From MPR News, Art Hounds are members of the Minnesota arts community who look beyond their own work to highlight what's exciting in local art. Their recommendations are lightly edited from the original submission.Americana in the Historic AuditoriumJean Shore of Balsam Lake, Wis., recommends crossing into Wisconsin for an evening of American roots music. Minnesota singer-songwriters Emmy Woods, Sarah Morris and Laura Hugo will perform at The Historic Auditorium in St. Croix Falls this Saturday, June 7 at 7 p.m.Jean says: Each performer brings a unique voice and style to the stage, blending folk and country and heartfelt storytelling. But what makes this even more exciting is the venue itself. The Historic Auditorium was built in 1916 and was recently renovated in 2023, and it's quickly becoming a cultural hub for this area.— Jean ShoreA Sondheim musical at the Ritz TheaterTwin Cities theater maker Kurt Engh recommends seeing Stephen Sondheim's musical “Passion,” staged by Theater Latté Da at the Ritz Theater. Written by the same team that created “Into the Woods,” the show runs through July 13.Kurt says: “Passion” is one of Stephen Sondheim's lesser-known musicals, but one of his most complex and most honest and emotional. It is a melodramatic story set in 1860s Italy during the unification of Italy. It is an uneven love triangle between a beautiful married woman, a very handsome army captain and a in the terms of the musical, a “troubled, ugly woman.” And it is about how love and desire are reflected through beauty and beauty standards. It is a very fascinating musical in that it is directed as almost a chamber opera at a breakneck speed. There are no applause breaks. It does not let you go. It just keeps moving.— Kurt EnghImprov Festival Moves to Phoenix TheaterMichael Krefting of Minneapolis loves the improv scene in the Twin Cities, and he recommends the Twin Cities Improv Festival, happening Thursday through Sunday, June 8. This is the annual festival's first year at the Phoenix Theater in Minneapolis, following the closing of HUGE Improv Theater last year.Michael says: They have artists coming in from all over the world, a couple artists coming in from Japan. There are a lot of local names. When they select the artists for the festival, they're always trying to get the local groups that are doing either the most interesting things or doing something new and creative that's picking up steam. The whole improv community is very welcoming. And I would, I would come ready to not just laugh but also feel. I would say to expect the unexpected!— Michael Krefting(Want more improv? Krefting also recommends Improv A Go-Go at Strike Theater in Minneapolis. Every first, second, and fourth Sunday, four or five improv groups are chosen by lottery to perform, offering an affordable evening of “yes, and” energy.)
We explore friendship and emotional well-being through conversations with two sets of special guests who share powerful insights on maintaining happiness even when others aren't kind.• Emma and Ada demonstrate how friendship can thrive despite attending different schools by making intentional time for each other• Best friends don't need to be exclusive – having other friendships is healthy and necessary• The Fishmans share how their popular "Bucket Filler" books originated from Nechama's kindergarten bullying experience• Everyone has an invisible emotional bucket that fills with good feelings when full and empties when sad• When someone is mean, it's because their bucket is empty – understanding this helps you not take it personally• Filling others' buckets through kindness automatically fills your own bucket too• Being "bully-proof" means staying happy despite others' unkindness• Finding people who make you feel good is more important than forcing yourself into unfriendly groups• Simple acts like smiles and compliments can significantly impact someone's day• Parents should work through schools rather than directly contacting bullies' parents

Teri Granahan, technically, it started as middle child syndrome and a few basement plays which eventually got compounded with the high school crowning of "Most Funny" and "Class Cut Up" that set the wheels in motion. Truthfully, it was a survival skill because "everybody likes the funny kid." The Big Apple I started my comedy career in early 2000 while living in NYC. Right out of the gate I had some good signs- I won New York Comedy Club's Best New Talent in 2003. And went on to perform at Stand Up NY, Gotham Comedy Club, Broadway Comedy Club, Comedy Cellar trying to get into the scene. Fortunate enough to have shared the stages with some of today's greats like Jim Gaffigan, Lisa Lampinelli, the late, Patrice O'Neil...and so many others! Then I ran into comedian Dave Russo who gave me my first real professional gigs. The irony is that we both graduated together from Wilkes University and had communication classes together. Years later ran into each other performing at Stand Up NY! He took me under his wing where I opened for him at a few colleges like University of New Haven, Wilkes University a few times and gave me some shows in the Boston area with the famous Lenny Clarke! My Home Coming Fast forward a gazillion years my journey through comedy got me on MTV (Apartment 2F with the Sklar Brother's); a close but no cigar audition for AXS LIVE Gotham (great story!). And was making my climb through the circuit. Back in the Poconos: I won Best of Reader polls in 2011 from Electric City and Diamond City polls. Became the house mc at Wisecrackers for a few years when they moved into the Casino, where I also had a weekly spot on 105 the River. Culminating into the final brass ring of making it to the semi finals- TOP 10 females in the industry- in the Ladies of Laughter Competition NYC in 2016. Punchline Philly's Really Funny Comedians (Who Happen to Be Females) Comedy Works Bristol Funniest Females After sharpening my skills running tons of open mics over the years. I moved on to produce comedy shows of a wide variety from fundraisers for several hundreds to small little pubs for almost 10 years. I've performed in clubs, colleges and theaters up and down the east coast, including Gotham NY, Stand Up NY, New York Comedy Club, Improv (when it was running in NYC), Broadway Comedy Club, Comedy Cellar, Helium, Punchline Philly, Comedy Cabaret, Sarcasm, Wisecrackers rooms, Wilkes University, Marywood University, New Haven University, Lackawanna College, Penn State University; Ritz Theater, Clemens Center, Waverly Store Front Theater and some theater in Delaware. Also going on record with The Flaming Crab and Quaker Steak & Lube...because you ain't sh*t til you can play those rooms! #terigranahan #standupcomedian #comedy #livewithcdp #talkshow #chrispomay #barrycullenchevrolet #wellingtonbrewery #youtube #applepodcasts https://terigranahan.com/ https://beacons.ai/chrisdpomay https://www.cameo.com/chrispomay https://www.youtube.com/@chrispomaylivewithcdpsport5517/streams

Choreographer, Jolene Konkel, joins us to tell her story about finding God but discovering a lack of acceptance in the Christian culture that welcomed her dance talents. This led her to be a pioneer in merging the arts and faith in new ways that broke down walls her peers had about concert dance being used to reflect the heart of God. This also led her to her mission of equipping and encouraging "the orphaned artist" to discover there is a place and purpose for them for God to use their gifts. Jolene has an undergrad degree in Christian studies(emphasis in theater) from North Central University and an M.F.A. in Performance and Choreography from Univ. of Milwaukee. She is the founder of Youth With a Mission(YWAM's) global Univ. of the Nations School of Dance Studies. She is choreographer and adjunct faculty in the University of Northwestern's Theater program and has choreographed over 30 local musical productions. She has been showcased in the DanceMakers series at UWM, Choreographer's Evening at the Ritz Theater, Jazz Here, Jazz Now at the Univ. of MN and Rhythmically Speaking at The Southern Theater. Her most recent work was presented at the 2016 MN Fringe Festival.
