Call it “brain fog,” call it “attention economy burnout,” call it the dregs of late capitalism: however you label it, Tamara Lindeman has been feeling it. With “Neon Signs,” our favorite song from her 2025 album as The Weather Station, Humanhood—out now on Fat Possum Records—she gives names and shapes to the sense of dread so many of us feel permeating our daily existence.  “I've gotten used to feeling like I'm crazy—or just lazy,” she sings in her signature flinty voice at the start of the song, articulating the ennui of being stuck in a cosmic rut. Unending conflict, climate anxiety, and the always-on buzz of the internet—all of it has rendered so many of us inert. But the pulsing piano, swirling flutes and strings, and insistent beat do powerful work here, adding forward motion to Lindeman's existential angst. A protest song of a stripe, “Neon Signs” feels like a spiritual update of The Who's “We Don't Get Fooled Again”—a cautionary tale wrapped up in defiance. Untangling the politics of want and need, of trust and fear, of lust and genuine connection, Lindeman wanders a glittering landscape in which every flashing light demands notice and every notification could single doom. Is cutting through all that noise possible? “Neon Signs” doesn't make it clear, but Lindeman tips her hand in favor of the possibility of human flourishing in spite of it all—if only we can get honest with ourselves: “I swear to god I saw real love once/But nothing needs you so badly as a lie, so lonely, drifting, unmoored from real life/if nobody believes it all it can do is die.” This week on Transmissions, she joins host Jason Woodbury to discuss Humanhood—the album, sure, but also the concept of what makes us human. We're so pleased to share this talk with you.

Another year, another month, another pod. Welcome to Episode 54 of This is Not Happening (TINH), an Album of the Month (AOTM) Podcast. In Part 1 we deep dive into an Album that one of us has chosen and in Part 2 we play 'Spin it or Bin it'.  We pick a theme and each pick a song that represents that theme. We judge the selections by asking the question 'Spin It or Bin It'?In Part 1, Joey hosts a bit of a love-in on The Weather Station's 7th album Humanhood. In Part 2, Spin It or Bin It, our theme this month is 'New Music', tracks from the past 2-3 months.                    ----- Part 1 | The Weather Station | Humanhood -----One of the rare times that we've double dipped on artist, we return to Tamara Linderman and The Weather Station. In 2021 we all (eventually) loved Ignorance. An album focusing largely on nature and the climate crisis. It was an album of global concerns. Humanhood is feels quite different, it feels deeply personal but retains global relevance in different ways.I think this is going to be a big one for the pod this year. I know Joey and David will love this album but not so sure about Nolan and Guy. We discuss the album in comparison to Ignorance, we talk about production and sound mixing, percussion backing vocals and lovely lovely woodwind.Listen to the album here.Listen to the essential Sheroes podcast interview with Tamara here.Watch a few videos here.Buy some stuff here.                                               ----- Part 2 | Spin It or Bin It | New Music -----January / February is usually a great time for new tracks. This year is no exception. Let's celebrate that. We each pick a new track and ask each other 'Spin It or Bin It?'Guy chose Orlando In Love by Japanese Breakfast.Joey chose Ocean Steppin' by John Glacier and Sampha.David chose One Foot by Greentea Peng.Nolan chose Lalala by Redman and Method Man.Here is a link to a long list of new tracks that we put together. Tamara Lindeman makes music as The Weather Station and she is my guest on this episode of That's How I Remember It. Tamara just released a fantastic record called Humanhood, which comes follows 2021's breakthrough Ignorance and its 2022 companion How Is It That I Should Look at the Stars. We talked about the making of Humanhood, climate grief, trusting musicians, winds vs. synths, and making music so you can go on tour. I thought this was a really great conversation, and I'm excited to be able to share it here. Listen and subscribe!

The Canadian singer-songwriter Tamara Lindeman, a.k.a. The Weather Station, is known for making music that confronts climate change and the damage we've inflicted on our planet. Just a few days ago, Tamara released her new album, “Humanhood,” which chronicles a difficult mental health period in her life when she felt like she had lost her sense of self. She sits down with Tom Power to discuss the record and why she turns to music to make it through tough times.

You know how every now and then, an album comes along that just gets into your bones, and it's hard to describe just how grateful you are it exists? (If you don't know that feeling, I'm sorry, but keep searching for it). Tamara Lindeman working as The Weather Station has make two such records I feel that way about; 2019's “Ignorance” and 2025's “Humanhood”, released on January 17th. “Humanhood” is a brave, striking and beautiful piece of work that just keeps on giving back, the more you mine it. It's not designed for casual listening; the level of nuance involved, the little interludes between songs, and it's lyrical themes of self-identity in crisis, set against grander concerns about the environment and the post-truth era we find ourselves in, deserve your full attention. It's the sort of album where a different moment or detail might hit your each time you go back to it. It can't imagine it being topped this year. Our conversation takes in everything from depersonalisation disorder and OCD, to taking photos of the sky, unrealistic roles for teenagers and in movies, Canadian rock-band Our Lady Peace, and quietly making the greatest album of 2025. Let me know what you think on Instagram @sendingsignalspodcast

What do you do when you reach a crossroads in your life and have to make some major decision? How do you know you are making the right decision? How can you expand or challenge your frame of reference? How can you get a better connection with your body and why would you want to do that? These are some of the questions we dive deep into, in the conversation I had with 2 amazing artists, that hold the vision to create a worldwide movement for the expansion of human consciousness, and that led them to create, in 2016, the HUMANHOOD dance company.Julia Robert and Rudi Cole, are amazing dancers, that are merging modern physics & ancient mysticism, with Movement and Dance,  to create immersive productions, and experiences that transform and help us connect with our energetic essence and expressive power. With them, we talk about their journey, their decision-making experience when choosing their career, the crossroads they encountered, and how they navigated through them. How they both chose dancing, which was a step into the unknown because in dance it was about expressiveness, it was about being, and about art.We also talked about:How do you know at a cross road that you are making the right choice?About Trusting and Intuition.Daily exercises to create a better connection with your body. Why is it important to foster and cultivate this connection, that will surpass the knowledge of your logical mind.We talk about the fear of our own power, and how to overcome that. The wisdom that your body holds and how to access it.They share another way to view limitations. The power and importance of curiosity to invite new things into your awareness that your ego is not telling you. They share one challenge that really was a learning lesson for them, and made them face the unknown in a way they had never felt before. We finish talking about what they are currently working to improve inside themselves. So many gems in this conversation, all the way to the end!Thank you so much for sharing your LOVE for the Podcast by sharing it with Friends, Subscribing, Rating & Leaving a Review. Welcome to the 2nd TWV in conversation with... episode. today with Júlia Robert and Rudi Cole… both together: Humanhood. This is definitely the most contrasting episode yetwhy??Because of this episode, I've realised that Humanhood and Towards Vivencia have a lot in common in terms of their goals...

The way that we talk about living beings can raise or lower their perceived value. On this episode of the New Books Network, Dr. Lee Pierce (s/t) interviews Dr. Allison L. Rowland (s) about zoetropes and zoerhetorics or ways of talking about living beings that promote (#blacklivesmatter) or demote (“collateral damage”) lives and groups of lives. Zoetropes and the Politics of Humanhood (Ohio State University Press, 2020)looks at a variety of these zoerhetorics and the zoetropes or rhetorical devices those discourses contain, and how they build on the necropolitical concept that we are constantly parsing populations into worthy lives, subhuman lives, and lives sentenced to death. Through a series of case studies, including microbial life (at the American Gut Project), fetal life (at the National Memorial for the Unborn), and vital human life (at two of the nation’s premier fitness centers)—and in conversation with cutting-edge theories of race, gender, sexuality, and disability—this book brings to light the discursive practices that set the terms for inclusion into humanhood and make us who we are. E37: Risk Assessment and the Rhetoric of Epidemics (w/ Dr. Ryan Mitchell)

re:verb

Play Episode Listen Later May 22, 2020 53:53

On today's show, Calvin and Ben speak to our friend, colleague, and former re:verb producer Dr. Ryan Mitchell. Recently, Ryan defended his dissertation, a rhetorical history of the early years of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, and he will join Lafayette College as an Assistant Professor in the fall. Ryan's dissertation traces the rhetorical strategies employed by urban gay men in the early 1980s to push back against totalizing, dehumanizing discourses of HIV/AIDS prevention. According to Ryan's analysis of texts like Callen and Berkowitz's 1983 manual How to Have Sex in an Epidemic: One Approach, the success of these texts' rhetorical strategies depended heavily on their viscerality -- their illumination of subjects' lived, bodily experiences of porousness and permeability -- to both illustrate and justify various intersubjectively-oriented safe sex protocols. Ultimately, Ryan argues, texts like Callen and Berkowitz's served to protect urban gay men from the worst ravages of the disease while also, crucially, affirming their communal identities and agency. After talking through the major rhetorical concepts Ryan employs in his work, we shift into a discussion of how this all might relate to current discourses surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic. As Ryan wisely reminds us, no two disease crises are identical, and there are many mismatches between the early years of HIV/AIDS and where we are currently. Even still, as we discuss, the rhetorics that Ryan has studied emphasize the visceral embodied experiences of those most victimized by public health crises while also promoting social practices, norms, and policies to foster intersubjective ethics of care -- all of which may be worthy of consideration as we navigate the social and political upheaval of our present moment.Works Referenced in this EpisodeCazdyn, E. Kennedy Muntanga is a movement artist born in Ndola, Zambia where he resided until he was 7. Moving to Leeds (UK), Kennedy’s passion for movement came from his wholesome relationship between dance and culture. Kennedy furthered his training and graduated in Ballet and Contemporary Dance at the Rambert School in July 2019. He is now a dancer with Akram Khan Company and has also worked for companies and choreographers such as Phoenix Dance Theatre, Humanhood, Robert Cohan, Michael Keegan-Dolan, Alesandra Seutin & Raman Schlemmer. Two years ago he founded his own company, Kennedy Muntanga Dance Theater (KMDT) and continues to create, perform, and work with the connections between the stories he grew up with, personal narrative, and deep movement exploration. Check out his work here, on instagram. In this conversation, we discuss the intersection between his cultural heritage and dance, how narratives bring empathy to art, why he feels like he is still at the very beginning of creating his voice in dance, what it means to be a dancer, especially during this time of global crisis when no one can perform or teach in person, and how his christian faith deeply influences and drives his work.~SHOW NOTES-Kennedy’s company instagram and his personal account (where you can find info on his quarantine virtual classes)-Trailers & clips from his company’s performances Nebuchadnezzar and Genesis-CAPA College-Rambert School of Ballet and Contemporary Dance-Akram Khan Company -William Forsythe -Michael Keegan-Dolan -Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, Max Richter Arrangement-Kanye West (of course)THANK YOU FOR LISTENINGSubscribe & leave a review on iTunesHave any questions, comments or guest recommendations?
