I'm your host Chanelle Neilson. Let's make mom life simple.  Hey, you guys welcome to the mom's life made simple podcast. I'm so glad you're here. And I am here today with Stacy Julian, Stacy. Thanks for being with us.  Oh, my goodness. Thanks for asking me so  Yes, I am so excited to spend time with you and to chat you guys, Stacy is so much fun. We have podcasted together on her podcast. Be exactly enough time podcasts. And Stacy is just someone who I admire, who puts so much good stuff out into the world. Stacy is a mom of five kids and just like me, she has four boys and one girl.  Mm.  And Stacy, tell us just a little bit more about yourself. Well, thank you. First of all. So I I'm a grandma, so let's add one beautiful granddaughter to that list of four boys and a girl. So I've been, I've worked in the memory, keeping space Chanel and listeners for many, many, many years. And so my passions lie. With photos and stories and family history. I love how those things come together. And I think for me, they have always sort of, sort of that focus and, and the opportunity I've had to teach that to others has really helped me stay present in my life. And so Yeah. so I love pictures and stories, and especially now as I get older, I love pictures and stories of ancestors. So.  Yeah. Okay. That's so cool. And I love that you have done that and worked in that space and helped and taught others how to do those things. I know that's been part of the focus of your work. Okay, so good. And how old is your granddaughter? Okay. So my granddaughter? is Okay. And we going to have to like figure it out in my brain. She's 18 months. She's probably more like 20 months. All of a  Oh, that's so fun. Okay. Very  so awesome.  Yeah. That's fun. I look forward to that stage of life. That's exciting. So, all right. Well, we are going to dive in and ask the question that I'm asking. All of these amazing moms that I'm bringing on here is how do you make mom lifestyle? I will tell you how I try to make mom life simple. And I will say that I am an amazing mom about half the time, and then the other half of the time, I'm probably a hot mess, but, but one of the things that has helped me be an amazing mom, and this is going to just sound totally goofy, but little mini clipboards. Okay. And I, and I even have some to show. To show if you happen to be watching this on YouTube, but if you're just listening, you guys, this is a little six by nine, like from staples, nothing special clipboard. And then of course, because I'm a little crafty, I like make it cute on the back and I spray paint the friends. And then I just create on my computer a list that is pretty specific to what I need. To simplify. Okay. So backup lots of years when I had those four boys in different schools going different directions, and I created a morning clipboard. I'm a big morning person than you. And I talked about that Chanel. And what I don't like to do in the morning is say, Did you pack your lunch? Did you make your bed? Did you put this away? Did you get, you know, your permission slip, all of this stuff. And so I created a morning clipboard for each of my children, and there were some standard things on there. Like I expect you to make her bed and I expect you to brush your teeth and eat breakfast and pack your lunch. And then if there were specific things based on the sport they were playing or piano lessons after school or whatever it was, I would add it. So in my home for many years, you didn't get an allowance, but I paid you a dollar a day for a completed clipboard. And what I like about that is then in the morning, I was saying, did you do your. 'cause then that covers all of it, all the things that were on the clipboard. And I never made it a huge deal if they didn't, because honestly, they're the ones that dealt with the consequences. You know what I mean? Like it wasn't like, oh my gosh, she didn't drink a part. It was just like, oh, that's a bummer because had you done your clipboard? You know, you'd be prepared, you know? So if they forgot their lunch, I'm like, yeah. that's a bummer. I wish I could bring it to you. It's on your clipboard. So maybe tomorrow you'll remember. But, I mean, I just, it was a really great way for me to pass the accountability on to them and in it, you know, and there's some kids that never took to it all the way. And then there were some kids who were like, you know, every Friday you want me to fight, you know, perfect clipboard week. So so it was just a tool and then I could adjust it, you know, I would print 10 at a time and then if we needed to adjust things, I would, and there were so cute. Sometimes it comes down to my mind. I don't want that first. I want you to put, you know, eat breakfast first and then make your bed. And so they would, they would say, I want this in a certain order, but that was them taking ownership in, you know, how they needed their morning to go. So That's one example. For years, I had a nanny that worked for me because I worked full-time at a magazine. And there was a nanny clipboard. And that way I could, you know, add to the standard things. I need you to go to the store and I need you to get me this, this and this. And I need you to make this for dinner or whatever it was. So I've used them in so many different ways. And right now, currently with my daughter, I homeschool her and we literally have five homeschool clipboards. Okay. So I just had her go up and bring. Three of them down. So each day of the week, there's a clipboard. so I know exactly what's going to happen every Wednesday. When we go up to the homeschool room, like we're going to do teaching textbooks, we're going to have a little devotional. We're going to do language arts. We're going to do history. So I know that are short days and long days, but I don't have to, I don't have to think, you know, what are the subjects? What are the things that we do today? We just grab the clipboard and we mark it off as we go. So that's the general idea and I've just used it. In so many different ways. And I, and I love them. I love That's so fun. Okay. That's so cute. And I love that idea and it's not something that I've really heard a lot to be honest. It's not something you hear people talking about, so this is really fun.  Well, it's kind of low tech. I mean, it's kind of low tech, you know what I mean? Like it's not your phone. Cause there's so many people, I think that do an amazing job of managing their life and their time. But, but for me, low tech worked again because. This is when my kids were little and there was actually less tech back then. But but I really just like, it was born out of necessity, you know what I mean? And I just really, the best thing about all out is just really, without sitting my kids down and telling them, Okay. you've got to be the kind of person that makes lists and knows what you, you know, it just, it was a way to sort of help them make that happen without it just happened. Naturally. Does that make  Yeah, definitely. And I  I cut you off. You were going to say something.  I think you actually bring up a really good point about the tech, because I think a lot of people would think, okay, well, can't, I just do this on my phone, but there are a lot of dangers, if you, if either your kid is holding a phone or you're holding a phone, we know our phones hijack our brain all the time. And you know, in my kids' schools, they use Chromebooks for everything, for all their schoolwork. And I'll go and I'll see them with their Chromebook and think they're doing schoolwork, but sometimes they're totally sidetracked and doing something else. And I think the clipboard is only the clipboard. You can't accidentally go and play a game, you know, when you're supposed to be eating breakfast. So I like this a lot. I have one logistic. I have a few different questions, but first, like just on a really I don't know what you call it, but you do, you have to cut the paper in half. How do you, yes, that's it? No, that's a good question, actually. So it's, it's just a standard, you open up a word document and It's you put your page landscape, and then I just said to color. And then I create one list with little bubbles, you know, and then I basically just copy and paste it to. the, to the other side. So then when I print one piece of paper, it's printing two checklists. So, so then, so I have a folder on my computer and this is back in the day. So there would be literally the folder that was chases clipboards, clerks, clipboards, you know what I mean? Like, so each kid had their folder and then. Sort of the, sort of the iterations or the variations of, of the actual checklist. And that's what I have now. I have a folder that is homeschool and in there you'll find the clipboards, you know, the checklist for each day of the week.  Yeah. Okay. I like that. I tried something. It wasn't super cutesy, but for our kids chores that they do on Saturday, they have a zone, they have a section of the house and I tried writing out like, okay, so for the bathroom, you've got to take out the trash. You've got to wipe down the toilet, but all the steps to cleaning the bathroom and my kids really rolled their eyes and thought it was. And so you mentioned some of your kids took to this more than others. I'm really curious to know. Is it like a personality thing, do you think, or is it the way it's presented? What did you find in getting the kids on board? Like what worked? Yeah. And that's so funny, you mentioned the zone cleaning cause girls who had clipboards in her zones, like he  I am not surprised.  So it's about them during there's the bathroom checklist. And when you're done, you bring me the checklist? Yes. So, I mean, I have one beautiful son. The ADHD. And he was honestly the one it's hard. It's hard to stay focused and to stay on task. So he would get discouraged that he very rarely had a quote unquote perfect clipboard day. So I would get to the point where I would put funny things on his, like stop in. I don't know, like I can't even remember what he would get distracted with, you know what I mean? But I would throw a, watch a cartoon on. Or, you know, just things that I knew he liked to do to try and make it a little more appealing to him. Stop and have a snack, you know, so, and, and there were, and it's kinda, this is kind of confusing because it wasn't just morning stuff. So there was morning stuff they did and, and it kind of depended cause we morphed it over time, but there was kind of a morning section and then there was an afternoon session. And the thing that motivated this particular son is at the bottom of the checklist, it just says. Like if, once you mark those things off, what I mean, then you are free now. You don't owe anything to mom. And I really tried to stick to it. So I couldn't say to them, oh, Hey, will you do X, Y, and Z? Because if they have already done their clipboard, then that's, that's it. You know what I mean? And obviously you're a team and there's times when you're like, okay, you know, we all got to do something really quick to help your mom out, but I think that w why it worked for. The other ones particularly is because then they knew mom will be done asking me. And I think as moms is really easy to just one more thing and this and that, and it created for them this sense that they did have ownership in their day. If they did the things first that were required to them, then they could make decisions, choices about how to spend the rest of their time.  Yeah. We had some clipboards, so it would have certain things that they had to do before 1:00 PM. And if they did those by 1:00 PM, then they could have two hours of TV or computer time. So anyway, that, you know, that was, I just tried to sort of tailor each clipboard to each kid.  Yeah, I like this so much because you've mentioned a couple things, a couple of words that stand out one is accountability. This idea that, you know, this is their job. And then also, I don't think you said the word, but the other thing that's standing out to me is boundaries. It's like, you know, so easy. As moms, you know, who do I, I ask the kid, who's the most willing to help at the moment, you know, I need help bringing in groceries or I need this, or I need that. And yet they feel like, oh, because I'm willing to help. I'm doing it all. And then they feel kind of put upon because there's lots of other kids to help. And so I really liked this idea that, okay, well, these are the things that you're responsible for. And then they have that. Ownership. And like you said, then mom's not going to just keep saying, okay. More, one more thing, one more thing, you know, it's a good, it's a good system. I like that. How have you used this? You mentioned you used it with the nanny and you mentioned for homeschool. Do you use this system with your own to-do list? So I, I definitely have over the years, and right now I'm just using more of a planner just because I feel like it does a better, I'm able to journal and do other things that I wouldn't do on a clipboard. But I do because when we talked about memory keeping, but I actually created. Like, I actually sell these in my little shop. You know what I mean? I had someone make me a little mini clipboards, but so each month with my photos, I essentially have a mini clipboard and that tracks my workflow so that I know, you know what I mean? I've gone through my pictures. I've deleted them. I get to mark off the little trash can, when they're deleted, I've gone through, I favorited the ones that I want to see again or print, you know what I mean? So it's kind of crazy, but it's still that same concept that I, again, I just applied to one area of my life. And. Again, it's the tech thing. I like that I can pick it up and I can go with my laptop and I can do it over here, or I can do it over there. And I'm not on my phone because just like my kids, I get super distracted.  Yes. So it, and then I can pick it up and just be like, oh Yeah. that's where I left off. And kind of go back to it. I don't know if that answers your question, but I just love many clipboards.  Yeah, well, this is so fun. I love it. And I love how you showed us so many different applications and different uses of it, both with our kids, with people we're delegating to, and then with ourselves that there are lots of different ways. And I can really see. The way that this simplifies I'd like to just end with, I'm just tying that all in. Like what, why do you think just of all the things we've talked about or any new thoughts that you've had, why do you think that this system keeps it simple? Because for my brain, it just lets me do a brain dump. Like I like I do it and then I'm free to. Think about something else to listen to something else in the morning. Like I can listen to a talk that I want to listen to or a podcast, and I don't have to be on top of every kid micromanaging, you know, that was back in the day again. But for me, it's just, it's freeing up brain space because I like to think about ideas and not keep regurgitating. Did I do this? Did I do this? Like, it's like, it's down, it's down. And when I get to it, I'll mark it off. And. You know, like there was, I even did an exercise clipboard for a while because during the course of a week I wanted to walk twice. I wanted to do weights twice. I wanted to go to yoga. You know what I mean? So like, that sounds so goofy. I mean, I'm not that, you know, but anyway, that way. Mark it off and it ha it's this it's a, it's a shot of what do we call it? Dopamine, I guess. Right. Isn't it. I mean, you're the life coach, you know, what does it do to your  when you check it off.  what do you check it off? So It frees up space and then it allows me to feel accomplished because so much of what moms do, we have to be our own source of recognition, I believe. And so it's this chance to recognize all the things I do. Do you know what I mean? And I don't put all the things on the clipboard, but you know, when you check certain things off, then I just think it's a really great feeling.  Yeah,  I don't know if that helps or  totally. I think it's so good. And I think, you know, a thing that I talk about a lot is this idea of getting things. So they're not swirling around in your brain, right? That's when we feel overwhelmed when there's just so much going on in our mind. And so this is just another way to get it out of your mind and on paper and on this cute little clipboard and then both for other people to go and execute or for you to go and execute. It just definitely simplifies because when we feel that complexity, we want to shut down when things in our mind. Overload. We're like, ah, I can't do anything. And then you have this clipboard and it's like, no, here's what you need to do. Go lift weights. Okay, great. I know what I need to do. Yeah.  Yes. You said it like a life coach. That's awesome. That's exactly right.  I love it. Well, this has been so good. I think you've taught us just a great tip and a great way to make mom life simple. Where can people find you and get more? I'm your host Chanelle Neilson. Let's make mom life simple.  Hey, you guys welcome to the podcast. I'm excited to be here today with Darla trendler Darla. Thanks so much for being here. Oh, thanks Chanel. I am so happy to be here.  Darla and I go way back to back when I had. My previous podcast, we did a mastermind together and Darla has been going strong with her podcast. For many years. I'm thinking it must be close to five years now. How long have you  Actually it'll be four years. It's almost four years.  okay about. it's been about four since I started working on things, but yeah, not quite there, but close.  Okay, four years. And she is the host of the spiritually minded women podcast, which is a fantastic podcast. She's a mom of four kids and she's just, you will learn so much from her today. She's someone that I have learned a lot from and really admire. So Darla to start off, I'd love for you just to give a brief intro and tell us a little bit more about yourself. Okay, well, I am an Arizona and I was born here. I moved away when I was a kid and begged my husband to come back and we've lived here for 22 years in the valley and I love it here. I love I'm looking out my window right now and see my orange tree and it's 81 degrees in December. So I love living in Arizona. I'm kind of a desert person and I have four kids. Two of them are out of the house. They're are 22 and 19. Well, 20, his birthday is like this week. So 22 and 20. And then I have two teenagers at home that are both in high school. They are 14 and 17. So I'm kind of like on that phase of motherhood where I'm learning how to navigate with a young adult children and teenagers. And, you know, looking ahead that in a few years, there's not going to be any kids living in our home anymore. And I don't think motherhood ever ends. And so. We're kind of looking forward to a new phase of being parents. I'm married to my husband, Tim. We've been married for 24 years. We own a car dealership and I podcast at spirituality women. I love it. I just love connecting with other women and talking about important things in deep things and sharing other women's stories. So that's what I do.  Oh, I love it so much. I think that's so fun. And Arizona is a good place. It's a little hot, but but it's fantastic in the  Well, we endure those summers because then we have eight months of beautiful weather. So.  Yes. Yes, it is nice in the winter, for sure. So, okay. Well, I'm excited today to learn from some of your wisdom, and I think it's awesome that you are getting to this next phase of motherhood, right? Where your kids are a little bit older. So I think there's a lot that you can teach us having gone through the, the young phase of motherhood and now entering this phase. So what we're going to talk about today is just one simple thing, which is how do you make mom life since. Okay. I had to really think about this question and think, you know, what, what is something that I really do to make it simple because it's not always simple. It's, you know, I was talking to my husband this morning about, you know, how hard it is to like, Let your kids do things and teach them how to be independent and teach them things that when it's so much easier to do it yourself, that doesn't really simplify your life. But the thing that I kind of landed on that has been a practice of mine for several years is when I start to feel that overwhelm. And like I have a million things to do and a million places to be, and all these demands on my time. Is to just take a step back and think what's essential right now. And I got this from, if you've ever read the book, essential ism by Greg McKeown. I have read that book like four times. I love it. So many of the principles in that book, but this is probably the one that I, that really I took away the most and have implemented the most in my life. And so. When I start feeling those feelings of like, I'm so overwhelmed and I, you know, I don't even know what to do next. And I've got all these things swirling in my brain because I've always got a lot of things going on. That's just my personality and how I kind of operate. But operating in overwhelm, isn't very fun and it's stressful. So. When I start to feel that way, I've, I've kind of trained myself to just take a step back and take a few deep breaths and kind of recenter myself and just ask the question what's essential right now. Like what has to be done right now? And just one thing, I'm not multitasking. I'm not going to do, try to do everything at once, but what is the next thing that needs to happen the next step? And it's really interesting. You know, and I, I like to sometimes bring God into it and I'll pray and ask him what he thinks I should do. And it's really interesting that it's not always these big, huge things. Like sometimes it's, well, you need to go eat something because you didn't eat lunch today and that's going to help you. So that's your next step? Go and eat lunch, or, you know, it might be go prep. Or you know, you need to take some time to go talk to this child in their room. And, and then I do that and then I think, okay, what's the next thing I need to do? And I, you know, just try to prioritize and think, not think too far ahead or too, you don't get overwhelmed by the million things on my to-do list and just. What is the simple thing that I can do right now that, you know, I can just focus, give it my full attention and focus and doing that has really, it really has simplified my life. It really has made things a lot easier. I'm not perfect at it. There's still lots of times when I. Get sucked into that overwhelm. But when I do do it, I just, I noticed that it brings a peace into my life. It makes everything easier to tackle. And it makes me a happier mom and a lot easier to live with when I'm not so overwhelmed.  Oh, I love that so much. I've read essential ism several times myself, but I haven't really implemented that technique. And I think it's so good because it's just something. You can do in the moment of overwhelm. Right. And I think a lot of times we feel that overwhelmed because we're like 20 things going on, you know, all the, all these things that I have to do right now. And so to really just break it down to, you know, that simple question what's essential right now, I think is so good. So I want to get rid of. Specific here. You mentioned you pray and you ask, and I think that's really cool to ask for God's help in this. What do you do? So you're praying. What do you do when you feel like you don't get an answer or do you always get an answer to this question? How do you know if you're like, okay, but 20 things what's essential right now. I don't know. I don't know. What's essential right now. What comes next? Yeah, that's a really good question because it's not to say like, okay, I hear a voice in my head and it tells me this is what you should do. It's not like that. I kind of just go off of, okay. This feels right. And I start taking a step forward. Okay. That's kind of how that's, how I know that I'm on the right track is I it's always involved action. If I'm just sitting there fretting and thinking, I don't know what to do next. So if I just take a step, it's usually very clear. It becomes very clear, okay, this is what I should be doing right now, or this is not, and I'm going to redirect and practically, I mean, writing everything out is, is a good tool as well. Like making a list like these are all the things. In my brain. Like sometimes I do that at night. I can sometimes struggle to sleep at night because my brain doesn't shut down and I'm just thinking it's going a mile a minute. And I'm thinking about all the things. And I found that if I can just. Let's do a brain dump on it in my notebook of all the things I need to get done tomorrow. And then I'm not prioritizing them. I'm not, you know, I'm just saying, okay, I need to do this and I need to do this and I need to do this. And I just get them out of my brain. And, and so that sometimes helps me too, when I'm in that overwhelm and thinking, okay, what do I need to do next? And I don't always make a list, but when I have made a list, I go to that list and I think, okay, of all these things, like what's going to be most important right now. And so. So practically, I think, I think it's those two things. I just start taking action and then, you know, looking at that list and saying, okay, what, what feels like the next? right thing to do?  Yeah, I love that. I think that's so good. I think. One thing that I'm pulling out from that, one of the things that writing down helps us do is to really see what we have in clear, you know, action items, steps, because when we don't write it down, it's like this, it just grows in our mind. I remember once just sitting there being like, oh my gosh, I have so much to it. I have so much to do going through my mind. And then I wrote it down and I only came up with like three or four things and I'm like, oh, is that all. Once I could see it, it wasn't that many things, but that those things had a lot of weight. And so it just felt like a lot. And when I saw it listed out, it, it felt much more doable. Now you bring up another good point, which is just taking forward steps and taking action. So I think that that's another good tool there too. That you're actually. Making progress and you're moving forward. Any tips for, you know, when those action items are seeming hard and, and feeling big, how do you really, you know, move forward and take that action on those? Okay, well, I'm going to bring up Greg McKeown again because he wrote a SQL to essential ism. And now the Tuft, the name of It It's another It starts with E. I can't even remember now, but he talks about in that book, I just finished reading that one and he talks about just make it, oh, how could you make something easy? Because I mean, in my, I just said, like my mind's going a mile a minute and I make things hard in my thoughts in my brain. Like, I make things much harder than they need to be. And he's saying. Well, just, just how, how can this task be accomplished easily? Like, what's the easiest way to get this done and  That's the name of his  effortless. Okay. Thank you. Gosh, I can't, I just read it. I came up, but I read on my Kindle, so I don't sit and look at the title. And so, yeah. Anyway yeah, so like that's what he says in the book. How can we make this effortless? Like, you know what was the question you asked me?  So I was asking like, how do you, you were on the right track. How do you take this action and how do you know what action to take and how do you simplify the actual. Yeah. Okay. So that's one way to simplify it as just to say, okay, I'm going to do this in the most easy way possible. Another thing I think is to just start taking steps and I will tell you that a lot of times I know that there's something big picture that needs to happen, but I don't really know exactly how I'm going to get there, but I know that if I take a step, I'll figure out the next step. And, and then we'll figure out the next step. And that is pretty much how my life goes. I would say 90% of the time, I don't really ever have this huge vision and picture. And I know some people are like that. It's just not me. Like, I don't, that was just how I was created. And I have just, sometimes that's frustrated me, but I have learned to just embrace that. It is okay. I just have found that there's, it's powerful. It helps you feel empowered when you take a step and you accomplish something. And then once you take that step, it sort of opens up to, okay, this is the next thing that needs to happen.  Yeah. I think that most of us are really that way. Even if you have sort of an idea and a picture of how you want to end up, you often don't know. The steps. And so I think what you're saying is key is, you know, you have to just move into it, take a step forward and take the movement and take the action. And then you see the next steps. And I think nowhere is that more true than motherhood? I mean, it's true in business. It's true goals, but also in motherhood, there is definitely no manual. Yeah, right. So we don't know like, okay, if I do this with this kid, they're going to turn out like this, or this is gonna, you know, bring up this other thing and we just take forward steps and make movement. And you know, that really is what creates and really leads to getting out of that overwhelm. Because I think another thing that is coming up as you're talking is this idea that We want to see that big picture. I know for me, I would love to have it all laid out. You know, I want to do this project. Okay. Here are steps one through 10 of what you need to do. And if only it were so simple, right. But if you can only take step one, The other steps will become more apparent. And that's where that overwhelm is. The overwhelm comes from, I've got to do steps one through 10. No, you don't. And that's what I hear you saying. Just do a little, and then you'll see to know what comes up next. Any other thoughts on how this has helped you, this technique that you do on, you know, asking yourself what's essential right now? Tell us just a little bit more to finish up about what it's done for you and what you feel like it can do for other, other moms. Well, I kind of think another way to look at it is. That you're being, you're a creator. You're creating something in your life. And to me, knowing that I'm creating something, like, I think we all have this innate desire to create into, you know, to build something. And, you know, most people I think are wired that way. And I know definitely that I am. And so taking action and, you know, just being focused on. What's the next thing I need to do is a way of creating. And I think that's what propels you forward as you create. Something in your life. And then that creation opens up the next step. And so I think that's just another way to look at taking action is just that you want to be a creator and that it gives you momentum. It gives you, makes you feel powerful and like, okay, I have some control here when you've actually. Taking the time to go and create something. And I'm not talking about sometimes it's a physical creation of something like maybe dinner. I, I hardly ever cook dinner. And when I do, it's like, yay. I did it. You know, I felt really good about that. When I make, when I've done that, made that effort because it is something that's important to me, but it's just been crazy and gone kind of gotten pushed aside. But does that make sense? Like, I just feel like there. You'll you'll feel so good about what you're accomplishing when you are creating and. You know, the other thing is when I talked about making that list, like I loved what you said about like sometimes in your brain, it's much bigger than when you, where you put it on paper. It's not as big and I've experienced that, but I've also experienced times where I have put all this stuff on the paper and the things just keep coming and coming and coming, like there's more and more to write and obviously more than I could ever accomplish in a day. But I found that when I have just taken those steps and done the next thing and then done the next thing and, you know, looked at that list and kept going. Even if I don't accomplish everything in the timeframe that I think I should accomplish it, I still feel good. And I still feel momentum because I did something right. I created, I took a step. I ha I have action in my life.  Yeah. Oh, I think that is such a cool. I think creation is a spiritual principle. It's, you know, we are creating. here to create really. And we're here to God has shown us, you know, how he creates and then we are to be like him and create. And so I think that that's a such a cool thing to tie that in with this, because it's so much bigger. And when we can see that, that, again, it goes back to that big picture, right. When we see, oh, this isn't just. Making dinner, getting dinner on the table. This is taking these materials, you know, and making them into something that's sustains and feeds my family. This is creating a memory. This is creating time together, and it just ties us into this big picture vision. And it makes these little things. I feel so purposeful is what it does. And so that's a great way to make mom life simple. It's taking the things that see. Mundane and bringing purpose and meaning to them. So thank you for tying that in. I think that that is an excellent mindset thing that we can also focus on. You've had so many awesome things to share today. I know people will want to follow you and learn more. I'm your host Chanelle Neilson. Let's make mom life simple.  Hello and welcome to mom's life made simple I'm Chanel Neilson, and today is just a short introductory episode to let you know who I am and what to expect from the podcast. So, like I said, my name's Chanel. I live in Southern California with my husband. We've been married since the year 2000. And we have five kids. Our oldest just started her first year at college, and our youngest just started transitional kindergarten, which is a grade, an extra grade here for kids that whose birthdays are between September and December and didn't make the cutoff and they get to go to school an extra year before kindergarten. And our three middle children are all boys. So we have only boys here at home and we have a lot of fun with them. I love yoga. I love being outside, going for walks in the sunshine. I love the warm weather and I love dark chocolate. A lot of it. So I'm glad that it's good for you. And I also really love learning. I love teaching and I love helping and connecting with moms. And I really see a lot of moms feeling that motherhood is hard feeling that. Feeling of being overwhelmed or struggling or wanting to do things for themselves and feeling like that's not even an option whether that's self care or working on. Big goals, like creating a business or writing a book or running a marathon or those kinds of things feel that they can't do all that they want to, and can't live up to their potential because of their motherhood. And I love to help moms to find that balance between being the best moms that they can, because I believe motherhood is so important and doing those things that fill and uploading. But you as a person. And I think that that's what I, where I shine is helping moms simplify things and make their lives just a little bit more simple so that they can do both really. So the way that I do this and what this podcast will focus on is the mom's method, which is making life simple through M O M S. And that stands for manifestation organization, mobilization and simplification. So manifestation is really. I like to think of it as spiritual creation or co-creation with God. And what this means to me is living with intention. It means really understanding what it is you want in your life, what you are hoping to accomplish and achieve and believing that you can get there. It's listening to those desires that I believe were placed in you by God. And. Working with him to get where you want to go. So that manifestation also takes space. That you will be able to accomplish what you want to accomplish, and that belief is going to sustain you in the things that you do next is organization. So when I'm talking about organization, we're talking about organizing your thoughts, organizing your day, your schedule organizing. The space, your environment. And when we're really organized, what happens is we're able to prioritize. We're able to start doing the things that are important instead of the things that are urgent as moms, there are so many things that demand our attention right now, and those urgent. Feel, and sometimes are important. However, what's really important to you to that big picture vision that you have for your life to that big picture vision that God has for your life. What are those important things? Are they even making it into your schedule? Are they making it into your day? Proper organization of your day is what's going to allow you to make progress on those. The next M is mobilization mobilization means taking action. One of the best ways that we can take action is through tiny, daily repeated, consistent actions. So what that means, habits, habits, and routines. When we take little actions, Every day, we're going to see consistent and steady progress. And as moms who have a lot of demands on our time, this is really the best way to see forward momentum and to see progress often we can't just block out, you know, a few weeks to work on a project because there's life, there's a family meeting us and we need to. Take care of their needs. And yet when we have daily actions that allow us to make progress on the things that matter to us, we'll still be able to see things happening toward our personal goals. So our habits and routines. Serve us. And they help us create both the present and the future that we're looking to build. Finally, the S is for simplification. So simplification means clearing out any of the things that are holding you back. So you want to simplify your stuff, simplify your physical space. When we have too many things, It weighs on us and those things demand space in our home space, in our energy, and they kind of can weigh us. We also want to simplify our minds, mental simplification, what is weighing us down mentally that doesn't need to be there, that we can clear out when we simplify and we get rid of the things that aren't serving us, we're able to really make progress. We're able to be more joyful and to create the kind of life that we're looking to have. So this podcast will focus on. Manifestation organization, mobilization and simplification. So each week I will bring you brand new episodes that will help uplift, inspire you and help you to make your mom life more simple. I would love it. Whether we know it or not, we all have a morning routine. Maybe it's hitting the snooze button 5 times or grabbing your phone first thing and scrolling social media. When we are intentional about our morning routine, it can set the tone for our day and give us more patience as parents. We interviewed Chanelle Neilson who is a life coach and morning routine guru that has great ideas and tips for parents at any stage of life - including parents with babies that wake up at night. Hint, she doesn't say wake up before your baby - that's just crazy! We took Chanelle's tips to the test and each created our own morning routine that we love and it really helps shape our day. Chanelle Neilson believes most of her growth on the covenant path has not come from huge trials but from choosing daily to follow Jesus and live in her purpose. In this episode, Chanelle shares the practical things she does to increase her faith every day and how she has learned to use personal revelation for both spiritual and temporal aspects of her life. Chanelle expresses how acting on promptings has helped her to trust God and know that He wants more for her than she wants for herself.    Journal Questions The Helen Keller quote Chanelle shared was this, “I long to accomplish a great and noble task, but it is my duty to accomplish small tasks as if they were great and noble.”  What small task in your life could you view as great and noble? Write your thoughts on how doing this task daily will increase your faith in Jesus.   Chanelle expressed her belief that God already sees her business as “done” even though she is in the beginning stage. What are you feeling called to do in your life? Is it a business, something with your family or church calling or something else? How can you increase your faith to see this thing as already “done” in the Lord's eyes. Here's some ideas to embrace how God sees your calling as done. Ask in prayer for him to bless you with this gift. Visualize or meditate on what you are feeling called to do as “done.” Journal as if you have already accomplished what God has asked you to do.   In Chanelle's journey, she has learned to live in personal revelation every day. But she wasn't born fluent in the language of the Spirit. Chanelle has developed this ability over time by choosing daily to follow Christ and live in her purpose. Ponder how you have seen your spiritual fluency grow throughout your life. For many years, Chanelle had a terrible relationship with her body which included disordered eating and extreme negative views on her body. That all changed one day with a message not even intended for her. That one sentence was just the beginning of Chanelle changing the way she felt about her body, from negative, to neutral and then to love. One big part of that was gratitude. She share so many insights. One of my favorite being this: “Your body is worth loving, worth being grateful for, right now today. You don’t have to lose weight to deserve to love your body. You can be grateful for you body right now and that’s something you choose into every day, every moment you get to choose that.” Right now! I have found a common theme when discussing an effective culture: meetings and councils. Every time I read a book about communication, or problem-solving, or talk with a guest about creating a family culture, it often involves some kind of meeting, or sitting down to discuss plans, goals, values, or conflict resolution. Chanelle and I had a great conversation about how to hold effective family councils. She told me about great ways to diffuse hard feelings, or teenage eye-rolling when somebody in your family calls for a family meeting. make it fun don't only call a meeting to discuss serious things put personal devices aside and focus on the meeting allow for open discussion Holding councils allows for a family culture to feel open and welcoming. The family should be a safe place to discuss difficult topics. Regularly holding a family council, even to discuss fun things like planning the summer or creating a new tradition, will allow space for our families to open up about more serious matters. Chanelle shared an experience about when her son wanted to discuss politics during the latest Presidential election. Chanelle is the mother of 5 kids and is married to her best friend.  "When we take care of ourselves we can take BETTER care of everyone else." - Chanelle Neilson A major part of being able to care for ourselves is connected to our ability to let go of our responsibilities ... at least temporarily. This is nearly impossible for some moms!  Why? Part of this is caused by mom guilt...an affliction known to many. Part is a control issue.  We, as moms, want things to go a certain way.  If we're not there, doing things our way (the right way), we worry about it getting done wrong...if at all.  We have to be willing to let go of the control over those things to properly take care of ourselves. 5 Areas of Self-Care Physical Mental Nourishing your body Relaxation Social Chanelle explored each of these areas, why they are so important, and how moms can easily implement them.  PHYSICAL:   Exercise is definitely one aspect of physical self care that is important. We should listen to our bodies.  The needs of our body change from day to day, but those needs MUST be met.  Perhaps one day you need a good, hard run, but on another your body may need rest, or a really good yoga stretch.   Sometimes a physical need may not have to do with our bodies at all.  Perhaps we desperately need order and loveliness in our home or garden.  It could be the need to help our house or garden look better. How can we be aware of our physical needs? It takes time to learn to slow down and listen to what our body is saying about its needs.  It becomes easier with practice. In the chaos that is motherhood, we need to be able to FEEL and THINK. MENTAL A huge part of mental self care has to do with incorporating things into our life that stimulate us, such as podcasts (shameless plug!), books, puzzles, etc. Sometimes mental self care can mean taking a mental break.  We live in a world where we are constantly needing to  process information.  Sometimes the goal needs to be finding peace. We may need to turn off the TV or music in the background in order to create and hear the peace. "Turn it all off once in a while and have silence and see what comes up in your mind.  Mental self care might mean putting more in and it might mean letting more out and giving yourself space." NOURISHING YOUR BODY Feeding our bodies needs to be done with care and consideration. Chanelle talks about the benefits of an 80%/20% rule when it comes to food and indulgence.  Essentially that means that 80% of the time we should choose healthy choices.  That gives us the freedom to indulge 20% of the time without guilt.  This rule lends itself to a huge mental shift where food is concerned so that we can nourish our body AND our souls. RELAX This area is more commonly thought of as PAMPERING. If moms have the time and money to have manicures, pedicures, and massages, then that certainly is one way to pamper ourselves.  If not, here are some ideas on how moms can pamper for little or no money: Hot bath with epsom salts or essential oils. Foot bath with marbles at the bottom so you can move your feet around on them and accomplish a foot bath along with a massage. Ask friends over for a night of pampering and do any above along with facial masks, eye cucumber treatments, soothing music, etc. SOCIAL The most important part of social self care is to be with people that FILL you!  Notice how your friends make you feel.  If you feel worse about YOU after being with them, that's a good indication that being with them is not good social self care. Stay at home moms can be very lonely which strains not only themselves, but their relationships with their children and their husbands.   Here are some ideas for social self care: Call friends---old and new---and connect. Make play dates for your kids and spend the time connecting with their moms.   How can busy moms fit self care into their lives? It's all about making tasks a habit! Morning routines Night routines Daily effort works better than weekly to truly nourish moms and make them better able to nourish others. Nicole Atwood is a core and pelvic floor specialist who helps moms to strengthen their bodies (and stop peeing their pants). Show Notes Chanelle: Hello and welcome to the Moms Who Know Podcast. I’m your host Chanelle Neilson, and I’m joined today by Nicole Atwood.   Nicole: I’m so excited to be on your podcast!   Chanelle: This is going to be a good one. This is a topic I’ve been wanting to talk about on the show for a while: core and pelvic floor health. I’m excited to learn from her today. Nicole says healing is possible no matter how long ago you’ve had your babies. What got you interested in this line of work?   Nicole: my starting point was a life trial. I had always been fit and enjoyed exercising. I got pregnant, had an active pregnancy. It never occurred to me that I would have problems after I had my baby. I had my little girl and it was a big reality check. I had a lot of trauma to my pelvic floor muscles, from the birth. The doctor gave me the all clear at 6 weeks. I started working at a high plyo program. I feel like that created a blind spot to the symptoms I was experiencing. After 12 weeks, I had toned up and lost weight, but I had this really round belly. I started thinking back to all the symptoms I had been ignoring: I was peeing my pants. I didn’t realize that that was an issue, that was a red flag…urinary incontinence is a red flag, I was also experiencing intense low back pain, and I had the “jelly belly” I was feeling no muscle activation or recruitment, even while doing sit ups… I started researching, but there wasn’t very much information out there, and I was trying to find what was wrong with me and I found out about diastasis recti. I did a self test and I realized that something was not right with my body. I asked my doctor about it, and he was no help. I cried in the car when I left his office. I went to a physical therapist, and she gave me a little bit of help and information. She likened my body to a rubber band and she said it’s been stretched during pregnancy, and it’s not going to go back to where it was. I left her office thinking I am going to prove her wrong. I couldn’t accept that. I decided I am going to help myself. I found a UK based program, called MuTu System, I’m now a trained pro for that system. It opened my eyes to a new way to heal, and now I want to be that advocate for women.   C: I always love those stories when people have hard times and turn that into helping other people. Explain to people what diastasis recti is   N: It’s abdominal separation. The core is wrapped in different muscle layers. The rectus muscles are the superficial layer (6 pack muscles). They are in two halves. They are connected by connective tissue. When you have diastasis recti, there is a separation of those two muscles. Those two halves start to pull apart and unnaturally separate from each other.   C: it’s almost more clear in women who are petite. If you’re already carrying extra weight, it’s easy to blame it on weight and not even think there might be an underlying issue   N: that’s why it’s important to tune into other symptoms that might lead to this underlying issue.   C: I hear urinary incontinence, and I think, that it’s more serious. The sneezing thing is pretty common. My friend would stop walking, cross her legs and sneeze.   N: you have to prepare for the sneeze. That’s stress incontinence. The pelvic floor muscles can’t handle the load. We joke about it. It’s very common. It’s something that we need to address and not accept. Why are we settling for this? We deserve better   C: we all know other women who are struggling with this. We don’t have to live with this, right?   N: it’s common but that doesn’t make it normal. It’s a red flag, something is happening in the pelvic floor that needs to be addressed.   C: what do you do when women have this problem?   N: core and pelvic floor weakness is a full body approach. The standard thing is kegels, but that’s lacking. That’s not just the answer. Our pelvic floor muscles extends from the front to our rectum. Kegels are an isolated muscle and something that happens is we’re told to do 100 kegels a day and what tends to happen is that we create a tight (hypertonic) pelvic floor. It has a lot of the same symptoms as a weak pelvic floor. We need a full body approach, with restorative and rehabilitative exercise. Core and pelvic floor work together and when we train together, that’s when they become functional. If you’re having urinary incontinence it could be a lot of different things. I always encourage women to see a pelvic physical therapist to find out what is really going on.   C: We hear kegels, kegels, kegels. Give me an example of types of exercises.   N: You see these exercises here and there. What you’re doing matters. Some exercises are going to make it better or worse, but what also matters is how you’re doing the exercise. You have to correctly activate the core and pelvic floor. Many people don’t know how to activate the transverse abdominals. But it’s more important how you’re recruiting core and pelvic floor in the movement.   C: we might not be getting to the right muscles even if we’re doing the exercises. Talk to us about why this happens, especially during pregnancy.   N: pelvic floor dysfunction is not just a womens issue. We really associate these issues with pregnancy because it’s a high load event. Our body is smart. Almost all of women in their third trimester and postpartum have some kind of diastatis. It’s when it doesen’t heal that it’s an issue. During pregnancy, two things you can do to aid the natural healing process. Not posture, posture is the way that we look. Alignment is the way our body is stacked. Pregnancy is a high pressure event. Oftentimes we over correct and that creates even more pressure. If you can maintain good alignment you can help keep that pressure system neutralized. During pregnancy, you need to avoid traditional core exercise, but still stay connected through the core and pelvic floor. Mind to muscle connection is huge. Stay connected during pregnancy, labor, delivery and postpartum. You will heal much better as well.   C: a lot of women feel like they can’t work their core during pregnancy. What can they do?   N: everyone is different. Avoid movement that causes intense pressure on the rectus muscles. Think about the load that is being placed on the pelvic floor (when running, etc.). Even if your body can handle it, is it beneficial for your body? What kind of load are you placing on your core and pelvic floor?   C: we don’t even think of that question!   N: we forget to ask is it okay for us? Is there a better solution? Is there something else I can sub in? Walking will benefit your body.   C: I love to walk, that’s my favorite. Walking and yoga! I want to talk about postpartum and beyond. You say it’s never too late, so if you’ve been walking around with this belly, it’s not too late?   N: our body is never past its capabilities of healing. Most of the clients I work with are usually in their late 40s to 60s. they see incredible healing from applying this. What you can do postpartum and beyond is those three key building blocks. Breathing is one. When we have core and pelvic floor dysfunctions, the way that we breathe matters. We can be belly breathers or do you have movement up into the rib cage. If you’re belly breathing you’re creating more pressure. Teaching a more optimal way to breathe is important. Also, that mind to muscle connection. If we’re not aware of these muscles, how can we strengthen and heal these muscles? Breathing helps aid in that.   C: you are speaking my language! We teach that in yoga. I hope you listeners put your hand on your belly to see how you were breathing. I love that we have been made aware that its common but not normal to pee your pants. Show Notes Chanelle: hello and welcome to the moms who know podcast. I’m your host Chanelle Neilson and I’m joined today by Nadalie Bardo. Thanks so much for being here. Nadalie is a blogger, coach, photographer, graphic designer. She quit her 9 to 5 to work from home and I wanted to talk to her about slaying goals and getting things done in your life. Nadalie, how were you able to quit your job?   N: a series of incidents led me to where I am now. I spent a lot of time in school and when I finally started working full time, I felt so bored. I got all this education to end up being a pleb. I left that job…it wasn’t creative enough and I wanted to do something that was more me. I went to a charity job and got fired and then I was like, I’m done. I just had that sense that the universe was like, “ok, you go do your thing.” I had no job, no money; I started to hustle, do whatever I could, and started the blog.   C: I think most people at that junction, with no job, no money, I think most people wouldn’t turn to a side hustle, they would think I have to get another job. Why did you go that route?   N: I have had side hustles forever. As a full time student, this was the thing on the side. I had it as a hope of something I would do. When I got fired, I realized this was an excuse, like I can’t do this because I can’t afford it. I’m not saying it’s not a legitimate fear. I hit the point where I realized I could continue to keep living these fears or I could do something different.   C: I think that you hit on something really important. A lot of times we use an excuse when it’s really other things. That’s something I’m personally working on, when really it’s another fear that’s holding me back. I’m trying to say, How can I afford it? Instead of immediately saying, “I can’t.” One of the reasons I wanted to have you on is because a lot of my listeners are stay at home moms and I hear a lot, ‘how can I make money at home?” and here you were able to do this working from home, and that is a dream of so many moms. I love how you laid that foundation, and worked on it for a long time ad then you cranked it up. When you’re working from home, you have to want to do it. What’s your motivation?   N: I definitely think that motivation is one of those keys to slaying your goals. I think that my motivation is knowing where I want to get and if I slack off I’m not going to get there. I want to help other people realize that they can be afraid of failure of success. If I achieve my goals I can help other people stay motivated to achieve theirs. All the time I’ve already invested in this- I need to see this through. I want this more than I’ve wanted anything. On the daily, what does that mean? My motivation comes from finding a space I can work in, shutting out what’s around me. My noise cancelling headphones give me energy and help me focus on this thing that I’m working on today.   C: I love this idea of creating an environment. I was telling Nadalie how I have to work around my one year old, but it comes down to desire, that even when you have those obstacles, you are going to keep doing it even when you have hard times. You hit on something really briefly: fear of failure and fear of success. Can you talk to me about what you see with these?   N: It’s easiest to talk about how I battle these opposing fears. Fear of failure is what stops you from starting, or putting your self out there or leaving your comfort zone. We’re almost wired to think it’s not going to work out. We have to reprogram our mind to focus on the light and the positive. Even if we fail it’s not the end. WE fail our way to success. Failure is part of the journey. Getting over that fear is key to getting to the next part. I love this quote: you only need to get it right once. That right time is that success. I think that we tell ourselves all these excuse: tired, money, time, get distracted, etc. I think because we’re kind of married to the struggle. I know for myself, I have to give myself permission to be successful, permission to make money.   C: that’s something else I’m working on. I’m trying to be okay with accepting money for providing services. It’s this internal hang-ups. We all have them- things that stop us from starting. These are us holding us back. We have to put ourselves out there and do things, and that’s when things start to happen in our lives. How has fear of success played a role?   N: I think it looks differently to different people. It comes with its own problems and its own burdens. Success is completely relative. It’s a struggle to define because I kept asking people if they felt successful. One of the reasons I quit my 9 to 5, is because one guy said, “She’s made it” but that was not success for me. You have to define what your success is to get over reaching it. Success looks different for everyone.   C: that is so important! WE have to define what success is. What if we get there, and it’s not what we wanted. I think that can happen to us and so we stay in the comfortable place because we think what if I get there and it’s not what I wanted. You have so many great things about setting goals. Talk to us about some of you best tips on how to achieve your goals.   N: So, I find that it really starts at the beginning: setting your goals. Set goals that resonate with you that you are committed to achieving, that you’ve worked out how to achieve. I think we have the big goal, and we have to narrow it down to the day to day. Success is in the day to day, what tin y task can you accomplish today? Achieingng your goals is 20% setting is and 80% slaying it. What do you need to focus, what inspires you, accountability partner. Call each other out on your fears. Realize how you work best and figure out what you need to do every day so that you take action and not keep going back and planning. You can spend time planning but have every excuse not to take that first step. How do you get yourself to move, to take an imperfect action? You almost have to set a fire in your belly so you can’t just sit there.   C: so many people really want these things in their lives, what holds people back?   N: One of the best ways to not get overwhelmed is focusing on the tiny things that we can do. Instead of saying I have a goal for the whole year, figure out what is this tiny part I can work on. When you’re focused on what you need to do now, it’s about shrinking it down and knowing what you need to do today and training your mind to not wander and focus on everything else, but to focus in the now.   C: give us an example of how you take this big goal and break it down   N: My goal last year was to create the “slay your goals planner.” My first action is to brain dump all my possible ideas: decide what pages, design, working one chapter at a time, get feedback, edits, research other planners, etc. and I would ask myself. Which one goes first? Sometimes they come together like a caterpillar- you need one to get to the next task. I ask myself certain questions: what is important and what is urgent? I like to ask myself, is anyone going to notice if I don’t do this? If the answer is no, then I don’t do it, or it’s not a priority. If it’s no, it’s priority number one.   C: I think that helps and breaks it down. I love that process of breaking it down. In “getting things done” they talk about the next action: the simplest, smallest thing. Sometimes things are dependent on each other. It kind of lays it out for you.   N: sometimes what helps is you start at the end an work yourself backwards. I want to make that planner a physical planner, so I work my way backward and take those steps. Let’s go back to getting in shape. Sometimes we have a weight goal, like 6 months, what do I need to lose every month to make that goal.   C; That’s Steven Covey- Begin with the End in Mind. It’s valuable to brainstorm. I know for me if I don’t get that down on paper, it feels overwhelming, once I can see it, it starts to come together. I’m glad you mentioned your planner. I really like how you ask important questions. Brittney Stefanic is a sleep consultant. Her hobby is sleeping, and she makes sure to get enough of it for herself and the families she works with. A good night's sleep is possible, even as a mom! Show Notes: Chanelle: Hello and welcomed to the moms who know podcast, I’m your host Chanelle Neilson and my guest today is Brittney Stefanic. This is going to be good because Brittney is a mother of one little guy, was a high school teach turned sleep consultant. I like my sleep. Having babies, that was the hardest thing- not getting enough sleep How did you do with a newborn and sleepless nights?   Brittney: It’s nothing you can prepare for. We thought we were going to cope and night after night you watch the clock and there’s not enough going on on Facebook to get you through the night. It’s a tricky thing, but the good news is it doesn’t have to be   Chanelle: If you’re sleep deprived, that’s all you want is sleep. Tell us more about you and why you became a sleep consultant   Brittney: After we had our son, I was at his checkup. Our pediatrician asked how his sleep was going. And I broke down and was lucky she didn’t push it off. She encouraged me to go home and read and learn the skills to teach him. Went home and started reading and came across the sleep sense program. T his left like a great fit for us. We implemented it and saw immediate progress and I couldn’t help telling family and friends. I quickly realized that I started talking about sleep a lot and took it as a sign that it might be more than just my favorite hobby.   Chanelle: that’s a great hobby!   Brittney: A few months later the opportunity came up for me to join the sleep sense program.   Chanelle: Tell us about the training     Brittney: I looked into the options and realized that it would be a good fit for me. I flew down to Florida and was trained by Dana Obleman, the author of the program. Spent time learning the ins and outs of pediatric sleep   Chanelle: I know of Dana Obleman because when we had our fifth baby, that’s who I turned to to help with sleep issues. Sleep almost seems so intuitive, why would we need help, but we do! There are so many questions that come up. It’s helpful to have a sleep consultant. When my daughter was a baby we didn’t know about this kind of thing. It’s cool that that’s out there now. Let’s talk about some of the problems with babies.   Brittney: Baby age range is from 3 months to 2 years old. The most common pitfall is overtiredness. They’re keeping the little one up too long, and as a result of that overtiredness, it makes the next sleep that much harder. With overtiredness, the best thing that I can recommend is watch for cues: yawing, rubbing eyes, etc. Encourage a nap before they get too tired.   Chanelle: My baby gets still and stares into space. It’s more subtle and it can be hard to catch. Overtiredness, I can see how that would be such a problem. Tell us about newborns.   Brittney: for most newborns, the biggest issue is daytime/ nighttime confusion.   Chanelle: I had one that was really bad. Our first son thought day was night and night was day and it was torture   Brittney: this confusion looks like longer stretches of sleep throughout the day, and catnaps at night. That is frustrating as a parent. Their circadian rhythm hasn’t gotten adjusted. The easiest way to fix this is to expose them to natural light. Open the blinds, etc. Do the opposite at night, so that we can help baby in learning separation of days and nights.   Chanelle: Do parents resist this idea of getting more light?   Brittney: there’s nothing wrong with staying inside and getting more light. There are ways to get exposed to light without leaving the house. Or even a drive in the car while the sun is shining can be helpful   Chanelle: for parents who are resistant, you can get used to it. I have question. I’ve heard that circadian rhythm gets off because when you’re active during the day,   Brittney: you lull the baby to sleep in the womb, and when you’re sleeping, they are more active, so it is an in utero transition.   Chanelle: talk to me about toddlers   Brittney: for any moms with toddlers at home, you know that come bedtime, they will make any excuse! Some of them are hilarious. Toddlers at bedtime come up with a lot of excuses; that’s a really common issue. Be consistent. Toddlers want to push boundaries, but they really want rules and expectations. That can make bedtime shorter and cut out some of those excuses.   Chanelle: I just want to point out something you said. Toddlers want to push boundaries but what they really want is to find out where those boundaries are. When we give them that stability , they feel more safe and they feel more secure. Even though we can feel mean, it’s important to know that its good for them.   Brittney: I couldn’t agree more.   Chanelle: let’s talk about common parent mistakes. False assumptions about sleep, etc.   Brittney: I’ll start with this one: my baby is just a bad sleeper. I try to educate families, but that kiddo just hasn’t learned the skills yet that they need. Sleep is a skill. It isn’t because they can’t, it’s because they don’t know how   Chanelle: but are there bad sleepers?   Brittney: there are very rarely things that would get in the way of sleep, for example, sleep apnea. In most cases, a skill needs to be learned and habits need to be broken.   Chanelle: that’s good because it gives us hope. That belief that my baby is just a bad sleeper makes us feel like there’s nothing we can do. When you change that it’s a lot more hopeful: there’s sleep in the future. What else do you hear from parents   Brittney: back to mindset. I hear my baby is never going to sleep through the night. I like to encourage families to say “yet.” Using that word really changes the mindset for parents. Because sleep is a skill, and believing that we can teach them that skill, means that we can help them and they will get there.   Chanelle: It gives us hope. What else do you hear from parents?   Brittney: parents will say, children will fall asleep whenever they’re tired. This is rarely try. Think about sleep as you would about nutrition. It’s rare that kids just love vegetables. We encourage it, we give them choices and support. It’s the same with sleep. It’s rare that a child would choose to sleep. They would rather stay up and be with their families. You might be a lucky parent, but more often than not, kids need that structure and support.   Chanelle: the only kids that I’ve really seen fall asleep is when they are way overtired and it’s late and they haven’t had a nap all day. That’s not a healthy pattern when your kid is so tired that they’ve been up for that long. Other than that, you’re getting cues, but they’re not actually falling asleep.   Brittney: exactly, rarely are they choosing to go to bed. They would rather stay up and have fun   Chanelle: that’s why structure is so important and helping them understand the routine. Tell us any last pieces of advice.   Brittney: one of the things that I love most is educating families about importance of sleep. It allows them to grow and develop, immune systems to fight off common illness, focus in school, energy for activities. Sleep is equally as important for parents. We need that time for our own sanity and relationships, and our own health and wellness. Sleep can and should be our reality.   Chanelle: we can all work to make sleep our hobby and reality. Leta will help you get over your negative thoughts and find your inner hotness. Show Notes Chanelle: Hello and welcome to the moms who know podcast, I’m your host Chanelle Neilson and I’m way excited about today’s guest, Leta Greene. Leta, thanks so much for being here. Leta: Of course, I’m super excited about being here. I love moms because I’m a mom! Chanelle: Yes, she is not only a mom, she is hotness personified. What you need to know about Leta is, if you look her up, you will find the world hotness associated with Leta and I love it so much. I love that you just own it, so let me tell you a little more. Leta is an International speaker and author Leta Greene inspires each of us to embrace what makes us individually hot and amazing. As an image consultant and makeup artist for almost twenty years, Leta has helped clients to not only look their best, but to feel their best in the workplace. Her message is one of honoring yourself through being authentic to who you are. It is through humor, stories, and a new way of seeing the everyday that makes Leta’s audiences of all ages want to hold on for more! Her kids and hubby bring it home for her; anytime she thinks she is too cool, it’s time to cook dinner. They help her keep it real – but she’s still hot! I love it because it’s so true, anytime you think you have it together, the kids need you to make dinner, or in my case, change a diaper or whatever, do the mom stuff. Leta: or they’re throwing up somewhere Chanelle: or they’re throwing up, exactly Leta: you’re like, “I’m hot stuff, and then, yeah, I’m a mom. Chanelle: Exactly. Leta, you were recommended to me by a listener and I just want to throw out that I love it when listeners make recommendations and I had not heard of you previously, and after this recommendation, I went out and read some of your stuff, watched your TED talk, listened to another podcast you had been on, and then I kind of wrote you a love letter, I feel like. It was a little mushy Leta: I felt a pitter patter in my heart Chanelle: “Leta, I have to have you on the show!” Actually, I edited myself a little bit there because it was a little too mushy. Leta: you know, who doesn’t love that? Chanelle: I didn’t want to cross from love letter into stalking territory so I toned it down a little Leta: That’s true. I do delete people who misunderstand what hotness means. Chanelle: That’s true, that could be a problem Leta: I have to set the boundary..with all this hotness Chanelle: So, lets start there, let’s start with hotness. How did you come to realize your true beauty and your hotness? Leta: like all of these listeners, they can’t see me so they don’t know that I’m not a size 2 bombshell with everything perfectly plump in all the right places. I am a normal mom who has the 3 C’s-padding to my stomach: children, cheesecake and chocolate and I meant every piece, I was just talking to my daughter the other day and she said mom why do you make the joke that I didn’t inherit your triple chin…I got to explain to my daughter the humor of irony…you know I’m just a normal woman with… a normal body type, and the thing is that does not diminish my beauty, my purpose, my ability to connect with other people. It is simply a reflection in a mirror that can be changed by how I choose to think about me. Anorexics see fat people in the mirror because of what they have repeatedly told themselves. Start to see who we are through more divine eyes, we will start to see our true value. I have a story about how I started to realize that I was a true hottie Chanelle: Tell us about that story Leta: When I was 15 years old I moved to a new town and I thought this was a great chance for me because I thought I could become a new person. With all the confidence of a 15 year old girl I had to stand in front of class. And I have to introduce myself and the entire room starts laughing, and the reason they were laughing is because my first name was Leta and my last name before I got married was Mon, so Lead-them-on. And that wasn’t really funny for me to have a porn star name. My mother was horrified and told me to go by Frances, my middle name. I was bitter. I had had some hard things in my life where I had not been protected and I had a conversation with my God and I was angry with Him. The good news is I was talking to God, and he wants our frustrations, our hurts, our fears. I don’t know why this line came to my mind, very clear. It said you need to practice a new way of thinking of yourself. As a truckers daughter, I had never heard anything like this before. Practice a new way of thinking of myself? And this line- Everyone in this room loves you. It took me years to realize the irony of this, I was in a room by myself. Up ‘til then, I had allowed my self talk to be I wasn’t attractive enough, fat, ugly unfortunate personality. I thought I was stupid. These things become your self talk. I walk into school repeating to myself everyone in this room loves you. In two weeks I was voted the Spirit queen, which blew my mind. There had been no new wardrobe or anything like that, I just started thinking something better about me and I became more attractive. After moving back to where I was before, kids that had teased me, now this guy was asking me out. I didn’t go out with him because he was a poopy pants. Chanelle: yeah, he was teasing you, he didn’t deserve you Leta: which developed one of my rules for life: if you can’t show respect for all girls, I won’t go out with you. ..80% of what we naturally think is negative. The natural chicky babe- we naturally think what those magazines have thrown out, what people and their poopy talk say. I just started changing what I thought about and moving things into my life on purpose and that were more to my purpose. And I’ve become someone that thinks very positive about myself, even with my normal body. Women will be like, you’re not really that hot, and I’m like “wait ‘til you get to know me- I am.” It’s not a competition with any other woman. Its actually giving permission that even if you too are not perfect, you too are wonderful and perfect and everything you are meant to be. Right now in this moment, you are enough. God has not asked us to be perfect in this moment. The concept of perfection is not one that is created by God but one that is created by he who is poopy, who wants everything to stink, who does not think we are good enough. Chanelle: I love that so much. I’ve seen that in my own life, where after I had my 5th baby, I don’t know why, I guess, you know just finally I got to this point. I don’t know that I’m the full level of hotness. I don’t know that I’m telling myself that every day. After I had my 5th baby, I just felt hot. Things are bigger and saggy and droopy, and you’re leaking, Leta: It’s a different kind of beauty. Chanelle: I felt all the kinds of beauty. Practicing a new way of thinking of yourself matters. Leta: I kept going with that intent. Even if you have a funny name, you have to define and abdicating what we choose to think about is spiritual slavery. IT’S giving up all of our potential. When we ask another person to validate us, we don’t believe it. It’s all up to us to change how we think. Chanelle: How do we do that? Leta can do this because she’s hot, but how do I get there? Leta: The first step is recognizing where you are and what is happening in your head. If they think they’re pretty positive but everything they say is negative, they need to be aware of their thoughts. Everyone gets dressed in the morning to some level. I recommend that anytime you are in your bathroom you will only say things to yourself that you would say to your child…whatever we put in is what is going to come out. Ouch, we need to look at these thoughts for the little people that call you mom, for your husband. When you’re in that space, say nice things to yourself. Your subconscious mind will believe whatever you tell it. Multitasking- do it while you’re doing something else. When you’re doing that for you, say nice things to you. Repeat whatever it is you want to work with. Work on those little tiny things. Implement it during that time, I call it vanity prayers. Being beautiful is not vain… this is the time that I am just taking care of me, so that I can walk out of that bathroom so that whatever I’ve done is a symbol of what I’ve done internally. Chanelle: What if you don’t believe what you’re saying? What if you feel like you’re lying to yourself? We are all beautiful, I believe that, but what if you can’t say that to yourself? Leta: that goes back to what is truth? What is true about you? Borrow God‘s perspective if you need to. Does God believe that you can become better? I believe that anything I need I can ask God for. What good am I putting out there believing all the poop? Everyone has negative thoughts. God expects us to change. Wherever we are in our life, we have to opportunity to start molding our brain and our life. We can mold ourselves. I was at the bottom of the scale, but I took control of how I thought about myself Chanelle: That is powerful powerful stuff. We all get the choice of what we think about ourselves. Leta: We don’t get to choose the circumstances. Before we came to live on this earth, we lived with a loving God. Multitask your affirmations. Chanelle: it’s very realistic. We’re going to get ready. We’re going to brush our teeth. Leta: even if you’re just sitting with your newborn…I have a whole story about how I met Satan. I’m at the post office and I reach down to pick up my son’s binky, and I see that the person who went to help me. I am looking into the face of Satan, he had horns, pitchfork on an ear, filed his teeth. I asked ‘what brought you to the post office?” Satan? I had never talked to Lucifer before. I kept talking with him and I said can I ask you a personal question, I assume you weren’t born that way, why did you get that done. He said God is Dead, children are ruining the planet. I said, my job as a mom is to bring him into the world and to give him life and to feel that everyone loves him. If people don’t love me I’m kind of shocked, and he said not everyone loves him and I said my job is to give him tools. And I said, I’m so sorry that no one did that for you. He teared up. He was a symbol of what he thought about and what he believed. At the end of the day, Satan did reach down to help me. When we are confronting our inner demons, what message are we sending out to the world? We need to let them know that life is good and everyone can love them, and those that don’t are just broken and that’s okay, we just give them love. Chanelle: I am sad that we’re out of time, we are going to have to have you back…In the bit of time we have left, what is burning that you need to share? Leta: we all have hard things and you might be thinking that I don’t get it but I will say that our savior Jesus Christ gets it and he wants so much for you. Being able to be a mom is a gift. It is a sacred responsibility god knew that you would have your broken places and to invite him in. God gave you those broken places to be able to teach your children Chanelle: That is key for all of us, to use those broken places to help other people. It starts with knowing who we are and allowing ourselves to feel good and get rid of the poopy talk Leta: that’s how he gets us. He brings us down with poopy talk. Chanelle's priority has always been her family and being a mom, but she's found a way to set her own schedule and create a career around yoga that fits within her life as a mom.
