A population of elephants in Angola lives in hiding, and only a few villages know their secret. But one big hint to their whereabouts stands tall in the main rotunda of the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History. If the NGOWP team can find them, these elephants might be the key to smoothening some of the human wildlife conflict in Southern Africa. Show notes: To learn more, visit www.wildbirdtrust.com. This episode referenced the late writer Jean Valentine, the clown cemetery from the Chicago Tribune, and Henry the elephant. This podcast is hosted by Kerllen Costa. It is written, recorded, and directed by Cat Jaffee and House of Pod in partnership with the National Geographic Okavango Wilderness Project. Funding for this project comes from a National Geographic storytelling grant and the Wild Bird Trust. Fact checking was conducted by Aimee Machado. Juliette Luini is the producer. The audio editor and sound designer is Jason Paton. The Angolan producer is Kerllen Costa, and the Motswana producer is Thalefang Charles. Story editing comes from Rebecca Mendoza Nunziato.  Geração 80 is the recording studio in Angola. Music: The Guardians of the River theme song was created by Victor Gama. Victor is a composer and designer of contemporary musical instruments for new music. He performs solo, with his trio or with ensembles playing his large pieces from small to big halls such as the Concertgebouw, Carnegie Hall or Centro Cultural de Belém. INSTRMNTS - Victor Gama, his award winning interactive exhibition with workshops and concerts, has been installed at London's Royal Opera House, Madrid's Fundación Carlos D'Amberes, UK's National Center for Design and Crafts and many more. The theme music of this podcast is a journey of sounds from the villagers of Tempue preparing food and drumming on bomb drums while celebrating their faith in village churches, which is interwoven with a greeting song by the children of Tempue sung before the community meeting. There is also a reed harp played by Tom Rethio, a WaYei musician who lives near Seronga in Botswana. Victor also used a number of his own instruments including the kissanje, which is one of the most important traditional instruments in Angola and is found especially in Moxico and the Lundas. Most kissanji have small metal rings on their tines which produce a rattling noise as the musician plays, creating rhythmic patterns. In the music, we aspire to communicate that nature is ever present, that the history of the land has a sound, that learning is joyful, that elders tell stories non-linearly and give their knowledge permission to wander, and that young voices are ready to be heard. In addition to custom pieces from Victor, the music featured in the series also comes from Victor's 2010 album Pangeia Instrumentos. The tracks included on the podcast are O Pescador De Sonhos, Homem Vermelho Homem Verde, A Guerra dos Homens Répteis, O Olho No Anzol, O Diálogo Dos Pernetas, Mibanga. Art: The episode art for Guardians of the River was illustrated by Fernando Hugo Fernandes. Fernando is an illustrator and graphic artist with over 30 years of experience living in Campinas Brazil. The episode art for the series was meant to encapsulate some of the Guardians of the Okavango River Basin, from the long-standing human residents and indigenous tribes members to the hippos and elephants and bats and dragonflies. There is also a plane. And the hidden dragon-like demon legend, Mukisi. Remember, Mukisi can't be seen with human eyes. How many guardians can you spot? And what makes each of these elements a guardian? Keep listening to find out.

Project Details Hello friend, I am Timothy Kimo Brien, head instigator at Create Art Podcast where we help you to tame the inner critic and create more than we consume. Every year in April National Poetry Writing Month occurs, this is a challenge to write 30 poems in 30 days and comes from the NaPoWriMo site. When you participate you are given a prompt every day for 30 days and you can choose to follow the prompt or not. Each prompt has a commentary with it and a style of poetry that you may not be familiar with. I enjoy it because it stretches my creative muscles and helps me organize my thoughts. I also really enjoy a good challenge. There is also an opportunity to read other people's work as they post on their websites and for you to comment on their work, giving them encouragement or offering a suggestion. Care to join me on this journey? Day 23 Prompt Today, I’d like to challenge you to write a poem that responds, in some way, to another. This could be as simple as using a line or image from another poem as a jumping-off point, or it could be a more formal poetic response to the argument or ideas raised in another poem. You might use a favorite (or least favorite poem) as the source for your response. And if you’re having trouble finding a poem to respond to, here are a few that might help you generate ideas: “This World is Not Conclusion,” by Peter Gizzi, “In That Other Fantasy Where We Live Forever,” by Wanda Coleman, “La Chalupa, the Boat,” by Jean Valentine, or “Aubade: Some Peaches, After Storm,” by Carl Phillips. Day 23 Poem Whimper – response to T.S.Elliot’s The Hollow Men 1 Remembrance We are the ones who aren’t innocent We do not ask for mercy Admitting our “sins” to those others deem worthy Is not the path we have chosen We just ask to be in your thoughts We want to be part of your memory The holy life escaped us As we tread our own way to our new home 2. Entrance As we walk into the new realm Some try to hide in shame Others try to cover themselves in hopes that they will be transported to a happier place We are being watched obtrusively Every movement calculated So some of us stop moving altogether But the wind pushes us all forward To our unknown destination 3. Arrival We are here But not with each other Those that have traveled this path Disappeared when I woke A faint sun has risen And the stars seem almost brighter I am alone And the urge to keep walking has ceased This feels like it will be my home I will pay whatever eternal penance here Among the nothingness 4. Empty As I look around The eyes that once penetrated my soul Are no longer here The next day, if that is what I can call it I see the footprints around my camp But not the footprints I created I know they are not mine As I step in them Most do not fit Either to large or small And I feel the fresh warmth From another’s foot As I step inside their print 5. Eternal Shadow The sun never blazes as it did The world feels numb My body doesn’t react as it once did And my emotions are dulled The songs that brought me hope Have warped into a doomsday nursery rhyme After countless days I have forgotten my name After eons, I have forgotten how to count At some point, I decreased to a whisper Until there was no I  Reaching Out To reach out to me, email timothy@createartpodcast.com I would love to hear about your journey and what you are working on.

For our October Narrative Medicine Rounds, we celebrate the work of the late poet Max Ritvo (1990-2016), whose acclaimed book of poems Four Reincarnations (Milkweed Edition, 2016) was written in New York and Los Angeles over the course of a long battle with cancer. We use the word "presence" in the title because the goal is to bring Max Ritvo into the room—not just through his poetry, but through his presence, so movingly captured in videos and audio recordings that allow him to read his own poetry for the audience. Poet Lucie Brock-Broido, who is Director of Poetry in the School of the Arts at Columbia University, will introduce the poet's work, providing context and connecting the many facets of Ritvo's work and world. The idea of "presence" also comes into play because the essence of his poetry is a presence-ing, a bringing near and being present in spite of any journeying off and going far. He is a poet of exquisite embodiment, a fact that is crucial to his essence and especially relevant for Narrative Medicine, which concerns itself with the power of the embodied presence, in spite of illness and even in the face of death. Ritvo's poetry and presence are death-defying, as expressed in Ritvo's own words: "Let room mean death or room mean life, but let the room always be full." Max Ritvo was also the author of the chapbook AEONS, chosen by Jean Valentine to receive the Poetry Society of American Chapbook Fellowship in 2014. Ritvo's poetry has appeared in the The New Yorker, Poetry, and the Boston Review, and as a Poem-a-Day for Poets.org. His prose and interviews have appeared in publications such as Lit Hub, Huffington Post, and the Los Angeles Review of Books. Three of his poems will appear in the next issue of Parnassus; A Public Space has one of his poems in a forthcoming issue as well. Milkweed Editions has announced the 2018 publication of Letters from Max, a book of his correspondence with playwright Sarah Ruhl, a two-time Pulitzer Prize finalist. Lucie Brock-Broido is a poet, whose most recent book of poems, Stay, Illusion (Alfred A. Knopf), was a Finalist in Poetry for the 2013 National Book Award, 2013 National Book Critics Circle Award, and the Kingsley Tufts Poetry Award. Her previous collections include Trouble in Mind, The Master Letters, and A Hunger. Her poems have appeared in The Paris Review, The New York Times, Parnassus: Poetry in Review, The American Poetry Review, Poetry, The Nation, The New Republic, Best American Poetry, and The New Yorker. Brock-Broido has been the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship and two National Endowment for the Arts Awards. She is Director of Poetry in the School of the Arts at Columbia University. Joel Greenberg has been reading up on & researching Bletchley Park’s World War Two history since the 1970s. He is a Volunteer Tour Guide & works part time at Bletchley Park. His book, Gordon Welchman, Bletchley Park’s Architect of Ultra Intelligence, was launched in the Mansion in the presence of Welchman’s family, who formally handed over artefacts and documents, some of which had been in boxes in his son Nick’s loft for 25 years before Joel started his research. Get a taste of what’s to come at the Bletchley Park Presents series of Sunday afternoon talks & hear from three of the real women of Bletchley Park, Jean Valentine, Ruth Bourne & Betty Webb in a short interview with Bremont Watches founder Giles English. Finally we bring you a Wren’s memories of the absolute secrecy impressed upon her when she arrived. Elizabeth Marshall, nee Tatham, who lives in Ashbourne, Derbyshire, recalls “We were told your family and your friends must not know.’ We sat there absolutely agog, wondering what we had let ourselves in for.” Picture ©Bletchley Park Trust #BPark, #BletchleyPark, #Enigma, #ww2veteran, #Bremont, #mcfontaine

Ben & Daniel talk with Joseph D. Haske, whose recently-released debut novel is "North Texas Highway." The book grew out of a couple of stories, and the timeline flashes back & forth between the 1990s and 1980s. Joe explains why the fragmented nature of the book relates to the fragmented nature of the actual North Dixie Highway. Joe also talks about balancing his life as a writer and as the Chair of the English Department at South Texas College in the border town of McAllen, Texas. For today's Poem of the Week, Ben reads "Friend" by Jean Valentine, written in memory of her friend Adrienne Rich. In this week's Poetic License, Daniel shares a story from his childhood which demonstrates his mother's unusual (and dark) sense of humor.
