The Case: Lynn has Hashimoto's and experiences fatigue, brain fog and mood swings. She takes thyroid medication and various supplements but still struggles to feel well. She's frustrated because she eats well and follows a good thyroid protocol without the results. The Investigation When I met Lynn, I saw that her TSH was fluctuating so we needed to stabilize her immune system. She was already following much of my advice with her diet and supplements. There were a few minor improvements we could make but my sense was that something else was playing a role in addition to her biochemistry. What is a Psychoimmunologist? If you've never heard the term psychoneuroimmunology (sometimes referred to simply as psychoimmunology) it is the study of how the mind can affect the immune system. Dr. Mario Martinez, a best-selling author is a thought leader in the field of psychoneuroimmunology with his books, “The Mind-Body Code: How the Mind Wounds and Heals the Body” and “The MindBody Self: How Longevity Is Culturally Learned and the Causes of Health Are Inherited” as well as his online courses, groups, and mentorships. He's been a popular guest on the show before and I knew he was perfect to join us to shed some light on this health mystery. Especially because lately, he's been working on the role that authenticity plays in our immune health and our thyroid health. What is Authenticity? Dr. Martinez says that there is a tremendous misconception around authenticity and inauthenticity. He explains that many of us were raised in a culture where being authentic simply means to be yourself and be honest. But, he says, that's not enough. In his research, looking at the origin of the word ‘authenticity' and how philosophers have pondered it in the past, he feels that being your honest self is only a surface version of yourself. This is because we internalize, morph, and sometimes forget who we are and what we want, in order to fit in with our tribe or cultural expectations. And then, we lose or forget our true self. How Inauthenticity Causes Illness Behaving outside of our truth creates a stress response that over time, can create a real health issue. Even when we think we are being authentic, we may be fooling ourselves. The more we repeat these false beliefs about ourselves, and the more we speak about them (because language has power), the more concrete these false-perceptions feel. These feelings become our truth, even though they do not represent our true authentic self. And this can subconsciously cause an imbalance in the immune system through the mind-body connection because our language does not match our true authentic self. For example, if you say, “I am a good person”. Your psycho terminology may trigger your mind to look for evidence of whether you're a good person or not. And if you begin to look at when you're not being a good person and that you have a history of not being a good person, you create an incoherence which triggers a stress response. If this continues, then you may find yourself with chronically high levels of cortisol. Which, in turn, can release inflammatory molecules, increasing a propensity for particular illnesses. Dr. Martinez shared another hypothetical example about a little girl who learned to be submission to survive an abusive father. This submissiveness was necessary at the time. However, she may begin to believe that this is part of who she truly is. But, when she carries it forward into parts of her life where it is not necessary for survival, she may struggle to get the things she wants. Her learned truth and her real truth are out of balance. She is so used to being oppressed that she falls into a perceived helplessness. The moment that you feel helpless, like you don't have resources to deal with something overcoming you, your natural killer cells go down, your ideas go down, your inflammation goes up, and your immune system becomes helpless because you have a helpless consciousness. But, when you are an adult and the context is different (you actually do have resources, you're not in danger of being hurt) and you have this response, there is a disconnect between your behavior and the reality of the situation. Overtime, this can lead to serious health issues. It's important to note that this doesn't mean inauthenticity causes illness but it can increase the propensity for it. How Do You Know If You're Being Inauthentic? If being authentic isn't simply being honest and has so much to do with the subconscious mind, or learned false-beliefs, how can you tell if you are being inauthentic? Dr. Martinez says the answer is in your innate response. When you are behaving in a way that is inauthentic, you can feel it. However, many of us have become desensitized to these physical responses. Awareness and learning to identify that feeling of being inauthentic (for example, saying yes in an effort to people-please) is the first step in moving out of living an inauthentic life. How To Stop Being Inauthentic The first step is that awareness. You must realize when the feeling comes up so you can identify what you are being inauthentic about. The next is to start to honor your authentic self. For example, if you don't like Italian food and someone asks if you'd like to go to an Italian restaurant. Your instinct may be to acquiesce but this will trigger a physical response because you know you don't really want to go there. So, you need to speak up and say, no thank you (and then maybe suggest a place you would like to go). Acting more in accordance with your authentic self is important but it can be harder than it sounds. Dr. Martinez explains that it can help to remember how it felt the last time you were in alignment with your authentic self. For example, if your belief is that you are a nervous person. You need to remember what it felt like to not be nervous as you are telling yourself that you are not a nervous person. Immersing yourself in the sensation of the memory will help you feel aligned with your authentic self. In this episode, Dr. Martinez also shares some great questions you can ask yourself to help you stay in authenticity. How Quickly Will You See Health Benefits from being Truly Authentic? Dr. Martinez says that the physical response to stepping out of inauthenticity is very quick. He explains that because you're changing the cycle terminology, the body will no longer be in that state of alarm. This should help your basal cortisol drop and your inflammation should decrease because there is no longer a need for this stress response. However, he warns that changing your language and thought patterns (that may be very well ingrained) may take some time. You have to continue to watch your reactions to situations, your natural tendencies that may be to act inauthentically, and the language you use about doing things you may not want to do even if you're doing them with authenticity. He says that you should approach situations with novelty and curiosity because these two things put your brain into ‘discovery' which reduces stress. Mystery Solved Lynn's TSH was constantly fluctuating and she was having frequent flare ups (her thyroid type is the one that I call Hashimoto's with an agitated response - listen to episode 111 for more on thyroid types). To support this, I worked on further balancing her immune system with immune balancing nutrients. We also addressed immune triggers. And by the way if you are wondering how to balance the immune system and address all the different Hashimoto's triggers I teach all of that in a very step-by-step way in my Thyroid Mystery Solved Course. Happy Ending With Lynn's thyroid properly supported, we also started exploring authenticity. We looked at what she wasn't expressing as well as exploring what felt incoherent. We discovered inauthenticities coming up in her relationship, job and even some of her desires. There was quite a disconnect from what she wanted and what she was taught as a little girl was bad. It was a process but soon she was clear about what was important to her. We worked on this together and she also worked on this with a coach I referred her to. Once she was able to really express and feel coherent, she found that life felt lighter, more joyful, more at peace from an emotional perspective. And, her TSH stabilized. Her moods were balanced and her energy returned. Eliminating Health Mysteries For Lynn we were able to find that missing piece of the health puzzle in her authenticity. It helped her regain her health. Could this be the missing clue for you or someone in your life? Links: Resources Mentioned Thyroid Mystery Solved Course Thanks to my guest Dr. Mario Martinez. Welcome to A Counselors Journey To Private Practice. I'm your host, Juan. Rebecca Toner Is A Multi-Passionate Entrepreneur | Episode 48 About Rebecca Toner Rebecca Toner, MA, LPC is a group private practice owner, clinical supervisor, EMDR consultant-in-training, and host of the Supportive SuperVision Podcast. She specializes in trauma work and combines both her clinical practice of EMDR and her clinical supervision/consultation practice with an Internal Family Systems model. She's a multi-passionate entrepreneur whose mission is to help heal as many lives as possible through direct clinical practice, supervision, and EMDR consulting. Supervision as a NicheIf you build a private practice, you can build a supervision practice. Many people are worried about supervising other people. To supervise, you need to be comfortable explaining how someone could improve. Give your clinicians permission to be human – no one is perfect, and mistakes happen. As a supervisor, show up and be human. Make the people you are supervising feel safe. How Do You Know If You're Ready To Be A Supervisor?Usually, there are people way less qualified than we are doing what we want to do. There's no way to work up through the ranks to supervisor in private practice. So, think about sitting through some continuing education. When you go through training, then you will start to feel more comfortable. Most clinicians are ready to become supervisors. It's just a matter of finding the confidence to start. Everyone has one or two things that they are very good at. If you're good at helping clients with boundaries, think about how you can advise other clinicians. That way, you will start to build confidence. Plus, when you are in a supervisor role, you are merely giving suggestions. The clinician can listen to you, but if they don't, then that's okay. Other people can learn a lot from you! Start putting it out there – even if it's just on Instagram. Test the waters. Somebody probably needs to know what you know! Optimize your organic reach right now for fitness business success in the coming months. No matter when you're listening (reading) this, it's time to do this. If you haven't started early and aren't already 60 days into your pre-launch for the new year (as I create this early December 2020) then put on your calendar RIGHT NOW to start October 1, 2021 preparing for Jan 1 2022. For now? Let's roll up our sleeves and start making what you're doing now matter more. Need help? I'll get you lift off AND 10 months of branding, marketing, and selling strategies if you're working with women in midlife. Use key words. Distribute key words in three places: title content meta description If you're on word press, use a tool called Yoast, even on the free level to help you know when you've done this. Before that you need to do some homework. Do you know the words you want to be “found for”? These are words that you deliver on. These are the problems your clients come to you with, in their words not yours. Key words are a part of the transformation your clients want. Your key words are a mixture of the problem and the solution that your ideal customer wants. So before key words even? You need to know what your favorite customers of all time, who made the most progress, and loved working with you, say they want. What do they say they're grateful for? Because you and I could say we give our clients muscle mass and strength. But even in 2020 when I write about it constantly and you're reading about it as the way to help and support them, it still is not what they ask “Dr. Google” at 8pm on their couch watching Hallmark movies. It's not what they search for at 2pm when they should be working but they're distracted by feelings of bloat or discomfort in clothes that don't fit any more. How to Improve Your Organic Reach (Homework exercise) What are those words? Take a moment and come to the show notes later and do this homework because it's big. Problem #1 Way my client describes her problem: #2 Way my client describes her problem: Transformation #1 Way my client describes what she wants: #2 Way my client describes what she wants: Personal Condition #1 Word or phrase that describe my client's status (in her words) #2 Word or phrase that describe my client's status (in her words) Some combination of problem or solution plus condition are your key words. Do your homework. The Mistake that Fails Your Organic Reach Does this sound familiar? You know you need to post regularly on social media. So you set aside time to do it, create the graphics, a quote, or take a picture, even invest 30 minutes in creating a REELS. But do you go into action doing that before you even think about what your ideal client is thinking or feeling right now? No judgment here. I've done it too. Not that long ago I spent hours on Sunday creating my week's posts for the week, cueing them up as scheduled on platforms and wa-la, done! (I'm typing wa-la thinking I don't even know if that's a word!) Them vs You Here's the deal…. If your posts are pushing your content and information that you think people NEED out there… it will fail to get you traction. It's a conversation. When you do that it's like sitting across from someone who is talking and instead of listening, you're thinking about what to say next. You may have the answer to their problem but it's not going to resonate with them if you deliver it like what they just said doesn't matter. How Do You Know If You're Falling Short? Look at what you've been doing. How well has it been working? If you continue to do more of it… how will you get different results? If your reach over the last 3 weeks has not gone UP, it's time to change. On a blog post, use all of the previously mentioned. The same goes for your show notes if you're podcasting. What about social media? Both YouTube and now Instagram even are becoming more like search engines. So if you're not doing the same with title, description, tags on YT and using hashtag strategy that works on Instagram, you'll fail. Instagram is Good for Your Organic Reach, Too, Done Right Instagram strategy is not posting daily. It includes the right hashtags based on research, the right number of hashtags, relevant hashtags for your content, the right use of images, graphics, memes, quotes, and your content matters. Are you telling stories? It's social remember. So longer posts that describe who you are, and why anyone will care about what you say are important. Ask questions. Use your timeline, stories, IGTV and REELS as well as lives. Encourage DMs to communicate. Especially when you're smaller, it's possible to generate leads and customers so long as you're not selling on social. Your Organic Reach vs Paid Traffic Know that once you begin using paid advertising your organic reach will go down significantly. A platform that knows you'll pay to play will begin to require it. A good rule of thumb though is that if your organic reach isn't going up, you don't want to pay for it to reach more people who won't respond! Always look at how something does organically first, then build on that momentum. It's the same way January is a busy month in fitness, right? It's the month you should be advertising the most. There you have it. Not so secret secrets… and the biggest one of all is doing these consistently. Links mentioned in this episode will be in the show notes at fitnessmarketingmastery-dot-com/organic-reach Resources: 10-month mastermind

I’m joined by historian and podcaster Patrick Wyman, whose “The Fall of Rome” and “Tides of History” are two of the very best historical podcasts out there, to discuss pandemic diseases in Roman history. We’re talking the Antonine Plague, the Plague of Cyprian, and the Plague of Justinian, and what they meant to the Roman Empire and (especially in the latter case) to world history in general. Later, and apropos of nothing in particular, we discuss Patrick’s recent piece for Mother Jones, “How Do You Know If You’re Living Through the Death of an Empire?”The Fall of Rome and Tides of History are both available via Wondery or wherever you get your podcasts, and I can’t recommend them enough. As Patrick notes toward the end of the interview he’s got a book coming out in the near future, so keep an eye out for that. You can find Patrick on Twitter @Patrick_Wyman. This is a public episode. An uncertain future is part of life, no matter how much we can fool ourselves to think otherwise when things seem stable. We never know exactly what's around the corner. Most entrepreneurs, including myself, have had multiple pivots. Sometimes it's out of dissatisfaction and a hunger for purpose - seeking that place we're supposed to be, where we feel put to good use. Other times it's out of necessity. The way we've done things isn't working anymore and we have to do something different. The most potent pivots can happen when it's both. We are being forced to change out of necessity and we move towards passion, instead of collapsing into our fear. That's what Gina Molinari did with her career and one reason why I'm sharing her interview with you first. Gina Molinari, affectionately known as Gina Mo, is a Confident Communication Coach. She helps purpose-driven entrepreneurs get clear and confident in becoming the face of their business so they can create the consistency that it takes to create momentum, results, and impact with their work. Some people think I help people find their calling. But I’ll be the first to tell you that’s not what I do. It’s just not my thing. The idea that there is only one purpose I was put on this Earth to do is paralyzing. I actually believe there are many things I could do that would get me excited about going to work on a Monday morning. And I think the same is probably true for you. Related: Why You Shouldn’t Worry About Finding Your Calling That’s why I don’t deal with callings. Instead, I help people discover something they’re really good at and enjoy doing, so they can turn it into a business they love. I love this because when people know what they’re passionate about, they begin to live intentionally in their purpose. They become more thoughtful and action-oriented because now they know exactly what to go after. Rather than just reacting to whatever life throws at them, they set goals and carefully evaluate the steps needed to get there. This is important because when you decide to live on purpose in your purpose, you’ll experience more fulfillment and success. Why? Because nothing will push you to work harder than whatever it is that fires you up. So let me ask you: Is this the kind of life you’re living today? I know it can be hard to feel sure, which is why I have three clues you can look for to figure this out. How Do You Know If You’re Living an Intentional Life? 1. You’re Living in Your Gifts and Strengths I believe God made you 100% unique. There’s no one else on this Earth who has your combination of voice, style, perspective, experience and interests. Understanding and utilizing the gifts God has given you in your business is critical to your success. Like I said earlier: When you’re not working in your strengths, you not only won’t enjoy your work, but you’ll also lack the motivation to push through the rough patches. And let me tell you, there are a lot of those in business. If you could use more encouragement around using your God-given gifts in business, download my free 7-Day Devotional in the Resources section below. 2. You’re Passionate About What You’re Pursuing Just like your strengths and your gifts, God also created you with unique interests, values and passions. I love dancing, but I hate details. I get really excited about adventure and being outside, but I’m not a fan of math, history or science. I’m passionate about people and relationships, but I’m not crazy about politics. But you know what’s so fascinating? There are lots of people out there who do get excited about the things I don’t like. So what gets you excited? What makes you light up and come alive? What gives you energy and joy? Take your time thinking and praying over these questions. It will help you identify whether you’re actually passionate about what you’re doing. Related: How to Find Your Passion and Grow a Business You Love 3. You’re Making a Difference God didn’t create any of us to be an island—off on our own unconcerned about the rest of the world. In fact, I believe He created us to live and work in community. It means He gave us our unique strengths, gifts and passions for the purpose of blessing other people. When you focus on the needs of the people you’re helping and serving, you’re making a difference. You’re impacting someone’s life, and that’s a clear indicator that you’re exactly where you need to be. This week, I want to challenge you to look for specific examples of each clue in your life. Are you living in your strengths? Are you passionate about what you’re doing? Are you making a difference in some way? The list you compile should tell you one of two things: You’re doing exactly what you should be doing right now. It’s time to start making small changes that will lead you where you want to be in the future. Related: How to Push Past Your Comfort Zone and Try Something New How to Cultivate a Life of Purpose with Lara Casey My guest today has built her life around intentional living, and she’s experienced a lot of success because of it. Lara Casey is the CEO of Cultivate What Matters, author of the books Cultivate and Make It Happen, creator of PowerSheets and the host of the podcast Cultivate Your Life. Lara is passionate about creating tools to help women live out their purpose right where they are. Clearly, she’s doing it in so many different ways! Her story is filled with many turns and detours. Too often, we don’t understand the winding path we’ve been on. But Lara encourages us to embrace our journey anyway because God can use all of it. I love how Lara puts it: “Sometimes we look back at our paths to where we are now and some of the pieces can feel very disconnected. But I’m so grateful to look back and see how deeply connected each one of my pieces is.” On today’s episode, we talk about: How to connect the dots in your past to discover your purpose Living with intention versus living by accident Practical ways to start living on purpose today Dealing with disappointment when you don’t meet your goals Taking the pressure to always say yes off ourselves (and others) From Intentional Living to Intentional Selling Long before I created Business Boutique—before there was a book, a podcast, a live event and an Academy—I spent many months on the phone doing the not-so-glamorous work of gathering research. I wanted to learn everything I could about people with side businesses. Related: Market Research: How to Know What Your Customers Want I had a list of questions I asked each and every person I interviewed. One question was: “How do you feel about selling?” Every single person responded the same way. They all had negative things to say about sales. And I totally get it! Selling is uncomfortable and intimidating, even if you’ve been in business for a while. But you know what surprised me the most? After the question about selling, I would always ask, “Why do you love this business?” Y’all, I would literally hear an audible shift in the tone of their voice as each one told me the story behind their business. I remember one photographer telling me, “I love capturing these moments and memories that matter.” Another woman who sewed dresses for little girls said, “I love seeing little girls in the church lobby on Sunday morning twirling around in a dress that I sewed them.” As they shared their hearts with me, I immediately wanted to buy from them right then and there. Why? Because that kind of passion is attractive and draws you in. That is the power of story. You don’t have to feel slimy or be pushy or get on people’s nerves to sell your product or service. Instead, I want to encourage you to simply share your story. Share your why with your potential customer. When you do that, the sale will naturally follow. #AskChristyWright On today’s #AskChristyWright segment, we talk about the pros and cons of selling your products on Etsy versus launching your own website. We also talk about standing out from the competition on Etsy and how to leverage your current and past customers. I love hearing directly from you.
