On this episode of Prisoners of Rock and Roll, we're jumping in our musical memory machine and going back 30 years to 1995. Rock and roll still ruled the charts and alternative music was still a thing. We got great albums from Alice in Chains, No Doubt, Mad Season, Oasis, Ozzy, and White Zombie. SIlverchair, the Foo Fighters, the Deftones, Jewel, Radiohead, Alanis Morissette, and Garbage all released their debut albums. TLC warned us against chasing Waterfalls. Coolio was living in a gangsta's paradise, and groups also released a handful of songs that we still hear today: Hey Man Nice Shot, Peaches, and those songs by Spacehog, Better Than Ezra, Elastica. Several members of the Wu Tang Clan released solo albums. R&B kinda sucked with a few exceptions. And there was weird stuff like the Macarena, Scatman John, and Cotton Eye Joe were on the radio. We're going cover as much of it as we can in this throwback episode of Prisoners of Rock and Roll, so let's hit it. Episode Playlist & Other Stuff Check out our episode playlist here. If you ever wondered what it would look like if one of your favorite action/horror flicks from the 90's was made in Africa, then this ones for you!
In this year's final “Shocktober” episode of the AIPT Movies podcast, Alex, Tim, and Matt discuss one of the better examples of a TV show-turned-movie, the bloody and surprisingly fun, Tales From The Crypt: Demon Knight!Single-location horror! Impressive practical FX and gore! Countless quotable lines! Fun bookends from the Crypt Keeper himself! A loveable cast that includes Dick Miller, William Sadler, CCH Pounder, Jada Pinkett-Smith, and Billy Zane in his greatest role! Unnecessary sexiness! A wonderful-yet-failed cinematic experiment not unlike Tarantino and Rodriguez's Grindhouse! Comic booky demon lore and mischievous ghouls that would pair well with the Evil Dead series! Possibly accidental Aliens and Terminator vibes! A delicious mix of horror, camp sensibility, and action tropes, this movie has it all! Did we mention how good Billy Zane is? In addition, the gang give spoiler-free thoughts on several Halloween-season viewing options, such as: An American Werewolf in London, The Howling, Samuel Bodin's Cobweb, Critters, Frankenhooker, The Frighteners, Trick ‘r Treat, 1980's Prom Night, 2015's We Are Still Here, The Collector, The Collection, and Saw X!You can find AIPT Movies on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. As always, if you enjoy the podcast, be sure to leave us a positive rating, subscribe to the show, and tell your friends! The AIPT Movies podcast brings you the latest in movie news, reviews, and more! Hosted by supposed “industry vets,” Alex Harris, Tim Gardiner, and Matt Paul, the show gives you a peek behind the scenes from three filmmakers with oddly nonexistent filmographies. You can find Alex on Instagram and Twitter @ActionHarris. Matt is a terrific artist that you can find on Instagram @no_wheres_ville. Tim can't be found on social media because he doesn't exist. If you have any questions or suggestions for the AIPT Movies crew, they can be reached at aiptmoviespod@gmail.com, or you can find them on Twitter @AIPTmoviesPod.Theme song is “We Got it Goin On” by Cobra Man.
Interview by Kris PetersEver since leaving Nine Inch Nails to form Filter back in 1993, the name Richard Patrick has been synonymous with industrial tinged rock. With their debut album Short Bus spawning the hugely successful single Hey Man Nice Shot, Filter's trajectory started on the up and has only soared higher over the ensuing years.Despite having to overcome potentially crippling personal problems along the way, Patrick has managed to constantly maintain the rage musically. He flirted briefly playing alongside Dean and Robert DeLeo of Stone Temple Pilots and Ray Luzier of Korn in the project Army Of Anyone, but after a triumphant return to Filter with 2008s Anthem For The Damned Patrick rekindled his love affair with music and the band that gave him life. After a seven year wait, Filter is set to return once more with The Algorithm on August 25, bringing Filter into the modern music era while still endorsing the band's signature sound.HEAVY caught up with Patrick to find out more."I am really psyched," he enthused of The Algorithm. "I think it's definitely a great body of work and I'm excited. It reminds me of the old days, like Title Of Record, that era, and I'm super pumped and can't wait to hear the reaction from the fans."We ask him to dive deeper into the album musically."Well, I love working with new artists when working on Filter records," he began. "I love working with Sam Tinnezs and Zack Munowitz and my bandmates Johnny Radtke, Elias Mallin and Bobby Miller, and it's... it was really fun because I wanted to make something that was really agro and crazy, but something that also had hooks. Something that you could walk away with and hum to yourself, and I think we did that."In the full interview, Patrick talks more about what to expect on The Algorithm, the singles released and how they represent the album, the album title and where it comes from, developing the album musically, his guest artists and what they brought to the table, the early days of Filter, how his vision for the band has changed over the years, their 30th anniversary and reflecting on his achievements, his upcoming tour with Rob Zombie, Alice Cooper and Ministry and more.

This week we're touching on a VHS classic that was a staple of one of the hosts' movie-watching days, but not so much for the other. And that's not unexpected, because this movie was branded a failure pretty much from its inception. Yet even massive studio intervention and an astronomically high budget due to its star can't fully tank this movie, because the concept, the directing, and the performances are still too fun to ignore. And as iconic as his previous films had been, Jim Carrey's doing some of his best comedic work in this movie because he gets to also be a little terrifying. CLICK TO SUBSCRIBE ON YOUR FAVORITE PODCATCHER CONTENT WARNING: Discussion of assault weapons, gunfire, tactical weapons, guns, shootouts, robbery, crime, depression, sex workers, murder, grisly death. This is one of those movies that everyone tells you to see, and yet so many people probably haven't seen it. But wow, was it worth the wait. The maestro of crime dramas, Michael Mann, took nearly 15 years to make his magnum opus, and he barely missed. In fact, our biggest complaint about this movie is that we wanted more, more than the 2 hours and 50 minutes of run time to be able to explore even more of the characters and world Mann created. And if that's not enough, this film dared to pit two modern legends in opposing roles, and did so with deftness, thoughtfulness, and subtlety - something that can be harder to come by in other Pacino and DeNiro movies. Hello, kiddies. Are you ready for your deadtime story? Gobbledyween 2020 comes to a close as A/V writer-director Joseph Lewis joins Paul and Arlo in the Cryptkeeper's lair to discuss Ernest R. Dickerson's 1995 frightfest Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight. These hodunk, podunk, well-then-there motherfuckers discuss the insane cast, including William Sadler, Billy Zane, Dick Miller, and CCH Pounder; the importance of Jada Pinkett Smith's heroine Jeryline; Dickerson's use of light and color; and why this is the perfect mid-'90s time capsule. In the mid 90's, Filter released the single "Hey man nice shot", and it was instantly shrouded in rumors. Who was this new band? Who were they singing about? Kurt Cobain had tragically lost his life the year before and that was who everyone speculated the song was about. But the true story and inspiration of the song was a man who had made a stand in the late 80's On this episode we cover that story and discuss how dreamy Filter front man, Richard Patrick is. Many know Richard Patrick as the only static member of the band Filter. Prior to the formation of Filter, Richard cut his teeth in a band called Nine Inch Nails. In addition to hits like "Hey Man Nice Shot" and "Take A Picture," Filter's music has been featured in everything from Tales from the Crypt's Demon Knight to Spawn to the X-Files -- both the series and the movies. Filter's platinum-selling 1999 sophomore album, Title of Record, recently received a deluxe double vinyl reissue through Craft Recordings for its 20th anniversary. We spoke with the band's frontman and singer via Skype about all this and more.
On this week’s installment of That’s Odd, Chris looks at the weird way many pop songs have catchy and upbeat melodies and music, but when you listen closely, the dark stories they represent are a stark contrast to the brighter sounds that keep people coming back for more. And, Johnny discusses a story in which the apparent ghostly apparition of a tragic car accident helps solve a missing person’s case months after the event. This week, Amanda and the Winchestbears watched Season 1, episode 6, “Skin.” Amanda gushes about the opening scene and the crew who made it possible for 3 times longer than it takes to just watch the thing (which you can do on our website: SPN 1.06 "Skin" Opening Scene Video). Dean recaps the somewhat disgusting plot for us, Sammy gives us some lore on Supernatural’s version of shapeshifters, and Amanda relates some backstory and a bonus clip of Filter’s “Hey Man Nice Shot” for those of you watching a streaming/digital version with replaced music. (And if you’d like to find out more about music licensing and replacement, check out Previously.TV’s Making the Sausage podcast on the subject: Music Licensing: Something Edgy, Like Coldplay.) Then Sammy crowns an LVP, Dean tells us why the opening scene has the Best Song of the Episode, and Sammy and Dean let us know why Plushies Make Everything Better.
Oh, how we wanted this song to be be about basketball... Alas, the true subject matter of the song is much sadder than any free throw brick Shaq ever threw up. And it's nastier than any dunk King James has thrown down. The truth is, no sports analogy can prepare you for the dark heart of Filter's 1995 alternative hit, "Hey Man Nice Shot". https://www.patreon.com/rss/earfoolpodcast?auth=YKLY39UqS8tlql2lQnxtsZs_d9jaVNkK
