Russell was lucky to grow up in a musical family in Chagrin Falls, Ohio. His mother played the bassoon, his father played the french horn, and his step-father taught saxophone and played jazz. He began playing the bass in 4'th grade, but his interest in classical music began to spark when he began studying with Tracy Rowell and  joined the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra (COYO) his sophomore year. It wasn't until attending the inaugural summer of the National Music Festival in Floyd, Virginia that he considered pursuing music as a career.      He earned a bachelors degree in Music Performance from the Cleveland Institute of Music in 2015 before going on to earn a Master's degree at Boston University and a Master of Musical Arts at Yale. He was also a founding member of the disciplinary performance group Artists By Any Other Name based in New York City. During this time, he also found a love of teaching and of encouraging students to reach their fullest potential. Thompson is currently pursuing his doctorate at the University of North Texas with Jeff Bradetich. His previous teachers have included Tracy Rowell, Max Dimoff, Edwin Barker, and Don Palma. He plays on a bass made by Oregon luthier Seth Kimmel and a bow by Louis Morizot. On The Bass Shed Podcast, Russell candidly discusses his work as a freelance bassist as well his position as Principal Bassist of the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra, challenges and perspectives of the occupation and his practice routines. Support the showInstagram / Twitter / Youtube / Website / BSA / View More Episodes

I spoke with South African double bassist Zanelle Britz about her launching of the first ever double bass course in South Africa, which will take place December 9-12, 2018 in Cape Town.  Learn more about the event and donate to support it at givengain.com/cc/doublebass.   More about the South African Double Bass Course (from their website): The National Youth Orchestra is hosting our first ever course exclusively for the Double Bass! We are so excited - there are very few opportunities for bassists here and we want this to be the start of a wonderful bass community for South Africa. Wonderful teachers Roxane Steffen (principal bass at the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra), Nick Scales from the School of Music at West Texas A&M University, and Jeff Bradetich and Gudrun Raschen from the University of North Texas College of Music will be on this year's faculty. Every What It Takes course is designed specifically to cater to the needs of the participants. The course covers many aspects of professional musicianship including audition preparation, marketing of yourself as a musician, posture/injury prevention, performing with an orchestra, music history related to your instrument and individual master classes from top professionals. It gives insight into solo, chamber and orchestral playing as well as teaching and other career options. Each course also has an aspect of music education advocacy, and we will make sure to include people new to the bass in our audiences for our concerts, specially children.   Bursaries for the What It Takes: Double Bass Course We have young double bass players from across South Africa that would love to attend - but more than half are not able to do so without financial assistance. With your help we can provide transport, accommodation and catering for their time in Cape Town for the duration of the course 9-12 December 2018. It costs roughly ZAR2000 for transport and ZAR2000 for the course - so each bursary candidate would need USD265 to be able to attend. All of our financial assistance applications are means tested and we make sure they go to the young musicians that really deserve the opportunity.   Listen to Contrabass Conversations with our free app for iOS, Android, and Kindle! Kristin Zoernig is one of the country’s most in-demand early music double bassists.  In addition to being the bassist for the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, Kristin performs with the American Bach Soloists, Oregon Bach Festival, Cantata Collective, and a wide range of other ensembles. Kristin and I got together in person in Oakland, California to talk about her path through the music world and what it’s like being so heavily involved in the early music world.  We dig into the endlessly fascinating role of the continuo, the sonic complexities of gut strings, how Kristin first became enthralled with early music, and much more! We also talked a lot about influences and a bit about gear.  Here’s Kristin in her own words on those two topics: Lou Israel got me started, then I worked w John Grossman for a number of years. At Interlochen, I studied w Jack Budrow, Chris Brown, and Jeff Bradetich. Then stayed w Jeff at Northwestern. In Norway, I not only studied w Knut Guettler, but also Dan Styffe. After coming back to the U. S., I studied with Gary Karr. My strings are hand made by Damian Dlugolecki, and Pirastro (Olives). I’m gonna try some Nikolas Baldock strings next, though I’m not displeased with my current setup. My Baroque and Classical/ Transitional bows are made by Ralph Ashmead.  I do have some additional bows, but the ones I use the most, are from Ralph. Links to Check Out: Kate's website Jason attempting to play a 1/32 size bass More About Kate: Double bassist Kate Jones studied with Jeff Bradetich at the University of North Texas, where she completed her Doctorate of Musical Arts in the summer of 2014. Before moving to Texas, Kate received her Master of Music degree at Cleveland Institute of Music under the direction of Max Dimoff and Jeff Bradetich. In Cleveland she was actively involved in several area orchestras, including the CIM Orchestra, Cleveland Opera Circle, Firelands Symphony and the Cleveland Womens' Orchestra. Kate received her Bachelor of Music at Illinois Wesleyan University in 2008. Here she was active in the IWU Civic Orchestra as well as Wind Ensemble, in addition to local orchestras such as the Muscatine Symphony and the Champaign-Urbana Symphony. Kate currently holds regular positions in Texas and has subbed for such orchestras as Fort Worth Symphony. In the fall of 2014 she joined the faculty of Hurst-Euless-Bedford ISD as their bass specialist. Kate began playing chamber music at an early age with her family--first reading the Trout Quintet in High School. Her fascination with this genre continued to grow and blossomed during a summer abroad in 2007. It was then that she first played the Dvořák string Quintet as well as the Prokofiev Op. 39 Quintet. These performances prepared her for work in contemporary chamber ensembles such as the CIM Bass Quartet and the Cleveland contemporary ensemble Secundum Silentium. Kate has had the pleasure of participating in workshops and masterclasses with such artists as Edgar Meyer, Jeff Turner, and Michael Tilson Thomas. She attended Chautauqua Music Festival during the summers of 2011 and 2012. This episode is organized into three parts: Part 1 - the difference one teacher can make Part 2 - auditioning Part 3 - staying motivated More About Brian: Brian Perry is the newest member of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra double bass section. Prior to his appointment in 2013, he was a member of the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra for nine seasons. He has appeared with the Minnesota Orchestra, National Symphony and Cleveland Orchestra, and often performs with the Boston Symphony Orchestra at Tanglewood. An active collaborator, Perry is a frequent guest artist with pianist Buddy Bray for the Cliburn Foundation’s Musical Awakenings educational concert series and has performed locally on the Spectrum Chamber Music, Fine Arts Chamber Players and Cliburn at the Modern series. Additionally, he has appeared as guest artist with the Vermeer String Quartet and pianist Natalie Zhu on the Bay Chamber Concerts series in Rockport, Maine. In recent seasons, he has served as the bassist in Miguel Harth-Bedoya’s Caminos del Inka ensemble and as a member of the Funkytown All-Stars, an all double-bass quartet based in Fort Worth. Always keeping his eyes open for new repertoire for the double bass, Perry performed his transcription of William Bolcom’s Graceful Ghost Rag for the composer himself in an all-Bolcom program at the Modern Art Museum in Fort Worth in 2010. Perry earned his music degrees from Boston University and the University of North Texas. His principal teachers include Larry Moore, Jeff Bradetich and Edwin Barker. Perry is currently adjunct lecturer of double bass at the Meadows School of the Arts at Southern Methodist University in Dallas. He also serves as a board member for the International Society of Bassists (I.S.B.) and the Bradetich Foundation, an organization dedicated to promoting the double bass as a solo instrument. Committed to educating and mentoring young bassists, he has adjudicated and presented master classes for both the 2015 I.S.B. convention and the TCU Bass Fest and, since 2010, has been the double bass instructor at the highly acclaimed Boston University Tanglewood Institute in Lenox, Mass., one of the nation’s premier summer orchestral training programs for high school students. It is a modern instrument with roots in the 16th century inspired by our favorite historic double basses. While Upton Bass has referenced these classic instruments before, the Brescian directly mirrors those archetypal double basses in its design — large shoulders, violin corners, deep ribs, dramatic top arching and pronounced canted backs. These qualities combine to create a larger air mass with great resonance and rich harmonics, packaged with the the ergonomics, geometry and accessibility that modern players expect from Upton Bass. Craig Butterfield loved Edgar Meyer's bass playing ever since discovering it. Lately, he has been following in Edger's footsteps. Performing American roots music with mandolinist Jesse Jones is now a key creative outlet. Craig also teaches at the University of South Carolina. He shows young bassists how to hone their technique to explore creative new paths. But that’s not it. Craig also loves recording. He mixes and masters his own recordings in ProTools. His popular YouTube overdub videos have gotten tens of thousands of views. We talk about: his time studying with Jeff Bradetich at the University of North Texas touring with Maynard Ferguson career opportunities for musicians ...and much more! Hans Sturm isn’t afraid to reinvent himself. Everything changed for Hans when he first met François Rabbath. Before he knew it, he was in Paris soaking up these new concepts. Fast forward many years, and we find Hans playing the second Rabbath Concerto with Sylvan Rabbath on piano. If you look at the music for this concerto, you’ll see that François dedicated this piece to Hans. But that’s not it. Hans also realized that not everybody could hop on a flight to Paris to study with François. So he began to think... How could he get these teachings to a wider audience? What could he to do take these concepts beyond the printed page? Here’s the answer: Art of the Bow Art of the Left Hand Hans has reinvented himself in many ways throughout his career. He shaped the digital plan for the International Society of Bassists during his time as president. He explored creative uses of DVD technology in the Art of the Bow and Art of the Left Hand. He even left the stability of a tenured position for new adventures in a different part of the country. Through these journeys, he has brought tremendous value to the bass community. His commitment to education and to furthering his own education throughout these chapters of his life. We are diving into a really interesting project today called Anna’s Promise. Anna’s Promise is the third in a series of multimedia works developed by Barry Green (author of The Inner Game of Music and several other works, and also a former Contrabass Conversations guest). Barry is joined by Jeff Bradetich (double bass professor at the University of North Texas and also a former Contrabass Conversations guest) to speak with me about this work. The first piece, Anna's Way, From Inspiration to Artistry, is a 45-minute musical and visual journey of a young bass prodigy and her rediscovery the joy of music after lessons with a Tai Chi master. Written by Alan Scofield, this story is set to music from China, India, Africa, Brazil, Israel, and America by Tony Osborne, Francois Rabbath, Arvo Pärt, Astor Piazzolla, Emily Brown, Mary Knysh, Larry Dunlap, Johann Birkenstock, Frank Proto, and Andrés Martín (who we recently interviewed for the podcast—stay tuned for this!). The second piece, Anna's Gift, is a fifty-five minute story about a musician named Anna was written for solo bass, concert band, and narrator, and includes background visuals. The story takes place ten years after Anna was inspired to become an artist from her studies with retired Tai Chi Master Chen. The piece recounts the emotional journey of a gifted concert bassist who is longing for love and fire in her music and her life. Andrés Martín composed the music for this piece. We delve into Anna's Promise, the third part of this series, today in our conversation with Barry Green and Jeff Bradetich about this project, which is being performed by 34 different soloists all across the world. Andrés Martín is also the composer for this third installment. Anna's Promise is a worldwide effort to spread this inspirational story. The commissioning fee for Andrés Martín and story writer Alan Scofield, is being raised through industry solicitation directed by Toni Buffa of Lemur Music Inc. Toni@lemurmusic.com. When requested, USA non-profit status for charitable deductible contributions to this project will be possible through the Bradetich Foundation. www.bradetichfoundation.org. Further information from Barry Green barry@innergameofmusic.com. There is also a gofundme set up for this project, and Kolstein’s has contributed a bass and bow for auction to support Anna’s Promise.
