Tune in here to this Wednesday's edition of Breaking With Brett Jensen! Breaking with Brett Jensen kicks the show off by talking about the shifting voter registration numbers in North Carolina and the GOP’s growing momentum statewide. Brett interviews NC GOP Chair Jason Simmons, who says Republicans are now less than 25,000 voters behind Democrats—a massive shift from a 645,000-voter gap in 2016. Simmons credits this to Republican policy successes and Democratic missteps. He also discusses upcoming Senate races, election integrity issues, and legal battles involving the NC Board of Elections. Later, Brett turns to Mecklenburg County GOP Chair Kyle Kirby, who outlines his vision for revitalizing the party in North Carolina’s bluest county. Kirby highlights the opening of a permanent GOP headquarters, a focus on running candidates in every race, and deeper outreach to young and minority conservatives. Also, Jensen talks with North Carolina Representative David Willis, who introduced a new bipartisan bill aimed at supporting fatherhood initiatives across the state. Inspired by his own experience growing up without a father, Willis held a press conference in Raleigh to unveil expanded funding for the All Pro Dad program—founded by NFL Hall of Famer Tony Dungy—which helps fathers stay actively involved in their children's lives. NC Board of Elections unanimously approves a resolution modifying voting locations for those displaced by Hurricane Helene flooding. Hurricane Milton continues its approach towards Florida. Responsibility to who we are in Christ is key to leadership for Christians at every level. That includes those leading in the political arena. Today's program lassos some national concerns and mindsets to consider their implications on a local level. Speaking from within the 3rd fastest growing county in NC, today's topics range from civic involvement to the dividing lines presented by COVID-related issues. and from a vision for community to responsible use of funds allocated by the American Rescue Plan ARP).Today's guests are Bishop Chris Parker and Harry Southerland, Chairman of Hoke County, NC Board of Commissioners.

WRAL's political cartoonish (yes, a TV station has a political cartoonist) calls Republican members of the North Carolina Board of Education members of the KKK for opposing the use of Critical Race Theory to create new standards for K-12 Social Studies and History. One of those members is the first Black Lt. Gov. ever elected in NC. Another is a Native American. A third runs a ministry that was awarded the MLK Dream in Action Award. This kind of racist smear is dangerous and corrosive to our society, and it should be denounced as such by everyone associated with WRAL -- under the standard advanced by WRAL when it covers Republican scandals and gaffes. The North Carolina Board of Education met this week to discuss approval of new standards for Social Studies 7 History in Grades K-12. Republicans objected to the "tone" of the standards that case America as oppressive, without highlighting progress and exceptionalism. Democrats denied there was any such tone, and argued that systemic racism exists and needs to be part of instruction. But in a sign of how entrenched the concept is in education, nobody even mentioned the underlying issue -- which is Critical Race Theory. BSS Podcast Ep. 66 – Goal Sharing! This week is the first week of the year and Mike and Ryan are sharing their goals with everyone! Ryan shares his business goals of increasing his revenue by $50,000 but operating at a 50% margin. He’s not interested in going to next level, he would have to expand his staff, equipment plus a slew of additional add-ons which may temporarily dip his margin. So, for now, he’s comfortable with this goal in order to get some of his time back. Additionally, he has a goal of leveraging his talents alongside a growing successful ‘YouTuber’ personality. Ryan would be interested in managing, producing and shooting video in order to elevate their platform to the next level. He’s been after this for the last 2 years and keeps getting closer as his vast network and experience rises. Personally, Ryan has goals of playing more golf, dropping to 225lbs and attempt a ½ marathon. Mike shares his business goals starting with EC Grading & Demo. He wants to do $1.2 million in revenue but ultimately spend more time on this business as the growth potential is there to do it. As far as his coaching business, WinRate Consulting which has continued to double year after year, his goal is to get to $500K in 2021. His online course under WinRate Education, The School of Construction Selling is in the process of getting approved for continuing education credits for the NC Board of General Contractors for 2021. Our goal is to gross $50K on that in the first year. If you are reading this or listening to this, our goal for this podcast is 50,000 downloads in 2021. Be honest: prior to the last couple years, did you know who was on your North Carolina State Board of Elections? (You don't have to confess it out loud.) For a number of reasons, voting, elections, ballots and how they're all organized and run have come under higher scrutiny than any time we can remember. Someone who has thought about these issues for a number of years now--even prior to holding an official position--is Damon Circosta, the current Chair of the NC Board of Elections, a guy who was thinking about free and fair elections all the way back in college in Arizona. In our interview, he breaks down some important dates and details of this fall's election process, and hopefully makes you feel even better about North Carolina's process being safe, secure and fair. The democratic process should never be taken for granted, but there's also a lot of unnecessary noise that Damon and others hope can get tuned out as we try to accomplish the important task of holding an election during a pandemic.Damon is also the executive director of the A.J. Fletcher Foundation, but we opted to do an entire episode looking at his role on the Board of Elections, and will bring you part two of the interview in a future episode this season. Please support the businesses who support us: Papa Murphy's Take N Bake Pizza of Raleigh and Steele Residential. We hope you enjoy Season 3 of Podcast Raleigh!Subscribe to Podcast Raleigh on your favorite podcast sites so you never miss an episode, and if you enjoy it we'd love for you to rate or read a comment:Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/podcast-raleigh/id1458907220Google: https://play.google.com/music/listen?u=0#/ps/Inzk5woxrsjwf3zhd5vv3av4yeiStitcher: https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/podcast-raleighSpotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/6b3dVvLJfO0EqvDGQaFTAP
Our title topic takes us to research you can do right now to prepare to vote as early as possible. Absentee (mail-in) ballots start going out September 4 to those who have requested them, and the NC Board of Elections web site is about to take those requests online, and let you track your request and submission.Note that it takes pretty much an hour to get to that topic. We waste that time talking to our fan (not our biggest fan… just out fan, Kevin Flanagan, one of the hosts of Drinking Liberally Raleigh. Lance welcomes the listener to the Red X Podcast. This episode features Private Investigator, Michael Longmire from the North Carolina Board of Massage and Body Therapy. Nicole also reports on a recent sting in Knightdale. Lance Olive shares a recent date night with wife Cheryl in which they watched the movie, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter And Nicole tells the story of wiping out in a roller skating race at a local rink. As an icebreaker, Lance asks questions about New Year’s Eve trivia. Did you know that in Spain, it’s tradition to stuff a grape into your mouth for every bong of the clock at midnight? It's called The Twelve Grapes of Luck. In Mexico, the color of your underwear reflects your hopes for the new year and in Denmark, neighbors throw pots and pans at neighbors’ doors as a symbol of well-wishing. Nicole reports on a recent sting operation to shut down an illegal massage business operating in a small North Carolina town that was a front for a brothel. The business was being run by a woman. An employee from a neighboring business in the same strip mall had provided the original tip to police that resulted in their shut down. On this episode, Nicole interviews Private Investigator, Michael Longmire who was hired by the NC Board of Massage and Bodywork Therapy. Michael clarifies that the term “massage parlors” has a connotation with adult establishments and that unlicensed massage establishments are referred to “illegal massage businesses”. The legal massage industry seeks to close illegal massage businesses, many of them operating as brothels, and hired Michael two years ago to investigate these illegal establishments. Michael estimates that there may be as many as 500 illegal massage businesses in the state and that there are 9,000 across the country. He says that these businesses are “almost like slavery”. Victims working for sexual services have no other choice. They are often undocumented from either China or Korea, live in the establishment and are required to work long hours without adequate pay. Michael also says that the reason they are here is because there is a demand. Many of the victims get lured or forced into the industry with the hope of sending money back to their families in their native countries. The Board wants to encourage communities to pressure these businesses to close and to offer victims services. The illegal massage businesses are typically easily identified: advertisements promote the person providing the service rather than the service and include language such as “provides a happy ending.” Many of the ads are posted on backpage.com. The establishments might also restrict clientele to men and prohibit services to those of certain races or under a certain age. They are open 7 days a week, 12-14 hours a day and are often located in a strip mall or even in larger malls. Clients may be seen parking far away from the business and “sneaking” into the front door. Legitimate massage and bodywork businesses require licenses and continuing education. North Carolina is working on a database that interested customers can reference to see if a business is operating legally. There are documented cases of coercion being involved with keeping the victims in the business. Michael says that Polaris recently received a tip that there was someone being physically forced into a business after being pulled from a car. In another case, a woman who had escaped a business and left the state later reentered NC and began working in another business. The original business owner, discovered the woman at the second business and assaulted her. In addition to coercion tactics, victims are often kept in place because of debt bondage they have incurred to the business owner. Typical rescue efforts don’t include places for the victims to stay that include culturally sensitive care. For example, there is nowhere for victims to receive counseling in their native language. Furthermore, victims need special legal assistance to handle their potential illegal immigration status. If you suspect an illegal massage business, contact your state’s Board of Massage and Bodyworks Therapy or local law enforcement. More law enforcement will need additional training to human trafficking training to appropriately respond to the specific needs of massage victims. Michael also says that there is a need for Chinese Americans to come alongside efforts so that there will be more culturally sensitive responses as well as to put pressure on the Chinese American business owners to shut down. If you are in North Carolina and wish to report a potential illegal massage business, call 919-546-0050. Or, you can go to www.bmbt.org and file a complaint. You can also contact Michael Longmire through the website if you’d like to learn more about the issue or have him speak to your group.
