Smart Girl Summer continues again this week, and I'm so excited to be joined again by my closest friend, author, speaker, and leadership coach, Jo Saxton. When Jo is on the show, you know it will be excellent and full of genuine honesty and fun! Jo has dedicated her career to growing leadership teams worldwide and empowering women to find their purpose in their personal lives and in leadership. She is continuing this mission by making sure they have access to training and opportunities that women need. In this episode, we talk about what to do when you feel called by God to do one thing while you are doing something else, finding the threads that God shows us, as well as the idea of who you want to be on the other side of the crisis. Jo and I also discuss the kryptonite for women who are following their calling, trying to find abundance in a scarce place, and Jo's upcoming event this fall. (She even shares a discount code!) Listen in as we also discuss: How Jo got started, where she is now, and where she is headed The way to ensure experiments are successful (and it's not by whether they actually succeed or not!) The mindset needed during transitions so that we can become more creative and more self-aware What God expects from us as we face a challenge (and what He does for us every day) Favorite quotes: 1. I think these threads are like cross-stitch or a tapestry, the front that others may see seem logical. The back, the actual journey, is a hot mess of threads that are entangled and weaving in and out. 2. Just because it's uncertain doesn't necessarily mean it's bad. It doesn't mean it's all falling apart. And even if it is all falling apart, it doesn't mean it's over. It means I've got to be curious about it, rather than give up and walk away.3. Transition isn't just an aberration and an evil thing. It can be hard for sure, but transition is an opportunity to be creative. This is an opportunity to become more self aware and aware of what God is saying to me. This is an opportunity to dust off some things. 4. Arriving at the end of transition isn't the point, it's how you transition that matters. 5. I think we forget what it is to learn. And we forget that learning is integral to our gifting, and our calling. Great things we discussed: 1. Jo Saxton 2. Ezer Collective 3. Elemis 4. Black Widow 5. Sweet Ever After 6. Dashing Diva 7. Standing Strong Hope you loved this episode! Be sure to subscribe to iTunes and slap some stars on a review! :) xo, Alli

How the mind constantly seeks evidence to confirm what we believe to be true and will do anything it can to find that evidenceJo's belief that confidence is an emotion, and therefore can be created through her thoughtsThe power our internal language has on our confidence, and therefore how important it is to consciously choose words that strengthen our confidenceThe difference between blaming ourselves, and taking personal responsibility for what we do and what we thinkConfidence in self-being our natural state until our ego starts to develop and impact how we see ourselvesHow Jo's work is supporting clients across the globe to wake up and live on purposeA vibrant, fun, lively conversation with plenty of outstanding content. Jo's energy is infectious and refreshing, she brings a unique balance of understanding and compassion with an open and direct approach. www.FruciFit.comWhat happened to Jo (1 year later)So I caught up with the amazing Jo Waltham this week. Jo has been on our Fit For Life Programme for nearly a year, losing 2 stone without it 'feeling like I have had to change anything"... Here's what we discussed: ✅ One simple swap that helped Jo curb her hunger ✅ The simple 'not so secret' to overcoming fears of public speaking and trying new things ✅ The surprising piece of advice Jo received that inspired her to do what she is doing in this General Election (it is also the secret to how she lost 2 stone) ✅ How Jo now views exercise (which helps with her motivation and consistency) Plus, much, much more... Check it out here: But I get that a year can seem like a long time away and that can be demotivating ... although I guess if it fits your lifestyle and doesn’t feel like you are changing much then who cares? But anyway, I thought I'd share a few messages from Simone and Liz who've just finished their 4 week Kickstarts: Liz:“ I would highly recommend anyone 'umming and aahing' about joining Matt's group to definitely do it! Matt and Julie are highly motivated and really help to get you going but in a gently way with daily encouragement and in the classes. The app is great and you find all the nutritional information you need. Thank you Matt and Julie for getting me started!”Simone:“Just completed the 4 week kick start and I was so surprised and pleased to find that it really does work. It’s not just the classes, or the nutritional info he gives but he genuinely changes the way you think about these and your relationship with food. It’s been a real eye opener for me and my habits have changed and my mojo has been found! Thanks Matt “And sure, it might not be for everyone... This is a true transformation, based on habits rather than quick fixes Just like Jo said

We have so many great discussions during this episode, from our shared value of integrity, how how exhausting it is pretending to be an extravert because we think we should be and expanding your comfort zone while staying true to who you are. We talk about the concept of heart-song work and how Jo found hers, and her brilliant advice for anyone searching for work that makes their heart sing. What happened to Jo (1 year later)So I caught up with the amazing Jo Waltham this week. Jo has been on our Fit For Life Programme for nearly a year, losing 2 stone without it 'feeling like I have had to change anything"...Here's what we discussed:✅ One simple swap that helped Jo curb her hunger✅ The simple 'not so secret' to overcoming fears of public speaking and trying new things✅ The surprising piece of advice Jo received that inspired her to do what she is doing in this General Election (it is also the secret to how she lost 2 stone)✅ How Jo now views exercise (which helps with her motivation and consistency)Plus, much, much more...Check it out here:But I get that a year can seem like a long time away and that can be demotivating ... although I guess if it fits your lifestyle and doesn’t feel like you are changing much then who cares? But anyway, I thought I'd share a few messages from Simone and Liz who've just finished their 4 week Kickstarts:Liz:“ I would highly recommend anyone 'umming and aahing' about joining Matt's group to definitely do it! This is a true transformation, based on habits rather than quick fixes Just like Jo said.. And if you want to kickstart your habits and results like Jo and co (nice ring to that)?Just send over a message to matt@frucifit.com with "Marlborough", "Devizes" or "Burbage' and I'll get you the details. And show you how you can train in December for FREE...This is available until SaturdaySpecifically, for ladies over 40 that want to kickstart their habitsBut are thinking of leaving it until JanuaryMattwww.FruciFit.com
Jo in her own words… My job title is now an Outdoor Instructor and Expedition Leader and since going self-employed I have led 30 expeditions on Kilimanjaro along with numerous other expeditions on foot, 2 wheels and horseback, most at high altitude, all around the world with both charity and private clients. In the UK I teach and assess the expedition element of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award from Bronze through to Gold as well as leading many a challenge on bike and foot in the UK and Europe. I also help to deliver corporate team building events and expedition training weekends as well as public speaking about my experiences before I discovered the outdoors, Everest, the earthquake and beyond to corporates, schools and groups. To be honest I never thought I would summit Snowdon even once so becoming the 3rd British woman to reach the true summit of Manaslu, the world’s 8th highest mountain standing at 8163m in September 2013 and then being the 36th British woman to reach the summit of Everest in May 2016 have been huge and unexpected achievements. I have gone from having severe vertigo and a great ability to say no way too often to facing my fears, saying yes more and turning my life around. I am now on route to complete the 7 summits and continue to raise funds and awareness for children’s mental health charity Place2Be. *Please note during this episode we do talk about grief and mental health. Ever wondered how some people just nail it on social media or their facebook ad just speaks to you? Want to know how to write super engaging copy for your website or social media? In my latest podcast I interview copywriter Jo Watson who describes herself as an editor and 'writer of stuff'. She explains how to show your personality in your writing and why you need to make people really feel something when you write. Even if they disagree with you. Jo is well-known on LinkedIn for her slightly sweary 'tell it like it is' approach and her personality is well reflected in her writing. She has a truly distinctive writing voice and explains how to create personality in your writing and how if you produce great content then people won't forget about you (even if you go on holiday for a week!) Jo also explains how you can show your authority and views even if you don't feel confident enough to actually post on social media. Jo doesn't have a social media strategy - and believes very much in showing up and being present, being yourself and explaining it as you would to a friend at the pub. Jo also talks about how to go about hiring a copywriter that really is a copywriter (and not just your VA that can do it) and why it's really important to look at the return on investment that it will bring to your business. I'd love to know what you think. I hope you enjoy the episode. {Click on the player above to listen to the podcast episode and/or read on for a detailed overview. On International Nurses Day, please listen to Jo Stewart, the Clinical Nurse Unit Manager at the ICU in which I work - Frankston Hospital. On May 12th, the date that commemorates the birthdate of Florence Nightingale, we celebrate every single one of the many nurses who support and care for us when we are sick. Pretty much everyone on earth comes in contact with a nurse and, for us in intensive care, nurses are so important to all that we do. Let me simply say thank you to the nurses of the world. You are the lifeblood of healthcare, and especially in hospitals. I have learnt from watching hundreds of you; about how to better care for a patient, about how to better communicate, and how to better support a critically unwell person and their loved ones. If you read the cards that are sent to the ICUs when the patients and their families want to say thank you, you’ll see who they value the most. Our nurses are simply amazing. On this episode I speak with Jo Stewart. Her role as Clinical Nurse Unit Manager allows her to offer training and support to the nurses of Frankston ICU as well as to work on quality and operational requirements of the unit. Jo is passionate about education and supporting novice nurses and brings experience from a variety of specialty ICU nursing areas such as Cardiothoracics (including ECMO), Neurosurgery, and Critical Care Liaison Nursing. Jo completed her Masters in Intensive Care Nursing at The Alfred Hospital in 2007, worked in Vancouver, and then commenced working at Frankston Hospital as a Clinical Support and Development Nurse in ICU in 2011 whilst concurrently lecturing at Monash University for both Undergraduate and Post Graduate Nursing courses. In the episode Jo speaks about: How she got into ICU nursing and what she enjoys about it Attracting and retaining ICU nurses The various roles she has worked in throughout her career Educating nurses How Jo educates herself Leading as a nurse unit manager Creating the right culture as a leader How she allocates her own time to different tasks Interactions between doctors and nurses in the ICU Principles of good communication Her self-care practices Encouraging wellness for the nursing workforce Working better as a team Some tips for the ICU doctors Jo is extraordinarily passionate and enthusiastic about her role. She is very welcoming, always happy for a chat, and I thought she would make an excellent guest for the show. Please enjoy listening to Jo Stewart. In this episode we hear: * How Jo was introduced to yoga * What is the definition of trauma-informed yoga? * Why is trauma-informed yoga important? * Are themes appropriate for a yoga class? * How might be an appropriate and non-coercive way to introduce the theme of gratitude into a class? * What is the effect of spinal health upon mental health? * The importance of using language mindfully during a class * How do we create safer spaces for teachers? * Jo's work teaching in the community sector * Jo talks about the project she co-founded - State of Being * Jo's talks about her 3 main Self Care practices. * How Jo became aware that her regime of self-care practices was actually enabling her to maintain an unhealthy workload, and her insights around the strength to say no to things. * How walking away from something can take strength * What can yoga teachers do to help prevent burn-out? * How do we incorporate inclusivity and authenticity into our yoga classes and social media? * How do we ensure studios follow through on the promises of trauma-informed, queer-friendly and body positivity? In this episode we talk about:How and Why Jo co-created the Conscious Cleanse (hint: it involves a radical turn of events due to a major car accident). In the inspiring story of how Jo was able to challenge the medical paradigm to overcome a diagnosis of long-term disability and the role that yoga and nutritional therapy played in her recover.“You can Heal”Why diets didn’t work for Jo and what she learned from trying one after the next and why weight loss was not the primary answer to her recovery (hint: inflammation played a primary role).Love your body. Food is not the enemy, food can be medicine. Why it’s more important to focus on what you can do rather than what you can’t do when working to improve your health. How Jo reduced her pain from 9/10 to 5/10 in two weeks by shifting how she eats. The importance of Wisdom and the power of the mind in the healing process.“Everytime I found someone that said, “I believe you can heal,” I said, “You’re on my team.”How the Conscious Cleanse was designed with a universal message to apply to different people with different body types, lifestyles, and dietary preferences.“Vegetable are the center of your universe” - “Dark Leafy Greens are an inflammation powerhouse, the more dark leafy greens you get the better you’ll feel.”Fresh local foods taste better. The Conscious cleanse isn’t really a cleanse, it’s about getting back to basics and eating a healthy whole foods diet. It’s important to feel empowered to choose what you eat - that’s how this is different from a diet, you can choose what and how you eat. It’s important to be in community and have support when we’re shifting our lifestyle or diet and working to create new habits and positive behaviors - this is built into the Conscious Cleanse in a really great way.We discuss the Chinese medical concept of digestion and how that informs when and when not to eat raw or cooked foods. Jo Chun Yan, currently resides in Japan, is of Korean decent but still calls Melbourne. She's into yoga, reiki, Joni Mitchell and mindfulness (which was definitely a bonus for me), but what struck me with Jo is the way in which she approaches graphic design with her clients. You see Jo isn't your average designer, she is also an intuition coach and works with design clients based on following both her intuition and theirs. In this episode we discuss: *How Jo weaves design and intuition into the perfect offering. *How to follow your intuition. *Why everybody is innately creative. *How to express yourself through your business and branding. *Why sometimes following a morning routine keeps you stuck. *And much more. Our Podcast Diva for episode 11 is Jo Milmine. Jo went from being a military officer in the Royal Air force to becoming an award winning podcaster. Since August 2012 Jo has hosted the Shiny Bees podcast, a show about knitting and yarn mixed with snippets of Jo’s life sprinkled with comedy. “Don’t mess with the knitters!” The Shiny bees podcast won the award for the Most Engaged Audience at the UK Podcasters’ Awards of 2015. The main criteria for this award is community engagement, so it’s great to get a chance to find out from Jo how to build and engage a podcast community and how she keeps them coming back for more. And you don’t need to know about knitting to pick up some useful hints and tips from Jo. I know very little about knitting - as will become apparent in this episode – and it gave me a fascinating insight into a whole new world. Who knew there was such a thing as a knit along! “There’s something from audio podcasts that you don’t get from video – it feels like a more intimate medium because you can’t see the person, so you’re engaging your imagination as to what they look like… It’s like reading a book versus watching a film." In episode 11 of Podcast Divas you find out about: How Jo went from life as a military officer in the Royal Air force to podcasting Where the name Shiny Bees came from The challenges of podcasting in rural South Africa How talking to fighter pilots and other military skills come in handy for podcasting Educating, enabling and entertaining your audience Which came first – the podcast or the business Why Jo was a wantrepreneur for a while Wine tasting for yarns The power of a niche podcast Building a business off the back of a podcast Building a community around your podcast Why podcasts are perfect for knitters How to engage with your audience Getting to know your audience in person Why it’s good to be a bit of a geek How to use meet-ups to grow your community Three ways to monetise your podcast How to turn listeners to members and keep them there Jo’s plans for future monetisation Knitting while you podcast "For people to love things the way you love them, and to hang around with those people, it’s something really special.” Microphones Started with a Samsung Meteor Now uses a Yeti Wants a Heil-PR40 “Our internet was beamed from on top of a mountain…to a little aerial on our house" Links mentioned in episode 11 Ravelry – a social media site for knitters (5 and a half million of them!) Patreon – crowd funding site for donations for podcasters “Caring for people and having time for them is the key to engagement.” An episode of the Shiny Bees podcast If you want to listen to an episode of Jo’s show, Jo suggests episode 55 about Susan Crawford’s 4-year heritage knitting project. This is a fascinating inspiring story of social history, fashion, design, ethnography and Shetland archives. “I think ‘If I was them what would I want?'” Other Podcast Divas to listen to Martine Ellis at I Make podcast Louise Scollay at Knit British “If they’re sitting, they’re knitting.” Where to find Jo Shiny Bees - Website The Golden Skein – Jo’s membership site for high quality, limited edition yarns from around the world.
