Living Your Success with Catherine Bassick

Sometimes living your success means silencing your insecurities and abandoning your comfort zone in order to embrace the opportunities you've always dreamt of pursuing. What you will learn in this episode: What it took for Catherine to become one of the most successful luxury agents on the west coast How she became one of the first people EVER to sell a single property for over a hundred million dollars How she generated over $400,000 in commissions during her very first year as an agent Why she decided to leave her successful business on the west coast to come back to the east coast Catherine's brilliant answer to the question, “How many homes have you sold?” How she uses all of her success to do some good in the world Why Catherine believes that “living your success” starts with being aware of your insecurities Living Your Success When it comes to living your success, no one does it better than my guest on Pursuing Freedom this week, Catherine Bassick. Catherine is a woman who knows the true power of trading in your insecurities for opportunities, and she lives her life around that philosophy. Catherine's incredible career has taken her on a wild ride from coast to coast — literally! From making movies and music in the entertainment industry to becoming one of the highest-level luxury realtors on the west coast, she knows a thing or two about abandoning your fear in order to find success no matter where you go. Don't Be Afraid to Throw Your Own Party When Catherine first made the switch from the entertainment industry to real estate, her “next love,” she quickly realized that not everyone wants to see you succeed when you're a newcomer. Did that stop her from finding success? Of course not! In fact, Catherine used that discomfort to find new ways to connect with her market more authentically — and it worked. In her first year as an agent, she earned over $400,000 in commissions. And she was just getting started. A few years before Catherine became one of the first realtors to ever sell a SINGLE property for over one hundred MILLION dollars (you read that right, ONE PROPERTY!) — the real estate market was, on the surface, at an all-time low. People everywhere were talking about how bad things were, but Catherine decided early on that she “wasn't attending that party, she'd be throwing her own.” That attitude resulted in one of the most successful years of Catherine's entire career. She advises anyone else facing an overwhelming environment or less-than-ideal circumstances to do the same thing she did: throw your own party and change that narrative for yourself. Your Fear Is Never the One in Charge Catherine knows better than just about anyone that sometimes, living your success means silencing your insecurities and abandoning your comfort zone in order to embrace the opportunities you've always dreamt of pursuing. During our conversation, she offered up an important reminder: no matter how successful you are, no matter how long you've been in your business, fear is always going to be a factor when it comes to new opportunities. The good news? Your fear isn't the one calling the shots. You are. When it comes to dealing with her own insecurities, Catherine likes to picture them as a puppy that's being trained. When they start acting up, she firmly commands them to “Sit! Stay! And go lie down!” Whatever analogy works best for you, she says the important thing to remember is that YOU are always the one in control.                                   About Catherine Bassick With 18 years of experience in luxury real estate and backgrounds in tech/entertainment, Catherine has helped clients achieve their ownership goals for over 20 years. Her extensive knowledge of the Greater Boston and MetroWest markets positions her as an expert advisor to those on either side of the real estate market table. She is an Institute of Luxury Home Marketing Million Dollar Guild Level Member, member of the prestigious REALM network with the highest producers in real estate around the world, as well as the Top Agent Network comprising the top 10% of real estate agents in the Boston area. True real estate professionals are adept at navigating the markets, whether trending up or down. Through a commitment to fostering strong relationships with the real estate community, Catherine has her finger on the pulse of properties and their price points, even if they are discrete transactions. Looking for a dose of motivation to break through your own perceived limitations? In this episode, Erik Cabral sits down with Erin Bradley, founder of Pursuing Freedom, a platform dedicated to helping others unlock their potential for success and happiness.  Erin's unconventional journey from waiting tables to building a thriving business and retiring early is proof that you have no idea what you're truly capable of until you start chasing your limitless potential. Tune in to hear Erin share her hard-won lessons on transforming mindset, embracing failure, and living life to the absolute fullest through bold risk-taking and relentless passion for personal growth. Here are some power takeaways from today's conversation: From teaching English abroad to starting her mortgage career How a major financial setback led Erin to hire her first business coach Transforming your relationship with money Strategies for cultivating limitless thinking in yourself and your kids Episode Highlights: [01:57] If Not Now, When? Erin chose to experience the world after college rather than immediately pursuing a "real job". This led her to take a job waiting tables to save money for travels, where she had adventures like kayaking in Mexico and teaching English in Barcelona. This pivot launched her journey of self-discovery, risk-taking, and a philosophy of living by "why not?" and "if not now, when?" that has shaped her success ever since. [12:12] Transform Your Relationship with Money People with a tangible relationship view money emotionally - when they have more money they feel safer and happier, and when savings decrease they feel debilitated. Those with an intangible relationship don't feel as strong of emotions about money and can say things like "I could always make more" or see it as just a means to an end. Erin says understanding where you fall on the spectrum is important, because it impacts how you should set goals. Those more intangible may not feel motivated by income goals alone, while tangible types need goals tied to experiences money can provide. [32:33] From “I Can't” to “How Can I?” Erin discusses an important lesson she teaches her children about changing their language from "I can't" to "How can I?". She explains that saying "I can't" closes the valve to possibilities, while asking "How can I?" opens the valve by shifting to a problem-solving mindset. Erin emphasizes that "can't" is actually a decision that limits ourselves, whereas exploring "How can I?" gets us thinking creatively about solutions instead of roadblocks. This mindset teaching resonates with Erin's overall message of cultivating a growth mindset that believes in limitless potential. While we're managing our businesses, our teams, and everything in between, creating freedom in our own lives often means placing our trust and support in partners who empower us to prioritize. Jenny Wemert talks about how she learned to choose the right partners for her “teamerage” and offers advice on building your business in a way that offers you and your team the freedom to stop trading time for money. What you will learn in this episode: Why Jenny went from a career in teaching to owning her own brokerage How Jenny used her teaching background to build camaraderie and community in her farming networks What a “Teamerage” is and why Jenny refers to her business as one Why Jenny and her partners have made the conscious decision to operate their business as a team — from top to bottom The role that hiring played in helping Jenny scale her business What Jenny did to create freedom in her life while balancing her team, her family, and her personal goals How Jenny continues to build her business in a way that allows her and her team to “stop trading time for money” Stop Trading Time for Money On this episode of the Pursuing Freedom podcast, Jenny Wemert talks about how she learned to choose the right partners for her “teamerage” and offers advice on building your business in a way that offers you and your team the freedom to stop trading time for money. Following Her Servant Heart Right out of college, Jenny became a teacher. Jenny loved teaching and was naturally great at it, but as someone who had always been driven by what she calls a “servant heart,” Jenny soon found that teaching simply wasn't allowing her to live up to her full potential. There was just something missing. Jenny knew she had a gift for creating connections and influencing growth in others, so she decided to find a career that allowed her to put those skills to work. Lucky for her, it took no time at all for her to realize that that career was in real estate. Not only did the real estate business appeal to Jenny's competitive spirit and affinity for fast-paced work, but it also gave her an opportunity to use her servant's heart while building up her business. She started in her own neighborhood, creating connections, building camaraderie, and farming those communities for business leads. When her network started expanding more quickly than she had anticipated, Jenny realized that that success simply couldn't be managed alone. She needed a team. So she hired a few trusted partners, and when her business grew even more, she hired again. Little by little, Jenny scaled her business and grew her brokerage team up to nearly 80 people. “Widening the Umbrella” From the get-go, Jenny and her partners have remained committed to operating the business and the brokerage — the “teamerage,” as they've come to call it — as a team. While the business generates leads for the agents, they continue to work as a collective, sharing in their numbers and in their successes. This “teamerage,” and the culture of partnership they've created together, are what Jenny says she's most proud of. Jenny continues to grow her business using the same philosophy she held when she first got her start. She calls it “widening the umbrella.” Quite simply, whenever her current team reaches a point where they have enough leads to go around and then some, they hire again. Jenny believes that continuing to create more opportunities for others has been the key to sustainably scaling her business while prioritizing her own time and freedom. She also emphasizes that contributing to the success of others hasn't diminished her own in the slightest. In fact, it has empowered her to create a business and a life where she never feels the need to trade her time for money. Moving forward, Jenny is committed to helping everyone she works with achieve the same level of freedom. About Jenny Wemert Jenny Wemert has focused her energy on cultivating and building her team to serve clients and always exceed expectations. Serving 1029 families last year alone, her team is comprised of agents, transaction coordinators, a full marketing department, and support staff. Combining innovative vision and strategic marketing concepts with unmatched dedication to achieve the highest level of results truly does create clients for life. From coaching her first team to growing that team tenfold, Cheri Benjamin has learned that finding success and pursuing freedom for ourselves means pursuing freedom for others as well. What you will learn in this episode: How Cheri started as the first agent at her business and became the owner of that business Why Cheri treats every business relationship as a partnership How Cheri grew her team from 67 to almost 400 members — during the pandemic! The importance of attracting the RIGHT team members — and why Cheri says that in order to scale your business, you have to be able to attract leaders How Cheri learned to “run her business like a business” Why Cheri believes that pursuing freedom for yourself, and for your business, starts with pursuing freedom for others Leading by Leveraging Not only did Cheri successfully turn her team of 67 into a team of nearly 400 people within her first two years, she also managed to achieve this rapid and impressive growth during the height of the pandemic. How? By learning to lead with leverage. In this episode of the Pursuing Freedom podcast, Cheri reminds us all that whether we're working to expand our teams or build up our businesses, leading with leverage is the key to scalable growth. Growing the Team to Grow the Business Cheri was the very first real estate agent that her company, Village Premier Collections, ever hired. She was on a team of about 25 people, and it didn't take long for her to start feeling like that team had started operating like a mini brokerage. When she presented the idea to her owners, they agreed, and in no time at all, Cheri was opening her own physical location, leading her team, and helping it grow from 25 to almost 50 people. A few short months later, the owners of Village Premier Collections decided to sell the business, and Cheri found herself leading the team not as an agent, but as the company's new owner. A leader and a coach at heart, Cheri knew that she wanted to expand the team and scale the business even more, and that she wanted to do so in a way that allowed her to support her team members so that they could continue to grow as well. Scaling Up by Stepping Away When she first started expanding her team, Cheri quickly realized that like so many of us, she was taking on too much. She wanted to scale the business, recruit more people, and dedicate time and resources to coaching and mentoring her current team members. She found that doing everything at once wasn't sustainable, and she knew that she didn't just need to find people to help her, she needed to find the right people. During our conversations, Cheri emphasized that one of the most important lessons she's learned while scaling her business was that in order to do so, she needed to be able to attract leaders. Finding the right people for your team is integral to creating consistency and sustainable growth in your business, especially when you reach a point where you simply can't always be in the room. Once Cheri found her core team of leaders — the handful of people she could leverage to help her delegate tasks, eliminate challenges, and automate aspects of her business where she'd struggled to create consistency — she not only felt empowered to step away, but she was able to do so while her business continued to skyrocket. As her business continues to grow and thrive, Cheri proudly shares that she's truly reached a point where she doesn't need to be everywhere all at once. She has the flexibility to be present when the opportunity presents itself but ultimately, her team makes it possible for her to keep her sights set on scaling the business without having to micromanage. Adopting an “Ubuntu” Mindset Cheri has adopted a leadership mindset that she actively incorporates with her business, her personal life, and even with her own family. It's called “ubuntu” — an African proverb that simply means, “I am because of you.” Cheri says that this mindset has greatly influenced the way she leads her team and her family. She firmly believes that her personal growth and success are directly linked to the support she offers others as they grow. Cheri's approach to leading her team and supporting the people in her life reminds us all that pursuing freedom for ourselves and for our business so often starts with pursuing freedom for others. About Cheri Benjamin Cheri Benjamin, CEO of Village Premier Collection, is a veteran and an African American business leader and mentor who uses real estate to help pursue her passion for helping families build lasting legacies in Metro Atlanta. What role does your personal brand play in the success of your real estate business? Most of us know how important it is to market our services, but if you ask Tracy McLaughlin, she'll tell you that consistently building your business starts with building your brand. What you will learn in this episode: How Tracy built an award-winning real estate career even though her background was in journalism and broadcasting Where Tracy first discovered her passion for branding and design — and how she infuses those passions into her business The role that your personal branding plays in the success of your business How to brand yourself as an expert in your community Ways you can use your brand to offer value, create connection, and foster engagement within your community How to use social media as a tool for monetizing your business Why Tracy believes that real estate is about showing people how to live in homes — not just about selling them Building Your Brand What role does your personal brand play in the success of your real estate business? We all know how important it is to market our services, but if you ask Tracy McLaughlin, our guest for this episode of the Pursuing Freedom podcast, she'll tell you that consistently building your business always come back to how committed you are to building your brand. Marketing = Passion + Expertise Tracy will be the first to tell you that she fell into the real estate game unexpectedly. Her background in journalism led to an exciting career in TV broadcasting — a career that often required her to travel all over the country. Ironically, all of this traveling is what ultimately led her back to her hometown of Marin County. When she and her husband were expecting their first child, she decided it was time to pursue something a little bit closer to home. Tracy and her husband decided to invest in a house down the street from theirs so they could fix it up and increase the market value. That project ended up being the catalyst for Tracy's real estate career. She discovered her passion for design, for navigating the subtleties and nuances that ultimately make or break a person's decision to buy a home. After she'd moved on from that first project to flipping several homes each year, Tracy knew that she could marry this passion of hers with the knowledge she'd accumulated in order to turn it into a career. For her, real estate isn't just about selling people homes, it's about showing people how to live in them. According to Tracy, the same principle applies to building a successful brand. It's the seemingly little things — the fonts you choose, the color and detail of your logo, the specific words you incorporate into your messaging — that ultimately have the power to make or break your personal brand. She says that at the end of the day, if your passion and expertise don't shine through, then your brand isn't doing anything to build up your business. How to Keep Building Your Brand As a top agent in Marin County for a record-breaking 16 straight years, Tracy's proven formula for branding and business success kind of speaks for itself. But, fortunately for all of us, Tracy was still gracious enough to speak to her wealth of industry knowledge and to offer up some sage advice for anyone who is struggling to bolster their business or establish their brand. During our conversation, Tracy emphasized that “brand bleeds through everything.” Not only does your brand represent your business, but when built correctly, it does so in a way that showcases who you are, what you do, and how you do it. From your messaging and design to the way you present your brand in physical spaces or on social media, Tracy stresses the importance of being consistent and remembering that all of these aspects contribute to whether or not your brand will successfully connect you with your audiences. She says that at the end of the day, if your passion and expertise don't shine through, then your brand isn't doing anything to build your business. Tracy offered up several other nuggets of wisdom and advice for anyone who is looking to build their brand or build momentum behind their business: Find Your Passion, and Speak to It — Tracy's secret to building a successful brand isn't really a secret at all. Everyone has backgrounds, experiences, and passions that are unique to them. When you infuse that passion and knowledge into your brand, you ensure that you'll attract the type of work you'll genuinely love, while also fostering connection and engagement with your audiences. Take Risks — at some point in everyone's journey, risk happens before the reward. Discomfort and uncertainty are unavoidable in this industry but when you embrace them, those strategic risks can lead to incredible opportunities. Always Create Value — There's an art to finding your foothold in the communities you work in, but doing so successfully almost always comes down to whether or not you're creating value for the people in it. Not every conversation, appointment, or showing is going to lead to a sale, but that doesn't mean those connections are fruitless. Create value in every interaction by offering up the expertise, insights, and passions that make up your brand. Tracy says that when you do, that investment you make in your business will almost always come back to you tenfold. Real estate is an unpredictable business. But Kaajal Shahani knows that when the market throws our business for a loop, sometimes the best thing we can do is learn to “just roll with it!” What you will learn in this episode: How Kaajal Shahani has mastered the art of creating consistency — even in an unpredictable industry like Real Estate Why she used to say she'd “never get into real estate,” and what changed her mind How Kaajal got a job as a buyer's agent even though she initially had no idea how to be one What happened when Kaajal left her first job in the industry to move back to her hometown in the Bay Area Why having an entire family of real estate professionals is helpful…and also not so helpful How Kaajal reacted when some of the most successful moments in her career were immediately followed by major market crashes Why Kaajal used to balk at the idea of having a daily routine — and why she swears by it now How “joking” about going on a sabbatical resulted in Kaajal taking a MONTH-LONG vacation with her entire family on her 40th birthday Kaajal's advice for anyone looking to create balance in their business and their life Just Roll with It! It's probably safe to assume that no one enters the real estate business because of the consistency it offers. You can have one of the greatest months of your career, only to have it immediately followed by one of the toughest. Kaajal Shahani, our guest on this episode of the Pursuing Freedom podcast, knows this all-too-well. After navigating the ups and downs the market has thrown her way throughout her career, she's learned that sometimes, creating consistency means embracing unpredictability with an attitude of, “just roll with it!” It Started with a “What's Next?” Since she grew up in a real estate family, Kaajal decided to pursue a career in a totally different world: corporate America. But, when the 9-to-5 life started to feel stifling, she found herself asking “what's next?” And that's where her story truly got started. While it was always an option she kept in the back of her mind, Kaajal's transition into the real estate industry happened much faster than she ever would have expected. Once she had her license, she left her 9-to-5 job, walked into a local realtor's office on a whim, and struck up a conversation with a broker. That conversation lead to another one with a different broker who was looking for a buyer's agent. And, even though she didn't know anything about being a buyers agent when she first started, Kaajal not only loved the work, but she also ended up closing 36 sales in her first year alone. Suffice to say, she'd found her fit. Navigating the Ups and Downs Kaajal had an incredible team behind her, a mentor to guide her, and with such a successful chapter under her belt, she decided to move back to the Bay Area to start her own business. Everything was falling into place. And then the market crashed… Getting a business off of the ground is never a walk in the park, but for Kaajal, it meant spending a year and a half door-knocking, cold-calling, and doing open houses every single weekend — many of which ended up being no-shows — before she made her first sale. Finally, right around the time she was starting to wonder what more she could possibly be doing, Kaajal started closing deals. Her determination and tireless efforts were paying off. She'd built up her local network, gained recognition in her area, and was set to keep building off of that momentum she'd been storing up. And then the market crashed…again. Creating Balance Knowing how and when we need to adapt in order to evolve is something Kaajal refers to as the “mastery of the business.” Even though the market continues to ebb and flow just like always, Kaajal's volume has still gone up year over year. She's adamant that the consistent growth would not be possible if it weren't for her routine and the “just roll with it” approach she's learned to take in the face of unpredictability. Kaajal encourages anyone who is navigating uncertainty, whether it's with their business or their personal life, to lean into it. Creating balance often means being willing to embrace change and adapt to challenges without allowing them to limit our success. Harnessing the power of intention through intention setting can help you recognize opportunities, achieve your business goals, and build the life you've always wanted to live. What you will learn in this episode: Why Tami initially avoided real estate work after growing up in that world — and why she ultimately decided to return to her roots How her backgrounds in entertainment and production in LA inspired her to create a new model for success in the real estate industry The differences between the traditional real estate model and the “Production” model Tami has implemented for her business How Tami intentionally built her team of agents and brokers before real estate teams were really a thing Why she believes one of the best ways to offer value to others is to be an active listener and learner Ways agents and brokers tend to “get in their own way” – and how they can stop sabotaging their own success Why Tami likes to remind her clients that “she's the captain of the ship, but they OWN the ship” The importance of implementing boundaries for yourself, and for your business How Tami leads her own team with boundaries, intention-setting, and a commitment to finding joy and “play” in their work The incredible ways that Tami's personal and professional life have changed as a result of her intention setting How Tami is helping people from all over the world set intentions, find hope, and discover purpose for their lives through Life Change Warriors The Power of Intention From changing her business to changing her life, Tami Pardee knows firsthand that the key to realizing our potential lies in the power of intention setting. Throughout our awesome conversation on this week's episode of the Pursuing Freedom podcast, Tami offers up several examples of how the power of intention has shaped her own life — from changing how she works, leads her team, and influences her industry to the ways she is helping to change the lives of people all over the world through Life Change Warriors. Changing Our Work Tami has been in the real estate world her entire life. After growing up with parents who were builders and designers, she intentionally made the decision to avoid real estate work —and the entire industry, really — in her early career. That pivot led her to LA, and to an exciting career in entertainment and production. But, as fate would have it, even while working in an industry so vastly different from the one she'd grown up in, Tami couldn't help but find herself being drawn back to real estate. When she ultimately decided to return to her roots, she was determined to do so in a way that not only changed the way she worked but changed the entire landscape of the industry. Tami felt that the traditional real estate model was “broken.” And, since her experience was in production, she used it to shake up the industry in order to do things differently on purpose. Spoiler alert: it worked. Spectacularly. The “Production Model” that Tami implemented for her team not only proved highly successful for her business and her clients, but it allowed her to cultivate a genuine team dynamic long before real estate teams were ever a thing. Now, that team has become a family, and that production model has reshaped the entire real estate climate in the greater LA market. Changing Our Lives As if her success with her business wasn't enough to reinforce Tami's belief in the power of intention (not to mention ours!) she also shared several ways that intention setting has impacted her own life. From discovering, defining, and defending her personal boundaries, to helping her build the life she always dreamed of living, for Tami, the common denominator has always been her faithfulness in setting intentions for her life, her leadership style, and her vision for her future. By following through on those intentions, Tami has not only created a life she loves, but through her incredible work with Life Change Warriors, she has also created opportunities for people all over the world to change their lives as well. Her advice to anyone looking to embrace change in their own life? Just start. It is never too late to put your dreams into action, and it is NEVER too early to start building a life you don't need a vacation from. #180 Three Simple Strategies for Thriving in Times of Challenge, with Erin Bradley

Pursuing Freedom

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 18, 2022 16:38

This week, we discuss the three specific strategies that you can start implementing immediately to transform your mindset, boost your energy, and thrive despite external factors. What you will learn in this episode: Three simple strategies to elevate your business right now How to start your morning the bright way Why you need to make self-care a priority How to create the space and energy to pursue new and exciting opportunities Opportunities that your clients can take advantage of right now by leveraging the equity in their home Why you need to double down on engaging with your community Reframing your mindset to create value for your database Positive Energy = Business Growth It doesn't matter what time you start your day. It matters HOW you start your day, which is why I tell people to start their day bright. Avoid checking your emails before your feet have even hit the ground. Don't allow your light to be dimmed by external circumstances the moment your eyes open in the morning. There is no doubt that we're facing unprecedented times, but you've got to put your oxygen mask on first and look after yourself before you can look after the others in your life. Focus your energy on the positives, because doing so enables you to create and expand opportunities. Give yourself space for creativity, time for new ideas, and then engage with your world as the best version of yourself. This process creates a vibration of positivity that will improve your business – and your life. Reframe Your Thinking It is critical right now to focus on opportunities over obstacles. There are many types of sellers out there. To stand out, you need to reframe your thinking and remind yourself of the importance of adding value to people's lives. For instance, some people may not want to sell right now because they are unaware of the opportunities that exist with their home equity. Having a conversation with them about leveraging their home equity to create new sources of income for their families could elevate their lives and their wealth. And you might just spark a daydream that can become a reality. Using this opportunity to educate, rather than seeing unwilling sellers as an obstacle, not only adds value to their lives but may also lead to new business for you. Get Excited About the Possibilities When you're sharing your enthusiasm and excitement about all the possibilities open to your community, you can create a vibration that ripples out. Get out there and engage with people, connect with your community, and share the spark you're nurturing about the wealth of opportunities that people can take advantage of right now.
