Intro: There are so many "How to" books on the market such as how to be a good parent, how to have a good job, how to have a good marriage, and many more. We probably have more self help books published more than ever before and yet, in general, things are getting worse. It seems to me that the Bible has much to say about having a full life. I would love to suggest that if we ignore what the Bible says, we settle for cheap and temporary substitutes. A blind man discovered how to live a full life in John 9. As you know, this man was blind from birth. Jesus met him and restored the blindman's sight. This resulted in the Pharisees become infuriated because only God can heal... In this passage, Jesus plainly illustrates to the Pharisees that He is God in the flesh. He does this through the use of 2 illustrations; the gate and the good shepherd. In this encounter, Jesus reveals the simple and precious truth of the gospel. As He speaks, He also reveals the pride and nearsightedness of the Pharisees. True Shepherd vs. a False ShepherdJesus makes these statements and affirms them as absolute truth e.g. "Very truly..."A true shepherd enters the sheep pen by the gateThe sheep knows the voice of their true shepherdThey will follow the shepherd who calls themThey know each sheep by name e.g. there is a relationshipA false shepherd climbs in the pen in some other wayThey are not there to protect, nurture, or care for the sheepSheep will run from false shepherds because they do not know their voiceThey have no relationship with the sheep and they don't care for their welfareThey are there to steal and destroyThey are only interested in their own interests and greedThe Pharisees still didn't understandTrue shepherds protect, feed, and care for the sheep at the peril of the shepherd's own lifePharisees, false shepherds, lay unnecessary burdens of the people which only benefit the Pharisee and destroys the peopleJesus, the Only Way to a Full Life and FreedomJesus makes a very forceful statement which infuriates the Pharisees, "I am the gate for the sheep".Jesus makes this affirmation twiceWhen something is repeated, it is very importantHe says this statement is the absolute truthJesus, being fully God and fully man and our Great High Priest, is the only way to be saved e.g. reconciled to God, forgiven, free, and living a full lifeHe laid down His life for His sheep so that they might enter into eternal life by faith and repentanceAny other shepherd only brings destruction and death, not life and freedomJesus gives an open invitation to enter eternal life and forgiveness through the gate which is HimselfIn Christ, there is salvationIn Christ, there is the protection of the ShepherdHe will leads He will feed usHe will care for usHe protects us from the predator, SatinHe broke the power of sin and deathHe will discipline us to restore usOnce we enter through Him by faith and repentance, we have real freedom to lovingly obey the Shephard and live a full lifeClosing: You and I need to remember and meditate on these great "I Am" statements that Jesus made. It was the miracle of the incarnation that sent to us the Gate to eternal life and the freedom to live a full life. It was the miracle birth of Christ who sent into this sin sick world the Great Shepherd of our souls. The birth, life, death, and resurrection of Christ makes possible for everyone who repents and believes in the person and work of Jesus Christ to be forgiven and life a full life. As believers, there is something which is able to distract us from living freely for Christ. Unconfessed sin can break our fellowship with Jesus and thus distract us from living a full life in Christ. And so, we come to the Lord's Table. This is a sacred time during which we can have close communion with God through Jesus Christ. This is a time for reflection and asking Jesus to reveal unconfessed sin in our hearts. He can reveal this through His Word and the Holy Spirit. When that specific sin or sins are revealed, then we need to humbly ask God to help us turn from that sin because it hurts Him and others and ourselves. The Bible tells us that when we confess our sin, He is faithful and just to forgive us and cleans us from all unrighteousness (1John 1:9).
Intro: There are many misconceptions about the nature of ministry in the culture and in the church. For instance, some people believe that a pastor a just opens up the Bible on Sunday and gives a message. Let me ask a question, how many hours of preparation does it take for a pastor to prepare a message? Another misconception is that the pastor is the professional and is paid to do all the ministry. Because of this misconception, the rate of pastoral burnout and dropout remains alarmingly high. There is another serious misconception in the modern evangelical church in America. Somehow we think that when a Christ follower enters in a ministry, it will be without challenges. The result of this misconception is, again, disappointment, disillusionment, burnout, and dropout. So, this morning, I want to ask are we ready for the challenges of ministry? In this passage today, Dr. Like give us realistic insights into some of the challenges of ministry as faced by the Apostle Paul. Can This Change of Heart Be Real? v.19-22; 26-28People who know us know what we were like before we trusted ChristSome people may be suspicious if this change is realSome other Christ followers might be suspiciousSelf-righteous people will be suspiciousGod will send affirmations of a new heart, new life, and new purposeBarnabas, the encourager, vouched for PaulGod will send encouragers into our lives as we are faithful and obedient to His callingThe Gospel is a Threat to Pride, Power, and Position v. 23-25; v.29The Gospel demands the breaking of pride and self-righteousnessWe all have a choice to make when we are confronted with the gospel of Jesus ChristThe gospel is good news for those who humble themselves and repent of sin and put their trust in ChristFor those who refuse to repent, it becomes a repugnant message they will either ignore or try to suppress.Discredit the messageDiscredit the messengerKill the messengerWe Need to Stay True to the gospel of Jesus Christ No Matter What v. 25;29-31Stay the course, no matter what! What do we do when we feel discouraged and want to give up ministry?Keep prayingKeep worshipingKeep being part of a churchKeep participating in biblical discipleship groupsKeep on ministering to people and trust the results to GodWe need to continue to encourage one another because ministry will have its challengesA phone callA noteA blessingA prayerA brother/sister in the Lord to walk along side Closing:

In 1939, as the shadow of war spread over Europe, British stockbroker Nicholas Winton helped to spirit hundreds of threatened children out of Czechoslovakia. In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll describe Winton's struggle to save the children and the world's eventual recognition of his achievements. We'll also consider some ghostly marriages and puzzle over a ship's speed. Intro: There's a "technical version" of "A Visit From St. Nicholas." Critic A.E. In this episode, I welcome Josh Rissmiller, a corporate partner at the Boston law firm Feinberg Hanson. Josh began his career at two large and very prominent firms in New York and in Boston. In this show, he talks about his transition, what it was like to leave a large firm and lessons he has learned along the way. Episode 27-Intro There are many advantages of starting your career at a large firm. It is hard to compete with the training you get as an associate at an AmLaw 100 firm. The clients tend to be larger and the legal issues tend to be more complex. Overall, the caliber of lawyering is very high. Some lawyers who launch their careers at these firms will eventually be elevated to partner. The reality today, is that most associates will never make partner at a big firm. Many don’t want to make partner or if they do, the path to partnership is long. In addition to long hours, the clients are demanding and the high bill rates make it challenging to build your own practice. At the same time, their are fewer seats at the table than there were 30 years ago. If you are an associate at an AmLaw 100 or 200 firm, the odds are good that you will leave by the time you are in your 8th year. But where will you go? For some, the next step in the career is a move to a smaller firm where hours are better and bill rates are lower. For others, a move in-house is the next step. So what do you gain when you move to a smaller law firm? What do you give up? What is challenging about leaving a large firm? Josh Rissmiller is a corporate lawyer with the law firm Feinberg Hanson in Boston. Several years ago he left a promising career at a large firm to join a sophisticated corporate boutique in Boston. Originally, Josh thought about making an in-house move; but then he began to explore a move to a smaller firm and he liked what he saw. He hasn’t looked back. For the past ten years, Josh has been helping entrepreneurs, high growth companies and private equity firms successfully complete mergers and acquisitions, private equity transactions and investments in emerging companies. He also provides counsel on day-to-day corporate legal needs such as routine contracts and employee agreements. He has represented a diverse group of clients across many industries but has a particular focus on technology and life sciences. Josh enjoys working with both investment-side and company-side clients to craft creative solutions to deal-related issues. He has worked on mergers valued in the billions as well as seed financings valued in the thousands. Many of the matters have involved transactions with complex structures, such as tender offers, fund formations, minority private equity investments, joint ventures, recapitalizations, spin-offs, and purchase option transactions. Intro: There is a big difference between a person trying to please an audience and a person who is trying to engage an audience with an important message. One says whatever the people wish to hear, the other builds bridges with the people to share an uncompromising message. We Need to Build Bridges with People 1. Take time to get to know their language 2. Take time to get to know their culture 3. Take time to establish relationships 4. Take time to hear their questions and issues 2. We Need to Have the Right Heart Attitude 1. The Great Commission 2. The Love of Christ 3. The Love for All People 3.We Need to Be Obedient to Jesus 1. We share the gospel when we have earned a hearing with a person 2. We share the gospel using our own story 3. We live the gospel in all areas of our lives Closing: So I need to ask three critical questions this morning: 1) Are we a bridge builder or a barrier builder?; 2) How is our heart attitude towards those who need to know Christ?; 3) Are we willing to be obedient to Jesus in loving people and having compassion for them?

INTRO There is so much to talk about regarding High Point Furniture Market that we broke up our discussion into 2 parts. If you didn’t listen to part 1, you might want to go back to Episode 58 and listen to that one first. First we will quickly reiterate a few important details: 1. High Point Market is the largest home furnishings trade show in the world. It brings more than 75,000 people to High Point, N.C., every six months to view product from more than 2,000 exhibitors. 2. Highpoint market is in the Spring and Fall so the upcoming show is coming up soon - October 19th-23rd. 3. If you haven’t registered yet, you can still do so at highpointmark.org/register. 3. OUR FAVORITES On Episode 58 we talked a lot about the logistics of High Point – where to stay, where to eat and how to get around. On this show we’d like to dig deeper and let you know about some of our favorite showrooms, new news coming out from the Highpoint Market Authority and some great educational opportunities. A. Cool Stuff to be Aware Of i. Evening Programming - HMA is rebranding its popular evening concert series. In the area between Showplace the the Transportation Terminal, there will be new festivities dubbed “Eats and Beats” where there will be outdoor seating and firepits and (2) areas sponsored by Crate & Barrel and CB2 that will have music, giant outdoor games, cocktails, a dj and a whole lot more. There will still be (2) concerts by T Sisters and Mandolin Orange. ii. Watch out for this bloggers and all they have to share: Sara Malek Barney, Laurence Carr, Lori Dennis, Tim Green, Donna Mancini, Amy Mitchell, Rachel Moriarty, Lisa Peck, Sara Noble and Deborah von Donop. iv. HPM Brand Ambassadors – Our friends Jacki Von Tobel and Deb Barrett are newly appointed HPMA Ambassadors. They will be hosting a new-buyer focused 5-day tour that will provide first time attendees a HPM immersion. If I was brand new to High Point, this is the very first thing I would sign up for. v. Educational and Social Programming – Do NOT make the mistake of going to HPM and spending every minute of your day looking at product. Your feet and your brain will appreciate you changing gears. In 1955, aliens from the planet Clarion contacted a Chicago housewife to warn her that the end of the world was imminent. Psychologist Leon Festinger saw this as a unique opportunity to test a new theory about human cognition. In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll follow him inside a UFO religion as it approaches the apocalypse. We'll also try to determine when exactly LBJ became president and puzzle over some wet streets. Intro: There's a hexagon of cloud at Saturn's north pole. You're not as unpopular as you think you are. Intro: “There are certain truths which stand out so openly on the roadsides of life, as it were, that every passer-by may see them. Yet, because of their obviousness, the general run of people disregard such truths or at least they do not make them the object of any concious knowledge. People are so blind … Continue reading "Talking Big Game ep 44 – Everyones grass is brown"

We are joined by the host of podcast Commercial Drones FM, Ian Smith, who gives us a fascinating understanding of how drones are being used today and in the future. From petri-dish wielding drones that follow whales, to miniature drones working in warehouses, to thermal sensing drones in the mining industry—drones are starting to be used extensively and will continue to grow in the future. We go over the technology, the use cases, the regulations, and the future. Intro: There’s never been a good way, ever, to get snot from a whale to see how healthy they are or do other types of experiments. It can hover right above the whale as it’s surfacing, and it will just have a little petri dish that when the whale blows it’s blowhole, all the snot just goes on it. Then they bring it back to the boat, and then they analyze it later. Curtis: One big area that uses AI and will continue to increase use of it is drone technology. One of the big things that machine learning enables drones to do is be aware of its surroundings. Computer vision classifiers help the drones identify objects that it is seeing and take appropriate action, such as avoiding obstacles, performing maintenance recon, and charting autonomous flight paths. Ginette: Let’s talk to someone steeped in all things drones who can give us insights into drones and how AI currently plays a role and will continue to play a role as drones evolve. This is Ian Smith. Ian: I got into drones in 2013, but before that I had actually built and flown model aircraft, like RCE aircraft with little tiny gas engines, and the balsa wood, and the glue that you have to wait overnight for it to set, and yeah it was a lot of work, and I wound up flying helicopters for my career, so I’m a commercial helicopter pilot. I was a flight instructor, and I heard in 2013 that RC aircraft that model aircraft had come so far that there was people that were using them. They were calling them drones, and they were taking pictures with them and selling them to people, but it was illegal in the United States because there was no regulation from the FAA at the time. So of course I decided to get into this as much as I could, since I wasn’t flying at the time, and ever since then in 2013 it’s been my career, and I worked for a company in France called Delair, and today I work for a company in San Francisco where I’m based now called DroneDeploy, and I host a podcast about drones called Commercial Drones FM as a side project. Curtis: So if you’re looking for more on drones after this episode, go check out Ian’s podcast. He covers all things drone and will keep you up on the latest. Let’s take a broad look at some of the use cases for drones. Ian: Some of the use cases, some of the industries that are using drones really are . . . agriculture was one that everyone latched on to. The construction industry of course. Inspecting assets, so whether that’s oil and gas or utilities or something else entirely, like wind turbines, or something like that. There’s general land surveyors that use drones for mapping activities, and of course there’s the film and photography. Everybody’s by now has seen a Youtube video of a drone or a drone shot in a movie or TV show. . . . Then there’s the mining industry who use them to calculate volumetrics of stockpiles, and search and rescue for finding people and putting crazy sensors on these drones that can sense thermal signatures. The way they’re being used, it’s really up to your imagination. Pretty much anything outside that can get a GPS signal these days. They're going to go towards more indoors things and closed, confined spaces too, so we're seeing just amazing use cases. People have these incredible imaginations, and the more you ask somebody what would a drone do for you? You just get these awesome responses, and it’s really cool to hear what people come up with. They’re even using them for wildlife monitoring,
