"So these became for me my rule of life: I'm going to do Scripture before phone. I'm going to do at least one communal meal a day. I'm going to turn my phone off for at least one hour each evening. And these were counter-liturgies to the habits I already had." Today's Episode: Listen in as Natalie talks all things "habits" with author and expert, Justin Whitlmel Earley. He tells us that we don't stop bad habits, but replace them with better habits. He calls our attention to all of the bells and dings we respond to throughout our days and asks us to create our own intentional "counter-habits" of bells and dings. He speaks with practicality and compassion about our calling as believers to live out the faith we say we believe by creating habits that will keep us on the right path. It's a compelling, super-helpful conversation—one that will have you putting Justin's books on your reading list this year.  This month's memory verse: “I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” — Phil 3:14Today's guest: Justin Whitmel Earley is a lawyer, author and speaker from Richmond, VA. “First, we form habits, they they form us. Conquer your bad habits, or they'll eventually conquer you.” - AnonymousMost of us don't really think about our daily habits. Aside from our morning coffee or making lunch for the kids before they head off to school - our days just kind of happen. If we started being intentional in the way we lived each day, how much of a difference could we expect to see? Today, Paige welcomes author, speaker, and lawyer Justin Whitmel Earley to discuss the power of habits and more specifically his book, Habits of the Household. With grace and encouragement, Justin shares how intentionality in the areas of discipleship to Jesus, dedication to your spouse, and focused parenting leads to a life positioned toward peace and growth. Paige's Takeaways:Our Routines Become Who We AreWhen we aren't intentional in our routines, we tend to be emotional and reactionary - which means our “routines” can be stressful. To become intentional - we need a plan!Start with creating a Rule of Life. What do you value as a family? What are your expectations for how you relate to each other and to your community? What do you want to prioritize in your life?Discipline - What it Is and What it Isn'tThere's a difference between punishment and disciplinePunishment is about inflicting pain/hurting someone as a consequence of their mistake or deliberate actionDiscipline allows for consequences, but it's based on a foundation of teaching: teaching why their actions were harmful (to others and themselves), asking where their reaction came from (a place of anger, hurt, confusion, shame, etc.), helping to change their heart to act out of truth and right action next time. Take a ‘Pause Prayer' moment. Invite God into the equation! Resources:Paige ClingenpeelQuestions About the Podcast? How do we live in the most connected generation and yet feel so alone? What do we do when we find ourselves struggling with loneliness? Author and lawyer Justin Whitmel Earley argues that loneliness isn't the way God intended for us to live because we were made for deep and intentional friendships. It was his own journey through a season of depression and anxiety led him to discover the power of spiritual disciplines including the practice of embodied community. In his latest book, Made for People: Why We Drift into Loneliness and How to Fight for a Life of Friendship, Justin looks at how we as a culture have gotten to this epidemic of loneliness and how we can find our way back to what God has for us when it comes to friendship. In this episode, Davey talks with Justin on how spiritual disciplines can help us in our suffering, the ways in which our daily decisions are forming us and how to combat loneliness with true, Christ-centered connection. If you are struggling with feeling alone even though your life is full of interactions each and every day, this conversation will help you recognize how to take the first steps towards the life-giving friendships God has for you.   Website: https://www.justinwhitmelearley.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/justinwhitmelearley/ Book: The Common Rule: Habits of Purpose in an Age of Distraction https://a.co/d/jc0XVmY Habits of the Household: Practicing the Story of God in Everyday Family Rhythms https://a.co/d/gNVJHGk Made for People: Why We Drift into Loneliness and How to Fight for a Life of Friendship https://a.co/d/akLPtMI Life is difficult and pain is real. Guest: Chris Sherrod, Marriage and Family Director, Watermark Community Church, Dallas, TX What is the “state of marriage” in America? Over the past 50 years, the marriage rate has dropped by almost 60% The number of women entering their first marriage between the ages of 40 and 59 has jumped 75% in 1990 Men, how can you be “successful” in your marriage and leading your family? OYOG - Own Your Own Growth. Leading your family starts with your own spiritual growth and maturity! You can't teach what you don't know; you can't pass on what you don't have. Oxygen mask example - put yours on first! The fruit of godliness starts with the seed of godliness being planted in you first. If something is important, you make time for it; if it's not important, you make excuses. Leading means “encouraging faith in their heart.” You need to know what encourages faith in your wife and children. Leadership isn't just a one-way street, you need to learn to ask questions…Jesus asked more questions than He answered! Ephesians 5 concept - love, serve, and lead. God wants your dependence, not your performance. Love your wife unconditionally, as Christ loved the church (sacrificially). This is a daily opportunity! Take the initiative to “wash her with the Word” - whatever that looks like for you, look for opportunities to engage each other with the Word of God! Great question to ask: “How can I be praying for you?” Deut. 6 - “teach your children” from a Biblical perspective means to “sharpen them.” When can you do this? Find windows of opportunities - in the morning, at dinner, when you put them to bed, etc. Great resource for this is Habits of the Household: Practicing the Story of God in Everyday Family Rhythms by Justin Whitmel Earley. Create a place in your home that has your “Ebenezer stones of remembrance” - symbols of God's goodness and provision in the history of your life and family - and go back and tell the stories of what God has done for you to your kids and grandkids (see Psalm 78). Pause prayers before moments of discipline.   dadAWESOME   We're on a mission to add LIFE to the dad life. We're passionate about helping dads live fully alive as they lead their kids to God's awesomeness.  | YouTube |  Instagram | Facebook   Justin Earley   Justin Whitmel Earley is a lawyer, author and speaker from Richmond, VA. He is married to Lauren and has four sons – Whit, Asher, Coulter and Shep. He graduated from the University of Virginia with a degree in English Literature before spending four years in Shanghai, China, as a missionary. Justin got his law degree from the Georgetown University Law Center and he now runs his own business law practice in Richmond, Virginia at Earley Legal Group. His book, The Common Rule – Habits of Purpose for an Age of Distraction, was published with InterVarsity Press in 2019. Justin also writes fiction and poetry, and is working on a children's book.    Key Quotes (Full Transcript of the Conversation Here)   22:53 - "The idea of a pause prayers, before approaching a moment of discipline, have a short emphasis on short moment of prayer in your head, just to say, Lord, help me discipline this child like you discipline me, which is full of grace and truth, right? And it could just be Lord help, but some way of looking up to God before you look down at them so that you can be more like the God who parents you as you parent them." 27:49 - "I want to step on that so much because the fact that you fight with your kids or your spouse is completely ordinary. That's what happens to everyone in every family, whether you reconcile with your spouse and your kids, it's completely unordinary, that's what barely ever happens. And that's why families often go the way they do, in dysfunction. So the question of a Christian household is not whether we fight, we all do, question of a Christian household is whether we reconcile to them the way God reconciles to us. You need habits for that."   Conversation Links   Justin's Website The Earley Legal Group The Common Rule Habits of the Household   Links from dadAWESOME   https://dadawesome.org/life/ Make a Donation to dadAWESOME Join the dadAWESOME Prayer Team Receive weekly encouragement by texting "dad" to 651-370-8618

I read a book recently called Habits of the Household: Practicing the Story of God in Everyday Family Rhythms. A publicist had reached out to see if we wanted to have the author on the podcast and she sent me a copy of the book. You need to know that I truly research everyone on our show, and read their stuff to see if they will be valuable to our audience.  I do this because I want to give our listeners something that will help them strengthen their own family so they can love others outside their immediate family well    I honestly was a little nervous to read this book, not because I don't love habits, but I thought it might feel like more things to do in our already busy schedule or even guilt that we aren't doing some habits we should be. BUT…. this book is none of those things. There is so much grace in Justin and this book, and it is wild to see how many things we are already doing in our family that we can just add a little intention to and it will change everything.   I loved this conversation so much; it made me think, challenged me, and also encouraged me that we are on the right track. You will get some tangible action items immediately after listening to this episode to put habits in your family that could truly change your family dynamic.    Get Justin's book: Habits of the Household Or his first book: The Common Rule    Connect with Justin https://www.justinwhitmelearley.com/ Instagram:

We all have habits that fill our parenting, but are they the ones we choose? Justin Whitmel Earley says that “Our routines become who we are, good or bad, and over time they become the story and culture of our families.” If we do not carefully choose our habits, we end up falling back on rhythms that are forming us to be distracted, overstimulated, too busy, and lonely. Justin Whitmel Earley is a lawyer, author, speaker, and father to four boys! I have quickily become a huge fan of his new book, Habits of the Household: Practicing the Story of God in Everyday Family Rhythms. In this episode, Justin and I talk about how the book came to be, (a story we will ALL relate to!) and some of the habits and liturgies families can use to reduce chaos and create sweeter daily rhythms. We camp out on technology for a bit because I love that part of his book. If you are not already family with Justin, I think you'll feel like you made a new friend after listening.
