Parvati Shallow - From Surviving a Cult to Winning Survivor

This week, the show is joined by Parvati Shallow, two-time Survivor winner, current cast member on The Traitors, and author of Nice Girls Don’t Win: How I Burned it All Down to Claim My Power. Parvati shares about her childhood growing up in the Kashi Ashram, a high-control commune led by Joyce Green–or, as she made everyone call her, “Ma”. She discusses Joyce’s origin story and how she claimed to have experienced the stigmata, Joyce’s relationship with Ram Dass (who he later said he’d been bamboozled by her), and how she became increasingly coercive and controlling, including taking children from their parents and instructing members to scam their own families for money.Parvati reflects on how her parents escaped but ultimately came back to the group, what it was like living on the commune and being wild in nature, and how surviving that environment shaped her instincts, resilience, and ability to read people–skills that later helped her win Survivor, and how she’s now unpacking what it means to reclaim her power on her own terms. Parvati talks about her strange childhood informed her decision to compete on Survivor, how reality TV has evolved, and how she has evolved with it. She's been a contestant on The Traitors, Deal or No Deal Island, and five seasons of Survivor, and being seen as a vixen-coded "villain" has given her a singular look into the expectations for women on screen and off. Nice Girls Don't Get The Corner Office! We saboteren ons eigen succes. The opposite of a nice girl isn't a bitch — it's a winning woman. The difference is that a nice girl acts in ways that are designed to make others like her, and a winning woman acts in ways that ensure her goals are met by knowing what she wants, having clarity about where she's headed, and achieving both through high likability and emotional intelligence.”Evolueren van een “nice girl” naar een zelfverzekerde, krachtige vrouw, dus.

Let's face it: it's hard to talk about money. We are so conditioned to think that bringing it up, even to family and friends, is tacky and rude that we'd rather not talk about it at all. However, what we need to realize now is that money is power! And avoiding the discussion only takes away our control over our finances and wealth. In this episode, Vivian Tu joins Liz and Andresa to bring a fresh take on financial literacy. She discusses how open and honest conversations can help overcome our outdated mindsets about money. She also shares practical budgeting and money management strategies we can use to gain more confidence in our finances. Vivian Tu aka @YourRichBFF is an ex-Wall Street Trader turned financial literacy creator. She didn't like how the topic of finance only seem to cater to old, rich, and male audiences. Now, Vivian is on a mission to make money talk fun by blending topics like student debt and home-buying with anecdotes about celebs and funny stories. With over 1 million followers on TikTok, she aims to bring inclusive and easy-to-understand personal finance and investing content to women and underserved communities as well as to the next generation of BFFs.Quotes• “Our financial services industry has largely served audiences that are male and pale, and unfortunately for women, for people of color, for marginalized communities, like the LGBTQ community, we haven't been given this education.” (9:52-10:05)• “Not having those conversations puts us in a worse spot than if we were to able to benchmark ourselves essentially against our peers and get information and share that important knowledge." (10:26-10:27)• “I actually prefer to deposit the majority of my paycheck into one account and then set aside money for savings that just automatically goes elsewhere. I don't even look at it. I pretend like it didn't come in. And then I never think about it again. But because I don't think about it, the number I see on my banking app is smaller. So I don't feel that false sense of comfort so that I go and spend frivolously.” (14:52-15:14)• “We, as women have always been told, we are overspenders. We love to go on shopping sprees. We max out those credit cards and we have been told the way to create a surplus in the amount of money we have is to cut back. Don't buy that coffee. Don't buy that dress. Do nothing for yourself. Basically, be miserable. Whereas our male counterparts have been told to, you know, grow your wealth, invest, be an entrepreneur.” (19:33-19:56)• “You can only save as much as you earn.” (20:21-20:23) • “We love to read tabloids and talk about pop culture. Why can't talking about money be just like that?” (24:59-25:05)Connect with Vivian:Website: https://www.yourrichbff.com/IG: https://www.instagram.com/your.richbff/Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgbXT2QuTj4SYxaWCs3vuAwTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@yourrichbff Resources mentioned: Nice Girls Don't Get the Corner Office by Lois P. Dr. Lois Frankel is the President of Corporate Coaching International, the author of the best-selling book “Nice Girls Don't Speak Up or Stand Out”, among other books. She's also an internationally-recognized expert in the field of leadership development for women. Lois sits down with host Molly McGrath to talk about ways women can communicate in the office with their boss and other co-workers..   Takeaways:    Have people tell you about their upbringing. From that you can tell someone what they need to develop in order to best compliment their behaviors.  Nice girls are women who act according to how they were raised from their childhood.  Being nice is necessary for success, but it's not the only thing that can bring you success. Hard work comes with that as well. There are different rules for how different are supposed to communicate and those rules keep women from speaking up, which is unfair and unjust.  You can't tell women not to get emotional. Before you get emotional or find yourself in tears, you need to deliver a message. It's been socially acceptable to be teary but not to be angry. Chance favors the prepared mind. You want to make sure that you are ready for whatever meeting you are going into and odds are that the meeting will go well.  If no one is responding to you, don't keep talking as people tend to tune out. Instead, use a tagline like “did I answer your question?” Quote of the Show:   7:35 “Nice is necessary for success, it's simply not sufficient.” Links:   Twitter: https://twitter.com/drloisfrankel?lang=en LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/drloisfrankel/ Website: https://www.drloisfrankel.com/ Book Link: https://www.amazon.com/Nice-Girls-Dont-Speak-Stand/dp/1549103369 Ways to Tune In:   Amazon Music - https://www.amazon.com/Hiring-and-Empowering-Solutions/dp/B08JJSLJ7N Apple Podcast - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/hiring-and-empowering-solutions/id1460184599 Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/3oIfsDDnEDDkcumTCygHDH Google Podcast - https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cDovL2ZlZWRzLmxpYnN5bi5jb20vMTc4MTM2L3Jzcw Stitcher - https://www.stitcher.com/show/hiring-and-empowering-solutions

Explain Anything to Anyone (0:00:00)I love telling people about things I'm passionate about... like theater and books and parenting, because I want people to love these things as much as I do. But sometimes, people just don't care, because they can't relate. They don't understand how hard it is to memorize lines, they haven't read the same books, or they're not a parent. But the way we explain our favorite topics could help others not only grasp them but also recognize how cool they are. Our next guest has had to explain concepts much more complicated than books. Former physicist Dr. Dominic Walliman joins us today to discuss how to explain anything to anyone.  Worst Tech of the Decade (0:17:01)In the last ten years, technology has changed a bunch. Can you believe that in 2010 we still used cell phones with those sliding keyboards, and the latest iPhone was only the iPhone 4? Crazy. In the last several years we've seen the advent of self-driving cars, drones, and wireless headphones. While cool new tech seems to be coming out all the time, there's also been plenty of tech flops. Today we thought we'd take a trip down memory lane and reminisce on some of the worst tech from the last decade. Joining us is Rod Gustafson, a tech expert, former producer, and friend of the show.  Nice Girls Don't (0:35:13)Despite the progress we've made over the years, women's careers still tend to be complicated. Why is this? And how can we, as a whole, move towards equality in all aspects? Today we have Dr. Lois Frankel, author of the New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestselling “Nice Girls Don't” business books, renowned career coach and women's advocate, to share tools women can use to feel valued, as well as what we can all do to teach our daughters to be heard.   Memories (0:50:38)Sam Payne, master storyteller and host of BYU Radio's The Apple Seed, talks with Lisa and Richie about the value of memories and what we can do to cherish the ones that mean the most to us.  Mini Book Club: Feel Good Books (1:04:03)Rachel Wadham, of BYU Radio's Worlds Awaiting, chats with Lisa and Richie about the best books to read when you're looking to be uplifted.  Be Different (1:25:40)Most businesses are the same. The typical full-time employee spends 45 hours on the clock each week. A lack of trust among peers is all too common today. And too often businesses are focused on how they can improve the organization rather than the individuals who work for them. But the truth is, if you want to succeed, whether in business or your career or life, being different makes all the difference. But what exactly needs to change for us to succeed? Here to tell us what we can do to succeed in our jobs, careers, and the workplace, is Stan Silverman. Stan Silverman is the former president and chief executive officer of PQ Corporation and the author of the book "BE DIFFERENT! The Key To Business And Career Success."
