A note from Talking Taiwan host Felicia Lin: In May of 2020 I interviewed Valerie Soe and Kristina Wong about the Auntie Sewing Squad, a sewing circle that was formed on March 24th during the global Coronavirus pandemic. Initially the group sewed masks for frontline medical and essential workers, and then for vulnerable marginalized communities. From the outset, Kristina described the Auntie Sewing Squad as a stop gap measure, and said that she had no intention of turning it into a nonprofit. In fact, she stated that the nature of what the Auntie Sewing Squad does is not sustainable in the long run and that the goal would be for the group to eventually retire. The work of the Auntie Sewing Squad, has gone beyond mask making. So, when I learned that the Auntie Sewing Squad had set a date to retire, I had to invite Valerie and Kristina back on to talk about the Auntie Sewing Squad's retirement. Here's a little preview of what we talked about in this podcast episode: Why and when the Auntie Sewing Squad is going into retirement The work that the Auntie Sewing Squad has done aside from sewing masks How the Auntie Sewing Squad is spending $10,000 on N-95 masks for farmworkers who have to work during the wildfires How Kristina and the Auntie Sewing Squad allocates food and supplies from the L.A. food bank to communities in need The Super Aunties of the Auntie Sewing Squad How the Auntie Sewing Squad is not the alternative to FEMA The other ways that Aunties are trying to support communities in need Dealing with the recent passing of Auntie Sally Super Auntie Constance Parng's breakout case of COVID How Kristina has been able to do more to affect change as an Auntie than an elected official The statement that the Auntie Sewing Squad put out after the Atlanta Spa Shootings The book about the Auntie Sewing Squad that will be coming out this fall (The Auntie Sewing Squad Guide to Mask Making, Radical Care and Racial Justice) The full-length documentary being made about the Auntie Sewing Squad (We Go Down Sewing) How COVID hospitalizations have affected people in need of other medical treatments/procedures The Auntie Sewing Squad retirement party How the Auntie Sewing Squad is nonhierarchical The term mutual aid The unique community and bonds that have formed amongst the Aunties and members of Auntie Sewing Squad What will happen to the group after it retires, and will the community still exist online Kristina's show about the Auntie Sewing Squad which is set to be performed in New York in November Related Links: The Auntie Sewing Squad's website: http://auntiesewingsquad.com/ The Auntie Sewing Squad on Instagram: www.Instagram.com/AuntieSewing Auntie Sewing Squad Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/2764362993676831/ Auntie Sewing Squad Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/auntiesewing The Auntie Sewing Squad's YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCQrlwkZu_l6F1d9D_M5ZnGQ The Auntie Sewing Squad's book, The Auntie Sewing Squad Guide to Mask Making, Radical Care and Racial Justice, 30% off code 17M6662, valid for UC Press website only: https://bit.ly/3iwyEBb The Auntie Sewing Squad's HQ (list of notable Aunties): http://auntiesewingsquad.com/about/what-is-hq/ FEMA: https://www.fema.gov/ World Harvest Food Bank: https://www.worldharvestla.org/ Mutual Aid: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mutual_aid_(organization_theory) Super Auntie Constance Parng's Talking Taiwan interview: https://talkingtaiwan.com/constance-parng-super-auntie-to-native-nations-of-the-auntie-sewing-squad-ep-108/ Atlanta Spa Shootings: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2021_Atlanta_spa_shootings The Auntie Sewing Squad's Statement on Rising Anti-Asian Hate and Violence: http://auntiesewingsquad.com/blog-posts/anti-aapi-hate-statement/ Kristina Wong's website: http://kristinawong.com/ Kristina Wong's Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/ilovekristinawong/ Kristina Wong's YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCYVB9L Valerie Soe's blog: https://beyondasiaphilia.com/ Valerie Soe's Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/Valerie-Soe-1397194727164610 Valerie's previous Talking Taiwan interview about her documentary film, Love Boat Taiwan: https://talkingtaiwan.com/love-boat-taiwan-interview-asian-american-studies-professor-film-maker-valerie-soe-ep-66/ Talking Taiwan Episode 75: Auntie Sewing Squad Combats Covid-19 One Mask at a Time: https://talkingtaiwan.com/auntie-sewing-squad-combats-covid-19-one-mask-at-a-time-ep-75/ Talking Taiwan Episode 107: Auntie Sewing Squad 2: Supporting Communities On the Fringe Through Caring: https://talkingtaiwan.com/auntie-sewing-squad-2-supporting-communities-on-the-fringe-through-caring-ep-107/

She also shares how she had her biggest year ever even in the midst of the pandemic. And she shares why the early career hustle can give way to more measured, focused work and a lot more freedom! Networking in Real Estate: Why It Matters As you can imagine, New York City is the most competitive real estate market in the world. However, Kristina has been able to find tremendous success, particularly because she believes in forming lasting relationships with her clients. Then, when times are slow, she can often drum up new business opportunities just by picking up the phone and checking in with them! Kristina is able to leverage her network and her personal brand to ensure that she doesn’t have to constantly hustle anymore and can instead pick and choose who to work with. And because she has a trusted team, Kristina is able to focus on the work she’s truly passionate about. Networking in real estate and building a strong personal brand can help you get your name out there, creating new opportunities and freeing you from the “always on” grind. 2020 was challenging for SO many entrepreneurs. For service-based business owners working with other people face to face, life turned on its head back in March. It is NOT easy to transform your business. It’s even harder to truly thrive—but today’s guest did just that in the wake of the pandemic. Today, I’m catching up with an old client who became a friend of mine, which actually happens quite a bit—badass business owner, Kristina Semos. You might remember her from my book, Badass Your Brand, where I shared the rebrand we did for her back in 2016. Kristina went from charging hourly and hauling butt around NYC to meet students 7 days a week to selling a lead product that positioned her as an expert and packaged services that she started delivering almost entirely remotely… ONLY 4 days a week! Kristina owns Ivy Lounge Test Prep®, where she helps high schoolers around the globe get into the colleges of their dreams with high-end private tutoring for the SATs, ACTs and college essays. This new model became so profitable that Kristina ended up having extra time to play with. She ended up opening a second business based on her decades-long passion for astrology and turned it into her second business, AstroOils®. Tune into this episode to hear: How Kristina’s business completely stopped with COVID in March of 2020 when they canceled the SATs and ACTs, and what she did instead that tripled her list and landed her some highly coveted speaking gigs in September Kristina’s content creation process and how to land as the top search result on Google Her mindset shift around people who tell her she’s too expensive, and how that shift encouraged her to RAISE her prices in 2021 even though 2020 was a slow year for business AND SO MUCH MORE! Masks have become a polarizing political symbol in our society this year. Opinions on them have changed and developed throughout the entirety of COVID-19, but they are still quite divisive. Depending on our backgrounds, experiences, and personal perspectives, we all view this tiny piece of cloth in a different way. That is why I wanted to have a conversation today with my friend and repeat guest, Kristina Wong. Kristina is the creator of Radical Cram School, a social justice school on YouTube for girls of color. She is also a performance artist and Muslim-elected representative in Koreatown in LA. When the pandemic first hit in America, she began making masks for the homeless and others who were immunocompromised and had no access to masks. This led to countless requests and the eventual creation of the Facebook group, Auntie Sewing Squad. In today’s episode, we talk about both of our experiences with masks during COVID-19, as well as what we are doing to help. If you are interested in learning more about what it has been like to be an Asian American during this time, listen in to the amazing insights and stories Kristina shares. Show Highlights: Our personal experiences with masks and COVID-19 in general. How Kristina got started sewing masks for the less fortunate. An explanation of the term “auntie” in Asian culture. The transformation and current culture of the Auntie Sewing Squad group. How Kristina has valued the women of color in her sewing squad. How I have recruited children to help the vulnerable with my mass sewing camp. How to support the Auntie Sewing Squad. Kristina Botelho had every reason to fail. Between a challenging youth where she was in and out of foster homes, becoming a teenage mother, and the general challenges of starting and running a business, this woman had a lot on her plate in all senses of the word. However, she knew at a young age that her story was one that was going to be big, bold, and thankfully — not normal. Today, she joins the Inner Circle to share her own experience of changing her thought patterns to manifest into tangible success, and why we should all accept nothing less than greatness in ourselves and our experience in the world. She also talks about how plant-based foods changed her life so much that she now has one of the tastiest and thriving plant-based businesses in Edmonton, Kb&co. What You'll Hear in This Episode: Where it all began for Kristina in B.C., where she was raised in a large family that moved a lot and experienced much financial hardship. A very honest and open description of her early relationship with her own mother, her foster homes and how she was pretty much on her own by the 7th grade. The way being in foster care inspired her to be the best mom she could be and show her own children the life she always dreamed of. What partying looked like for her. Not at the typical age, but at the very young age of 11. Why Kristina thinks she didn't follow the “typical” path, and how our past does not define our future. Her experience of becoming a young mother, which resulted in her moving with her husband to Edmonton. How she began her business career and worked up enough nerve to purchase a Quiznos franchise by the age of 20, and what she learned right away from entering this fast-paced new world. How Kristina mixed her own love of a plant-based diet with her entrepreneurial dreams and business sense. More about her own discovery that a plant-based diet worked wonders for clearing her health issues, and why she is so passionate about whole foods. Her meditation and visualization practices, and the real-life ways they have benefitted her. The most popular dishes at Kb&co. Yum! How she changed the story she was telling herself about money to reflect abundance. Quotes: “I was 11 going on 19.” “I wanted to prove to people that I could be somebody, and I could do something with my life.” “I've always been a dreamer, and I've always wanted big things.” “The easy part is giving up, and that option never existed.” “Trust your gut, and stay in your own lane.” “I need to be hands on. The passion that Kristina Montague brings to her role as Managing Partner of The JumpFund is immediately evident in her conversation with Roshawnna. The JumpFund is an investment fund that operates within an interesting and necessary niche: it is by women for women. After recognizing a gap in gender equality within the entrepreneur space, Kristina and her team of partners set out to create a fund that could bring some gender balance to the startup ecosystem. The enormous success that The Jumpfund has played a part in facilitating is evidence of the need that The JumpFund has fulfilled. Within the Trenches is back with episode 29! This episode was recorded at the National NENA Conference and Expo at the Charlotte Convention Center in Charlotte, North Carolina. In this episode I had the pleasure of speaking with Kristina and Shelley of Bartlett PD in Tennessee and Rob of Queensland Police Service located in Brisbane, Australia. In this episode we share first time calls, the importance of knowing your location and the stress that comes with working in the 9-1-1 profession. All of the episodes I recorded while I was here were great but I made a personal bond with this group throughout my stay in North Carolina so it made this episode special. You will also have a lot to take away from this because of the amount of great information on here. As always you can email the show at thejcast@thejabberlog.com.
