In this episode of Beyond Happiness (part II) – Oh, The Joy! I've been having such a blast rewriting my blog posts as playful Dr. Seuss-style poems. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do!
While pedaling through the beautiful, golden hills of Southern California this past weekend, a question came to mind: “Why does this feel so good? And why settle for happiness when you can experience something even deeper?” After fifty-five years of life, this ride was about to offer an answer.
What is the difference between happiness and joy, and how can we experience greater contentment, even when life doesn't go as planned? In this episode, I explore the Buddhist perspectives and modern insights that reveal happiness as a fleeting emotional state, while joy represents a deeper, more enduring form of well-being. Drawing inspiration from “The Book of Joy” by the Dalai Lama, “Happiness” by Matthieu Ricard, and “The Let Them Theory” by Mel Robbins, I discuss practical exercises and teachings that help us cultivate a more resilient, compassionate, and flexible approach to life's inevitable ups and downs. Join me as we learn to hold space for joy in every moment, beyond mere happiness. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
What is the benefit of adventure, the role of adversity, and the importance of narrative in shaping one's experience of happiness? What are the larger areas of fulfillment that round out one's well-being and shape one's life experience? Shigehiro (Shige) Oishi is a professor of psychology at the University of Chicago and the author of the books Life in Three Dimensions: How Curiosity, Exploration, and Experience Make a Fuller, Better Life and The Psychological Wealth of Nations: Do Happy People Make a Happy Society?Greg and Shige discuss the evolving field of subjective well-being, distinguishing between happiness, meaning, and Shige's newly proposed third dimension – psychological richness. He discusses how these dimensions can sometimes conflict but also complement each other. They also delve into how culture, personality, and life choices like exploration versus stability affect psychological richness, and offer practical insights on how both individuals and organizations can cultivate a richer life.*unSILOed Podcast is produced by University FM.*Episode Quotes:On why there's a need for a third dimension to a good life[12:01] Some people really don't like structure. Some people really don't like routines. Some people really like to explore the world and find something interesting, something new. So when you, for instance, look at the big five personality traits and which traits are correlated with the happy life and meaningful life, and actually one big part of the big five traits, openness, the experience, it's not really correlated with happiness or meaning either. So, given that right, a lot of personality psychologists think that there are five global traits because they are useful. They're functional. Maybe there's an evolutionary reason.Sensation seekers struggle with reflection and growth[24:38] If you are [a] boredom-prone person, then obviously I think you have to do something new. But when you do something new, I think one thing you can change here is the reflection. I think what sensation seekers do not tend to do is that just after having this adventure, [is] sit down, reflect upon, and savor their experiences. If you do that, I think the boredom, at least the frequency of the boredom will be reduced. What is the optimal amount of psychological richness?[27:51] I think you could definitely pursue psychological richness too much, right? I mean, some people may think, "Oh, I have to do something new every moment, every day."But as I said, unless you can just reflect upon [it] and add it up in your psychological memorabilia or portfolio, it is not really adding up. So essentially, unless you can just reflect upon and remember these experiences, it doesn't work that well. I think too much richness is the situation where, given a short period of time, you experience too much that you cannot really process and remember. On the human tendency toward familiarity—and its hidden costs[16:21] Looking at all kinds of cognitive bias literature, I think there's a huge familiarity bias. I mean, Bob Zagonc found this mere exposure effect in the 1960s, and essentially we like familiar things, right? And also, loss aversion is a huge example. The endowment effect is the same thing. Once you own it, you think it's more valuable than the new thing, right? So I think all these things are biased towards the familiar and sure gain. And if you're trying to maximize happiness, that's great. That's the strategy you should take actually. BuEt that has a downside, such as we said, you don't learn anything new. Maybe your curiosity is not fully met and you're not adventurous enough to discover something.Show Links:Recommended Resources:Jeremy BenthamSubjective Well-beingHappiness is everything, or is it?EudaimoniaJiro Dreams of SushiJohn Stuart MillBlaise PascalMarcel ProustBob ZajoncNick EpleyEd DienerCarol RyffGuest Profile:Faculty Profile at the University of ChicagoProfile on LinkedInSocial Profile on XHis Work:Amazon Author PageLife in Three Dimensions: How Curiosity, Exploration, and Experience Make a Fuller, Better LifeThe Psychological Wealth of Nations: Do Happy People Make a Happy Society?Google Scholar Page
This talk continues our Bhagavad-gita Wisdom Series with the topic: “Beyond Happiness & Distress – A Guide to Emotional Well-Being.”We explore two fundamental perspectives:• The materialistic view, which identifies the self with the body and mind.• The spiritual perspective, which sees the self as an eternal spiritual being temporarily residing in a body and struggling with the mind.According to yogic teachings, emotions arise from mental processes and are not intrinsic to the soul. These teachings emphasize the importance of tolerating desires and emotions rather than being controlled by them. This state of inner steadiness is likened to an ocean—remaining calm despite the many rivers that flow into it.The ancient wisdom of yoga introduces the concept of becoming an Atmarama—one who is self-satisfied—finding lasting spiritual happiness within rather than seeking temporary fulfillment in external sources.Meditation is a key practice for self-realization, accessible to everyone. The transformative power of meditating on transcendental sound can be compared to the sunrise dispelling fog, bringing clarity and insight. As yoga wisdom deepens, it reshapes one's perspective on life and relationships, leading to genuine peace and fulfillment. The verses which I quote from the Bhagavad-gītā: Some look on the soul as amazing, some describe him as amazing, and some hear of him as amazing, while others, even after hearing about him, cannot understand him at all. Bhagavad-gītā 2.29 O son of Kuntī, the nonpermanent appearance of happiness and distress, and their disappearance in due course, are like the appearance and disappearance of winter and summer seasons. They arise from sense perception, O scion of Bharata, and one must learn to tolerate them without being disturbed. - Bhagavad-gītā 2.14O best among men [Arjuna], the person who is not disturbed by happiness and distress and is steady in both is certainly eligible for liberation. - Bhagavad-gītā 2.15That happiness which is derived from contact of the senses with their objects and which appears like nectar at first but poison at the end is said to be of the nature of passion. - Bhagavad-gītā 18.38That which in the beginning may be just like poison but at the end is just like nectar and which awakens one to self-realization is said to be happiness in the mode of goodness. - Bhagavad-gītā 18.37A person who is not disturbed by the incessant flow of desires—that enter like rivers into the ocean which is ever being filled but is always still—can alone achieve peace, and not the person who strives to satisfy such desires. - Bhagavad-gītā 2.70Be steadfast in yoga, O Arjuna. Perform your duty and abandon all attachment to success or failure. Such evenness of mind is called yoga. - Bhagavad-gītā 2.48These are some additional verses which you might benefit from:One who is not envious but who is a kind friend to all living entities, who does not think himself a proprietor, who is free from false ego and equal both in happiness and distress, who is always satisfied and engaged in (loving)devotional service with determination and whose mind and intelligence are in agreement with Me-he is very dear to Me. - Bhagavad-gītā 12.13-14One who is free from illusion, false prestige, and false association, who understands the eternal, who is done with material lust and is freed from the duality of happiness and distress, and who knows how to surrender unto the Supreme Person, attains to that eternal kingdom. - Bhagavad-gītā 15.5One who is not disturbed in spite of the threefold miseries, who is not elated when there is happiness, and who is free from attachment, fear and anger, is called a sage of steady mind. - Bhagavad-gītā 2.56For one who has conquered the mind, the Super Soul is already reached, for they have attained tranquillity. To such a man happiness and distress, heat and cold, honor and dishonor are all the same. - Bhagavad-gītā 6.7
How do you create lasting happiness in your life and career? More importantly, how do you take responsibility for it? In this episode of Reflect Forward, I explore why happiness is a worthy goal and why you must take ownership of your well-being. I reflect on my fireside chat with Jenn Lim, CEO of Delivering Happiness and author of Beyond Happiness, to discuss how true happiness is cultivated through purpose, progress, and deep connections—not just quick dopamine hits. Happiness and leadership are closely linked. Unhappy leaders create disengaged teams, while fulfilled leaders inspire innovation and growth. Workplace culture thrives when individuals take ownership of their happiness and well-being. In this episode, Jenn and I explore the mindset shifts and daily habits that help leaders and employees build sustainable happiness, resilience, and fulfillment in work and life. Key Takeaways • Happiness is a choice and a skill. It requires effort, mindset shifts, and intentional action. • Dopamine vs. sustainable happiness. Quick dopamine hits (social media, alcohol, shopping) provide momentary pleasure but do not lead to long-term well-being. True fulfillment comes from purpose, progress, and relationships. • Leadership and happiness are interconnected. When leaders take responsibility for their happiness, they set the tone for an engaged, motivated workplace culture. • Use the “LIT Framework” to define your purpose. Light (what excites you), Impact (how you contribute), and Talent (what you excel at) help align your career and life with what brings fulfillment. • Self-care is a discipline, not a luxury. Leaders and professionals must prioritize their mental, physical, and emotional well-being to show up fully. • Gratitude creates a ripple effect. Regularly expressing gratitude strengthens team culture, improves relationships, and enhances personal happiness. This episode is essential for leaders, entrepreneurs, and professionals looking to improve workplace engagement, personal fulfillment, and resilience. Happiness at work leads to higher productivity, stronger collaboration, and a healthier company culture. Welcome back to the ProfitSchool podcast Business Unfiltered with Mercer and Jeff Sauer today's topic is Keeping Great Team Members. Beyond Happiness vs. Engagement: Jeff and Mercer discuss how managers shouldn't focus on making employees "happy" (which they can't control) but rather on creating an engaging environment where team members can thrive and grow naturally. The Growth Factor: The key insight is that people stay with companies as long as they learn and grow. Creating an environment of continuous growth and development is crucial for retention, more than just high compensation. The Abundance Mindset: Success in retaining talent comes from adopting an abundance mindset rather than a scarcity mentality. This includes investing in team members through training, coaching, and professional development opportunities. Building the Inner Circle: Bringing valuable team members into the decision-making process and teaching them to think strategically helps create lasting engagement and loyalty, especially in small businesses where individual contributions matter more. Recognition and Results: The importance of celebrating successes publicly while handling challenges privately, creating an environment where team members feel supported even when facing difficulties. Investment in People: Mercer and Jeff believe investing in team members through education, bonuses, recognition, and growth opportunities is crucial for long-term retention, especially in smaller businesses where institutional knowledge is vital.

Send us a Text Message. In this episode of Masterful Listening, I recount the day of my immigration from Moldova, a twist of fate that coincided with the actual closure of the borders on the eve of the USSR's collapse. In Moldova, my family was relatively well-off despite the constraints of the USSR. Overnight, my journey took a significant turn as I experienced life as a refugee and immigrant in Brooklyn, NY navigating the challenges of starting anew in pursuit of the American dream. At the age of 20, I stumbled upon "The Geography of Bliss," a book that revealed Moldova's status as the world's unhappiest country, sparking a decade-long exploration into the essence of happiness. This discovery led me through a decade of research, a journey through depression, and ultimately transformation. From experiencing welfare to gaining access to private school and a middle-class American lifestyle, I witnessed firsthand the stark contrast between different states of being. My path eventually led me to California, where I now live a life that once felt utterly unattainable. Through my story, I invite the audience to explore beyond the conventional notions of happiness and embrace a life enriched by resilience, compassion, and meaning. It was only when I stopped seeking happiness that my life turned into one of profound gratitude for the multidimensionality of the human experience. Clare Morin speaks to Jenn Lim, bestselling author and speaker known for her work on happiness and workplace well-being, and Swapnil Prabha, Vice President of Workforce Wellness Solutions at Unum Group focusing on employee benefits and mental health. They discuss topics related to authentic leadership, mental health and workplace well-being. Authentic Leadership: Lim emphasizes the importance of authentic leadership in today's working world. She defines authentic leadership as being true to one's authentic self and emphasizes that it involves self-awareness and addressing both strengths and weaknesses. “Just be real and be weird and like everyone's weird in their own way. And why not cherish that and celebrate it, says Lim.” [11:55]The Greenhouse Model: Lim introduces the "Greenhouse Model," which focuses on first nurturing one's own well-being and values. She says, “I went to more of this metaphor of growth. No matter who we talk to in the world, there's no one that wants to not grow.” Lim emphasizes that authentic leaders should start by grounding themselves and understanding their purpose and values. JOY – BEYOND HAPPINESS. Everywhere in the Bible, we are called to be joyful, but at times true joy can seem elusive. Joy is better likened to a quiet, inner assuredness of the presence of God. Author, marketplace expert, and public speaker, Jenn Lim, joins Tayo on the podcast today. Together, they engage in a deep conversation about Jenn's journey to find happiness, why such happiness is missing in today's workplace, and how we can start to incorporate it into both our professional and personal lives. Opening up the episode with a brief note on embracing pain and trusting in the process, Jenn notes that when we reckon with pain and discomfort, we make friends with the enemies that they once were. And according to her, that's just the beginning of a long path toward happiness. Jenn goes on to talk about the significance of trust, progress, connectedness, and, most importantly, purpose. When we engage in activities that reinforce our values, we are more likely to decrease the amount of volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity in our daily lives. And that goes for the workplace as well. Through her work, Jenn has witnessed so many beautiful stories of people connecting with themselves and their work in deep and meaningful ways. And, as you listen in today, you'll learn that you, too, can join in and experience this great happiness awakening yourself. Jenn Lim is the CEO of Delivering Happiness (DH), a company she and Tony Hsieh (the late CEO of Zappos.com) cofounded to create happier company cultures for a more profitable and sustainable approach to business. Highlights: “A big part of happiness is not just our highs but it's also our lows…and I did not know that at the time I would be experiencing one of the biggest lows in my life.” [8:45] Jenn Lim reflects upon the loss of Tony Hsieh during the publishing of her book, Beyond Happiness. “I started doing really purposeful work on how you can create organizations with scientific happiness, positive psychology, and be profitable too.” [12:50] After a series of profound life events, Jenn experienced a shift where her work with Tony Hseih and Delivering Happiness began. “A sense of authentic self, pleasure and higher purpose are essentially the three elements of happiness.” [14:05] Jenn provides a brief definition of happiness and Marcel challenges the meaning of the book title, Beyond Happiness. Going beyond creates deeper conversation on the highs and lows, mental health, and “shadow sides”. “Did the pandemic affect how we were able to connect and relate to each other and raise our happiness? We are kind of post-pandemic now, but we're never really past it. So how has that changed how we should look at happiness and business?” [18:27] Marcel brings a connection to the pandemic...the time in which Jenn was working on the book. Jenn comments on how we are seeing that shift in attention to happiness with the “Great Resignation”, what she refers to as a “Great Awakening”. “They realized their whole entire purpose, which was to ripple out impact and happiness, to their customers and community.” [23:30] Mountain View Egypt is a client of Delivering Happiness, Jenn shares their journey in and outcome in shifting their practices surrounding culture and happiness in their business. “If you think about these different levels of happiness all of us as leaders can embed these things in our systems and know that if we give people more autonomy; we give people more sense of progress and connectedness and a higher purpose that they align to their personal purpose. That's where the magic happens. ” [27:00] What can leaders do to improve happiness in their organization? Jenn discusses the impact that can happen. “It's great to have a mission statement on the wall, but what does it actually mean?” [29:00] Jenn challenges leaders to hone and develop their purpose and how they are embedding these practices of happiness by attaching meaning and value to their people's work. My guest this week is delivering happiness every day. Jenn Lim is an inspiration to me and soon, will be to you too. When Jenn was in college and decided to change her major, against some advice, she wandered into other studies and changed gears, telling herself, "I'm gonna do this for myself". Because she was curious and industrious, she eventually created an opening in the business world and was off to the races…until. After some early experiences in the DOT com boom and a series of unpredictable events, she saw a demand for happiness in the world, and decided to do something about it. A company around happiness. How cool is that? She asked herself: Why am I chasing these things that really don't mean that much? Aren't freedom, authenticity, and relationships more important? She wanted to live and work with a heartful mind and a mindful heart. What advice does she have for those looking for a great life/career: Is this how I want to spend the minutes in my day? What are your values? What's your purpose? Ask yourself these questions; you know. When applying for any role, remember: it's a social contract; one that benefits you and the company equally to save time, money, and energy. Finally, use curiosity more! Ask questions of yourself and others; questions can be more powerful than answers. More about Jenn: Jenn Lim is the bestselling author of Beyond Happiness, and the CEO of Delivering Happiness [DH], a company she and Tony Hsieh [the late CEO of Zappos.com] cofounded to create happier company cultures for a more profitable and sustainable approach to business. DH has worked with or spoken at more than 400 companies and organizations worldwide, including Starbucks, Sallie Mae, Lockheed Martin, Zoom, Northwell Health, and more. In her new bestselling book, Beyond Happiness: How Authentic Leaders Prioritize Purpose and People for Growth and Impact, Jenn draws on her decades of experience in culture and strategy to translate it into a practical “how-to” framework so workplaces can adapt quicker, couple purpose and profits, and modernize org design to the Great Resignation and Great Awakening. As a result, she guides all of us—no matter our title or role—on how to live more meaningful lives through the work we do every day. Jenn has been featured in Inc., Forbes, Fortune, Entrepreneur, Fast Company, Thrive Global, MSN, Fox Business, CNBC Make It, Success Magazine, etc. and has been coined by many industry experts, thought leaders, and members of the media, as the “happiness expert.” Follow her @byjennlim https://jennlim.com/ And check out my bestselling book: Peace, Possibilities, and Perspective: 8 Secrets to Serenity and Satisfaction in Your Life and Career https://2possibilityandbeyond.com/my-book
