If you have followed the progress of this show since the beginning, you can see the evolution of what we talk about. In the beginning it was about brands and Master Distillers, then when we started Pursuit Spirits we were introduced into the world of brokers and the middle layer of people who own barrels without brands. That information has made its way to you and now you know more about the market. But that brokered market is heavily guarded. It's a series of handshakes, phone calls, and emails with excel spreadsheets with prices to see what's available. However, Rob Arnold with Barrel Hub is trying to make access easier for everyone. Rob isn't new to this game. He spent his undergraduate in Texas and is the person responsible for the pecan yeast strain used by TX Whiskey to this day. We talk about his background and how that led to the idea of creating a portal where industry folks can buy and sell barrels on the wholesale market. To close out 2023, I chose to do a list of the top 5 animated Christmas movies and so, here is my entry. There is no right or wrong answer. I may have left off your favorite movie or I may have listed one you have never even heard of before. That's the great thing about making lists! We can compare, we can banter, we can even give each other a friendly ribbing for our choices, but we also learn about new movies to watch for ourselves. I hope you enjoy this extra bonus episode with its seasonal theme as we get ready to bid a fond farewell to 2023 and welcome the New Year! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Today we spend the entirety of the show discussing the terrorist attack on the nation of Israel. There is no equivocation. There is no justification. There is nothing that should be said to, in any way, give cover to Hamas, and by way of extension, Iran. This was as brutal and as horrifying as anything they have done in the past and it is time to eliminate them from the face of the Earth. Our own administration spent the weekend trying to absolve themselves from every single one of their disastrous foreign policy decisions and actions. We have children pretending they are adults. We have people in power gifted with an abundance of magical-thinking mixed with strong narcissism, making them the most dangerous people in the room. They truly have no understanding how the real world works and have us on the brink of WWIII. We have to get control over our own border. Since Biden came into office, we know of at least 112,000 “significant interest aliens” that have come into our country. The Department of Homeland Security states, “Generally, an SIA is a non-U.S. person who, based on an analysis of travel patterns, potentially poses a national security risk to the United States or its interests. Often such individuals or groups are employing travel patterns known or evaluated to possibly have a nexus to terrorism.  DHS analysis includes an examination of travel patterns, points of origin, and/or travel segments that are tied to current assessments of national and international threat environments.” We need to reach out to our representatives and demand that our FBI and our intelligence community get back to the business of tracking down these threats and stop wasting time at school board meeting, Catholic churches and redefining Trump supporters as domestic terrorists. If we do not have a similar attack in our own country in the next 12-14 months, I will be shocked. Over the course of the show, we hear from a friend of mine, Rob Arnold, who lives in Israel, Nikki Haley, Antony Blinken, Jake Sullivan, a Chinese reporter in Tehran, and the CEO of the ADL Jonathan Greenblatt. Before the trampoline park boom in the family entertainment industry, Launch Entertainment was a really new concept. Rob Arnold, CEO of Launch Entertainment joins me today to talk about the opportunities in the family entertainment industry and how they've been able to stay ahead of the trend by building a robust experience for the entire family. The family entertainment industry is expected to reach a whopping $69 billion this year and Rob knows first hand what it is like to tap into that potential. Listen to this episode of Franchise Euphoria to learn about the company, their goals, and how their mom-and-pop trampoline park idea has evolved into more than 30 franchise locations complete with a full restaurant and multiple attractions.   Key Takeaways: [3:42] - Rob and his wife have always been entrepreneurs and he shares how the idea for Launch Entertainment was developed. [6:43] - At the time in 2011, there were only about 150 parks like this in the country. [8:31] - Their personal experience in 2011 took place in a location that was off the beaten path and they imagined what it would be like in a busier area. [10:52] - Rob knew what he wanted but couldn't find an existing model. [12:40] - He knew the potential and took the step to learn about franchising before he even opened the first location. [14:17] - Rob describes the experience of the grand opening of the first location and how impactful it was on the business. [15:58] - The first location was a retail location having taken over part of an old Sports Authority. [17:50] - In the beginning, the food was not good quality and they improved overall to a full restaurant included inside. [20:26] - Opening a second location is exciting but spotlights areas of improvement. [23:05] - With the opening of the second location, they kept the first space the same and improved the second one with more games and party rooms. [24:41] - What happens when a new location doesn't have a successful launch? [26:10] - Knowing they wanted to franchise, they started the franchise process early on with the first franchisee opening up a location within a year of the first location. [27:43] - They started with franchised locations with friends and families. This allowed them to test processes and systems with honest feedback. [29:26] - The popularity of trampoline parks blew up across the United States and Launch Entertainment branched out into different attractions. [31:08] - With more attractions catering to the whole family, it created more opportunities to make more money. [34:33] - Rob lists the other attractions they added to make the experience more robust. [39:01] - There are a lot of perks to opening a franchise with Launch Entertainment. [42:17] - When you build something, build a strong brand with a robust operational marketing system to support the growth that lies ahead.   Mentioned in This Episode: Launch Trampoline Park Website Franchise with Launch Entertainment

It's no surprise that people love short stories. They hold all the elements of a great novel — an intriguing theme, characters that seem to come to life, and storytelling that lingers even after the last page — all packaged in a brief, delightfully readable package. It's no wonder that award-winning author Don Lee has returned to short stories in his latest book, The Partition, 21 years after his landmark debut collection, Yellow, was published. In The Partition, Lee explored Asian American identity and the estrangement, alienation, and longing for connection that can come with it. Spanning decades, his nine novelistic stories traverse an array of cities from Tokyo to Honolulu to Boston, touching on encounters in local bars, restaurants, and hotels. Lee once said that his 2013 novel, The Collective, is about “sex, drugs, and rock and roll,” all while diving into the minds of relatable characters. The Partition follows a similar vibe. With almost acrobatic storytelling and characters that richly portray the human psyche, The Partition incisively examines heartbreak, identity, family, and relationships through characters searching for answers to universal questions: Where do I belong? How can I find love? What defines an authentic self? They're the kinds of questions that leave you wondering and examining your own life — all trademarks of great short stories, told by a seasoned storyteller. Don Lee is the author of the story collection Yellow and the novels Country of Origin, Wrack and Ruin, The Collective, and Lonesome Lies Before Us. He has received an American Book Award, the Asian/Pacific American Award for Literature, and the Sue Kaufman Prize for First Fiction. He lives in Baltimore with his wife, the writer Jane Delury, and teaches in the MFA program in creative writing at Temple University in Philadelphia. Rob Arnold is a Chamorro poet with nearly two decades of experience in literary publishing and related positions. Currently he is the interim executive director of Hugo House. His poems have appeared or are forthcoming in Ploughshares, the Gettysburg Review, Hyphen, and Poetry Northwest, among others. He has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize and has received support from the Somerville Arts Council, the Jack Straw Cultural Center, and Artist Trust.   B.S. Over A Couple Of Brews   Episode 2 - "Lofi Nofi"   Episode Summary:   Come join Rick-O and Korbs, and B.S. over a couple of brews. Tonight we discuss our favorite types of beer, some crazy concert experiences, and the music we both have been listening to lately. Rick-O's wireless mouse miraculously still works, so that's pretty cool. Cheers to good fortune, and also to remembrance!     The Brews: Rick-O's Brew: "Undead Party Crasher (Imperial Stout)" (Brewed by Clown Shoes)(Boston, MA) Korbs' Brew: "Sticky Situation Cinnamon Bun Stout" (Brewed by Legal Remedy Brewing Co.)(Rockhill, SC) Rick-O's Favorite Beer Styles: Stouts are my favorite. I mostly enjoy them for the rich flavor, and a lot of them tend to have hints of coffee. My second favorite type of beer is Porters, because there are a lot of coffee related porters out there. (Starting to see a pattern, here? Lol.) Lastly, I enjoy some sour beers, as long as they don't taste like straight-up stomach bile. I like the fruity sours, mostly. Korbs' Favorite Beer Styles: Porters Stouts Sours and Gose Beers, because they're a little bit lighter and don't make me feel like shit. Crazy Concert Experiences: Rick-O and Korbs went to a Lamb of God show at the LC Pavilion, in Columbus, OH. The venue is modelled after the House of Blues. The guy leaning over the rail of the upper balcony fell over the rail, and ended up falling 15 or 20 feet down on top of another concert goer pretty much shoulder to shoulder. Korbs went to the (3-9-2005) Lamb of God, Slipknot, and Shadow's Fall Show, at CSU Convocation Center in Cleveland, OH. Some guy with a compound leg fracture, had to be carried out of the pit and off the floor by a friend. Can't remember which show it was at The Foundry, but I had some random guy that was trying to talk to me right in the middle of a song that was real heavy. He tried to grab me around the back of my head to pull me towards him. I pushed him away, and when he came back towards me I picked him up and threw him into the middle of the pit. Then, the guy stood up and started making weird "Karate gestures". Everyone avoided the guy. I'm pretty sure the dude was on PCP or something. Lol. In 2017, Korbs went to a Decibel Magazine Festival. Pig Destroyer and Sleep were the headliners. Some dude was so high that he crumpled a full cup of water without spilling any, and tried to stick it in his back pocket. Dude did not spill a single drop. On 10-10-2011, a major fight broke out during the Chimaira show at The Outpost, in Kent, OH. Pretty sure it was Revocation and Impending Doom that were also on that bill. Andols was not playing drums with Chimaira at that time. It was Chimaira's last show of their Age of Hell album cycle. Korbs saw Ex-Chimaira Rhythm Guitarist, Matt DeVries, years later at an Unearth and Whitechapel concert in Chicago. Matt DeVries was playing guitar for Unearth. Korbs asked DeVries if he remembered that Outpost show, and he actually did.

The Age of Hell salió el 16 de agosto.

First Launch Capital Fund is a pre-seed/seed-stage venture capital fund headquartered in Greensboro that focuses on capital appreciation, economic development and job creation through investments in companies with high growth and future funding potential. The fund recently announced the closing of an investment in ThreatSketch, LLC a Winston-Salem-based cyber risk management tool. Thanks for joining us! This episode is sponsored by Truliant Federal Credit Union Visit Truliant here --------------------- Today's host is Lou Anne Flanders-Stec, the Chamber's Executive Vice President of Launch Greensboro, where she is responsible for programming for early-stage entrepreneurs. Lou Anne is also the Fund Executive for First Launch Capital Fund, a seed stage venture fund based in the Piedmont Triad region of North Carolina.   00:58 - Lou Anne opens with an introduction of herself and First Launch Capital Fund. She is joined by Bill Soles, an investment banker turned private investor, and Rob Arnold, the founder and CEO of Threat Sketch, a company that provides cybersecurity risk assessments for small and medium businesses.   3:32 - Lou Anne asks Rob for more on his background and what prompted him to start his own technology company. He explains how his early career enabled him to learn about many different technologies, allowing him to turn to independent consulting, and then started graduate school to learn more about the growing field of cyber security. Rob explains how this all led to the formation of Threat Sketch.   8:58 - There are a few real keys to success in the entrepreneurial and investment world. Lou Anne asks Rob what his keys to success have been in developing his company, and what aspects he thinks provide continued success for the future of his business. Rob emphasizes the strength of the entrepreneurial resources in the Piedmont Triad, credits the Lean Startup Bootcamp put on by the Startup Factory for giving him a firm foundation, and local angel networks for continued support.   12:55 - Lou Anne asks Rob about why he decided to raise capital for his business and what made him choose First Launch Capital as his investor. Rob explains that accessing capital allows a small business to grow more quickly and with more stability, while also being able to try riskier products and markets. Good investors mean the business can have more shots to optimize the product market fit and maximize return on investment.   15:30 - Lou Anne asks Bill how he approached the fundraising process, as one of Threat Sketch's key advisors. Bill gave the investor perspective and was able to clue Rob in to the need to “talk the talk” to investors, rather than speaking solely from an entrepreneur's perspective.   17:10 - Lou Anne inquires why Rob accepted First Capital's invitation for investment. Rob explains that First Launch is a bridge between the angel investment and the seed round that the company was planning later in the year. He wanted to signal to the investing community that Threat Sketch was growing and wanted to build a strong, very local company.   18:58 - Lou Anne asks Bill what his top considerations are when he makes an investment, and what he advises companies to think about when they start approaching investors. Bill explains that startups and early stage companies need a strong team with good entrepreneurial experience, ready to give 150% to the growth and success of the company. There also needs to be a big market for the product or service, multiple exit opportunities, and minimal capital to have the business succeed.   24:48 - Bill emphasizes the excellent management team that Threat Sketch has as another strong point of a good investment opportunity. A team needs to be able to pivot and adapt with strong leadership and good ideas.   25:30 - Lou Anne asks Bill what are the key goals and outcomes he has as an investor, besides the obvious return-on-investment. He sees positive results in financial return, job creation and growth, and strengthening the local and regional economy to keep the highly educated younger populations graduating from the colleges and universities.    31:50 - Lou Anne wraps up with more information about First Launch Capital Fund, how companies can qualify for investment opportunities, and how First Launch truly helps support early stage companies grow with more than just financial resources.  --------------------- Threat Sketch: https://threatsketch.com/   First Launch Capital Fund: https://www.firstlaunchcapital.com/   Contact Lou Anne (lafstec@firstlaunchcapital.com) if you're interested in learning more about  venture capital opportunities for your business.
