Burgess, it was Frederick Law Olmsted, who decided on the location for it. He decided to install it near the boathouse at Prospect Park. Since the graft was relatively low on the rootstock, Olmsted wisely planted the tree on a small hill allowing plenty of room for the weeping branches. By the time the Pulitzer-Winning Poet Marianne Moore fell in love with the Camperdown Elm at Prospect Park, it was in sad shape. Some of the limbs were hollow thanks to rats and carpenter ants. The weak areas of the tree made it vulnerable, and it began to succumb to a bacterial infection as well as general rot. Marianne used her fame and her wit to save the Camperdown Elm. She wrote a poem about the tree which was published in The New Yorker in September 1967. The public read her poem, and the Bartlett Tree Company saved the tree. It still stands today. Before I read the poem, I'll offer a few definitions. Thanatopsis is the name of a poem written by William Cullen Bryant. It's also a Greek word that means meditation on or thinking about death. Byrant's poem is a consolation to us; eventually, we will all die. Thomas Cole and Asher Durand were both landscape painters. One of Asher Durand's most famous paintings is called Kindred Spirits. The picture shows two men standing on a rock ledge and shaded by the branches of an enormous elm tree in the Catskill Mountains. The men depicted were the painter, Thomas Cole, and his dear friend, the poet William Cullen Bryant. A curio is something novel, rare, or bizarre. The Camperdown Elm I think, in connection with this weeping elm, of "Kindred Spirits" at the edge of a rock ledge overlooking a stream: Thanatopsis-invoking tree-loving Bryant conversing with Thomas Cole in Asher Durand's painting of them under the filigree of an elm overhead. No doubt they had seen other trees — lindens, maples and sycamores, oaks and the Paris street-tree, the horse-chestnut; but imagine their rapture, had they come on the Camperdown elm's massiveness and "the intricate pattern of its branches," arching high, curving low, in its mist of fine twigs. The Bartlett tree-cavity specialist saw it and thrust his arm the whole length of the hollowness of its torso, and there were six small cavities also. Props are needed and tree-food. It is still leafing; Still there. Mortal though. We must save it. It is our crowning curio. #OTD Today is the birthday of the country's most loved female painter, Georgia O'Keeffe, who was born on this day in 1887. During her incredible career as a painter, O'Keeffe created over 900 works of art. She is remembered for her iconic paintings of skulls and flowers. In 1938 when O'Keeffe's career was stalling, she was approached by an advertising agency about creating two paintings for the Hawaiian Pineapple Company (now Dole Food Company) to use in their advertising. O'Keefe was 51 years old when she took the nine weeks, all-expense-paid trip. O'Keeffe never did paint a pineapple. And gardeners will be amazed by this fact: Of all the floral paintings that O'Keefe created in Hawaii, exactly NONE were native to the island. Instead, O'Keeffe was drawn to tropicals that hailed from South America: Bougainvillea, Plumeria, Heliconia, Calliandra, and the White Bird of Paradise. It was Georgia O'Keeffe who said all of these quotes: "Nobody sees a flower—really—it is so small it takes time—we haven't time—and to see takes time, like to have a friend takes time. I decided that if I could paint that flower in a huge scale, you could not ignore its beauty. I hate flowers — I paint them because they're cheaper than models and they don't move! The days you work are the best days." #OTD On this day in 1929, Constance Spry - who went by Connie - unveiled her first floral shop window display, and she shocked London by using hedgerow flowers. Connie was a trailblazer. In the 1920s, she began creating flower arrangements for dinner parties. Her work made her an immediate hit with the socialites of her time. Her success led her to go into business, and she opened a flower shop as well as a flower arranging school. Connie designed the flowers for the coronation of H.M The Queen in 1953. During WWII, Connie gave lectures encouraging people to grow their own food. And, I thought you'd get a kick out of this June 20, 1945 article on Connie from the Corsicana Daily Sun out of Texas: "Constance Spry, the English woman who not only arranges and sells flowers but also grows them, carried on all through the blitz. On one occasion a bomb struck her house it trembled the roof sagged, but the building held and Constance went right on working. At the corner of Berkeley Square, the most elegant district of London lives Constance Spry with her flowers. She introduced London to a new kind of flower shop. There is a bridal department, and a department for boutonnieres and corsages; a department for fresh flowers; one for trimming on hats, and on day and evening dresses. In her greenhouse, Constance cultivates some rare and exotic beauties. They are used to decorate the homes and tables of clients, and they are also sent to recreation homes for soldiers, spreading joy to many. Unearthed Words "Walked for half an hour in the garden. A fine rain was falling, and the landscape was that of autumn. The sky was hung with various shades of gray, and mists hovered about the distant mountains - a melancholy nature. The leaves were falling on all sides like the last illusions of youth under the tears of irremediable grief. A brood of chattering birds were chasing each other through the shrubberies, and playing games among the branches, like a knot of hiding schoolboys. Every landscape is, as it were, a state of the soul, and whoever penetrates into both is astonished to find how much likeness there is in each detail." - Henri Frederic Amiel, Swiss philosopher & poet Today's book recommendation: The Surprising Life of Constance Spry by Sue Shephard I love love love the cover of this book! It shows Constance arranging flowers - ever the influential floral artist (and, btw - founder of the Cordon Bleu cooking school!) Let me read from Sue's introduction: "Constance possessed a rare combination of talents: As a writer, innovator, gardener and above all of the florist and above all as a floral artist. She was a gifted lecturer and at different periods in her life headed schools for the richest and for the poorest. At a time when most women's expectations were still limited, she believed in instilling in girls from all backgrounds the confidence and freedom to create beauty. The fact that Connie served high society never meant that she wish to be part of it nor that she was impressed by the breeding and wealth of her clients. She was never a name-dropper.... Her friend the writer and gardener Beverly Nichols once described the art of flower arranging as pre-spry and post-spry. She was brilliant at improvisation and enthusiastic user of new materials such as plastics and sticky tape – And, she invented the use of scrunched up chicken wire well hidden to anchors ring stands and branches that would seem to fly out of her arrangements without the benefit of gravity. Instead of the priceless crystal, silver, porcelain or other heirlooms that she might be invited to use at her client's homes, she preferred baking tins, meat plates or junk finds to put her flowers in. Her genius for creating beauty of the cheapest and simplest materials was legendary." What a story - a riveting biography. Right about now, you might be thinking about going through your cupboards and sideboards as you prepare for the holidays. Seldom-used items like punch bowls end up in the donation pile. But, you can repurpose your punchbowls and use them in your home conservatory - the spot where you keep your houseplants. If you have a larger pot that you're worried about ruining a table, or your hardwood floor or carpet, a punch bowl serving as a drip tray may be the perfect solution. Since most of my pots are terra cotta. I just place the terra cotta pot inside the punch bowl and viola! It certainly is an excellent way to add a little water reserve for your plant. And, if the punchbowl is clear glass, it won't add any visual disturbance to your design aesthetic. Another way to repurpose a punchbowl is to consider using it as an open-top terrarium. Something Sweet Reviving the little botanic spark in your heart #OTD On this day in 1909, The orange blossom was designated the state flower of Florida. The poet, William Livingston Larned was so inspired he wrote a poem called Florida's State Flower. And, the last little bit goes like this: "Whenever you see the spotless bud, You know tis Florida the fair. And wafted to you comes the scent Of all the blissful regions there. The rose may have its followers, The violet its standard, too; The fleur-de-lis and lily fair In tints of red and pink and blue; But just a scent, On pleasure bent, Of orange sweet, The nostrils greet, And from our dreams, the castles rise, Of groves and meadows 'neath calm skies." TALKING FLOWERS Heliconia Common Names: Imposter bird of paradise, false bird of paradise, wild plantains and lobster claws. Heliconia flower is not actually a flower but highly modified leaves and bracts. A bract is a leaf structure at the base of a flower. The trick about growing Heliconias outdoors is that the climate must be tropical. The far north of Australia is perfect because it's hotter and the more north, the hotter it gets. They are also really thirsty; give them roughly 120 ml of water a day. ; Mulch is really important.: cut the leaves off and put them under the plant to help with water retention.". Some of the commonly grown Heliconia species include Heliconia lennartiana; Heliconia Augusta, Heliconia bihai, (pictured right) Heliconia brasiliensis, Heliconia caribaea, Heliconia latispatha, Heliconia pendula, Heliconia psittacorum, Heliconia rostrata, Heliconia schiediana, and Heliconia wagneriana. DESIGN ELEMENTS Old Fashioned Plants for the Wet Tropics What is wet tropics? Is it your zone? High humidity, but not too much over 35 degrees C perhaps? In Australia, we would say that Cairns, Babinda, 'cyclone alley' but not the Atherton tablelands, would fit the bill. Darwin also, although, the Summer's are much hotter. So what are the plants that would love that? Los Swinton son un matrimonio ejemplar. Mónica se queda en casa cuidando el jardín mientras su marido dirige el comité ejecutivo de la Synthtank. El mundo está superpoblado pero eso no es un problema gracias a las comodidades de la realidad virtual y de la vida moderna. Además, Synthtank está a punto de hacer un gran avance en la creación de cerebros artificiales, las cosas no pueden ir mejor para el matrimonio… y su hijo. [semi-spoilers] "Supertoys Last All Summer Long" fue publicada por primera en 1969 en la revista de moda “Harper’s Bazaar” (una revista de 1867 que perteneció al propio Randolph Hearst, el que sale caracterizado en Ciudadano Kane). Posteriormente ha sido recogida en numerosas recopilaciones; es la historia que inspiró la película Inteligencia Artificial. Más bien, inspiró a Kubrik un guión, basado en la historia, que acabó llevando a la pantalla Spielberg – nunca sabremos si la versión original sería tan “melodramática” como la que terminó facturando el director que tan buenas horas de divertimento nos ha dado con su cine ochentero a generaciones y generaciones. En cualquier caso la película se inspira en la historia original ya que ésta transcurre en un solo día. Me queda una duda poderosa. El niño dice algo sobre acordarse de aquel momento en el jardín, con el tiempo detenido… puede ser una figura poética pero mientras lo estaba leyendo (lo había leído de pequeño y ya no me acordaba de nada) pensé “ajá! Así que el hijo original murió y trasladaron su memoria a un androide por eso recuerda ese momento de esa manera!” Pero no, me pasé de listo. En realidad nunca tuvieron un hijo sino que estaban deseando tenerlo pero las duras leyes anti natalidad se lo impedían. Tenemos dos componentes de un futuro distópico más o menos cyberpunk: superpoblación (mala calidad de vida excepto para el 1% afortunado, como los Swinton, o esos empresarios de la corporación que comen como en “La Gran Comilona” y evitan problemas instalándose una tenia robot, que imagen tan patética!) y androides/robots… replicas. Sustitutos. Sosias. Fabricación de robots como sustitutos de lo real. Y de regalo, la inteligencia artificial, y la misma reflexión que Dick a menudo nos plantea: ¿qué nos hace humanos? Si han sido capaces de unir la carne con la fibra “sintética”, si el pobre niño robot no sabe que lo es.. que le diferencia de un niño real? Fue programado para ser el niño de Mónica – sólo quiere el amor de su mamá! Y su mamá, le rechaza… es terrible! Es un dramón gigantesco. Primero te traen al mundo y luego… si no te quieren, te joden! O te quieren o te destrozan. Por que tú ya estás vivo, ya vas a vivir no precisamente poco tiempo (lo digo por el final de la peli). Es como con las mascotas. El matrimonio tiene al niño igual que a una mascota a la que abandonas cuando te cansas. Pero no, las mascotas y los seres duran todo el verano, el siguiente, el siguiente,.. La superficialidad del matrimonio, una vez que he empatizado con el androide, me mata. Igual con Teddy: La madre observa "impasible como el robot baja las escaleras con su cuerpo rechoncho" ¿cómo no te vas a divertir y a pensar "qué adorable!" viendo esa criatura tratar de descender escalones que no están hecho a su tamaño? Luego coge a Teddy en brazos pero es sólo para poder hablarle mejor porque no parece inspirarle nada de ternura la imagen poéticos sintética que nos da Aldiss: " la mujer pudo sentir la vibración de su corazón artificial". Es como el ronroneo y a ella le da igual. Desde luego los personajes humanos de la historia tratan a los seres pensantes sintéticos como si fueran objetos, y eso me enfurece. ¡Derechos para los replicantes ya! Teddy se queda en la mesa con los brazos abiertos en un "eterno abrazo" y ella pasa de todo, le dice: "no me llames mamá".. Este rechazo parece importarle menos al osito que a Danniels, porque en principio es una forma sintética más simple, el niño es la segunda generación de robots de la que habla el marido en su discurso... por eso le duele más? LA verdad es que a mí como lector me dan pena los dos a partes iguales. Uno es más si.ple que el otro pero a mí Teddy tb me da pena, no soy capaz se verlo como objeto aunque él mismo no se dé cuenta de su triste realidad. Si lo pienso, creo que eso puede tener que ver con nuestra tendencia a humanizar las cosas. Es el pensamiento mágico de los niños y de las tribus dar un espíritu a lo que es un objeto (el "animismo"). Y aquí habría otra posible explicación a porque Mónica y el niño no consiguen "comunicarse" (ambos lo expresan así) aunque un poco pillada por los pelos (en realidad me apetece sacar la palabra:). La Teoría del "Valle Inquietante". Dice así: en cuanto a la construcción de objetos que representen vida desde el principio de la historia se han creado figuritas, existen muñecos para los niños, etc. Pero están muy lejos de poderse confundir con el objeto real. Dentro de la corriente de la robótica que trata de construir robots lo más parecidos a la realidad (esto no siempre es el caso en todas las áreas de la robótica, el diseño depende de los objetivos) saben que cuanto más parecido a una forma de vida real mayor empatía se genera entre humano y robot... a no ser que la artificialidad del robot sea demasiado indistinguible de algo real. Estar frente a este tipo de robot produciría por el contrario un sentimiento de inquietud que llevaría al rechazo (rechazo que cae sobre Danniel y Teddy en el relato). Se le llama " valle inquietante" porque es la forma gráfica que tomaría una línea que marcase la empatía que genera el robot conforme más se parece a un humano (o, "más real es"): iría subiendo y subiendo hasta que al llegar al punto de máxima semejanza caería de golpe a cero. Normalmente se representa como que vuelve a subir pero ahora mismo no se explicar esa parte de la gráfica lo siento. Otro comentario gratuito: el tema de que los nuevos cerebros estén conectados a la Red Mundial de Datos: es un poco anticipación de IAs como al de Her o las que tenemos ahora (Siri, Cortana) del internet de las cosas, del buscador Wolfram… ya lo vimos en “Campaña Publicitaria”. Otra cosas que destacar gratuitamente: la idea de los súper juguetes no inteligentes que SynthTank lleva comercializando casi diez años, entre ellos los dinosaurios en miniatura... ! Buah! Cómo molaría, no? Siempre he pensado que, si la vida tuviera un creador y un orden y por tanto cada cosa su lugar, esta muy bien por parte de quien diseño todo esto incluir entre los animales uno que sea esponjosa, suave, gracioso, cariñoso, que ya sólo mirarlo molase... el concepto peluche aplicado a los nichos ecológicos. Peluche para nosotros, claro. Y ahí esta el gato. Gracias Dios, o Darwin.. Aunque el hecho de que existan gatitos para mi es la mayor evidencia de que quizá existe Dios y el mundo es a la medida del hombre. No tendría porque existir el animal que cumpla esta función tan hermosa :) je. Aunque que existiera un gato grande y morado con orejas y colas larguísimas como el de Ozymandias en Watchmen eso siempre lo deseé. No se puede tener todo supongo. En un episodio de Nathan Never sale un robot-peluche sintético con todos los añadidos más guais. Otra cosa: cuando Daniel (bastante de sopetón por cierto) pregunta a Teddy (recuerdo que Teddy es el nombre que dan los anglosajones a los ositos de peluche -teddy bear) cómo saber "qué es real" es muy auténtica respuesta de robot de la ciencia ficción el tratar de argumentar con un sofisma, un razonamiento lógico con premisas: "mamá lleva reloj, los relojes miden el tiempo, mamá es real, el tiempo es real" (referencia mítica de este proceder en Dark Star, opera prima de Carpenter donde consiguen derrotar a una bomba inteligente mediante un planteamiento lógico pervertido. Otros robots desarrollan neurosis a raíz de las conclusiones que sacan, como Hal de 2001 cuando se da cuenta de su existencia/mortalidad) No lo iba a subir porque no me gustó mucho cómo quedó (básicamente aunque ajusto el input level del micro siguen saliendo algunos artefactos como los que habéis escuchado) pero leí la noticia del fallecimiento de Brian Aldiss esta semana y por eso lo hago (espero que si no para dormir se pueda seguir la historia al menos). Es un autor al que tenía un cariño enorme principalmente porque cuando tenía 14/15 años, misma época en que descubría por ejemplo el señor de los anillos, leí “Heliconia”. Heliconia es una trilogía con tres tomos, titulados como estaciones del año. Está basada en un planeta del mismo nombre (es un tipo de planta también) situado en un sistema binario. El planeta y su sol más cercano giran en torno a otro mayor y más lejano. Esta última circunvolución toma ~1400 años terrestres (estoy recordando la cifra a ojímetro). Eso significa que tienen estaciones muy largas. Además, dos especies han evolucionado hacia la conciencia. Unos son homínidos (y hay varios tipos) y otros evolucionaron a partir de los bovinos (en serio). Cada especie se adapta mejor a una temporada, la cálida o la fría, y conforme se suceden las vueltas a la estrella civilizaciones de una y otra especie surgen y se derrumban perdiéndose sus restos en la nieve o con el paso del tiempo. (rollo Eterno Retorno). El autor construye reinos, personajes, costumbres, ritos, imaginarios, creencias, flora, fauna,.. con un nivel de detalle propio del divertimento puro de un Asperger, muy como es El Señor de los Anillos también. En este audio, intrigado por sus lecturas, el enormérrimo Ijon Tichy viaja al planeta de Enteropia, habitado por unos seres de luz (literalmente) en una zona muy remota de la galaxia, y del que se cuentan fermosas historias sobre sus Curdlos y sus gentes. [semi-spoilers] Otra vez 1957. Este viaje es más Diario que los demás… ¿Será un amago? Los relatos cortos editados como “Diarios de las Estrellas” tienen como protagonista a nuestro querido héroe Ijon (que figura también en otros cuentos fuera de dicho compendio) pero fueron escritos en varios momentos a lo largo de más de una década. Son viajes, son diarios, son memorias… No está claro que Lem pretendiese compilarlos o darles forma en un volumen único cuando empezó en 1954. El principio con la enciclopedia me temo que será un poco rollo. Mola más a partir del minuto cinco cuando ya llega a Enteropia. Bueno a mí me hace gracia ese frikismo académico de Ijon devorando información. Es una gran broma sobre cómo nos culturizmos enormemente leyendo libros de antropología que hablan extensamente de una tribu de una isla (por ejemplo) y como te puedes hacer un experto y saber muchísimas palabras largas pero lo harás desde tu sofá y jamás conocerás; y a la vez una broma de lo aburrido que puede ser el formato académico – o cuando nos apasionamos por algo pero en “modo asperger”. Me hizo gracia que dice “Los datos han rodado” en vez de los “los dados han rodado” o Alea jacta est. Investigué mi latín a ver si se podía decir Alea Data Est, como para que lo piensen los científricos cuando hayan hecho un experimento y se puedan reír aunque sea un poco para dentro pero me temo que sería Datum jacta est (fácil me equivoco) y no suena a juego de palabras ni nada que pueda compartir con nadie. Es encantador una raza de gente que se ilumina para transmitir las emociones. En vez de expresiones faciales, en vez de sonreírte, brillan bonito! Es genial. Tiene un par de frases super cursis describiendo este planeta de gente luminosa, mola. La cantidad de anuncios por la carretera me hizo recordar “Campaña publicitaria”, claro. Me gusta la descripción del paso por la aduana porque es en el espacio con seres de todos los tipos (“Hum! Así que vertebrado eh? “) pero puedes sentir como si fuera una frontera de aquí. O en las actividades turísticas que hace, como te apuntas a una visita y al final resulta que es en un grupo y hay más gente haciendo o mismo que tú. O cómo tiene que aceptar un guía en el idioma de Júpiter como el más cercano al idioma de la Tierra (supongo que si eras polaco te pasaba mucho que te daban como solución guías y folletos en ruso). Y el safari. Cómo le vigilan la bomba y que todo marcha, como cuando te vas a Panamá y hace deporte de aventuras o te sacas un carnet PADI de buceo en Koh Tao (por ejemplo). Imaginaros pegaros un viaje así (por la Tierra) pero en los años 50/60… Tremendo como quiere hacerse pasar por uno de allí y poder pedir ese artefacto que no sabe para que se utiliza sin que se le note que es de fuera yo lo he hecho: je ve an baguet sirvuple). Las palabras que se inventa. El “estorgo”. Como si fuera un concepto tipo selva o tundra de toda la vida. Los famosos estorgos. Un ultimísimo comentario gratuito: Qué bien está que, siendo todo una comedia, Lem se inventa una planeta con un ecosistema que tiene sentido! La raza de los Curdlos, esos seres gigantescos, ayudó durante su etapa prehistórica a los habitantes del planeta, permitiendo su evolución a un estadío superior. Muchas veces la ciencia ficción mainstream no nos acostumbra a esto. Se inventan planetas porque sí. En Avatar, seres azules porque les apetece, un par de plantas y un par de animales pero que no tienen una lógica interna. O incluso en Interstellar, que mola: porqué un planeta con nubes de metano sólidas y flotantes? Porqué? Para mí el ejemplo magnófíco de esto (hay muchos) es la excepcional trilogía Heliconia, de Brian Adlwiss, un libro al que puede que tenga especia afecto porque lo leí en la adolescencia pero que es un gran Señor de los Anillos de la ciencia ficción. Aldwiss ese inventa todo un nuevo planeta, con dos razas inteligentes dos, una humanoide y otra evolucionada a partir de los bovinos (sí), con sus creencias, sus infraestructuras, etc. No es una enumeración sin sentido del tipo de moneda que usaban y los nombres de los reyes que tenían: todo cuadra, todo tiene un sentido dentro del sistema, incluso su mística o los dioses que se han creado responden al medio en el que viven. Es un planeta con un sol pero que ambos giran en torno a otro sol mucho más grande y lejano, tardando como 1500 años en dar una Gran Vuelta. Eso hace que las estaciones duren siglos en vez de meses y condiciona la vida en el planeta y el auge y declive de ambas especies, que parecen atrapadas en un bucle condenadas a olvidar el pasado y volver renacer cuál Sísifo filogenético cósmico. ----- Diarios de las Estrellas (Dzienniki gwiazdowe) son una serie de historias cortas escritas por el enorme Stanislaw Lem. La mayor parte lo fueron entre 1954 y 1971, aunque se han ido incorporando nuevos capítulos escritos hasta en el 93. No alarmarse. Viaje Séptimo es la primera de las entregas en la edición de 1971, que compilaba los diferentes escritos que ya existían. Son historias independientes. No es tan Las mil y una Noches como lo fue Ciberíada, pero sí muy Los viajes de Gulliver. Recuerdo grandes dosis de humor e ironía, planteamientos cifi hardcore (esta historia tiene pinta de haber inspirado uno de los capítulos de la primera temporada de Enano Rojo) pero tratados con humor, como riéndose quizá de la ciencia ficción de su época, pero consiguiendo unos niveles de profunda reflexión y agudeza mental como sólo Lem nos da. En este audio, intrigado por sus lecturas, el enormérrimo Ijon Tichy viaja al planeta de Enteropia, habitado por unos seres de luz (literalmente) en una zona muy remota de la galaxia, y del que se cuentan fermosas historias sobre sus Curdlos y sus gentes. [semi-spoilers] Otra vez 1957. Este viaje es más Diario que los demás… ¿Será un amago? Los relatos cortos editados como “Diarios de las Estrellas” tienen como protagonista a nuestro querido héroe Ijon (que figura también en otros cuentos fuera de dicho compendio) pero fueron escritos en varios momentos a lo largo de más de una década. Son viajes, son diarios, son memorias… No está claro que Lem pretendiese compilarlos o darles forma en un volumen único cuando empezó en 1954. El principio con la enciclopedia me temo que será un poco rollo. Mola más a partir del minuto cinco cuando ya llega a Enteropia. Bueno a mí me hace gracia ese frikismo académico de Ijon devorando información. Es una gran broma sobre cómo nos culturizmos enormemente leyendo libros de antropología que hablan extensamente de una tribu de una isla (por ejemplo) y como te puedes hacer un experto y saber muchísimas palabras largas pero lo harás desde tu sofá y jamás conocerás; y a la vez una broma de lo aburrido que puede ser el formato académico – o cuando nos apasionamos por algo pero en “modo asperger”. Me hizo gracia que dice “Los datos han rodado” en vez de los “los dados han rodado” o Alea jacta est. Investigué mi latín a ver si se podía decir Alea Data Est, como para que lo piensen los científricos cuando hayan hecho un experimento y se puedan reír aunque sea un poco para dentro pero me temo que sería Datum jacta est (fácil me equivoco) y no suena a juego de palabras ni nada que pueda compartir con nadie. Es encantador una raza de gente que se ilumina para transmitir las emociones. En vez de expresiones faciales, en vez de sonreírte, brillan bonito! Es genial. Tiene un par de frases super cursis describiendo este planeta de gente luminosa, mola. La cantidad de anuncios por la carretera me hizo recordar “Campaña publicitaria”, claro. Me gusta la descripción del paso por la aduana porque es en el espacio con seres de todos los tipos (“Hum! Así que vertebrado eh? “) pero puedes sentir como si fuera una frontera de aquí. O en las actividades turísticas que hace, como te apuntas a una visita y al final resulta que es en un grupo y hay más gente haciendo o mismo que tú. O cómo tiene que aceptar un guía en el idioma de Júpiter como el más cercano al idioma de la Tierra (supongo que si eras polaco te pasaba mucho que te daban como solución guías y folletos en ruso). Y el safari. Cómo le vigilan la bomba y que todo marcha, como cuando te vas a Panamá y hace deporte de aventuras o te sacas un carnet PADI de buceo en Koh Tao (por ejemplo). Imaginaros pegaros un viaje así (por la Tierra) pero en los años 50/60… Tremendo como quiere hacerse pasar por uno de allí y poder pedir ese artefacto que no sabe para que se utiliza sin que se le note que es de fuera yo lo he hecho: je ve an baguet sirvuple). Las palabras que se inventa. El “estorgo”. Como si fuera un concepto tipo selva o tundra de toda la vida. Los famosos estorgos. Un ultimísimo comentario gratuito: Qué bien está que, siendo todo una comedia, Lem se inventa una planeta con un ecosistema que tiene sentido!
